"You know, if I wasn't a devout atheist..."
Scott gripped Alura’s hand tightly, the cocktail of smells so intoxicating he could barely contain himself. He didn’t even notice what Alura was saying, his entire being just forcing itself to stay put and to not lash out at the woman across the counter, drinking down her sweet, juicy blood. He could just picture it flowing down his chin, onto the floor, pooling into the cracks the wooden planks formed... No! Control yourself! He snapped back to reality as Alura left. He flashed a forced smile at her, turning on his heel to march out the door. I need to leave, oh Gods, I need to leave... “Sir?” A voice called out after him, and he stopped, clenching his fists. Oh Gods, what is it now? He turned slowly, not all the way around, so he could make a break for the door if they got too close. The woman behind the counter smiled awkwardly, saying, “I’m afraid the only other place open at this hour is the tavern, and you won’t get much shopping done there.” Scott smiled, the sick humor of the situation going unnoticed by only him. ”I assure you, I’ll get what I need done. Thank you for your concern.” Trudging out the door, Scott gulped down a lungful of fresh air, untainted by the smells of dozens of people. I thought I was never gonna make it... he thought, his mind cloudy and weak. How am I going to hunt like this? I could barely catch a rabbit... Moving away from the light of the Inn, his eyes adjusted to the darkness, and he picked out two white forms near the Inn, off to the side.
As he approached, he picked up a familiar scent. He stalked closer, realizing the two white masses were horses. Sniffing the air, he grimaced, realizing who it belonged too. Tristan... I can’t believe he left us here. I should kill one of these horses just to spite him. Shaking his head, he walked by the stable, trudging into the thick woods and letting his hunting senses take over. He crouched down, sniffing the air for any prey that would feed him at this point. He continued to stalk along like this for a bit, surprised and worried at the lack of wildlife in this area. Surely the village has driven some of the natural habitants away... but this is ridiculous. There must be something scaring them away. He continued to walk through the forest, unsure of how far from the village he was, until he heard voices and a crackling fire. Curiosity got the best of him, and he slowly made his way toward the noises, stopping ten feet short of a clearing. In it, four men sat on the ground, grouped around a fire, their clothes and skin dirty from travelling. They were all heavy set from what looked like mostly muscle mass. Scott’s mouth drooled as his imagined how delicious their blood would be. And they look like humans too... delicious... Shaking his head, he strained his ears to hear what they were saying.
“...all I’m sayin’ is that if we attack at night, we get the element o’ surprise.” The one speaking held a crude mace, waving it around as he spoke. “They’ll neva’ see it comin’, I tell you.” Scott grimaced at their accents, making it nearly impossible for him to tell what they were saying. Another one piped up, this one with a flail strapped to his side. “If we attack at night, the men’ll all be there, and they’ll fight back. We attack durin’ the day, they’s all out workin’, and it’s just the women and chillun’.” The man with the mace began to speak again, but was interrupted by a third. The one carried an air of importance and, judging from the size of his sword and the amount of jewelry he wore around his neck, was most likely their leader. “We attack now,” he said, his voice low and gravely. “If we set fire to the houses, it doesn’t matter how many men are there. They’ll all be burned to a crisp.” The bandits all smiled, standing up as they got their weapons ready. I have to stop them, Scott thought, panic ripping through his heart as he thought of the Inn going up in flames. Slowly unsheathing the stiletto blade from his ankle and the sword from his waist, he stepped forward noiselessly as the men were getting riled up and ready to invade. Scott blinked a few times, trying to concentrate, and flung the dagger out into the opening at the man carrying the sword. It missed, grazing his shoulder and sticking into a tree behind him. The man barely had a chance to cry out before Scott leapt into the clearing, closing the space between them in a matter of seconds. Before any of them could draw their weapons, Scott plunged his sword into the heart of their apparent leader, ending his life instantly. He pulled on the sword, but it was stuck, causing it to fall to the ground with the corpse. Dammit! Quickly pulling the dagger from his wrist, he barely had time to deflect a blow coming from the bandit who had remained silent, who swung at him with a club. The blow left him dazed, and he caught an attack in the side from the man with the mace, sending him sprawling many feet away.
“Well, well, well, what ‘ave we here?” said the man with the mace, smiling an evil grin. Scott struggled to his knees, but the man kicked him in the side, causing him to cry out in pain and he fell back down, dirt coating his sweaty face. “A little hero, eh? Well, you know what they say. ‘Good guys finish last, bad guys have a blast!’” The man and his cohorts laughed at Scott, as his vision began to fade. No... gotta... stay awake... he thought, grasping the dagger with his hand. The cold metal dug into his skin, and the smell of blood suddenly filled his nostrils. His head whipped around, and he saw the corpse lying on the ground, blood gushing from the wound. Blood. Blood!! He suddenly flew to his feet, stabbing the man with the mace in the gut. He repeated this twice until he was convinced he was dead, then flung himself around onto the man with the club, tackling him to the ground and tearing into his throat, blood and flesh flying across the clearing. Scott gorged on him for a while before standing up, the man with the flail standing paralyzed behind him. The fire crackled behind Scott as he laughed silently, whispering, ”Go. Go tell all of your friends what you witnessed here tonight. This village is under my protection. You will not touch it.” The man nodded frantically, turning quickly and running into the forest. Scott sighed, looking down at the three corpses. Damn... I’ve made a real mess here. They’ll know it was me, too. He looked down at the corpse he had feasted on and sighed. He kneeled down, sucking more blood from it before he felt satiated, then stood up and went to grab his sword from the corpse. Yanking with all his might, he turned on his heel and sliced off the head of the man whose blood he drained. He took the head by the hair, launching it into the forest. There. Now it just looks like a few bandits got slaughtered. Grabbing his dagger as he passed the final corpse, he flew into the forest, going much faster than he had on the way there. He emerged next to the Inn quickly, and checked himself for bloodstains. He wiped his mouth, opening the front door and smiling. ”Hello,” he said to the Innkeeper. ”Shopping’s done.” She smiled awkwardly, walking out from behind the counter and showing him to his room. “Have a good night, sir,” she said, walking away, glancing over her shoulder as she went. Scott opened the door and smiled at Alura, pretending he hadn’t just massacred three men. ”Hello. Miss me?”
