In a way, you can say "once upon a time," but that wouldn't set this story's mood right... What about "Our story starts out...?" no... I do believe we should find another way to start our fairy tale... Something simplistic, yet profound... Ah, yes... I do believe I have it now! Sit close, children, and listen to the story I have to tell you today. It's very long, so I hope you brought snacks! Are you comfy, then? Very good.
Long, long ago, years before the World Wars, the Great Depression, or any catastrophic events we now know today, dragons walked amongst men. In case you were wondering, yes; this is what we call the "Middle Ages." Knights, dragons, princesses and all that! When heroes went to slay beasts for their head to mount on the wall, and for a name they could keep for as long as they wore their armor and kept their sword sharp. Yes, this was a time where heroes took the glory, and when gold and silver had a great market value.
The dragons lived among the people for this time period, sharing their wisdom and treasures with the welcoming humans. They co-existed in a dragon-rider type civilization; symbolic, really. The farmers provided easy meals for the weary dragons, whilst the dragons gave them the riches they needed to survive. With the dragons around providing treasures and whatnot, this was a prosperous time for both the humans and the dragons!
Crops grew, cattle flourished, crime was low, and there were feasts for everyone! Even the poor! Everyone could see that the dragons were wealthy additions to the human's economy. The world was peaceful with the guidance of the dragons, and the only reason for this was the treaty the humans and dragons had signed. The dragons would stay and help the humans, just so long as their "heroes" never killed or harmed a dragon.
This treaty lasted for years... But of course as life is, someone broke it. A farmer had killed a young dragon, claiming it had stolen it's sheep without offering any type pay for it. Enraged, the dragons charged the man with unnecessary murder. The dragon was just a chick! It could hardly fly, what with those puny wings! But the farmer persisted, and even convinced most of his village that the chick's parents convinced it to steal. However, these charges did not stand. But, the parents who were still grieving their lost child, went to the king's home, and stole his single daughter to seek revenge. By natural impulse, the kingdom's knights went to get the princess back, but were only half successful.
With a chick lost and a princess gone, both the humans and the dragons were enraged at each other. Arguments ensued, which nearly lead to war! The other mythical beasts around, such as Griffins, decided to stay as far away from this war as possible. Sick of the selfish humans, the dragons departed from their village homes and took refuge in the mountains to avoid war. However, war came. So-called heroes came from other continents to slay the massive beasts. Dragons retaliated by taking cattle and burning crops... Along with other gruesome things.
The dragon population began to diminish, and the beasts knew it. Gathering up to the largest mountain peak they could find, the dragons and their fellow mythical beasts created a rift in the sky; a portal to another world. Fleeing through it, the present dragons left the human world, not caring if they left any of their kind behind--let the human lovers perish. The rift closed, never to be opened again.
As the rift sealed, two orbs were created-one in the human world, and the other in the dragon world. These two orbs, both called the Anklar, are shrouded in mystery. When the dragons found theirs, they naturally gave it to their most trusted dragon to protect it. When the humans found it years later, however, they put it into a museum for all to see. Obviously everyone can see the difference between the mythical beasts and the humans. Neither race knows it's purpose, or it's actual worth.
After the dragons left, the humans eventually forgot that they were even there, for the world had become so... Quiet. So dim without the dragon's shimmering scales around them. Even though dragons were spoken of, these true stories soon became legend... Which slowly evaporated into nothing but a simple tale. So, in a sense, it was like the dragons had never come to the human world. It was like they never existed. The only proof of these mythical beasts is the Anklar... But no one realizes it.
In truth, the Anklar are both links to the other world. Through the Anklar, a dragon could travel to the human world, or a human to the dragon world. However, this has not yet been discovered, and is probably still a secret to even the greatest of scholars. How do I know? Well, maybe you'll find it out for yourself. Why don't you go visit the New York Historical Society museum? I've heard they moved the Anklar there for a few days... You may learn something new. Or... You could make a ground-breaking discovery. Whatever you do, however, make an adventure out of it!
