Donovan made his way from the party and headed back to the inn where Anna had gone. She was obviously extremely upset about what happened and Altair seemed to be the cause of it. When he entered the inn he saw that Anna was in her room. He tried the door but found it barred, so he called out to her.
“Anna, I’m back from the ball. I’m going to be having a cup of tea before bed if you’d like to talk. I’m sorry Altair upset you.” He could read between the lines, that man was pushing her buttons and it was causing conflicts. He was going to have to deal with this himself.
He had planned on going ahead of Anna and letting Altair escort her to the Academy, not anymore. He would be going with her himself, deal with minor Academy issues, and then take Archon and Kresimir himself to Eliias…
He hummed to himself as he made the tea, and got out a second cup just in case.
She tossed and turned, and just when she thought she’d go mad, there was a knock on the door, followed by Don’s voice. Her eyes narrowed and she shrugged. She couldn’t sleep…Might as well have some tea…She shoved the blankets off her head and grabbed a robe, wrapping it around her before she stepped out into the common room.
“Not your fault he’s an a**…Unless he wasn’t one until he entered the Academy…Then I blame you and it’s all your fault and you should be sorry.” She muttered as she took a seat. Donovan poured the tea and she took a sniff of it, not because she thought Don would poison her, but just to make sure the taste wouldn’t take her by surprise and make her gag…Some teas tasted like latrines smelled and she wanted nothing to do with one of those.
She added some honey and took a sip. “What’s his problem anyways?” She thought back. She’d not done anything to him for him to be such a jerk…She just existed… “And why would he care if I was your date?!” That was what pissed her off…He’d known she was going to the ball…Or was it just because she had no idea what the Baron was up to that he decided to be a snarky dickhead? What Donovan was up to was his business…She’d simply been charged with finding an easy way in…She’d done that…She’d gotten the invites. It wasn’t as if Altair had asked her if she’d go with him. There was no reason for him to get mad at her.

“Probably because he likes you. He did something similar in the Academy.” He sipped his own tea carefully and then looked at her. “Altair has had a difficult life, he was already like he is now when he arrived. Despite my best efforts his personality has unchanged.” Another sip and then a slight sigh.
“I’m sorry about everything this trip Anna. Altair, my emotions, the ball… Seems like we started out strong but we’re ending on a weak note.” He poured himself some more tea and put another spoonful of sugar in it. “But we can leave tomorrow if you want, or tonight if it pleases you. I was going to have Altair escort you back, but with the difficulties that have arisen, best I do so personally. Don’t want him to end up poisoned and you having to kill.”
Out of his outfit he pulled out a scarf and a armlet, a rather lovely silk scarf embroidered with multiple colors that distracted the eye. The armlet was in silver and had the intricate infinity knot made with the strands of silver, “I was going to give these to you at the ball, but unfortunately you left before I could. It’s an apology for the way I acted…”
Don seemed to be getting a lot of her Are you nuts?! looks it would seem…Because his words about Altair liking her…She could understand a little kid acting like that, but a full grown man?! She didn’t think Don was lying to her, but she found it hard to swallow the truth of his words, so she took a careful drink of her tea…She was still wearing her poison lips…Until she was sure she wouldn’t have to worry about Altair sneaking up on her, it’d stay on.
“Wait! What?!” Altair was supposed to be seeing her back to the Academy… But then Donovan said he’d probably do it himself… She sat back and watched him with narrowed eyes… “I wouldn’t kill him…” That was true… Though she didn’t assure she wouldn’t poison him with something undesirable…Him having to rush from his horse every five minutes with a flux would be punishment enough…
“If you can get him to swear to behave, I’ll put up with him…” She set her cup down and dipped her finger in, running the tip around the rim… “The cart goes slower than a horse and rider, I know that, and with the plants, I don’t want the pots busting until I can get them to soil they can settle better in. I’m not going to lie, lots of trouble can sprout up at the Academy overnight, and we’ve been gone over a week. Might be best if you go on ahead.” Her eyes narrowed. “But only if you can get him to swear to behave and he’ll keep to it. I’ll poison him in a heartbeat if he annoys me too much.” He’d already made her cry…She wouldn’t put up with a whole trip of that.
Don pulled something out of his cloak and waved it about. She couldn’t not look at it, it was so pretty! And the amulet was shiny…Call her simple, but pretty and shiny could brighten any bad day. “For me?” She smiled, taking them in her hands and running her fingers over them. “Blame Altair. He’s the jerk that thought it’d be fun to make me cry.” She looked at the scarf and back at Don with a grin. “I forgive you. But Don, you’ve only known me a week and a half…If you want a friend, a real friend, it takes time…Ask the Whippoorwills next time you get a chance.”
She carefully folded the scarf and set the amulet on top of it. “I’d give you a kiss, but I have poison kisses. You’re a little too heavy to drag to your bed for when you come to in the morning.” She smiled and finished off her tea. “I’ll see you in the morning. We can decide what we’re going to do then. I’m too tired to start out tonight anyways. And you need your beauty rest.”

Astaroth was so happy to be leaving Noveria, the weather was brutal and he was frozen by the time they reached the ship on the river. As they boarded and the gold was transferred on board he grabbed Verity and whispered, “I think we both need to warm up…”
He didn’t say anything else but escorted her to their cabin as the captain began to have the ship set sail back to Hackathorn. The gold would give them time, time they desperately needed to recover. Hopefully Ellyena would tell Brookelle everything else she knew, including the rest of the gold.
As he kissed Verity and her groans became louder he nibbled her ear and said, “Verity Thornias, I love you.” He growled and pulled her onto the bed, him on the bottom… of course.
Astaroth had made sure she kept very warm in their cabin the entire trip back to Hackathorn, and when it was time to make port, she had an eternal smile lazily gracing her lips as she tried to get her curls to go into a manageable semblance of mess. “I think I forgot to pack a hairbrush.” She giggled when he playfully bit her neck and helped her mount her horse…
He climbed up next to her and laughed when she had to fix herself in the saddle. “You alright love?” She looked up at him and grinned. “Mhm…” He couldn’t help but laugh when she blushed at the men who were laughing at her obvious state. She was a newly wed, she could be mussed if she wanted. They left Seaside and started for Venereia, the companionable silence them growing and growing until Astaroth decided to fill it.
“Verity…I’m not trying to put any pressure on you about this, but…If we have children…Are you going to continue with the V tradition?” She snorted and laughed so hard she almost fell out of her seat. “Are you nuts?!” He blushed and laughed himself. “Noooooo.” She hadn’t given it much thought…She’d expected to be the crazy aunt, not a mother…If she were honest, it was a terrifying thought…
So she decided to not think about it… “Astaroth?” He looked up from the road. “Hm?” She turned her head slightly and smiled at him. “I love you.” He brought his horse up next to hers and leaned over brushing a kiss to her lips. He chuckled when she leaned into him. His hand took the reins as his arm snaked around her waist and lifted her from the saddle, bringing her over in front of him on the saddle. “I think that Noverian cold seeped right down into my bones.”

"Oh, you have a beautiful voice." And he whipped her again, some of the hooked ends of his Cat Of Nine Tails caught her flesh and helped to whip it away when he pulled. The woman screamed, and Kessler basked in the music of it. "So. Very. Beautiful." Blood dripped from the holes that had been torn in the skin just above her ribs, some of it still dangling there. He wondered what it would look like once it had healed, but he gave it little chance as he whipped her again and, once more, the hooks tore away more flesh.
"I suppose this has been a sufficient enough punishment." Kessler cut her down and let her nude frame fall to the floor below, landing in a puddle of her own blood and vomit. "Next time, you will have your taxes paid on time." Kessler then helped the woman over to a table and cleaned her wounds. There was no sense in her dying over a few coins... About a half hour later, her wounds were cleaned and bandaged, and Kessler was helping her into her clothes, taking extra care to be gentle so as not to disturb the wrappings.
Kessler offered her a smile as he escorted her to the door, and the woman seemed confused, and rightfully so. "I don't know what to make of you..."
"What ever do you mean?" Kessler cocked his head to the side.
"You tortured me... And you delighted in it, like a monster... You mocked me and my pain, and in the blink of an eye you help me clean and dress the wounds, and you simply set me free? I do not know what to say."
"Oh, heavens no. Nothing is that simple." Kessler grabbed a pair of sheers from his belt, and in the blink of an eye, he had his free hand tangled in the woman's hair, and a forceful yank brought to her to the floor. He bashed her head into the rock once, twice, and another until she became more compliant... Or more dazed. Kessler did not care which as long as his job became easier.
"If you don't know what to say..." He stuck the sheers into her mouth and found her tongue. "...Don't say anything..."

The ride back to the capitol was enjoyable, and when they finally rode through the gates of Venereia Astaroth let out a sigh of relief. “Home sweet home, and with some of our missing gold.” He was happy to finally be back to the place that was quickly becoming one of his favorite places in the world.
As they dismounted and guards began to shuttle the gold back into the Royal Vault he kissed his wife and said, “And how long are we home for now? Shouldn’t we be getting to Rochford?” He didn’t want to focus on business, but alliances and appearances had to be kept up. Suddenly, there was a joyful bark and Morgan came sprinting out of the main door to the castle.
In seconds she had leaped and collided with both of them, pinning them both onto the ground and licking their faces repeatedly. ‘Off! Off you mangy mutt!” he was laughing though and was ruffling her fur as she whimpered happily at having the two of them back. “It’s good to see you too girl, Victor alright?” Morgan barked once and her tongue rolled out slobbering Verity.
Astaroth took one look at his slime covered wife and lost all self control. He began to laugh uncontrollably.

Droston let out a laugh and had to smile, Haster certainly put things into perspective. “Well, we may just have to do that. If the King doesn’t drown you in paper work and the Castle Guard proves to be competent enough to handle things on their own.” He glanced around at the Captain’s, technically his study, and was so glad that there was organization in place. Droston had no idea how he would have managed without a filing system. There was even a letter for the replacement about how things were organized.
“Anything else I should be aware of before you go? Perhaps who I should look out for or people that require my… attention?” Haster was well aware how protective Droston was of his friends, the last time someone had to tried to truly insult Haster when he was around had ended up with two broken legs. Droston may give good natured ribbing, but he did not tolerate impoliteness and insults to his friends.
He would be more than glad to arrange an ‘accident’ for a person or two while Haster was away and the blame could not befall him.

When Sido opened the door to the wardrobe, she let out a cry of surprise when the kinkajou leaped out a her, but the cry turned into a laugh as the creature began cuddling her and petting her hair. "My, my! Who is this?" She asked as she watched the honey colored creature settle around her neck. "You're just adorable." She said, looking over the creature before turning back to the wardrobe and getting out a few things for him. A cream tunic, a dark blue vest and and a dark pair of trousers. His little pet stayed on her shoulders as Sido moved over to him with a smile and set the folded pile down on the bed, watching as Dinah played with Reid, nuzzling hands and nibbling his fingers.
Sido brought a hand up to his pet, and stroked its head. "Is it a monkey? I've never seen a creature like this," She said, looking at him as the creature cuddled into her hand, making a soft, crooning noise as she petted its head. "It looks like a raccoon, though, and-" The rest of her sentence was cut off by another laugh as the creature began to play with her hair.
Morgan jumped her before she could finish giving orders…She had guards placed on the vault that she could trust…Mainly ones whom she scared the piss out of at the mere mention of her name…She could trust them…Heavens forbid they ever screwed up.
She made a sound of discontent when she realized Morgan had drooled all over her face. “Ugh! Morgan!” She tried to wipe her face with her sleeve. “Missed you too.” She said as Astaroth started laughing. “Not funny!” She said making a face. She gave her husband a shove and laughed herself. “I’m going to go wash up then I’ll be in the office. I’m sure if Vesper was smart, he shut the door and locked it so the work wouldn’t breed beyond the room. I don’t know how long we‘ll be here. Depends on when Rochford wants to see me.”
Astaroth laughed at that, and to get even with his fits of laughter, she pinned him down and gave him a slimy kiss as he tried to shake his head yelling “No no no!” But she still got her way. Maybe he wouldn’t laugh so hard. “Give me twenty minutes and then I’ll see anyone who wishes to speak with me.” The servants nodded and she went and washed up as quick as she could and paid a visit to Victor before she shut herself in the office that had not been locked…Someone had straightened up…She didn’t like it…She made a face and started going through her letters.
Oak had written her, saying simply that Rock was very interested and would pay her a visit when he was done in Montarra and Elysia…It seemed the couple was making their rounds…She wondered if they’d brave Noveria or claim the coming winter would be too much…She was sure she’d hear about it sooner or later. She set the letter aside and started going through the rest, finally glad that she didn’t feel as if she were trying to build a house from tinder sticks…At least now she could set a foundation…Small as it may be.
"I haven't been here long enough to make enemies just yet, Master Coradon. Maybe when I get back we can find a few." Now that Droston was around, the two of them were likely to find some kind of trouble together, and someone eventually was bound to find the both of them detestable. The thought brought a smile to Haster's lips, and he would have loved to discuss exactly why he carried such a mischievous grin...
... But he had places to be. "I must be going. Try not to go whoring without me." Haster spun round and left the room, giving a little more thought to whether or not there was anyone in Rochford that needed to have their noses broken. Nobody came to mind no matter how much he thought of it... And it wasn't until he was standing before the assembling convoy that Haster stopped.
There were supply carts, a handful of soldiers, and several horses that were being prepared... "Wrong!" Haster yelled out at the man trying to hitch the horses to the carts. "You've packed the carts before hitching the horses. If you do manage to lift the carts high enough to hook them to the harnesses, the immediate change in weight will startle the horses... Fool. Unpack the cart and start over."
A few guards laughed at the little man taking charge of the preparations. He was merely a secretary, and had little authority given his position, but his other position was "King's Cousin" and that carried some impact. "You think this is funny? This is a waste of time. I see nothing funny about that.
"What is funny, though, is the horses... They're shitting all over the place, and it would be a poor sight for our King and Queen to see. Shovel it up before they arrive." Haster smiled and climbed into one of the carriages. "Wrong!" Haster poked his head back out.
"Yeeees?" Haster eyed the man wearing the pin of a steward.
"This isn't the King and Queen's traveling convoy."
"..." Haster puckered his lips and moved them around, fighting the urge to both smile and frown. "... Oh. My mistake... Can you point me in the King's direction then?"
"... That way." The man pointed, and Haster left in the direction of his pointing finger.

Robyn had postponed for as long as he thought was appropriate. He had been hoping to see Sarah Howe before he said the rest of his goodbyes, but she had not arrived, and it was now at the point where those on the council had heard of his resignation and were annoyed with his presence in the castle... They called him a freeloader, leeching on a kingdom that was already poor. Robyn shrugged it off as best he could. He would not overstay his welcome...
... Robyn heard of Verity's return, and he went to meet her. She was the Queen Regent, and even if she was insane, that earned her some respect, and Robyn was not the type to abandon niceties. He walked up to the door of Verity's office and found it half open, so he pushed it and announced himself. "Your Grace..." Robyn bowed his head. "I've come to say goodbye. I'll be leaving within the next couple of hours." He could have left now, but he was still holding off as much as he could for Sarah.
Verity looked up and was not overly fond of the sight that was there… “Creedy…” She sat back in her chair and gave him a long look. She’d had a few notices in her stack that referred to his…Leeching and freeloading as the other men had so eloquently put it…She found it odd he had stuck around long enough to risk her wrath, but she was in a slightly better mood.
“I imagine it must be hard being you, Master Creedy. I don’t envy you.” She stacked her read notices and set them aside…She’d burn them later…Wasted paper, ink, and space…She supposed she could turn them into a book and someone would worship it eventually, but she highly doubted it.
“I mean, the Noverian Court, and Hackathornian Court in so short a time…No roots…Do you even have friends, Master Creedy?” She rested her elbows on her desk and watched him. “Not even the intestinal fortitude to stay and help clean up the mess you helped make by leaving the vault key in a desk drawer.” She waved her hand before he could defend that. “I’m sure you had your very good reasons. Which is the only thing that is keeping you from seeing the inside of a dungeon. You were going to the quarantine and might not return, but you could have given it to Victor or me or Vesper, done any number of things. You didn’t. Your resignation shall suffice for that, I suppose.
“But you’ll forgive me for not giving you a sterling recommendation for wherever you try to set roots again…A word of friendly advice…Show people you aren’t a selfish leech who jumps ship at the first sign of trouble or you’ll find yourself with no place to go. You think me mad, insane, chaotic…It’s not my job to change your mind when all you have to do is open your eyes and look around to see the truth. I may not have allies as you would see them, but I know the true value of the allies I have. Do you? That's part of my job. It’s also my job to do what I can to take care of the people of Hackathorn in my brother’s absence, a duty you sorely failed in by resigning. Call me what you will, but at least I know my place. I’m cleaning up a mess you made, Master Creedy, and you’re running. The fact I’m trying to salvage your mess even using my own funds and ever bit of crazy I have learned over the years to keep this country afloat says I know my duty to the people…I am holding up a Duty you took up and discarded. Maybe that makes me as crazy as everyone claims. I know what I have to do…And it seems so do you… I hope someone sees something other than a coward when you decide to stop running.”

Rock mounted his horse and waved goodbye to the Lord Protector. He rode with his wife beside him, and their guardsmen in front and behind, right on by Haster Crane.
He had left Tyrley in the capable hands of Droston Coradon and those of his trusted cousin, Oak, so he could show his wife the Septenary. As well as remind Montarra of them, and it was Brissol that was their first stop, then onto Elysia where Crane was being sent with the letter Rock had asked him to write when they were headed into the vaults for the crown. Haster was to deliver the note to the Queen Soraya and to inform her that his king and queen would be along shortly and remain the polite and upright representative of Rochford in his stay.
"Morri, do you want to go to Roth on the way?" he asked with a grin.
