Cricket was calming down, but the contact and the feeling of being treated like a lady made her blush. She sat down and started eating, wondering exactly how much she knew about Alec.

First, Alec was a vampire...

She knew he didn't mind human food, and that he could read minds. She knew that he had a "twin brother", who Nami had freed him from. But really, what else did he know? When was he born? Who were Alladon's parents? How did he get to be inside Alladon in the first place?

Of course, more important might be, where were they right now? Would Maeve or Nami come back? Were they safe? She sighed, not wanting to worry herself by dwelling on it. Today, she decided, was a good day.

Alec smiled a little less. "I was thinking about that...I know a potion...That can help us lose our scent for a little while." He noticed the look on her face and added, "Just until we find someplace to stay..." Alec looked at Cricket now, a smile pulling at his lips, revealing his bright white teeth.

He then looked away and took a bite of his pizza, wasn't the best, but all human food tasted the same; bland. He managed to swallow, even though he'd have to throw it back up again. "Alladon thought himself to be an only child, but when he claimed to hear voices that weren't his own, our mother and father told him he had a twin brother; me. The egg didn't split as it should have in the womb, and so I was me, and my brother was himself; two beings, forever concealed in the same form." Alec stopped and checked her thoughts; nothing so far.

He went on, "Alladon was bitten when he was 28. The vampire was a newly found creature, he's the reason they began closing up cities, secluding us. Making us feel like we truly were monsters.." He paused then looked up at her. "It was 3105. Alladon was walking alone, in the woods; he was a hunter when he was bitten. I remember, he was ambushed. First by a child, who looked human enough and seemed lost, then we were surrounded. He tried to fight them off...But he couldn't.." Alec stopped again, wiping a tear from his eye.

"The vampire venom that ran through his veins, automatically ran through mine...Because we were one. The reason both of us can read minds, is because when human, both of us were schizophrenic. We could hear thoughts that weren't our own; before Nami split us apart..." Alec didn't know if he should say it, but he took the chance. "We could change forms. I could take over and he would be the voice in my head. My appearance would over power Alladon's..."

When he was finally done speaking, Alec felt as though he had been talking for hours. He had never opened up like this to anyone, Nami only knew because she gave herself the power to read minds..

Cricket nodded. "Wow... I'd hate to be stuck inside someone else. Overpowering them would make me feel awful... neither of us could live our own lives." She bit her lip and looked straight into Alec's eyes sadly. "I can't even imagine how horrid that must have been for you... and then with dating and... wow, that must have been terrible." Then she smiled and added, "but at least you won't take freedom for granted. Humans seem to do that so often. And creatures, too. They focus so much on choosing sides and fighting wars that they can't even see that at least they aren't caged up..there are so many things. Sickness, or being paralyzed, or blind or deaf... the list goes on and on. Sometimes we tend to focus on the one thing that's wrong and never notice: hey, I'm not blind today!" She grinned and took another bite. "So.. what changed? With Nami and all of that.. what was there before that isn't there now? Or.. the other way around?" She knew it would be painful, but she saw how he seemed to feel more open now, and she wanted to know.

Alec thought for a moment then looked down, ashamed. "Alladon gave me his anger. I mean, he still has minimal anger but most of it's mine now..." He sighed. "I can't change forms now....we only could because there were two of us. It's different....because I used to be able to hide from Nami, and, well, I can't now...Nothing much other than that has changed..." Alec stared blankly at the pizza. Would she be scared now? Scared of his anger? What he could be capable of when his anger got in the way?

He sighed internally.

Cricket smiled softly at him and filled her mind with even more calm than usual. "Did you ever think that it wasn't you, it was her?" She asked softly. "Pardon me for not having known much about her, but from what I saw she seemed angry and controlling herself. You haven't gotten angry around me, unless she was there too. I don't think you are the common denominator for these anger issues." She shrugged. "Maybe I'm wrong, but that's from personal observation. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. Anger is a natural emotion, and just because you feel it strongly doesn't mean you're different. Well, I guess it does. But everyone's different, so that doesn't mean much. Even if you are right, though.." she reached over to lay her hand over his. "..I love you just the way you are. And that won't change. Ever.

I promise."

Alec paused and then shook his head. "No...I received my anger from Alladon, not Nami. She's cruel but she wouldn't do something like that.."

'Or would she?' Alec had never thought of the connection before. He did always seem more frustrated and angry when he was around Nami; not so much when he was around others. He shrugged it off then turned to look at Cricket.

"So, tell me about yourself. Family? Friends? Where did you live..?"

Cricket's smile faded slowly and she looked down, blushing a little. "I didn't have any friends.. they all thought I was weird for wanting to leave the cloud... er.. that's where we live. Like, packs, or flocks, ours is called a cloud. Well anyway, they thought I was nuts because life there was supposed to be so wonderful. I felt imprisoned because they expected me to stay, so I left.

My parents got mad and stopped visiting me, and I lived in the ground, where there was a small hole leading to a tunnel and finally an open area under a tree. It was good enough. Then, of course, as the weather changed and it started to rain, I knew I couldn't stay. I got out fast and started living anywhere I could - holes in trees, stuff like that. Then I found that house and stayed in there for a while. It was nice and stable, so I decided to make it my home. It wasn't way too long after that, when you found me." She shrugged and looked up at him, plastering on a false smile that didn't reach her eyes; which showed sadness at being rejected and abandoned.

Alec 's smile faded and he looked down. "Oh...I'm sorry..." He didn't want to admit it, but he knew how she felt. Alladon was the only one who knew about him. He was an outsider, to his own family.

Alec stared at the unfinished piece of pizza, his hands were on the table; his fingers lightly drummed against it. "So..." He didn't know what to say, so instead of finishing his sentence he just stayed quiet.

As the silence droned on, Alec's thoughts wondered to the past. He could almost remember his mothers voice, and the way his fathers' cologne smelled. He didn't look up from his hands, and he didn't speak.

He wasn't even breathing.

Cricket chewed her lip and picked up her slice of pizza as an alternative. "So how about favorites, huh? What's your favorite food?" Awkward moments weren't her thing. She hated them more than anything else. Especially when she cared a lot about the person she had been talking to, and then it turned awkward.

Besides, this would be good to know. Any time a special occasion arose, she would want to know what to make. And she'd want to learn how to perfect it.

At the thought of special occasion, her mind returned to her dream.

She was standing in a brilliant wedding dress, her mind focused on staying human-sized. Her heart was beating so fast that she thought it might pump too much blood. She was holding a brilliant bouquet, a rainbow of beautifully scented flowers. Then, there he was. In a tuxedo, he walked up the aisle, tall and proud, with the love in his eyes that mirrored hers. It was all a blur as they said their vows, but she clearly heard the words in a soft, tearful, masculine voice. "I do..."

Cricket snapped back to the present and her face went bright red. She bit her lip, hard, and stared at the table, so embarrassed that she thought she might cry. "U-um.." she managed, "favorite food?"

Alec would've been bright crimson, had he been human. He was so focused on her thoughts that he had imagined it too. Only, it was very different.

Cricket's beauty was even more magnificent as she twirled down the isle. Alec looked her up and down, smiling. When the piano finally stopped and the echo was gone, Alec realized she was in front of him. He reached forward and lifted the veil from her face and he smiled more. Alec recited his vows, and she, hers. The priest then asked, "Do you Cricket, take Alec as your lawfully wedded husband?" Alec looked at her, smiling, but there was nothing to smile about.

She was gone.

Alec shook his head and realized she was waiting for a response. "I'll eat anything. Doesn't really matter.."

Cricket nodded, not hungry anymore. Then, she shyly looked up at him and asked, "what's the most beautiful thing you've ever seen? A sunrise over a lake... or the wind blowing through golden leaves in the fall...?" It was obvious to her that Alec had a sensitive side, and she was always curious to see it. Of course, all emotions struck her curiosity. She liked seeing him happy, and she wanted to see him control his anger, if he could learn to. It was a difficult process for anyone, and maybe one that he hadn't learned, as a vampire. Most creatures had no sense of compassion, and she was lucky to have found one that did.
