We loved the sea, and it branded us with pain…
Xander felt the wind sweep past her slowly, her eyes distant as she made a short motion, the boat groaning only a little as it broke from its earlier path, and onto another trail that remained a mystery to all but she at the wheel herself. A course that had worked its way into her mind and drove her forward in the way it always had. That was how she seemed to run… wordless and without needing to inform those around her. They trusted her well enough and, what with years of success, who wouldn’t? There was no need to doubt in the close knit company that had grown between them over the years. However, as she felt the ship sway slight against the shift, she blinked, the light, falling directly about her form now almost blinding her momentarily, forcing her to turn her eyes upon the water, the soft turquoise waves glinting brightly, shadowed only a little by the sunlight that pooled about them. A soft sigh, short and still pained touched upon her lips and, as she felt herself slipping into a further state of thought, she shuddered, a voice from above making her body jerk with the gentle surprise, a groan escaping her chest as her body screamed in protest, the pain flaring in her side again. Nevertheless, no anger entered her eyes as she let her gaze roll up towards the form of a young man whom clambered upon a web of ropes near the crows nest, shadows a distant side of the ship. She blinked, narrowing her eyes against his figure almost silhouetted against the sunlight and, as he slipped, loosing his grip, she gasped, coughing and sputtering as he flew downwards, landing messily into a barrel of apples. About him, some of the crew gathered, laughter bursting from the pits of their bellies as they watched the boy flail about from where he sat, trapped within the hold of the barrel, swallowed in a great sea of reddish fruit. But the captain, having let her mouth fall open, was not laughing at all, her eyes only growing wide, her breath stuck hard in her chest, her body numb as her eyes began to blur. Swirling thoughts swept through her, making her sway uneasily, a nausea beginning to churn in her stomach as she swallowed down rising bile.
Apples… Annie Apple… Annie.. “Your name is Annie isn’t it?” Laughter…. “No! Not even close!!” Annie…
“Captain!” The voice of a large, full muscles man, bellowing and monstrous tore through her thoughts and, steadying herself as she began to rock, she let a stoic mask brush plaster itself upon her face, motioning the brute of a man up to her and making soundless order to him, with a simple sweep of her hands to take the wheel. He hesitated little, somewhat disappointed that he had to leave the crowd of chuckle pirate below him, however, as Xander approached him, the look on her face straying from stoic to angered, he smiled in delight, content with where he stood.
“Look at ye bastards!” She hissed, the laughing halting immediately as she drew up beside the barrel, hands folded behind her back, a small but visible lameness in her step, giving away her hidden pain. “Can you not see that one of our crew is in need of your help! And yet y’all stand there gawking, making fools of yourselves! Useless! That what I brand the lot a’ya! Useless Scallywags… if you aren’t going to do your job I suggest you make mine a lot easier and throw yourselves overboard?! Do you hear me?!!” Her harsh words echoed bitterly across the deck, the eyes of each of those before her wide and somewhat shocked at the outrage they should have grown accustom to by now… that very strength that gained HER, a woman of the sea, the respect she had once been denied. She growled, watching as they lowered their heads soundlessly and, giving a brisk wave of her hand she spoke again. “Good…” She spat. “Now.. Why don’t you all get back to what you were doing! And if I’m not content with what I’m seeing… then Poseidon will be thrilled tonight!” She lifted a hand into the air and, from the hall she had exited only minutes before came a sleek black panther, it obsidian pelt glinting as its pale green eyes fell upon its master.
There was a flurry of movement and Xander let herself chuckle, turning back to the barrel and lifting a foot, delivering a brisk kick to the side, smiling softly as it toppled over, its contents rattling from the bucket, spilling over the floorboards swiftly, a few crewmates further away shouting as they stumbled upon the fruit. And, hands folded at her back again, she narrowed her eyes, clearing her throat as she looked down upon the young man who’s feet were still visible from the barrel at her own feet.
“Well then Lake…” she mused. “I think you’ve caused your share of terror today hmm?” And she smiled a warm, friendly smile… one that she saved for her younger first mate.

Yet now I find myself trapped within its beauty… like a million times before…
