o2. General stuff here. This is a PG-17 thread, meaning no cybering or content over that rating. If things get steamy, take it to PMs or do a time skip. As for gore and fighting, considering the type of thread this is, there will be fights and even death. All I ask is that you don't kill another person's character without their permission first. Other than that, as you should know, OOC should be distinguished from the post using brackets - (( )), [[ ]], or {{ }} for example. However, there is an OOC thread, so this should not be a problem. Oh, and before I forget, this thread is open to all genders, all sexualities, etc, so I better not see any discrimination of any kind or else you're banned without a warning.

o3. Let's focus on literacy and posting now. Since I wish for this thread to thrive for as long as possible, I won't go and say you have to type a novel worthy post. All I ask is that you know the rules of grammar and keep an eye on spelling. I'm not a spelling-Nazi, but one too many mistakes is noticeable so make sure you read over your post or use spell check. Getting back to post size, I only ask for a minimum of 1-2 paragraphs - one liners are prohibited. If you have a writer's block, don't worry, be descriptive as much as possible, that usually helps for me. Also, type in third person point of view, using 9-11 size font, and please, pretty posts people. It doesn't have to be a lot, but the character's name, picture, and maybe a quote is more than enough. Finally, spoken words should be colored, in bold, or both, and thoughts should be in italics. As for text, underline it in color please.

Here lies the rules for students:

To my fellow haemavores, homosapiens, and lycanthropes - the time has come for my journey to come to an end. I have seen 2,000 years of many events, good and bad, but I have grown weary of this seemingly immortal life. Before any assumptions are made, I was not forced to make this decision nor did anyone influence this thought but myself. Naturally, I have much to leave behind, but none are more important than what I wish to leave in this letter.

With these past two years in mind, I am not ashamed to admit how proud I am of the "mythical races" revealing themselves to the world. Furthermore, I am truly grateful to those who fought for our rights - humans, vampires, and lycanthropes a like. In addition to this, I wish to personally give gratitude to the Chinese scientists who created synthetic blood. Even though the initial project was not meant for my kind, it was still a great factor in our rise to society. Despite our more avid and allowed participation in the human world, some have refused to accept the current times. It is understandable that some aren't ready for such a drastic change. I myself was against the suggestion at first, but in the end, I was convinced that this is for the best. However, with recent violent acts from all sides towards each other, I can only hope that someday it really will have been for the best. Until that day comes, I have devised a plan to help the progress move along. With my money, I funded the construction of a school up in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. There, all races will attend to receive basic and supernatural education in a safe and friendly environment that will surely give way to unity. I know what some if not most of you are thinking, and trust me when I say I know and understand the dangers of such an idea. On the other hand, that's why I trust you, my friends and family, to ensure their safety and the success of this experiment.

Enclosed below are the names and locations of the twenty-four individuals who are to be participating in this invigorating experience. Letters have all ready been sent to their addresses, and their transportation fees have been paid in advance. For those who have accepted, they should be arriving tomorrow.

You wake up one morning thinking it's just another day when you noticed there's a rather formal-looking letter directed to you. Though the sender name doesn't sound familiar to some of you, you open it anyway and are shocked to know that you have been invited to participate in a new and invigorating educational experience in a city you've probably never heard of before. What appears to be a single letter actually turns out to be two. Apparently the first letter is a cover up meant to give you the proper excuse to participate while the second letter details the official document.

For students, your parents are lead to believe that you are going away for a conference for the year that will increase your chances of getting into college. Some may be reluctant to send their child to "no-mans land," others may be eager, and others may have mixed feelings. Whatever their insecurities are, they allow you to go anyway, especially since it's guaranteed that you will make up the courses you miss this year next summer. Little do they know that you are actually going into something rather dangerous, if anything actually happens, and that you'll be with other races you may or may not approve of.

For teachers, whatever your profession is out in the world or whatever it is you're doing with your life, you have now been given the gateway to put it all on hold for something much greater. There's not much that can be said to you considering the fact that you all are adults, however, it can't be stated enough that your role in this whole ordeal is vital and to expect the unexpected at all times. You are also let known that you will be dealing with others outside of your race as well as students around the ages 15-18.

Whether you agree to go or not is up to you, but it is stated at the bottom of the letter that you are to swear to secrecy about this event until the moment you step foot in the school.

You are the chosen twenty-four, and despite how cheesy and cliche that sounds, it's a fact. In a hidden location, eighteen students and six teachers will attempt to bring Godric's dream to a reality. It may sound easy, but who knows what might try to disturb the peace. Therefore, you as students will be learning how to protect yourselves in addition to learning to get along with one another, and you as teachers will learn from each other as well as your students.

Haemavore (hee-MA-vor) -
One who subsists on a diet of only or mainly blood. The most common type of Vampire and mostly consist of altered humans. Occurrences are spread throughout the world with concentrations in North America, Britain, and Western Europe.

Moroi (mo-ro-EE) -
Moroi are vampires born from vampire parents. They live off of blood, preferably a humans. They have fangs, but when not in use, they shrink back into the mouth, making the Moroi look human. They can hypnotize humans and/or other vampires with a stare known as glamor. In addition to this, they have a natural ability to control certain elements. Through a process called specializing (usually taken place in a vampire academy,) a Moroi can control earth, wind, fire, or water. As a side note, they are usually tall, slender, and attractive, and their eyes are usually brown though some have blue.

Strigoi (strEE-goy) -
As the opposite of Moroi or any vampire for that matter, they are immortal. To become one, one must drink all the blood of a Moroi. They can only be killed by decapitation or piercing of the heart. They constantly crave blood, and are often psychotic in nature because of such. They have no special powers nor can they glamorize, but their strength and speed is double that of a normal vampire and triple that of a Dhampir, and thus it makes them lethal enemies to other vampires, lycanthropes, and humans. However, they often use humans to do their work during the day because their exposure to sunlight is less tolerable than other vampires. They can be distinguished by their blood red eyes, extremely pale skin, and their fangs are always out.

Dhampir (DAM-pire) -
A Dhampir is the offspring of a vampire and a human or a vampire and a dhampir. Dhampirs often have a vampire's super strength and speed, but they don't have a vampire's weaknesses. They are basically "half-vampire." A Dhampir is usually adept at killing and detecting other vampires. Because of such a feat, they often go to an academy for vampires to become guardians of Moroi or note-worthy vampires. Dhampirs can often be noticed by their dark or black hair, have a more curvaceous or muscular build compared to Moroi, and generally are more human-looking. On a side note, because most Dhampirs are the result of a male Moroi vampire having a sexual encounter with a female Dhampir, both the mother and child usually don't go far in life. In this case, compounds can be found just for male Moroi pleasure in which many Dhampirs live. From this, what is known as a blood whore was stemmed from such a lifestyle, and namely it was made so because some Dhampirs like to be bitten during sex. On the other hand, a blood whore is any vampire being that likes to be bitten during sex.

Psychic -
A Psychic vampire is someone who drains emotional energy without giving anything back. This often makes the other person very tired, depressed, emotionally unbalanced, or worse if too much is drained - it's rare that a Psychic causes death though. There are four sub-divisions of the Psychic vampire: emotional, elemental, symbiotic, and sexual. Emotional vampires only feed on certain emotions, elemental vampires feed off of natural phenomena, symbiotics feed off of negative energy only, and sexual vampires feed off of sexual energy. Most Psychic vampires are unaware of their power, and they often take the energy they obtain and disperse it into their surroundings instead of making use of it. Those who are aware of their ability will obviously seek out means of feeding, and it some cases force their energy source to come forth from a victim. Though they are considered vampires, they are in no way similar to actual vampires. As a side note, they are often far too chirpy in the morning having fed while they slept, and they tend to have strong volatile personalities.

Immortality -
Vampires are not immortal. But they are very long lived. Vampires can live for hundreds, or maybe even thousands of years almost untouched by age and infirmity. The secret is in a single gene which all humans possess, but is active only in pre-pubescent children... and adult Vampires. The gene controls the production of a hormone called telomerase and telomerase is the key to virtual immortality. In humans, as cells divide the chromosomes containing the DNA, the DNA is replicated along with the rest of the cell. Each time this happens a portion of DNA on the end of the chromosomes called the telomere is lost. When the telomere is totally worn away, usually after about fifty divisions, the DNA unravels and the cell dies. In babies and small children, a hormone called telomerase repairs the damage to the telomeres allowing the cells to go on dividing long beyond the fifty division limit. Production of telomerase stops at puberty as the gene to produce it switches off for reasons as yet unknown and we begin to age.

One of the most profound effects of the Vampire retro virus plasmids, is to switch on the gene which controls the production of telemerase, and to boost its effectiveness with a version of its own in the packet of genetic material that fuses with the host's chromosomes. So as the Vampire lives, cell division can continue almost indefinitely allowing cell damage to be repaired, effectively leading to increased resistance to disease, efficient healing and of course youthful appearance.

Vampire Kiss -
When one imagines sharp teeth puncturing the skin, one often thinks it will be painful, right? Well in the sense of a vampire bite, it is far from painful. In fact, it is quite enjoyable for in the vampire's saliva there are endorphins which act as a natural pain reliever and bring a more pleasurable experience. Many people who are bitten one too many times will find themselves addicted to it like a drug, and in some cases they go on and become feeders to the vampire race. Though Tru Blood exists, some vampires still stick to their native way of feeding, and what better than willing humans to feed from?

Human Kiss -
Though this is a rare case, there have been findings of humans who have drank a vampire's blood for whatever reason they needed it, and upon so, they form a bond with that vampire. For the first couple of weeks, the human may experience rather sexual dreams of the vampire. In the vampire's point of view, from the moment their blood passes down the human's throat, they can feel the human's emotions. No matter where they are, the vampire will always know.

The Change -
The transition from human to Vampire takes place over a period of six to nine months during which the individual undergoes physical, physiological and mental transformation. Vampirism is passed on in two ways, as a virus through bodily fluids, (blood, saliva and to a lesser degree, semen) and genetically between generations. In order for the victim to become a vampire (assuming they have a healthy immune system), they would have to be drained of a good portion of their blood and exposed to a large dose of the virus through injection or consumption of the Vampire's fluids (usually blood). It is unlikely that the tiny dose of virus present in the saliva passed during feeding is sufficient to infect a healthy human. The viral content of the saliva serves to hide the Vampires visit should one choose to feed on a sleeping human. The vampire will bite the neck, inner knee or other soft area of the victim and withdraws around a pint and a half (a little under a litre) of blood. When the Vampire has left, the wound contains a small amount of the Vampire virus which immediately begins to infect the flesh around the wound. The wound then quickly closes over leaving no discernible mark as the vampire trait of fast healing effects the surrounding tissue. By the time this process is complete the infection, being so small, is easily dealt with by the immune system and eradicated. The victim awakes feeling weak and listless and maybe with a sore neck but with no suspicion that he has been visited by a Vampire during his sleep.

Genetically Modified Humans -
The added genes for Vampirism are submissive against normal human genes. This means that a child born to a couple where one is human (and not a carrier) and one is a Vampire will not become a vampire, although the child will carry the Vampire gene. A child born to two Vampires will always become a Vampire, although the infant will be born human and develop Vampirism as the extra genes activate at puberty. If two humans who carry the Vampire gene have a child then there is a possibility that the child will be a Vampire, however it also may be a carrier or have no Vampire genes whatsoever.

Basic Genetics -

All of the offspring are Human but carry the dormant recessive Vampire genes. The individuals will never become Vampires and most will not even have any signs of Vampire traits such as sensitivity to light or unusually high disease resistance.

The offspring have a 50/50 chance of being either Human carriers of the dormant recessive Vampire gene or of being pure Human.

H(v) + H(v) = H H(v) H(v) V
The offspring have a 25% chance of being a Human, a 50% chance of being a carrier of the dormant recessive Vampire gene and a 25% chance of manifesting Vampirism at puberty.

The offspring will all develop into Vampires, which kind of Vampire depends on ancestry & environment.

The offspring have a 50/50 chance of being either Human carriers of the dormant recessive Vampire gene or of being Vampires.

Vampires Are Altered Humans - TRUE
Vampires cannot be born as active Vampires, although there are certain circumstances where a person may be born human then develop Vampirism as they mature. Vampires are 'embraced' or turned by the introduction certain pathogens into the bloodstream via an exchange of bodily fluids.

Vampires Only Feed On Blood - FALSE
Haemavorous Vampires, those that feed on blood, are by far the most fascinating and varied, however there is another kind that feeds on the life-force generated by every living thing and especially humans. Most of these Vampires, known as Psychic Vampires are outwardly indistinguishable from humans and many do not share other Vampire weaknesses like aversion to sunlight or garlic. Many Psychic Vampires feed on the life-force or 'psychic energy' of those around them without ever knowing that they are doing so and remain blissfully unaware of their true nature. On the other hand, there is also the Dhampir who shares similarities with a vampire, but do not require blood like a vampire - they can freely indulge in human food.

i.e - This school provides Tru Blood in all blood types for the blood drinkers.

Vampires Are Only Active At Night - FALSE
It is true that the Vampire condition makes them extremely and painfully sensitive to sunlight, or more precisely ultra-violet radiation. However, this does not mean they cannot move about during the daylight hours. Humans have evolved as diurnal (daytime) animals but, despite poor night vision and a strong urge to sleep, they still spend a great deal of their night-time fully active - the same is true for Vampires in reverse. As long as the Vampire takes care not to expose his or her self to full on sunlight they are quite capable of acting out a life style approximating that of their human neighbors. In addition to this, contrary to Hollywood beliefs, Vampires do not burst into flames upon instant contact with the sun. It gradually weakens them...and then in some cases they do spontaneously combust.

Vampires Are Repelled Or Hurt By Garlic - TRUE
In fact most haemavorous Vampires are allergic or at least sensitive to the entire allium family which includes onions, chives, leeks, shallots and of course garlic. The degree of reaction varies from individual to individual but it is with garlic that the problem lies. Garlic contains a chemical which causes constriction of the throat and larynx leading to breathlessness and in extreme cases death through asphyxiation.

Vampires Are Immortal - TRUE/FALSE
Most vampires with the exception of one race are in fact mortal, although it's almost true in the sense that they live to a very old age. Vampires can of course be killed in all the same ways that a human can with the exception of resistance to some poisons. The misconception that Vampires can not be killed by conventional means may stem from their greater pain threshold, their considerable strength, and the fact that their blood clots much faster and wounds knit at an accelerated rate.

Vampires Sleep In Coffins - FALSE
Three words...what the ********? Why would they? Coffins make very uncomfortable beds. Vampires are not dead or undead. The coffin fixation is purely an invention of folk law and novelists. These days some Vampires make a point of having a coffin shaped coffee table or something of that sort as a kind of 'in joke' with their friends.

Vampires Have Super Strength - TRUE
Vampires enjoy a more efficient metabolism than most humans. Because of this, their bodies are able to perform more efficiently too. Most Vampire's strength is no more than any human could achieve, the difference is that a Vampire has this strength without effort or training whereas a human would have to spend long, hard, and regular hours in the gym to achieve the same results.

Vampires Fear Religious Symbols - FALSE
Vampirism has been around since the dawn of man, long before the birth of even the oldest surviving organized religion. Christian crosses and other religious icons hold no fear for Vampires, after all, a cross is only a symbol of faith and not the faith in itself. However, if the human who is brandishing the cross is sufficiently strong in their faith, if the belief in the icon's ability to repel the Vampire is absolute, then the Vampire can feel this in the human's psyche. Most vampires find this strong mental conviction unpleasant and will leave in search of less fervent prey. The human, of course, believes it is the cross that has repelled the Vampire and as a result their faith is strengthened further.

*Tru Blood -
Tru Blood is the product of many years of hard work, and it's all thanks to the Chinese science department. Though it was originally meant for people with blood-related diseases, vampires made great use of it. It was thanks to this "beverage" that vampires gradually exposed themselves to the world - they no longer feared the hunt for humans to satisfy their needs. With the revealing of vampires, lycanthropes shortly followed. Tru Blood comes in A, B, AB, and 0 positive or negative.

Lycanthropy -
In the books we see a variety of shifter types and species. Shapeshifters can be cursed, hereditary, infected or spelled; and between these four options one could reasonably argue that nearly any animal species could have a shapeshifter version.

On The Veiled Kingdoms we have chosen to focus on wolves, rats, and leopards, and thus the news trees for them may be the most extensive. This is not to say other animals are categorically disallowed, but that applications for them will need to be exceptional.

Like vampires, shapeshifter groups are hierarchical with the leaders holding great power over the rest. In turn though, the leaders work to protect their charges, both from themselves and the wider world. Groups tend to be close-knit for these reasons. This is true even if their animal predecessors are not generally social; that they were once humans (who are social) and need the protection and support of the group override the animal biology.

As of 1888, scientific distinctions between different kinds of shapeshifters have only recently come to light, and that information is held tightly and mostly by the elite fraternity that is the London medical society as shapeshifters are widely known as myth. Lycanthropes are persons who gained the ability to shapeshift through contagion-- contact with a lycanthrope's bodily fluids. Shapeshifters include both lycanthropes and persons who are able to shapeshift as a result of magic, such as a personal or family curse, a spell, or by some other means.

The lycanthropy (lycos (wolf) + anthropos (human)) disease, although originally a magical malady, was dubbed lycanthropy as the wolf strain is the most common strain and is the best known shapeshifter myth.

Infected -
The infected form of lycanthropy is the most familiar. The character has been infected with the shapeshifter virus, typically by bite or scratch. He or she is ruled by the moon and cannot help but shift when it is full.

Cursed -
The person has been cursed with lycanthropy by a witch or fey. Cursed shapeshifters are contagious, but individuals cursed with lycanthropy are curable by magical means-- usually when details of a curse are fulfilled.

Inherited -
There are multiple ways for shapeshifting to be passed on to later generations.

First, there are true hereditary types, such as weredogs, many wereswans, dragons and merfolk, and false hereditary types, such as werefoxes and weretigers.

A true hereditary type passes lycanthropy to their young because their shapeshifting is not tied to the moon. This is because their form of lycanthropy is derived from magical means, such as a family curse or ancient family guardian.

For mythical shapeshifters such as dragons, merfolk, naga, and lamia, they are not true lycanthropes, do not possess seperate beasts (as they are more beast than human), and are not tied to the moon in any way.

True hereditary lycanthropy is very difficult to pass through bite or scratch. For some kinds, it is impossible to infect a human or, at least, to do so with complete success.

False hereditary types are often very difficult to catch, too, but usually less so than true types. False hereditary types, such as weretigers, werefoxes, were-birds, and most were-reptiles, remain tied to the moon but possess abilities that allow them to pass lycanthropy to their offspring. For birds and reptiles, the trick is merely the ability to lay an egg. For lycanthropes such as weretigers and werefoxes, the trick lies in ancient secrets combined with special strengths innate to their kinds, most of which comes through exposure and practice.

Spelled -
Spelled shapeshifters use external means to achieve their forms. Most often, spelled shapeshifters are witches or possess some magical means to shapeshift. Spelled shapeshifters possess the strength and speed of lycanthropes but are not tied to the moon and are not contagious. Spelled individuals do not possess a beast within themselves.

Contagion -
Lycanthropy can only be passed with the shapeshifted individual is in full animal or partial animal form, hybrid, partial, or even by individuals possessing "stuck" traits such as eyes or teeth. Lycanthropy is passed via bodily fluids, usually by bite or scratch. It is not at all uncommon to pass lycanthropy during sex.

Physical Aspects -
- Shapeshifters are stronger and faster than humans. Strength often depends on size, too.
-Lycanthropes possess keener senses than their human counterparts even when the lycanthrope is in human form. Their senses are so sensitive, many of them can tell when an individual is lying or upset.
- Shapeshifters are effectively allergic to silver and feel physical pain from even skin contact.
- Most lycanthropes can recover quickly from any wound except those made by silver or fire.

Shape Changing -
Lycanthropes can take at least two forms: human and animal. Many can also take a hybrid form, a bipedal half-human, half-animal form. More powerful lycanthropes can selectively shift parts of their bodies, such as their fingers into claws, and exceptional lycanthropes may possess the ability to alter their human shapes as they wish.

Shapeshifting requires a great deal of energy. Lycanthropes must feed immediately after changing, although the more powerful lycanthropes can hold off for a little while. (It is not comfortable to hold back the beasts' needs and desires however.) Most lycanthropes will collapse into a comatose state for eight to twelve hours after shapeshifting back to their human forms. (This means the individual is vulnerable during that time.) Changing back to human form within four hours or less of shifting taxes even the most powerful shapeshifters, but there are exceptions to the rule.

Lycanthropes who spend too much time in animal form may not be able to shift back completely. As a result, some lycanthropes have fangs or voices or eyes resembling their animal form, even when in human shape. Such lycanthropes are contagious even when in their most human forms.

Other shapeshifters may have different forms available, and may experience different effects.

Other Abilities -
Like vampires, some shapeshifters possess uncommon abilities. Some shapeshifters are capable of commanding their true animal counterparts, e.g., a wererat can command rats. Some shapeshifters may be able to heal other shapeshifters. All werewolves may be able to commune with munin (ravens), but a few werewolves may be able to call or even channel the munin at will. A few shapeshifters can communicate telepathically with his or her groupmates. ...There are many different abilities that a shapeshifter might have; some are merely rarer than others.

Reproduction -
Most female lycanthropes cannot carry a pregnancy to term because the changes are too violent. There are exceptions, such as those types not tied to the moon, those who lay eggs, and those that have developed special "tricks" to avoid violent shifts or shifting altogether.

On the other hand, male lycanthropes can father children without difficulty. Although it is very dangerous to the human to copulate with that human unless the lycanthrope has a great deal of control over himself, his strength, and his beast, it is not uncommon for a lycanthrope, especially if he is not high in his group, to have a wife and child who are not lycanthropes.

A child conceived while the father is in animal form is at risk for rare defects (in the modern day setting of the books, it's known as Mowgli Syndrome). In addition to severe and rather animal like deformities, the fetus can develop at the speed for the animal, instead of a human, and can speed up rapidly at any time. However, these defects are unlikely if the lycanthrope's mate is another preternatural with healing abilities to match his own.

Vampiric Calls -
Just as a werewolf may be able to call and command true/natural wolves, it is not unheard of for a vampire to be able to call were-animals of a certain species. The call itself is a compelling feeling, a pleasant cogency to be near or serve a vampire, but that does not mean that the lycanthrope being called enjoys the call. It's perfectly understandable that an individual would not enjoy being forced into something or feeling as if he or she were being forced. The call is not one-sided either. Much of the time the calling vampire feels the urge to be near the animal type as it can be quite comforting if one enjoys such pleasantries.

Just as a sufficiently powerful person can withstand the eyes of a vampire, sufficiently powerful lycanthropes can resist a vampire's call, or even interfere with the call, preventing the vampire from calling other lycanthropes or animals.

Immortality -
Much like their blood-sucking opposites, werewolves are very long lived. They are not immortal, rather they age very slowly which is very close to a state of immortality. Also, due to the regeneration of physical tissue, they are immune from most physical diseases.

Basic Genetics -

All of the offspring are Human but carry the dormant recessive Lycanthropy genes. The individuals will never become Lycanthropes and most will not even have any signs of Lycanthrope traits.

H + H(l) = H H H(l) H(l)
The offspring have a 50/50 chance of being either Human carriers of the dormant recessive Lycanthropy gene or of being pure Human.

H(l) + H(l) = H H(l) H(l) L
The offspring have a 25% chance of being a Human, a 50% chance of being a carrier of the dormant recessive Lycanthropy gene and a 25% chance of manifesting Lycanthropy at puberty.

Assuming that the female lycanthrope is able to produce, the offspring will all develop into Lycanthropes, which kind of Lycanthrope depends on ancestry & environment.

Welcome Formal - To make up for the horrible introduction to the school, a dance has been re-arranged for Friday, September 11th at 8 o' clock. It is a formal dance, therefore, formal attire is required. During this time, Layla will give the actual speech welcoming students and teachers.

Scavenger Hunt - Though this activity was going to take place anyway, the rules have changed slightly to fit the amount of students and teachers who have arrived and to fit current circumstances. On Wednesday, September 9th, each student will pair up with another student(s) after breakfast to which everyone will be going into town. Each team will receive a camera and take pictures of the following items. Scavenger Hunt List The pair of students who have pictures of the most items or actions will earn 20 points for their family groups. In the case of a tie, the points will be split evenly.
