The sun had just begun to rise over the Kingdom of Zaibach, and the majority of the citizens were still tucked safely into bed. While the level of movement slowly began to rise, the streets of the town below the ancient yet majestic castle remained barren.... Save for one shabbily clad figure slinking around the outskirts of town...
The youngest Princess of the Kingdom of Asturia had not been to sleep that night. No. Instead she had been hard at work on escape attempt number seventy-two. Having waited until she was sure that everyone in the castle was fast asleep, Astraea had snuck out of the tower that served as the 'temporary' quarters for her and her sisters. It wasn't that she was being selfish, what with trying to get away all on her lonesome. On the contrary. The youthful female fought so hard for freedom for the very sake of her kin, just as much as for herself. However, it was less noticable for one of them to try to get away instead of all three, and both Tatiana and Yumei understood. Besides, she would never risk putting her sisters in more danger than they were already in, and instead carried out her wild plans on her own. Things were just better that way.
So, slinking quietly through the cold cobblestone halls, Astraea made her way to the servants quarters. Taking the term quiet as the dead to a whole new level, the girl felt her way around in the dark until coming to a stop before a large bureau. Pulling open the top drawer as carefully as possible, she sifted through the peasant clothes until she found a few items that would fit her thin frame. Using the inky blackness to her advantage, the princess slid out of her nightgown, folding it carefully before placing it in the bureau instead. The fabric was a high quality silk with embroidered lace lining the edges, and it should serve as a suitable replacement for the items which she had taken. Astraea had never liked it very much anyway. It had been a gift from her kidnapper during her first few days in Zaibach, accompanied by an entire wardrobe of similar quality, and the princess had been forced to accept it. It wasn't like she had had much of a choice. She had been brought here with only the clothes on her back, and it was practically impossible to make it through a week with the same garment. However, if she was finally able to make her way to freedom, well, she wouldn't have any need of such things now, would she?
Moving swiftly, Astraea was quick to garb herself in the attire of a lower-classman before making her way back out into the lonely corridors. As she hurried down yet another staircase and into the dining hall, the girl knelt down by the firepit, scooping up the ash from the previous day in her tiny hands. She took a few moments to cover any areas of her snow white skin that was exposed in a thin layer of soot, striving for a grungy, pauper-esque feel. Finally, the princess took her long silver hair and tied it up in a messy bun before hiding it beneath an old tattered hat that she had swiped from upstairs. Satisfied that she had hid her identity to the best of her ability, much like she had in her childhood when she snuck out to mingle with the townspeople of her own kingdom, Astraea got to her feet, made her way to the entry hall, pushed open the great oak door and exited the castle. The Princess knew better than to take the main road, as many of her other attempts at escape had been thwarted before she had made it half way to the town. Even more had been stopped before she had even had a chance to leave the castle itself. This time, however, the girl took the cover of night to her advantage, stealing past the sleepy guards undetected. While it took her the rest of the night to scramble her way down the rocky area behind the great stone building, she did make it. Sure, she was up a few more cuts and bruises then when she had started out, but it would be a suitable sacrifice if it allowed her to see the Asturian sun once more. The entire time Astraea had been picking her way down the rockface, her mind had been in her homeland. With her mother and father, who must be worried half to death by now. With... with Raven, whose face was becoming nothing more than a faded memory. It took a lot to scare the icy young girl, but this fact terrified her to no end. Would her feelings for her fiancee fade as well? ... .... Were they already less intense then before, and she had yet to notice?
Pushing such thoughts from her mind, Astraea put herself on high alert as drew closer to the town. The sun had only just begun to rise in the sky, providing some light, but she cursed this fact as much as she welcomed it. She had been safer in the darkness, and her solitary figure would only be more noticable in the empty streets. Although she now looked no more like a Princess than a lowly beggar would, it didn't make her feel any better. Time and time again her vaults for freedom had been thwarted by him, and she wouldn't be surprised if he was watching her right now, waiting to drag his prize back to her cage. Taking a deep breath, Astraea left the cover of the trees and darted into the town, retreating into the first dark alley she came across. Pressing hers body flat against the wall, the girl struggled to
calm herself down. This was the farthest she had ever made it, and if she kept her wits about her and continued on slow
and steady... well, she just might make it. While the princess still couldn't shake the feeling that she was being
watched, she did her best to dump it on paranoia, poking her head carefully out into the street to check that the coast
was clear before she made her next move.
