*Blood and Fire* Closed
![]() It was a time of darkness and despair. Crops withered as soon as their stalks emerged from the hard, parched earth. Cattle died of mysterious ailments. The people of this earth were famished, dying, praying to the gods for a single drop of rain. They remembered a time when the dragons would plunge down from the skies, their wings spread and scales gleaming in the sun, bringing with them a downpour of precious rainwater. As the people starved, their love for the dragons was replaced by a fiery hatred, from the bottom of their souls. The dragons had seen that the beings of this earth had become corrupted, greedy. They no longer prayed to the dragons, expressing their thanks for the life-giving rain. So, the dragons decided that these beings should perish, and be replaced by those who would always look into the sky and always remember the dragons’ kindness. The inhabitants of this earth begged and pleaded, but the dragons would not relent. The people became angry with the dragon folk. Those of noble rank employed dragon hunters to track down and kill the dragons, offering bountiful rewards of gold and land. Soon every humanoid race, from the humans in their towns, the elves in their forest villages, and the dwarves and goblins in the mountains, had their own dragon hunters to seek down and destroy the magnificent yet terrible beasts. In the battles that ensued, many a dragon and hunter lost their lives. Their numbers dwindling, the dragons retreated to a secure mountaintop high in the Himalayas, the only safe place left in the world. The ever kind Oriental dragons welcomed their brethren, and comforted those who had lost a loved one. At this draconic council, they argued and debated how to protect themselves from the threat of the hunters. However, they were mistrustful of one another. The dragons of the west and east despised one another, The amphitheres and the lindworms were also reluctant to be involved in any strategy that involved the other. Disputes broke out, and everything was in utter chaos. Around the world, dragon hunters restlessly sharpened their weapons, which ranged from spears and bows to magic and sorcery to teeth and claws. They stalked the land, alone, in small groups, or in great numbers. They were admired by their races, welcomed in every town, treated like heroes. They were both feared and respected. Each dragon hunter was eager for the either the fortune that came with taking down a dragon, or the pleasure of a kill. Both the dragons and the hunters could feel it, like a cold chill that passes over one as winter approaches. A war was coming. |
