......."CATCH HIM!"
.......Everyone around looked up as the blue angel boy fell out of the sky and a number of Keepers scrambled to catch him. Lucien and June prepared themselves to lunge at the little one, Mattheis himself had turned around to react but was ran over by Telosia('s deadly huge bosom), who too stumbled over in her attempt and nearly suffocated the Captain in the process. Althalia's attempt was no more successful as she rushed toward Kaito and tripped over the sprawled out legs of the ship Captain and Junior Captain. In the end, Jace ended up safely catching the worn-out Keeper, much to everyone's relief.
......."Mm-mprrrph!" Mattheis's arms flailed around desperately until he was finally released from his prison. The Junior Captain's apologies were repeated over and over again as she removed herself from the oxygen-deprived Hylravine Captain, whose face had apparently revealed itself to be undecided in becoming pale in his suffocation or turning red at the second encounter with the... highly endowed woman's breasts. At that point, he came to a resolution - he would never ogle huge breasts again. The damned things were weapons of mass destruction! Regardless, the apologies on his end were repeated no less.
.......“I’m sorry! I'm sorry!”
......."Not your fault! It's not your fault, ma'am!"
.......Suddenly, all eyes turned again as the Grim Angel approached Jace. “Boy… If you can get met in that tower… Then you shall have my debt and gratitude...”
.......Mattheis raised an eyebrow in both surprise and curiosity at this. He vaguely remembered the man being carried in among the injured, and now he seemed... good as new. The Captain knew only rumors and tidbits of trivia about the Grim Angels from his years of sailing the Life-Stream, but knew enough to know that they were a rare sight outside of their realm upon Alar. What was his purpose here on Vectiras?
.......Amidst his curiosity, Mattheis was about ready to approach the Grim Angel to get a closer examination of the rare being until Telosia stepped in. “Well! There nothing we can do about it at the moment. I am sure we all need our rest for the night, for Arak knows we’ll need it! Come on… uh… Uhm, Mister shadowsili cute boy kid… We should discuss our plans of action…. What is your name anyways?”
.......As Jace proceeded to introduce himself, then June, he decided that this was probably a good time to get proper introductions going, as well. He dusted the sand off his uniform again and, with a bow, introduced himself formally. "Captain Mattheis Hiashin III of the Hylravine Militia Battleship Preposterous, which stands.... over there." He said the last few words regretfully, gesturing toward the beached wreck of his pride and joy a short distance away, where still more salvaging teams crawled in and out with supplies and belongings.
......."And Prince, Telosia! And Pr-!" Althalia had snuck up behind him and popped up from beneath his cape with the excited exclamation, only to be silenced by a swift hand to her lips. Ruhalis had followed their path, as well, and was now struggling to cover his sister's mouth with his hand. Mattheis gritted his teeth with annoyance and quickly changed the subject as the Communicator dragged his sister away, partly scolding her and partly discussing possible reinforcements and repairs for her Skyboard.
......."Seeing as you're the acting Captain of the Keepers here, Miss Telosia, it looks like we'll need to work together to get ourselves out of this mess, so... the Hylravine Militia is at your service." The Hylravine crewmen could hear the slight reluctance in his voice in the last part - so far, the Junior Captain had demonstrated mostly clumsiness and an obvious, mother-like adoration for children. Not that she hadn't demonstrated authority at all, of course - she'd taken her position quite well for someone who was suddenly thrust into the role by the loss of her superior. "I do agree with Miss Yakushi here; let's discuss this over dinner."

.......Ship's Log, H.K.M.S. Preposterous - Kingdom Date P.R. 2138, 17th Day of Mid-Harvest
..........Approximately 10 hours after launch from Hylravi's National Airfield en route to Krux, we were caught in a Nith ambush above Vectiras's atmosphere and stranded upon the island of Aedif. The Preposterous is decommissioned out of service and she remains, fortunately, beached up and above water. The other ships that crashed, including the Keeper ship (The?) Lady were not quite as fortunate, as they now rest at the bottom of the sea.
.......As far as I know, all of the Keepers managed to reach land safely - except one. Team 9-AC Keeper Captain Hale Savitat is missing currently being held prisoner by the Nith, presumably at the World Eater Tower across the waters, which sucks up this humble island world's life by the hour. As for our own numbers, out of 283 passengers and crewmen aboard the Preposterous, 67 were lost, and one missing as a result of Shadowsili action.
.......The Tower. It stands like a disgusting tyrant there, overshadowing the entire world with darkness. An... ancient rage of origins unknown burns deep within me as I gaze upon it, but I cannot harness that flame, for Vylli is insufficient, and Aura is the commanding force of the battlefield now. No Nexus, no fight - all I can do is help the Keepers in any way I can and hope for the best. That Tower - it has stripped me of my humor and hope, and for others, their lives.
.......In a most ironic turn of events, we have found hope in Jace Vistus, a young Shadowsili boy. Initially, I felt a sense of mistrust, as did my people. But so far, I've seen nothing from him but a genuine will to help us - and I can't help but admire that. As one of the Nith, of course, it's only logical that he would have access to the Tower, and perhaps the power to end it. With the probabilities so low, I would have refused outright, but we .... are desperate. All the chips are in, and the cards are being laid on the table - it's all or nothing.
.......Everything now rests in the hand and claw of a boy who teeters on the edge between light and darkness.
.......Mattheis tore out another hunk of meat from a kebab as he scribbled furiously into the thick journal in his lap with the quill from his hair. He was the last among his men to get a meal, and was still finishing up the last of his dinner while others were already making preparations for the battle to come in what would be a sunless morning. Teams of specialists were working on improvised explosives while others quickly fashioned and reinforced armors using scraps from the ship and chipped-off Vylli crystals, and finished armor and weapons were delivered to those without them, including the Dreskan survivors and the Vectiran reinforcements. Ruhalis and Althalia were busy repairing their boards and exchanging crystals next to the Captain... with Skysplicer's engine faced toward him.
......."Alright, so we stick this crystal in here, and affix this here, and..." The Chief Communicator raised his arms in celebration. "Now all we do is test the engines!"
.......His little sister grinned, balancing the repaired board in her outstretched hands. "Awesome!" she exclaimed, as she pumped in a bit of blue Hylravine mana from her hand into the engine. There were a few moments of silence as the two waited for the board to activate.
......."Damn it, I told you we were supposed to put that crystal over the-"
.......BFWOOOMM! A powerful blast of air suddenly exploded out of the back of the board, and both the Saloshins held tightly onto it as it blew over the unfortunate Captain seated next to them, sending his dinner and his precious Ship's Log into the campfire. Some of the crew members nearby snickered at the spectacle as Althalia quickly shut off the engine, and the siblings looked apologetically at the Captain as he silently stared at the empty void in his hands and lap.
......."Great. Real [********] great." He muttered, grabbing what remained of the journal out of the fire, putting out the flames consuming the paper with his cape, and marching off to sit next to Jace and Joshua, where he wouldn't be blown over by some kid's ridiculous board.
......."...On second thought, let's keep the turbo there."
.......Mattheis seated himself comfortably next to Jace. After the loss of his dinner to the pair of blonde Skyriding idiots, he decided that he'd pretty much lost his appetite and shook his head at the offer of the gooey sweet in Jace's claw. The Captain then looked down at the blackened journal and decided that he'd lost his appetite for writing as well, and put it away.
......."So, our plan of action." He said, not particularly looking at anyone, but directing it mostly toward Telosia and Jace, "I've been thinking, and I've something of an idea. The organization is a little more detailed for my men, but our objective is simple - we'll set up a distraction and cover while Jace and a team of you Keepers and Mr. Grim Angel get into the Tower. We don't really have a lot to work with since we'll probably be fighting on open beach and water, but we'll try to cover for the infiltration team as best as we can. 'Soon as you're in the Tower, though, it'll be all up to you. And whatever you need to do, Jace, it needs to be done quickly."
.......His tone was dull and almost nonchalant in a way as he continued, nodding his head at a group of Drakes and Aquilines off a ways from the campfire, "Our 'bombers' will cover for the... aerial specialists I've assigned to carry you to the Tower's base."
.......From the other side of the campfire, Althalia's face contorted into an expression of uncertainty. "On the backs of dragons? Seriously? That's kind of... old-school, don'tcha think?"
.......A huff of air blew a stray strand of hair away from the Captain's scarred face as many of the drakes in the area snorted fire from their nostrils and threw sharp retorts back at her, seemingly insulted by Althalia's comment. "Don't be underestimatin' us old-schoolers, lassie!" "Flyin' technology and magic'll never be sure as natural flyers, y'board-lubberin' Skyrider!" She blushed slightly; the aerial specialist had not intended to be insulting. However, dragonriding was an old art in Hylravi and was very common in battles, at least prior to the invention of the levitation spell, Skyboards, and Worldships - her real worry was that the idea might be too predictable. Althalia voiced out this concern, though it was still drowned out by the chattering. Mattheis patiently waited for the complaining growls and hisses to die down before he answered, noting Ruhalis out of the corner of his eye, who hid his face in his palms in embarrassment.
......."I guess, but if you have any better ideas, do tell. We don't exactly have a lot to work with.
......."Anyway." His appetite having decided to return somewhat, Mattheis plucked a marshmallow from Jace's claw and popped it in, taking some time to chew it and lick the melted sugar from his teeth. The taste was familiar to him, but mmmmm, the texture. "Mm, these are good. Like cloud candy. Hm. Ahem, anyway. Our Technomages are currently in the process of lifting and turning the Preposterous around. I know what you're going to ask - what for? There's no chance of her flying again, but her cannons may still be manually operational if we get them repaired in time, and we can fire on the Tower from the ship."
......."With all of us... in the Tower?!"
......."By the Immortals, no!" came the surprised exclamation. Mattheis recoiled slightly as if he'd been hit. "That's why you need to hurry up, shut down that Tower, and get out of there... At least, if this is the plan we go by." He said, turning to Telosia. "Are there any further suggestions from the acting Captain?"
* * * The Eye of the Storm * * *
.......Mattheis awoke abruptly from his sleep in a cold sweat, heart pounding and eyes wide. All of them... all of them had died gruesome deaths at the thousand inky hands of the black sea and ashen sky. The screams, the sights of familiar faces permanently contorted into expressions of shock and horror as they were slaughtered, like the death masks of the executed. The ocean, the ocean was black, but he knew it was filling with blood. A hundred-thousand-million-infinite screams of the dead and the undead and those never born, shrieks piercing into his ears and head and mind. And then, then those eyes, those yellow, mindless, soul-less eyes that stared into his very core from every vantage point and perspective of the dream, stripping him of his heart and soul and hope and dream and humanity as their golden gaze filled his entire body with absolute and total terror.
.......And then nothing! Just a nightmare, Mattie. Just... a nightmare. Get a hold of yourself. He started up, struggling to get his uniform and armor on in the darkness of his tent and bleary eyes. A few minutes of clicking armor pieces together and making sure everything was comfortably and firmly on, and the Militia Captain strode out of his tent, red cape billowing out behind him and the Hiashin family crest dangling from a chain around his neck, clinking against his polished armor with every step. He shivered slightly as he looked down upon the pin. If he had any explanation for it, it would be that Fate itself was breathing down his neck.
.......I guess... this is the kind of thing all of us were born for. To... set an example, and die for the future if that's... what it comes down to. Why, Matt? Why do you hesitate now? He took a deep breath, and stepped forward out of the trees into the camp. Striding into the center of the site, which was now dark without the light of the campfires, he stared down at the extinguished campfire for some minutes without much thought, and nearly jumped in surprise when a hand tapped his shoulder armor.
......."Hee, I thought Hiashins were supposed to be fearless." Althalia said with amusement, gently holding his arm. Such a nuisance of a girl; however did her brothers tolerate her so well? "Dude, has anyone ever told you that you talk in your sleep? And thrash around?"
.......He snorted as he gave her that unforgettably displeased, sideways look, noting her light armor over her Keeper uniform and the board strapped to her back. "Legends are s**t sometimes. And no, no one's ever told me that. Thank you for informing me that I need to get a soundproofed tent." His blunt words were replied with a giggle, and a comment on his cursing - something about him needing to be a "proper Prince", and not "swearing like a sailor"... Like a sailor? Hm. Ironic, that. With that semi-humorous thought, Mattheis tuned her out, turning the Skyrider's teasing words into a mishmash of mumbles and blahs in his mind; there were times to be serious about a situation and times not to be, and he didn't understand how she could be so damned... happy. Positive he could understand - happy, no. This was not happy-casual-troublemaker Captain Mattheis standing here, this was irritated-angry-hopeless-trying-to-survive Captain Mattheis.
.......A pair of finned water Drakes crawled in from the sea on all fours and swiftly pounded their way toward their Captain. Their silvery tails swished back and forth as they came to a skidding stop before him and sat up on their hind legs at full attention, snapping him out of his thoughts. Rubbing their webbed claws together and grinning, they announced in low, long, gurgling hisses, "We ssset themm up the bomb, Cap'nnnn."
.......A most foul smirk formed upon his face. "Oh, the water mines, yes, that. And the detonators?" The pair confirmed it with a united nod of their shark-like heads. "Good. Go wake our 'air force' and the Keepers, our time is closing in; we need to get the bombs and passengers loaded on their backs. Quickly now." They obliged, and Mattheis and Althalia watched as they scrambled off. In the meantime, others began to rise and gather. Lucien was examining Jace's arm, some fighters were helping each other put on their armor, four Hylravine spearmen were attaching Militia flags to their polearms, a group of Dreskans were conversing in a language foreign to them, and a mixed group mingled around a tiny fire, devouring what may well be their last meal. The pair watched and relished the sights and peace for a moment as if in a trance, a quiet between two battles... like the eye of a storm. It was terrifying, but beautiful in ways unexplainable... and both of them knew, all of them knew, that the sun would not rise, and that this could be their last hour.
......."So many explosives and traps, Prince. Where's your honor gone to, hmm?"
......."Bah, honor. If we're going to die, we're going to go out with a 'bang'. That's how my forefathers did it, that's how the Militia does it.
......."And these Nith... are going to get a royal asskicking."
.......Everyone around looked up as the blue angel boy fell out of the sky and a number of Keepers scrambled to catch him. Lucien and June prepared themselves to lunge at the little one, Mattheis himself had turned around to react but was ran over by Telosia('s deadly huge bosom), who too stumbled over in her attempt and nearly suffocated the Captain in the process. .......A most foul smirk formed upon his face.
And sailing upon this ship of blackened steel......

Neera glanced up at Jack, who had just entered the room from the front of the Firehawk. She noticed that he was still wearing the bandage, and for some reason, it produced a spark of a good feeling (she wasn't sure which one it might be) inside of her chest. At the sight of her friend, the girl's countenance changed instantly. Her eyes came to life, and her blank expression was replaced with an attentive one. At the sight of him, she perked up, like a plant coming alive beneath the morning sun after a night in the darkness.
Jack turned to Neera, crouching in front of where she was sitting and gently pulling the gun from her hands. "Thanks... you did good, and thanks for saving me... back there." Neera beamed at the praise. Jack took the gun and quickly turned away from her. He moved towards the front of the ship again, but stopped before leaving the room, hesitating as if remembering something. Neera watched as he pulled an apple from his pocket. Polishing it, he handed it to the silver-haired girl who still sat on the floor. "You must be hungry... there will be more stuff to eat when we get to Adamitte but this is it for now... rest up... you're going to... need it."
Neera tilted her head to the side slightly, wondering at the expression on his face. What does he mean...? She looked down at the shiny red apple in her hands and smiled, forgetting the foreboding in his voice. Apples... Neera thought back to when she woke up beneath the Firehawk and Jack gave her a picnic with all the food from the ship, all the apples he'd had. It was almost as if he'd already known...
Neera held the fruit up to her face and inhaled the scent, smiling happily at the fragrance.
How much I love apples.
As Jack's ship sped on towards Adamitte, Neera turned towards the window. Crawling across the floor, she came to the glass and rested her cheek against its cool surface, putting a small, pale hand next to it. The Lifestream... the place where all life was born and returned to. It was mesmerizing.
Wasn't life beautiful?
. . .
Neera blinked and sat up, slowly coming to the realization that she'd fallen asleep. She rubbed her eye groggily and massaged the side of her face that had been pressed to the cold glass of the window, running a hand through her silvery hair. Her fingers absently strayed to a soft brown horn hidden above her forehead, and she paused, caught in momentary contemplation.
The Shadowsili glanced out the window, and such a grand view greeted her eyes that she found herself unable to breathe for a few moments. What is this place? Below was a world she'd never seen before, a place so beautiful that she'd never imagined something like it could exist. Shining water all around, tall spires, grand architecture... a giant, gleaming city that seemed to float in the midst of an immense river amongst a breathtaking set of huge, tiering waterfalls.
Surely, this was a place where gods lingered, if such things existed.
The ship rocked slightly as it pulled into a towering spire where many other ships zoomed in and out. Neera's mouth hung slightly agape as she watched them - like a great flock of multi-colored birds that flew into a huge tower-nest, their movements fluid and silent.
After the ship was parked, footsteps alerted Neera of Jack's approach. She glanced up at him, eagerness shining in her eyes, still in awe of the city below.
"Morning sunshines. We're stopping off here for a bit, I'm going to go pick up some food and supplies, just stay here and I'll be right back."
With only the smallest disappointment, she accepted the gun as he passed it to her once again. "Going to trust you to keep him down for me again while I'm gone... just sit tight okay?" He smiled and patted her on the head, and Neera found the corner of her mouth rising ever so slightly. It was almost as if she depended on that, now - his acceptance. It banished the dismay she'd felt at realizing she couldn't follow him into the city. She glanced down at her clothing briefly. Of course... I probably wouldn't fit in very well... thought Neera with a tinge of remorse. Jack knew that too, she was sure. He knew what was best. How could I ever fit in, in a place so beautiful and perfect as this? Do humans really live here? Or gods...? Surely the beings that inhabit such a magnificent place must be magnificent themselves...
Neera reached up to gingerly touch one of her horns again, only briefly. It was soft under her fingers, like a piece of wood that had been rubbed smooth. The horns that marked her... she could hide them, cover them with hoods, keep them from the sight of others... but somehow, she knew people would always realize that she was different. It was the way she acted, her skittish, animal-like movements, the way she stood and carried herself with her shoulders slightly hunched and her face shaded, as if she were hiding from the world. It was her eyes - their color, the keen observance in them, the unnatural sharpness. It was the uncanny swiftness of her feet, the way she floated over the ground. If people saw her eating, it would be even more obvious. Neera stood out like a sore thumb wherever she went, never mind the horns that seemed to spawn hate. Even if she covered them up, she knew she'd still be recognized. She just didn't know how the live... like them. The past eight months, the part of her life that she remembered fully, she'd had to live like an animal - in the forest, among animals. And like a thief, stealing from the humans. It was the only way she could survive, so it's what she'd done.
The Shadowsili knew that at least that much of what they said about her was true. She wasn't really human.
The thing that has makes me an outcast... why doesn't it matter to him? Her right hand dropped from the side of her head, though the smooth feel of her horn remained on her fingertips. She held Shino's heavy weapon in both hands and stared down at it. Jack's acceptance of her was a mystery, but she didn't dare question it lest everything fall apart.
"Going to trust you..."
Trust? Was that it? Was that the thing that brought people together? Trust... Neera raised her eyes, two bright spheres the color of velvet roses, to meet Jack's. She trusted him, she decided. She trusted him because he trusted her when no one else would. She would follow him to the ends of the universe, if that's where he wanted to go. She would follow him... Not just because she had nowhere else to go. Because she trusted him.
That must be one of the most precious gifts that people can give each other, thought Neera. Trust.
Jack's voice brought her out of her thoughts again. "Look I'm... for leaving you... again... Sorry." Neera watched him turn away and take a deep breath; she could see his back rise slightly as he pulled in the air. The Shadowsili tilted her head slightly. His voice sounded strained... Was something bothering him?
"Well I'm off. Take care of yourselves." Jack's footsteps seemed to resound on the floor of the ship as he walked out. Neera listened to the sound of him stepping onto the ground outside. She strained to hear as his steps faded, listened as long as she could, until the sound of Raine's worldship dock was all that remained. The whir of worldships as they touched down; the sound of people speaking and shouting signals; the clatter of feet on polished stone as people passed; the distant rush of waterfalls. These were the things that Neera heard, and nothing else.
Neera resumed her position across from Jack's "bounty" and took up her blank stare again. After a minute or so of silence, Neera blinked at Shino, remembering something. Setting his gun down beside her, she pulled out of her pocket the apple Jack had given her. The tiniest of smiles twitched at the corner of her mouth for a moment as she polished it on her ragged dress, watching the way it shined in the light of the window. She looked back up at Shino. Took a bite. Chewed slowly.
Fleetingly, she wondered if he might be hungry, too. She almost considered sharing with him.
Then she remembered what he'd done to Jack, and Neera took the biggest bite she could manage, crunching it loudly and gazing at Shino with narrowed eyes.
Neera was only halfway done with her apple when the sound of heavy footsteps rang out at the entrance of the Firehawk. She stiffened and paused in her chewing, every muscle in her body tensing at the sound. Something wasn't right. Those weren't Jack's footsteps...
The door of the ship was still open, Neera realized. Had Jack forgotten to close it?
Alarmed, Neera stood in time to see seven men in black suits flood Jack's ship. Momentarily, her mind blanked, such was her shock. Then Neera swung up her arms, pointing the gun at them. The men flashed weapons out of their clothing and raised them as the first one began shouting. Panic rose inside of her, and the silver-haired girl backed away slightly, towards Shino. The man at the head of the group said something else that she didn't hear. Neera squeezed her eyes shut. She pulled the trigger.
Several shots rang out, but they weren't hers. In fact, Neera hadn't even finished pulling the trigger; she hadn't shot a single bullet. But the other men had, if only to frighten her. Their method worked - the girl was so startled at the sound of the shots that she dropped the gun, and it clattered to the floor with a loud clang. The bullets from the suited man's gun also went into the floor, but they stayed embedded there with two loud thuds.
Instinctively, Neera had put her hands over her ears and ducked when the gunshots rang out. Not missing a beat, several of the suited men lunged forward to restrain her. The Shadowsili girl felt their strong arms around her ribcage, the hold so tight that it hurt. She was promptly slammed onto the floor of the ship, the breath knocked out of her. It was such an intense feeling that Neera thought she would die right then and there. She gasped on the floor helplessly as the men shuffled around her, quickly and efficiently tying her hands with a tight knot of rope. Within the cabin, she could hear the silver-haired boy shouting and saying lots of curses, so she guessed that they were doing the same with him.
The girl was roughly pulled to her feet. Someone put a hand over her mouth to silence her - which was useless because she couldn't speak anyway - and Neera, realizing the opportunity, opened her mouth and bit down as hard as she could. The man cursed and tried to pull his hand away but she clung tightly. He swung her to the side, but when she wouldn't relent, another one of the men took charge.
Stars burst before Neera's eyes as the fist came down over her skull. She stumbled backwards, blinded by the hit, and the men wasted no time in shoving a gag into her mouth and blindfold over her eyes. Some sort of cloak was thrown over her shoulders, the large hood obscuring her horns and identity. This would make transport easier for the men in black. It would be better if no one on the docks saw the face of the Shadowsili and raised a ruckus.
She struggled in their grasp, but the suited men were too strong for her in her weakened state, and Neera had no choice but to submit to their jostling. Neera felt her feet stumble over the steps of Jack's ship as something hard was pushed into her back. She tripped and nearly fell on her face, but one of the suited men caught her and pulled her up by her arm, prodding her to make her move onwards.
When she tripped, something tumbled out of Neera's skirt and landed on the ground beside the entrance of the Firehawk. It was Neera's sketchbook.
Without noticing the book, the group of men in business suits herded their two charges towards another part of the dock. The men made a tight formation around the two, not only to keep them surrounded but also to minimize the chances of other people seeing the silver-haired strangers.
A soft wind blew through the Woldship Tower Dock, rustling the pages of a small, forgotten book next to a suddenly quiet ship. The worn, leather-bound sketchbook was mostly empty, but several pages had skillfully-drawn sketches on them. Most of the sketches showed animals, nature scenes, and a few dwellings, but the last two pictures were distinct. One page had a picture of the very ship the book now lay beside. The other page showed a boy and a girl sitting at some sort of picnic, their faces smiling under sunlight.
In the empty cabin of the Firehawk, a half-eaten apple rolled across the floor and came to rest against the wall.
. . .
Pain shot through Neera's knees as she was pushed into a kneeling position on the hard stone ground. The cloak was pulled off of her head, and the the blindfold and gag were removed. Neera gasped for breath as if she'd just surfaced from underwater, such was the relief of being ungagged. When she breathed, her ribs hurt. Her bruised cheekbone throbbed where she'd been slammed into the floor, and her head was still ringing from the punch. So that was what it felt like to be hit with a heavy, blunt object...
Then she realized where she was.
She guessed she was still in the same worldship tower, but in a more secluded dock; no other ships were around this one. Neera looked up. She actually had to tilt her head back to see the entirety of the ship before her, it was so gigantic. The girl stared in awe. The thing was many, many times bigger than Jack's ship. It was huge. What could they possibly use something like this for?
Something clicked loudly beside her head, and Neera glanced sideways to see a big black metal gun pointed right at her. She swallowed.
"Don't try anything," was the only explanation she got out of the man pointing his gun at her.
She had no idea why they were so mad at her. What was going on? Were people punished this much for living in the forest and stealing food every once and awhile? She'd only done it when she couldn't find anything to eat by herself... And how could they class her with that... that... brute beside her, the rude-mouthed boy who had hurt Jack? Sure, they looked sort of the same, but...
To her left, Neera spied Jack's "bounty," who was being treated with the same lack of respect she was. She looked down, a bad feeling rising within her. Jack had trusted her to look after his bounty, after all, and she'd failed him...
Jack...
Neera looked away from the ship, daring to turn her head just the slightest bit to look down the worldship dock. He would come for them, right...?
He would come for her... at least...
Right...?
A man paced before Neera and Shino, observing their uncovered faces. He smiled slowly and nodded in satisfaction. "Yes... Yes, these are the ones. Good." His smile stretched sideways, like the mouth of a serpent. "Very good."
Neera didn't like the sound of his voice.

xxxx⇨ G.P.S. tracking// Island of Aedif, Vectiras
On a dusty street corner, a little red-headed girl crouched, eyes staring vacantly into the busy street. Crowds of people walked by her, kicking up dust beneath their feet, but none took notice of the skinny girl clothed in rags. Her skin was tan from constant supervision of Smoke's burning sun, her long, bright orange hair tangled and unkempt. Her hazel eyes were unblinking; she stared in the direction of the crowd, but it was as if she saw right through them.
Down the street, a group of vagabond children played, their clothes equally torn and dirty. They laughed as they tossed dirt at each other, the younger ones squealing as they chased up and down the street.
"Hey, Rai." A shadow fell over the small girl who sat in the dust apart from the others. "Rai." The shadow belonged to a teenage boy with brown hair and shabby, but more well-kept clothes. He stopped and stared down at the girl on the street. After a few moments, he sighed, shaking his head. She never answered, hardly spoke a word to anyone. Then again, among an orphan gang, you had to expect at least one like that. Smoke was the type of place that seemed to cultivate scarred pasts.
"Rai, we're headin' back to the warehouse now. Tag along or you'll get left behind, okay? We leave in a few minutes." He paused, as if expecting an answer. The girl remained silent and unmoving, still staring at the street. The boy's shadow relented as he turned on his heel and moved away, and the sun came back on the girl's face. She squinted her hazel eyes into it and turned away, letting out a cough.
A few moments later, another shadow appeared across Rai's vision. But it wasn't the same one as before.
She glanced to the side without moving her head.
"Can I sit here?" asked the boy standing at her side.
No answer.
The boy sat down. He looked to be about eleven or twelve, perhaps a little older than Rai. His hair was sandy blond, his eyes a vibrant, lively green-blue. Rai looked away from him, continued staring at the street. She remembered when he joined the group a few days ago. She'd thought he'd looked kind of sad and lonely then, but he seemed to have regained some of his confidence over the past few days. What was his name again...?
The boy spoke up. "You're name's Rai, right?" The girl called Rai didn't say anything. "My name's Tristan." Silence.
"She never talks to anyone, you know," said Cecil, the brown-haired teenager from earlier. He was one of the older boys in the group, and thus helped lead. He scratched his shaggy bush of hair. "Anyway, we're going back now. Better come with or the sun'll set on you and you'll be left out here alone. Come on, now." Cecil put his hands on his hips, waiting for them to stand.
Rai didn't move. Tristan looked up at Cecil. "We'll be right there, promise."
Cecil raised an eyebrow and shrugged. "Well... just make sure you're there before dark. You know what happens," he said ominously, turning and walking back to the others. They heard his voice echo a rallying call down the street, and the rambunctious group of homeless children began walking away, chattering as they went.
. . . <<< NOT AN ANGEL >>>
The sun was beginning to set on the far horizon, beyond the low squares of the town buildings. Light streamed through the streets a golden brown, illuminating the dust clouds that whirled across the walkways. Street traffic had died down to a trickle as families made their ways back home and the last workers of the day shuffled back to their apartments with tired feet, anticipating warm meals and the embrace of their families.
Rai looked down the street with the same expressionless face, brown with dust that had accumulated over the course of the day.
Abruptly, she stood. The girl turned towards Tristan, who also stood, glad that she'd finally decided to go. Without a word, Rai started walking down the street. She knew the path to the warehouse where the orphans slept, had walked it countless times by now.
The two walked in silence for awhile, until finally Tristan spoke up. "Rai, why do you sit like that? Every day you sit there, watching the people walk by. You never talk to the others, or play with them, or anything." He looked at her. Why did she create her own loneliness like that?
She didn't answer for awhile. Then, she said quietly, "I'm looking for them." Her voice was a flat noise, empty of intonation.
"Looking... for who?" asked Tristan, curious.
"My..." She stopped. Looked at Tristan. Finally, she broke her gaze and continued walking, as if nothing had happened. She couldn't tell him why. She couldn't tell him how she waited for her family, how they'd simply disappeared one day, along with her house. That's why she couldn't go back, they said. The people at the orphanage had told her so. They said her parents had taken her brother and sister on a trip. They were gone for now, but they would come back some day. So, she watched and waited. Waited and watched. The moment they came walking down that street, she'd run into their arms, and they would be a happy, normal family again.
Eventually, Rai would realize that it had all been a lie. Her parents, her brother and sister - they were all gone forever, and they were never coming back. Never. They were dead.
The dead don't come back.
It happened to every orphan at some point. The moment where they realized that the nuns who ran the orphanage were liars too, that even the nicest ones made up things in order to shield them. Shield them from what? The world? One day, those little children would grow, and they would have to live in the world and face all of its horrors. One day, Rai and all the others would come to find that people lied to each other's faces without blinking. That people were made of paper words that crumbled easily inside your hands.
When that day came, Rai would stop going to the street corner. The crack of doubt that had been growing in that golden place in her heart would finally stretch too far, and the crystal dream of a perfect, happy reunion would break, shatter to a million pieces. It would leave a small hole in that part of her, and slowly, gradually, the dry winds of reality would blow in and dessicate all that she had left, hardening her into the person she would some day become.
For now, though, she was small and naive and full of hidden hopes.
"Why did you stay." The little girl's voice was so soft and toneless, it sounded more like a statement rather than a question.
"Hm?" asked Tristan, surprised that she had spoken again. "What do you mean?"
"Why did you sit with me, I mean. On the street corner." Their shadows stretched long across the ground as the sun continued its descent, changing the sky into a living blossom of colors. "Why did you stay."
Tristan looked at her and shrugged. "I guess... I guess I was scared. I'm new, so I don't really know any of the other kids yet."
She glanced at him, surprised that he had admitted such a thing. Rai looked straight ahead as she walked. "The other kids say you can't be scared here. They said you'll get hurt if you let yourself be scared."
"That doesn't mean they're not, though. It just means they don't want to say it," said Tristan, looking to the path ahead. "Being brave sometimes means admitting you're scared. That's what my father told me," he added in a quieter voice.
For awhile, only the padding of their feet in the dust was heard. "I'm scared too sometimes," said Rai in a low voice, amazed that she could admit it.
"It's okay," said Tristan, and his voice was so reassuring that Rai raised her eyes from her feet and looked up at him in surprise. "I'm right here, and you can always count on me. I'll get you home." Tristan came to a stop in the middle of the street, his shadow a long line that stretched away forever. "Okay?" He smiled. Rai blinked at him, because he was holding his hand out in the air between them, palm up, offering it to her.
Deep violet crept slowly into the sky overhead, but the western half of the atmosphere remained a deep reddish orange near the horizon. Intense like the scraggly hair on the girl's head, bright like the fires that had consumed her family. She would learn to face it some day, but for now, they took the path to the south, where the warehouse waited to welcome them. The place she would some day learn to call "home."
Across the cracked earth, two shadows stepped together, merged into a single line.
She took his hand, and they walked.
* * *
"s**t."
Rai sat up panting, sweat beading on her forehead. Utter blackness enclosed her, and for a moment she panicked despite herself. Then she noticed that small lights pierced the darkness here and there, saw shapes - people - moving around her. She remembered where she was.
It was just a dream, then. But it had felt so real... In her dreams, she'd been running from the burning city on Smoke, the one she barely escaped from so many years ago. But in her dream... the Nith had cornered her. She tried scaling a fence, but they pulled her back. She could see them grabbing at her as she tried to get away, feel their claws on her skin. Rai shuddered. Not just that. In her nightmare, everyone had been dead. All the orphans, all her friends. The Keepers of her team had been there, too - or, their bodies, at least. Even Hale... Rai cringed. Even Trist--
She stopped herself, wiped a hand across her forehead, dried her sweaty palms on her shirt. No time to be thinking about things like that.
As she'd learned, Rai took several deep breaths to calm herself. Once her heartbeat was back to normal, she focused on where she was and what she was supposed to be doing. In her mind, she began going over the events she last remembered.
I was fighting those Shadowsili... and then they escaped to the tower, so I followed... and... The tower. There'd been a huge blast of force, and she'd been flung back, and the world went black.
Rai's eyes widened. "Crap," she muttered. "Where's my ship?" People milled about the beach. What time was it, even? Rai had no clue; the sky was always dark, no matter what.
Grinding her teeth against the pain, Rai stumbled to a standing position. She put a hand to her head and sank back to her knees momentarily. The world was spinning around her, and the pain in her head increased to a loud thump. Her whole body felt sore, actually... she was lucky that nothing was broken, thoguh. Lucky to be alive, even.
For a few minutes, Rai wandered the shore aimlessly, trying the locate the person who knew about her MPV. On the way, she managed to find breakfast for herself, in the form of a few cold pancakes and beer. Someone informed her that it was early morning and that the Keepers would be soon gathering.
"That's just excellent," said Rai in a tone of mock-excitement, taking a sip of canned beer. It was room temperature, too. Not even cold. "I can't wait to help out the Keepers when I don't even have a friggin' weapon to fight with," said Rai bitterly. But at least there was beer. Even if they lost and the Nith took over the planet... she might still have time to get drunk before then, if she could find something a little stronger...
"Excuse me, sir." Rai turned around slowly, by now accustomed to being mistaken for a male, and faced a man who appeared to be from the village. "Are you the owner of that strange aircraft?"
The Vectiran man led Rai to her 147 model MPV, which was sitting among some bushes, still smoldering a little. She cringed. "I'm only a car mechanic, so I didn't know how to fix it completely," said the man, sounding apologetic, "but I did the best I could. A lot of the instruments, though, are..."
"Frankly, I'm amazed this thing isn't a pile of ash," said Rai dryly, interrupting the man. As she spoke, she circled her battered ship, inspecting damage. Already, her hands were itching to do some repairs. "Thanks a lot, old man." Without a word further, she jumped up and into the cockpit of her 147, spanner at the ready.
The man looked slightly taken aback at being called "old man," and thought to himself that he was more middle-aged, but he only frowned and walked away. Rai paid him no attention. It was time to do some fixin'.
. . .
Rai yawned and stretched her arms over her head, popping her shoulder in the process. Her body was still sore and her head ached, but she paid those feelings no mind. The nurse on the beach had given her some painkillers earlier, and Rai had taken several of them (probably what was considered an unhealthy dose, but like she cared). She reached for a beer can sitting ontop of her MPV and lifted it, taking a swig. She then tossed the emptied can down into a small pile collecting at her feet. Luckily, she had a high alcohol tolerance, or someone might warn her about operating machinery.
"Well, that's as good as you're gonna get, anyway," said Rai to herself, patting the machine in front of her. It clanked loudly in response, and she sucked air through her teeth and moved her hand away slowly. "I hope you at least last through the battle," she said, sounding doubtful. Then again, what fun was fighting if there wasn't some risk involved?
Rai clipped her wrench onto her toolbelt and wandered back towards the beach. She'd woken up much earlier than any of the other Keepers, apparently, so they'd been asleep for the few hours she'd worked on her ship, as far as she knew.
Looking around for any recognizeable Keeper, she spotted one at last. It was the girl from her team - Rai couldn't recall her name - and she was speaking with a man - Rai had no idea who. Great. Whatsername and Whatshisface. I love situations like this. To avoid the awkwardness that would inevitably come with such an encounter, Rai approached the nearest passerby and made them tell her all that they knew about the girl and man conversing. She was told about Captain Mattheis and reminded that the girl's name was Althalia. The man even gave her some extra information - he was a survivor from the Preposterous, apparently, and also liked to talk, especially about Mattheis Hiashin III.
"So many explosives and traps, Prince. Where's your honor gone to, hmm?"
"Bah, honor. If we're going to die, we're going to go out with a 'bang'. That's how my forefathers did it, that's how the Militia does it.
"And these Nith... are going to get a royal asskicking."
"I fully support this style of asskicking," said Rai, approaching the two. "The kind that has lots of fireworks," she grinned.
"Would either of you care to fill me in on what happened, by the way? I seem to have been out since yesterday evening. Shame I couldn't make it to your s'mores party, I heard it was an absolute blast." Rai glanced around casually. "And where's Hale? Shouldn't he be up by now?" Rai shook her head, "What a bum."

"Its not in your blood to be a friend."
"Can I fill your glass friend?" The words broke the silence of the dingy establishment in the poorer run down, comparatively, district of Raine for the mercenary sitting at the bar nursing his drained drink. For a few moments he was silent and it didn't seem like he was going to answer but just as the bartender sighed and turned his attention to another customer, Jack raised his head slightly glaring at the barkeep with his good eye through a veil of messy red hair, "I'm not... your friend. But yeah. You can." he replied in a none-the-too-friendly manner that caused the barkeep to flinch for a moment.
"Keep drinking the expensive stuff and I'll be whatever you want then." The middle aged barkeep replied as he tipped an unusually muscled arm, most likely as a result of having to stop countless bar brawls, to fill Jack's glass full of a fiery spirit that was probably worth as much as half of the establishment's other stock. "Thanks." The patron mumbled, slipping a few coins across the bar before returning to his drink, the bartender looked with worried concern at the man. He'd been here for nearly an hour now, in a suicidally depressing stupor and suicidally depressed didn't mix well with drunk, these types either ended up spluttering their life stories in a homicidal cheer or became psychotically murderous and suicidally. Neither of which sounded like a good idea to him, from personal experience, the barkeep knew that neither was good for the establishment.
But he was making him a lot of money and he was sure as well wasn't going to be the one to tell such a dangerous looking type to leave, he was almost guaranteed to be armed and from his ancestral knowledge, he knew that you didn't disturb quiet, angry and armed types from their drink. They might just decide that if you were dead, you wouldn't be able to disturb them and while impressive, Raine's law enforcement wasn't exactly used to dealing with ruffians due to the nature of the world's and city's people. Thus, everyone else in the bar left Jack be.
--
Jack looked blearily to the clock, it'd been a few hours now since... since... then. Just thinking about it... those men, what he had said and... the look of total trust on her face made him sick. Why damn it!? Why the hell couldn't you just fight? Run!? ANYTHING! You just... you... The glass shook in his hand as he set it down shakily, breathing heavily, right... it wasn't his fault it was... ... My fault. She trusted me... she... handed herself over... and... look what happened. A grim smirk appeared on his face... so it was true, you couldn't depend on Sanguine blood, he couldn't break the family mold.
Even if he didn't hand her over, then what? Then he'd still be running, running for the rest of his life from... from that god damn Mr. Blank and his company, he should have felt good; this spirit should have felt like heaven but instead in his guilty mouth it tasted like piss; his drunk stupor did nothing to raise his spirits if it didn't lower them. Pathetic.
"Mr. Sanguine?"
Jack raised his head but he didn't turn around, the voice was professional and well oiled; a trained killer was his first though and sober was well so he wasn't in this establishment to drink. He noticed the barkeeper cringe and fall back slightly and the unsettling silence that fell over the bar and it's usual patrons, never a good thing. "... Whose asking?" There was a pause, the man was considering his words carefully, obviously they didn't want to make a public scene. "An associate of one of his... friends. He performed admirably and we want to offer him another opportunity to prove his mettle... Mr. Sanguine" Jack's eyes narrowed, so they had captured them then, somewhere in the back of his mind he had vainly hoped that Neera and Shino had managed to escape... no such luck, he felt yet another pang of guilt as he realized they must know of his betrayal by now.
"Then yeah. Mr. Sanguine it is. Though I guess you already knew that." Jack turned for the first time, three of them out of the suited men from before, a young blond man who Jack recognized as being their leader stood in front, he reminded him of himself... before all this crap. And without another word being said between them, the three of them joined by the redhead left the establishment after respectfully allowing Jack to finish his drink and pay the barkeep. After-all, there was a special place in the Lifestream reserved for mercenaries that wasted their drink and it wasn't meant to be a very nice one.
"So then. Where we headed chaps?" There wasn't an answer, this was beginning to feel like a execution walk, the men were casual but his instincts were going nuts... there was something up with them... they turned sharply and... s**t... An empty... He turned around, one of them had slipped behind him while he was walking without him noticing dead end..., Jack cursed himself for being so careless... it was the bloody drink dragging his instincts down. He raised an eyebrow at all of them, "This job that your associates wanted me to do doesn't involve me floating upside down in a river does it?" The blond man grinned in a professional manner, "Look. I like you Sanguine, this is nothing personal and if you cooperate, you might make it out of this in one piece." Jack snorted.
"And you expect me... to cooperate." The men all grinned, Jack didn't like the looks on their faces, he was tempted to shout for help but he knew it would be useless, an organization this powerful wouldn't make such a stupid mistake. "No. Not really, that's why we brought these." The voice came from behind, Move! Jack primed his legs attempting to roll out of the way from danger he felt coming in from behind him but a second too late; a blunt object crashed into his shoulder causing a sharp spike of pain but an instant later discharging a pulse of electricity through his body causing him to cry out involuntarily as he lost control of his muscles and sank to the floor shaking uncontrollably as his senses were overwhelmed by the pain.
"ARGH! Damn... it..." Jack seemed to submit to his attackers, crumbling to the ground in agony from the assault but his mind raced to try and find a purpose behind this... why would they risk alienating him? But... if they wanted to kill him... No, if they wanted him dead, he'd be a goner already. So they want me alive... but why? A hand grabbed him roughly by the collar dragging him to a standing position, "Hurts doesn't it? I don't like using this on people, especially you, so please. Cooperate and everything will be dandy." Jack grinned, "You seem to know so much about me. Well." The grin widened, disturbed by this, the blond man grabbing him quickly swung the electric baton-like weapon he was carrying again but before it connected; the mercenary had disappeared in a flash of red smoke.
"You should know that it won't be that easy." Jack stood behind all three of them now at the entrance to the alleyway, breathing heavily, he tried to maintain a facade of confidence but inside he was rattled. s**t... there was something in that stick... can't... Two of them ran forwards bearing their batons, the mercenary leaned back, dodging the first swing and counter with a uppercut that sent the man stumbling backwards with a bloody nose but before he as he mustered his aura to try and teleport; the other's baton struck him in the rib discharging another wave of overwhelming agony through his body.
Before another blow connected, the mercenary managed to teleport again, this time appearing on the rooftop of one of the buildings surrounding the alleyway, breathing heavily and stumbling back and forth. Jack fell against a chimney trying to support himself as his vision became blurred and his mind felt light headed, he hadn't recovered from his encounter from Shino yet but these guys... speaking of which... He looked down and was alarmed to see that they had vanished from the alleyway.
"Where are the famed battle instincts of the Sanguine family!?" Impossible... the voice had come from... Jack looked up, Above! leaping off to the side and rolling against the hard surface of the rooftop Jack barely managed to avoid a strike from the baton of one of the suited men who was... flying? Jack shook his head with a grin despite his situation which had just become a lot worse, "For just a goon to be equipped with that kind of stuff? Jeez. Blank's associates really are rich." While to the naked eye, it looked like the three suited men were simply floating in the air, upon concentrating; one would notice small flares of different colors being projected at their feet... aura propelled personal flight equipment... he was pretty screwed.
"That isn't all either." Jack raised an eyebrow in mock relief as he gathered himself, backing away from his three floating aggressors as they advanced on him in a triangle, "Wonderful. What else? You aren't equipped with personal aura cannons and Keeper shielding technology are you?" He hoped they weren't, he'd go from screwed to a stain on the ground if they were. "Luckily for you no, but this should be more than enough." He didn't exactly like the sound of that, there was a harsh buzzing noise as the baton was raised at him by the blond leader, blue aura energy sparked like electricity at it's tip, Jack had a feeling it was going to hurt if he didn't get the hell out of the way.
With a flash of red smoke, the mercenary disappeared again, blue aura arcing forward and striking the place where he was moments ago, Jack appeared at the edge of the rooftop away from the the three men, wobbling slightly as he quickly weighed his options in his mind. In his current condition and with the weaponry that these men possessed along with the fact that they would probably have reinforcements meant that he couldn't fight them off despite how much he wanted to take his anger out on someone right now. Then the only option is... "So. Are you going to cooperate Mr. Sanguine?" Jack grinned and shook his head, "Sorry buddy but I'm going to be uncooperative and make a run for it." His pursuer didn't really look surprised, the three men simply raised their batons, charging the blue aura attack again.
Again, as he flashed and limped across the rooftops of Adamitte and stumbled through it's alleyways, Jack Sanguine was running. Running from his enemies, running from confrontation, running because he was scared.

CAN YOU SEE WHAT I SEE

.......I have nothing to say to you.... No words left that sound true...
Lies lies lies, he speaks lies. But the blood, it stains the sand, that pure white, so soft sand... Perhaps he speaks not lies. There are so many truths here, so many dark and painful truths. Bring out your dead, the man of pain and shadows says. Bring out your dead, and into this cart here, ladies and gentleman, I'll show you a trick. Another trick, I'm full of tricks. But not the kind that can make a still heart beat, or a twice-dead man live for a third time. Or rather a twice dead girl. Almost dead once, in any case... But now dead. Dead for good. Nothing to be done. Oh my sweet love, my love, my dear Liebe...Love can't die. But you're gone, you're gone, I know. You're stiller than still, and there is nothing I can say or do to bring you back. Your daddy is here too, your real daddy....Cursed Shift b*****d clone that he is. But I was your father when he was gone, oh Liebe, oh lovely... Your hair is so soft, and your skin...It's cold, but it's always been cold since I got to you. Since I got to you, it's all been hell. I wanted to save you...But you wanted to escape, just like me, once upon a dream... Perhaps I should have left you....I love you, I love you, I love you, Liebe...
Another world waits under the stairs.... Beyond of the lies you tell in your prayers...
He can't have you, the man of pain and shadows. You can't go on that cart, you're mine, you're mine, I love you, please come back...They say you're in the lifestream, that you've just gone to another place, but I know the truth. I'll travel to the ends of the world, the worlds, just to find you....But I won't, I know I won't.
Can you see what I see? Can you hear what I hear?
No, you can't see. Can't hear, not in that dark place. Deep, deep, deep under the sand, your blood already poured down my throat. Preserve you, whatever I can. I love you. Can't hear, can't see. They speak, they speak, but what do they say? I don't know. Can't see what's in front of me, only hold what I have been given. Food. I don't need food, I have you. Had you. Gotta look forward, gotta see the future....I hear the plans, but I can't process them. Voices from the dark...They whisper to me, they call to mee, they laugh, they jeer. These are my friends....my friends now. Shhh, shhh, they say. Liebe. Love. There's no love, you know there's no love. It's gone. It's dead. Only us now. Only us. Shhh, shhh, they say. Listen to us.
Visions of destruction, the sound of fear... The source of my evil is inside of you dear...
Voices, the voices still speak. Hissing, cooing, velvety, rough. They speak in the dark, even when everyone's asleep. You're still on my mind, but fainter, fainter. The prospect of tomorrow grows ever more brilliant in my thoughts. Bloodbloodblood, blood red on the soft white sand. Screams, screams, and not those of you. Screams of pain, screams of madness. It grows, it grows. Thin little tendrils creeping under my skin, it grows. The voices are pleased. A melody, a glorious sound of their words, lulling me to sleep with whispers of promises for tomorrow. I shall taste blood, I shall drip blood, I shall bathe in blood, and it will be beautiful. Burn, burn...I want to see it all burn, I want to burn it all down. Go away goaway goawaygoaway....Voices, go away. This is not how I am. This is not how I want to be.
Cutting yourself to pass the time.... Pretending that the monsters are all in your mind....
I wish I could pretend they were just in my head...but the moster is me, me, me. I can't escape me, no matter how I wish I would. The voices promise a good day today. A dark sleep a deep sleep a dreamless sleep last night. They gave me peace. But they come back with their whispers and lies and truths and howls. Skin, skin, pure white, smooth, unbroken skin that has had a blade go over it many times in the past few hours. Deep enough, deep enough to hurt even though its healed over several times already. Taking longer and longer. Still the voices stay, gibbering. Go away goaway goawaygoaway.... They won't go away. This is not how I am. This is not how I want to be. This is how I am. This is not how I want to be. This is what I want. They say, they say, they whisper, they whisper, words like acid snakes across their invisible lips. Revenge, revenge, for the death of love. A monster in return for Liebe.
No method to control your fear.... Why should you hide when I'm already here.... No escape, no escape...
No escape. Can't escape. Can't escape from myself, can't escape from the monster. Can't escape from the truth, can't hide from the truth that you're gone. They can't escape. They won't escape, can't hide, won't hide...
No escape.
It's not just your precious sound that I'll take...
Not take....take in. Take in your sound, the sight of you, the very essence of you.... Liebe gone, nothing left nothing left... Naught but you. Not love, to be sure. But honor, respect, for the non-king, the captain. You're breaking, I can tell. Breaking, but a wound always heals over, if not good as new, perhaps sometimes better than before. Thicker skin, senseless skin. Descend, I'll descend, but you'll remain above me, in my sights, under my protection. No one will climb the pillar to bring you down, I'll not allow them to touch you, to hurt you. At least... as best I can. Scream, cry, mourn, grieve, see their dying faces as I know you do.... it's your passion and your heart that keeps you from becoming one of them, the soulless... Mattheis. Captain. Prince. King. I'll watch over you, whether it be standing guard over your tent or ripping apart those in battle that would wish to take advantage of your turned back. I am yours. You are my master.

[K]aito [A]zure
[海翔 アズレ]
Keeper Team 9-AC - Vectiras, Keeper Camp
Lost in the darkness,
Silence surrounds you.
Once there was morning,
Now endless night.
Silence surrounds you.
Once there was morning,
Now endless night.
Kaito had a darkening sensation as he fell from the sky, his body no longer able to hold itself up. He had depleted his aura and his body now focused on making more shutting down many of his own body functions save for the few ones that kept him living. Down down he fell, his body limp and unwilling to move. Not much did Kaito remember past that, but if he did he would have known that to his luck Jace had caught him keeping him from hitting the ground on high impact. After having caused them both to tumble a villager had been asked to take care of Kaito in one of the nearby tents set up for battle relief, the villager was happy to do so as well. Leaving the others Kaito had been sent to rest and hopefully recuperate enough by the time the true fight was about to begin.
---------
Bright eyes opened up to view the world once more after having been closed for a good few hours of rest. The world around him seemed surprisingly bright despite Kaito having been in a tent all this time. Yawning the blue haired angel child slowly began to sit up, the warm covers of the bed falling off his shoulders to build up around his waist as Kaito began to get up. A voice called out to him as a nice young lady walked into his tent, seeming relieved to see Kaito up and moving again. It was one of the villagers who had volunteered to look after him until he woke up.
"I'm glad to see you're doing better young keeper. Honestly I'm a bit surprised, I thought you might be out a bit longer. The others had already scattered around the camp but I don't think they'll start any fighting anytime soon, not after having just fought the Nith off anyway," The lovely lady explained moving over to check his temperature and make sure he was really alright much like a mother might do.
Kaito smiled gently, not at all bothered by her touch. It was nice actually, after all it felt like someone actually cared about him. "Did you look after me all this time? Thank you, I feel much better after having rested," Kaito replied. It took him a while to convince her he truly was just fine, but after a while she gave in and let him be on his way once more.
---------
Kaito gave once last yawn to chase away his sleepiness as he exited the tent he had been resting in. Sukai had latched herself onto the little angel's shoulder once more, her entire being much more fuller and alive then it had been before. Kaito's wings had also returned to their normal dark blue hue which had surprised one of the villagers that had tended to the boy during his rest. After all he had come in with white wings only to leave with deep blue ones. Anyone would have probably been confused by it. Not only that, but Sukai, who had disappeared after Kaito's safety had been insured in order to preserve his aura, had reappeared later once Kaito recovered the aura he lost adding another scare to the poor woman assigned to watch him.
Despite it all though Kaito was now feeling better then ever. A great smile was pasted on his face as he exited the tent feeling as refreshed as when he had first initially set out with everyone at the very beginning. The thought of the very people he now deemed family made him wonder what they were doing right about now. Sukai couldn't tell him, she just said she had fallen asleep as well so she wasn't much help. After going around some bit however he did manage to find out that most of everyone was currently at one of the campfires set out in the Keeper's camp. Now knowing the general location Kaito set forth to join them.
Kaito's grin widened as he found himself staring at the flickering flames of a campfire in the distance. It would only be a little longer now until he could get back to his 'family'. Kaito's little feet began to pitter patter a little more quickly, that is until something much closer caught his eye. Slowing to a stop Kaito had to do a double take before finding himself staring at some sort of small body hiding in the bushes, a fox tail twitching ever so slightly now and then, and a small monkey staring straight at him. Well...now this was a curious sight.
Titling his head cutely he moved a closer, the wings on his back shifted slightly in the process as he came up beside Mei squatting down next to her to look at what she was so interested in. "What'cha looking at?" Kaito asked as he eyed the camp from Mei's location.
"Eep!" Mei gasped and jumped a little, surprised by the sudden appearance of the boy beside her. She'd been too intent on watching the group ahead, and too distracted with Buki-Ya's chittering, to notice the sound of approaching footsteps. Buki scrambled behind Mei hurriedly and looked out from behind her, chirping quietly. "I... I was just..."
Kaito blinked now staring at Mei with interest, He hadn't meant to startle them, he was just wondering what she was up to. He had to admit though, it was kinda funny. Kaito giggled cutely giving Mei a big smile. "You're silly!"
Mei's ears twitched a little, and despite herself, a tiny blush crept onto her face. Then she forgot her embarrassment as her eyes widened a little and she realized who this boy was. "Oh, wait a sec... you're that boy from earlier, the one who fell out of the sky!" whispered Mei, keeping her voice down. Her mouth remained open for a few more seconds as she observed his bright blue wings and blue hair. She glanced at the beautiful bird perched on his shoulder, the one who had warned Mei and Jace of the falling angel before. She was no normal bird, to be sure...
Kaito blinked, taken slightly aback by Mei's words about having fell out of the sky. Oh...did she know him? Kaito didn't really recollect much of anything from that time. "Ah...yeah I suppose that was me. I was battling the Nithlings and got lost. I remember I was heading back to everyone but I got really tired and fell asleep..." Kaito muttered softly blushing lightly in embarrassment. "Sukai's always telling me I need to work more on my level two so I don't run out of energy so fast...it's still fairly new to me though," Kaito added. Sukai gave a small chirp as if in agreement but other then that seemed to stay out of the conversation.
Mei blinked, a realization dawning on her. Battling Nithlings...? So... he must be... A Keeper? She squinted at him suspiciously for a moment. Then she realized that if he was a Keeper, he might tell the others. "U-uhm, please don't tell them I'm here!!" said Mei suddenly, ducking a little lower into the bushes and flattening her ears as a light blush burned across her cheeks. If she got caught, it was all over. "I'm not supposed to be, but I couldn't sleep..." She looked down guiltily, fidgeting a bit with her hands.
Kaito looked over to the campfire, then back to Mei. He didn't fully understand it all but he nodded lightly. "Umm...okay but don't you want to go join the others too? They look like they're having a lot of fun..." Kaito stated looking over there slightly longingly himself. A sudden thought struck him making him grin widely. "I know! Why don't you come with me?! If anyone asks I'll tell them I invited you to play!" Kaito grinned hoping his little plan would at least cheer her up a bit. It wouldn't exactly be a lie either, Kaito actually did want to play, especially since he normally only got to play with the adults. Kaito never really have any playmates around his age even back at the academy. It would be a nice change for him.
For a moment, Mei brightened, and she smiled back at the strange blue-haired, blue-winged boy, eyes sparkling and tail swinging behind her. "Ah...!" The idea seemed great at first. Until she thought about it.
Mei looked down again, the smile slowly fading from her face. "But Joshua told me I couldn't come back to the camp, or it'll distract Jace..." She looked towards the campfire where the circle of Keepers sat and talked, a somewhat dismayed look in her eyes. She sighed. Mei didn't mind breaking the rules, but she didn't want to get Jace in trouble... and Joshua had told her that it would be best for Jace if she stayed out of the way for now. That was enough to convince her. "Those marshmallows sure do smell good though, huh...?" Mei sniffed the air with her sensitive nose and closed her eyes briefly in pleasure at the scent.
Kaito's own excitement died down after hearing Mei say that Joshua had specifically told her not to distract Jace...whom he assumed was the boy she had stared at near the campfire. "Ah...well if Joshua said so..." Kaito sighed giving up hope on his plan actually succeeding. It made sense, everyone was about to go into battle after all. Still to me told not to see someone you care about just before battle...that was kinda mean, at least it was in Kaito's eyes. Mei was in a tricky situation.
Kaito gave another sigh wondering what they were going to do now. When Mei mentioned the marshmallows he blinked looking back at the campfire before taking a big sniff of the air. They sure did smell delicious...
Kaito let the scent linger in himself for a bit before nodding softly. "Those are called marshmallows then? They really do smell good...should I go get some for us? I need to check in real quick anyway I can grab a few and we can both go out and play. I haven't really gotten to play much lately..." Kaito added sadly thinking about how quickly they had gotten themselves into the mess just hours after taking off from the academy.
Mei blinked in surprise at Kaito's reaction, eyes wide. "You... You've never had marshmallows before?!" She couldn't believe her ears. Where could he be from that they don't have marshmallows?!
Kaito couldn't help but be startled slightly by Mei's reaction. Was it that weird not to have had these marshmallows before? "Not that I know of...I did have a cupcake before though! It was tasty!" Kaito stated with a grin trying not to focus too much on his never having had a marshmallow before.
Mei smiled briefly, bemused at how proud he was about having eaten a cupcake. Has he never had cupcakes before, either? She then thought back to what Kaito had been saying before about playing. "Play..." Mei repeated the word softly. For a moment, the idea seemed to brighten her. Then she looked down, ears drooping slightly. The image of her father came to her mind, and she was filled with a heaviness that no amount of play could dispel at the moment. Yanmei loved to play, but not even she could play after all that had happened today. So many people had lost their lives... and her father had almost... well, he might still...
The little fox-girl shook her head side-to-side quickly, dispelling the awful thought. "I don't know if I can play right now... I don't... feel so good." She glanced to the side. "But... marshmallows would be nice!" she added with a smile, some of her usual self returning.
Kaito noticed the slight darkening of his new friend's mood. He couldn't help but wonder what was on her mind, it seemed to be something big. "Are you okay? We don't have to play if you don't want too," Kaito stated gently slightly worried for his friend. "Do you feel sick? If you want I can help with that, I'm good at making people feel better...I'm still not too good with big injuries though," Kaito added.
Yanmei blinked up at the blue-haired boy. "No, I'm not sick..." she shook her head and smiled gently. She had no idea what he meant about "making people feel better"... did he mean he was good at making people smile? How could he make someone un-sick? Yanmei tilted her head a little to the side. What a strange boy he was! Mei smiled. She liked him, though.
"By the way, what's your name?" asked Yanmei suddenly, realizing that she'd failed to introduce herself. "I'm Mei! And this is Buki-Ya," she added, turning to look to her shoulder where Buki-Ya... should have been. Mei blinked, surprised, and looked around quickly. She spotted the little marmoset sitting in the shadows next to Kaito, carefully inspecting his blue wing feathers. "Buki!" scolded Mei. The little monkey chittered and scampered back to her shoulder. "Sorry, he's just curious..." She smiled apologetically and patted the little monkey's head.
When Mei finally introduced herself Kaito realized that he to had forgotten to introduce himself. Looking at Mei he memorized her name as well as the one she had given to...her shoulder? What and odd thing to do...wait she wasn't referring to her shoulder then? Kaito blinked following her gaze until it met the little monkey he had seen with her earlier. Oh so this must be the one she meant to call Buki-Ya. Well, now that made more sense. Kaito giggled slightly shuffling his feathers a bit playfully before Buki went back to Mei. He shook his head lightly at Mei's apology. "It's okay, I don't mind. I'm Kaito, and this is Sukai," Kaito replied nudging Sukai gently. Sukai eyed the two for a moment before spreading her wings a bit and the nodded her head as if curtsying before settling herself once again.
"Nice to meet you Kaito," smiled Mei, her heart feeling lighter by Kaito's cheerful nature. "And you too, Sukai!" said Mei politely, amazed by the bird's manner of introduction. "What beautiful feathers you have," she added, her mouth a small 'o' as she stared up at Sukai for a moment. There was something intimidating in the bird's manner that not even Yanmei couldn't ignore. She just seemed so... wise.
Sukai turned her head staring at Mei as if comprehending what she had said. Puffing out her chest slightly she gave off the impression of being conceited a bit. "I like this girl Kaito, she has my approval," Sukai chirped happily. Kaito giggled though Mei probably wouldn't have understood them since Sukai had returned to speaking in a way only Kaito could hear. "Sukai seems to really like you...she always likes it when people compliment her," Kaito grinned. "Now how about those marshmallows..." Kaito trailed off debating with himself how to go obtain the delectable treats for the both of them...

I'm tired of running away.
It's finally time to stand and fight.

The Rogue
Shino Ishida - The Lifestream and Adamitte
"Nobody crosses Shino Ishida and lives, I'll make damn sure of that..."
Shino was somewhat thrown off when the girl when she acted nochalantly in response to his threats, though not enough to stop his smile as he met her gaze when she took a seat against the back wall, noting that she still held the gun tightly on her lap. For such a frail looking girl she acted rather tough and powerful, though no matter how well an act she put on, he would not hesitate to kill her when he got the chance, she would pay for what she did. While it may have seemed to most that the rogue was completely helpless, he had escaped from more prison and captors than he could remember, he had a certain knack for escaping when people wanted him dead.
As effective as the handcuffs were at restricting the aura that would have allowed him to break through the things with ease, they weren't as foolproof as the design made them seem, anyone with enough sense to think ahead could arm themselves with the tools to escape given enough time and skill. With almost microspoic movements Shino began to remove a small pin embedded in his palm for such occassions, sliding the pin out of its hiding place under his skin. As he removed the last of the pin he turned his hand to catch the thing before it could hit the ground, barely missing his only hope for escape at this point he restrained himself from letting out a sigh of relief when the pin landed in his hands. Damn it, I have to be more careful. That was way too close...
With no visable movement to the human eye he began to slide the pin into a slot on the cuffs where the key would have normally been inserted, quickly pulling it back and clasping it in his hands when Jack walked back in. "Glad you didn't get out of that without a bruise, you roughed me up pretty badly back there..." Shino rolled his eyes as he turned to meet Jack's eyes, throwing on about the fakest smile he'd ever formed in his life. "Oh, so glad I didn't disappoint you Mr. Merc. Now how about you undo these cuffs so I can continue where we left off before we were so rudely interupted..." He glanced over towards Neera as his smile faded into a scowl, knowing that Jack would simply continue to ignore him as the mercinary adressed the Shadowsili. He could only watch as he gave the girl an apple in exchange for one of the Hellfire pistols, she was defenseless now, but she would be safe until Shino finally freed himself from the damned cuffs.
When Jack finally left he resumed his work, slowly but surely adjusting the pin by hand to essentially create a lockpick of sorts, though the process was very time consuming without his technopathy to allow him to see the design of the lock. He began to feel a little presured when he felt the worldship begin to enter the atmosphere, temporarily halting his progress to ensure the pin did not snap off inside the cuffs, Shino carefully hiding the pin behind his back as Jack returned to speak to them. "Morning sunshines. We're stopping off here for a bit, I'm going to go pick up some food and supplies, just stay here and I'll be right back." The rogue simply grunted in response, he was in no mood to deal with this a*****e again, but with him leaving them alone that would mean Neera would be almost completely helpless. Things were falling into place after all.
"Going to trust you to keep him down for me again while I'm gone... just sit tight okay?" Shino hid his grin as Neera was handed the Hellfire pistol once again, knowing it would be useless to her once he slipped out of the cuffs, which wouldn't be much longer at the rate he was moving. "Look I'm... for leaving you... again... Sorry." The smile faded as he turned to get a look at the mercinary's face, something was deffinitely fishy about the way he was acting. For a moment his eyes widened with a realization of what was going on, Jack was planning on leaving him for the men to pick up, returning them to normal almost instantly to prevent Neera and Jack from noticing the sudden change in his facial expressions. That spineless coward couldn't even bother to deliver me himself, what a p***k!"Well I'm off. Take care of yourselves."
With increased haste, Shino continued working at the lock and while his movements were sligtly notable now, he doubted that Neera would notice or even make a guess at what he was attempting to do. For several minutes he kept this up until he heard the faint click of the lock opening, releasing his hands from their grip. He waited for a moment though, even without the cuffs it might take him a moment to regain his aura abilities, and that gun could do serious damage before he got control back. Tightening the cuffs enough that he could easily slip out if required, he sat there watching in a slight aggrivation as she taunted him with another large bite of her apple, meeting her gaze with a gaze that could cut through stone. His stare was only broken by the sound of footsteps outside the Firehawk, he knew what would come next, but it was too late for him to escape now. Damn, these guys sure do move quick. Before he could even slip his hands out of the cuffs, several men in black suits were inside, and Neera was aiming the Hellfire Pistol at them. He almost wanted to see what would happen if she actually pulled the trigger, but she never got the chance and she was on the ground in fear as the gunshots rang out.
Shino bided his time until the Shadowsili girl was drawn out into the cabin, lessening the number of men he'd have to deal with. Three men began to approach him, seeing that he was already cuffed they figure he wouldn't be much of a threat, but they couldn't have been more wrong. As one of the men approached him to check if the cuffs were secure the rogue thrusted his body upright, smashing the top of his head into the man's jaw and forcing him to bite deep into his own tounge. As the man stumbled around spitting the blood out of his mouth to keep from drowning in it, Shino swept his legs out from under him, following his head with the heel of his boot to knock the man unconcious on impact. He attempted to slip his hand loose to better combat the men, but he faltered for too long and was struck in the back of his head with something heavy. The impact combined with his weakened skull caused him to wobble for a few seconds before he fell unconcious once again, landing in the arms of one of the men as he was dragged out of the ship.
Shino woke up some time later, his breathing becoming rapid in shock of awaking in a new place, he definitely wasn't on the Firehawk anymore. Son of a b***h... Twice in the same day, really? He was kneeling when he woke up, his head felt like it had just been crushed, and he was being restrained by several men to prevent any further outbreaks of violence. The man who had been injured by his attack meerly glared him, but the man knew better than to take his vengeance now, he would wait until everybody else was gone before he beat the living s**t out of the rogue. Shino took a minute took to look around and try to figure out where he was, surprised to find Neera right next to him, pausing for a few moments while it all fell into place. Mr. Merc, you backstabbing son of a b***h, I can't believe you'd sell her out too. Oh, I can't wait 'til the next time I see you, I'll make you pay so much for all of this.
He laughed at her as a smile built up on his face, but for some reason he began to feel something of regret and sorrow as he saw the all too familiar feelings that were practically plastered onto her face. Shino knew that feeling, wondering why everone was always trying to kill him, why they were always being punished simply for their appearance, why they were always so hateful... He almost began to hate himself for not realizing it before, he could of helped her before this happened. She could have been safe, free from these men. Without a doubt, he knew Neer would not survive neerly as well as him in this kind of place, because despite all of her acts and faces she puts on, she was just a scared little girl a heart. He couldn't help himself, the words just began to form in his throat and all he could do was push them out to prevent from choking on them. "I'm sorry Neera. About those things before, I wouldn't have said them if I'd known that... Why am I even bothering, you probably don't care anyway..."
He felt a harsh blow to his ribs, as one of the soldiers planted his boot into the rogue's chest, another pulling him upright as another man approached. "Yes... Yes, these are the ones. Good." This did not bode well for either of them.
It's finally time to stand and fight.

[ OOC: This post may take a while to fully write out, but basically. Shino, Jack and Neera are tired of running; its time for their crowning moments of badass : O, I wasn't fully planning on this but this will be fun. Jack is gonna make Blank and Co sorry that they ever contracted him xD. And I finally get to use Crimson Cannon/Aura Cannon again x.x, my god, I've waited so long for this, though it isn't as godly as it was back then, it'll get there. Its too bad backup isn't here ;.; ]
Splash. Splash. Splash.
Jack stopped, doubling over to catch his breath, his clothes were now drenched in sweat and grungy city water but at least he was alive. For now. He felt his vision wobble as he tried to stand straight, his feet finding difficultly finding proper purchase in the slippery channels of the city's sewers. They had people above ground but down here, they couldn't use that aura technology of theirs effectively and... well. It seemed like he had lost them for now.
"Damn it..." He'd gotten away, then what? The mercenary took out the cashed up credits card he had been given by the company, they had probably put a trace on the money so if he used it even to buy some gum, they'd be on his a** in an instant... talk about ill rewards. Looking around, Jack groaned and grasped his arm; he had jarred it against a wall escaping a blast from those shock rods possessed by the goons after him; his legs felt numb, he was breathing hard with a dry throat and his entire body felt like lead... if they found him again...
I won't even be able to run.
Slumping against the slimy wall, too tired to notice the stench of the sewerage, Jack eyed the roof of the structure dispassionately; was this it then? If they found him again, he'd die like a cornered rat. "Damn it... damn it... DAMN IT!" Pounding the wall in frustration, the mercenary didn't even flinch as the slippery surface tore open his knuckles and hand, adding just another wound to the plethora he already possessed... he didn't care... what was the point of having a hand... a body like his... a body of the legendary Sanguine family when all he could do in the end was... run.
"Looks like this is the end of the line Mr. Sanguine."
s**t... Without even turning to the direction of the voice, Jack jolted himself into action attempting to flee but before he could; a paralyzing blast of agony raced through his body as an arc of the electric aura weapon caught him on the leg causing him to fall forwards as his body shut itself down out of sheer pain. Raggedly breathing, he attempted to crawl away, his arms twitching and almost unable to obey his mind's command to move just a mere finger let alone his body despite his inner voice screaming for him to run. "I've seen people determined to fight, people determined to protect... all that kind of stuff you expect from Keepers but you... you Mr. Sanguine."
Jack tried to stand, his will to survive overriding the pain racing through his body, the red head managed to struggle to one knee before his body gave way causing him to buckle over and fall head against the slimy, wet pavings of the sewerage culvert, his eyes and mouth lolled out as he stopped struggling unable to go any further... this was it... this was the limit of the Sanguine family was it? A power only good for running away, a power that wasn't even enough for that in the end. "You're pretty special. You know that? Most folks would have buckled and died a long time ago but no, you led us on a merry ride all across Raine. I guess you're really what they say you are... you live up to your reputation... of being the greatest coward that ever called himself a mercenary."
The floored redhead couldn't even hear his pursuer properly anymore let alone care about what he was saying, Jack's eyes fell on a rodent. A plump little black furred fellow, the rat was reared, hissing at the intruders of it's lair despite the obvious advantage in size that the humans had if they even noticed it at all... it hissed at Jack as well... it hadn't been there before... was it... his eyes fell on a small hollow in the sewer walls and inside were a few more rodents all smaller than the one in the open, chattering and hiding for protection. ... Even this rat has more guts than I do... ********. What a shitty way to go out... The last thoughts of the infamous Sanguine family... a rat has more balls than them. Jack grinned in a detached uncaring manner, at least he wouldn't be in pain anymore, he wondered though... why gave such a normally cowardly thing such guts? He tried to laugh but ended up coughing instead... maybe it could teach him a lesson or two.
"Well then." The rat hissed again and he met it's eyes as it hissed at him, he got it now. He was fighting because in the end, life is precious and for life; even a cornered rat will turn and fight... he was fighting because those other rodents were precious to it... and without them, life wasn't even worth living. Because... without... them... life... isn't... "Any last words... Mr. Sanguine?" Jack felt something tighten in his stomach... in his heart... surged a terrible energy. Flames... crying... a heart... I remember this feeling. I'm not ready to die yet... but if they die... then... then... Then darkness. He couldn't remember from where but... he knew this feeling.
| ♪ Crimson Cannon, First Impact ♪ |
"... Yeah. Don't call me that." The three suited men landed from their hovering positions a short distance away from Jack, they lifted their weapons which all sparked with aura lightning as they prepared to execute the mercenary. "... Oh? Then what? Strange last words." The weapons were fired and... struck nothing but slippery sewerage paving leaving a char mark on their impact, "It's Jack." The men all whirled around with surprise, kneeling behind them with his smoky red aura visibly and literally blazing was the one and the only, Mr. Sanguine... No, the one and only Jack, Jack Sanguine. The mercenary gently laid something on the floor, it was the rodent, the frightened creature stared at the man who had saved it for a moment before a gentle shove sent it scampering back to it's nest and chattering family, the mercenary then stood and faced the men, the look on his face unnerved them despite his ragged and battered appearance.
"And they weren't last words." The aura flames swathing Jack focused around his hands, settling into two roaring flames covering his hands, the leader of the suited men smiled, "You had me worried for a second there... That was a spike in Aura power if I ever saw one... but you're going to try the same thing again? You know that doesn't work." There wasn't a reply, while unnerving the men raised their weapons which pulsed gently with blue aura; the batons were capable of absorbing aura based attacks to use as fuel for it's own electricity attacks, as a result; even when Jack had turned to fight during their pursuit; he was unable to cause any damage.
This time though, it was going to be different, reaching up with a blazing hand the mercenary touched the eyepatch across his left eye, the flame followed the eyepatch causing a flaming strip of aura to cross Jack's face in place of the eyepatch for a moment before it faded away to reveal an advanced looking lens with the style and shape of an eyepatch. The once hollow and empty eye underneath the lens was a softly burning aura flame. Aura charge complete. Firing sequence ready. With his other hand, with all his aura focusing around it, Jack pointed in a gun-shape at his enemies with a deadly professional calm on his face.
"... I've gotta say, thanks. Who knows what I might have done if you hadn't come and tried to kill me." The remainder of his aura which wasn't burning drifted to the side and began to form into a cannon floating at his side which glowed with a potent red aura, the men took involuntary steps backwards... he hadn't done this last time... then again he seemed... different from before. Firing sequence beginning, charging to... 11.4% power. "What exactly are your trying to do... Jack, you know aura based attacks won't work." Jack grinned in a manner that shook the last vestiges of confidence away from the men, "Well. Its like... uh.... ice cream, it looks gooey and cold but when you try it... Man does it taste great... anyway, you never know until you try, besides; I want to test out my new toy."
Firing sequence complete. Crimson Cannon is ready to fire.

"I'll see you round." The charging blasts fired, the smaller blast from Jack's hand spiraling around the massive beam fired by the cannon and forming a "drill" at the front of the beam as it raced across the sewer at the three men who were surrounded by a luminous blue shield of aura. The blast struck the barrier with tremendous force, tearing the pavement apart around the impact and causing part of the sewer floor to collapse downwards as it was crushed under the immense pressure, red light illuminated the sewers in a dazing explosion. The barrier didn't stand a chance, almost instantly it crumbled before the destructive power of the attack which almost instantly incinerated the men inside the barrier as it pierced their defense leaving nothing but crumbling bricks, ashes, debris and smoke. As the smoke cleared, a small rodent scampered from it's hiding place, it's nose twitched, it was safe again. Everyone, including the red head, was gone
Meters above ground standing on a rooftop overlooking the perfect city, Jack Sanguine gazed across Adamitte in a new light, with opened eyes for the second time in his life; he was turning to fight. His eyes fell upon the worldship tower where the massive cruiser, "The Enfintus" was docked; an ugly mar in the picturesque sunset of Raine, without taking his eyes off his goal, the mercenary unstopped a bottle of unlabeled alcohol and took a refreshing swig. Hey, he was starting a new life sure but he'd wean off his old habits like alcohol slowly, you couldn't rush these things, he'd quit. Someday.
But it looked like for today, he was going to need it.

Trill gladly followed Lucien around after their awkward reunion, the girl easily slipping back into her cheerful demeanour as they moved towards the alluring smell of food. Her stomach gurgled, echoing the Keeper's, and she grinned sheepishly, clutching her sides with a self-conscious gesture. It had been a long day for everyone, but the people of Vectiras were still so generous and kind that she couldn't help but offer her assistance in any means necessary, smiling brightly when a pleasant lady finally let her carry a basket of dinner rolls to the buffet-style table.
Dutifully she placed the basket on the increasingly food laden table, marvelling at Vectirian hospitality first hand before grabbing a plate for herself. Trill watched curiously after Lucien, picking what he picked and shyly eyeing everything else; unlike the stoic keeper, she decided to choose one of almost of everything, sometimes glancing at Lucien's plate and helping herself to another portion – stockpiling, just in case the Keeper would still be hungry from his sparse meal. Despite the distracting smells of their obviously delicious food, Trill managed to keep up a steady conversation with Lucien as they made their way towards where the Keepers sat around a camp fire, though it was awfully one-sided, but she figured he was probably somewhat paying attention underneath his mask.
Besides, she supposed not everyone could keep up such good spirits as she did. "And then he said, 'Well I couldn't very well entertain them both!' or something like that, but he said he did anyway." Silence. Trill frowned, wondering exactly what Karthis meant when he had told her the story. Just as casually, she changed topics, asking questions and then answering them herself when it seemed like no answer would come from Lucien.
Trill didn't find it odd even as they sat down to eat, enjoying the company of her silent friend of sorts as she nibbled on each tasty morsel. Her voice quieted so as to not disturb the others, her enthusiasm not faltering as she enjoyed her meal. "Surface food sure is different," she commented with a delighted smile, offering some from her plate to Lucien as she said so. Near them, the horned Keeper named Joshua sat roasting little white fluff-balls on Jace's claws, along with June, Telosia, and Captain Mattheis who held a burnt journal in his hands. They sure were a curious bunch gathered by the fire, and though she wanted very much so to pay attention to their conversation, as important sounding as it was, her gaze wandered to June's pint of beer and the cigarette smoke pushed out from her exasperated sigh.
Earlier, Trill had been refused beer by a man who said she was too young to be drinking that sort of thing. She had, of course, taken it as a fact and did not argue. Smokes, on the other hand, had never come up. Trill was sorely tempted to ask the female Keeper if they were any good, but thought otherwise after looking at her irritated expression. Looking elsewhere, her gaze settled on Telosia. Aside from her ample bosoms (something she couldn't get tired of noticing), she had shown her deadly efficiency on the battlefield.
"I wish I could be more like her..." She sighed, for once not questioning anything. Then I'd be less useless... right? Turning back to face Lucien, she was surprised to see his mask fade into wisps of black smoke, revealing a handsome if not solemn face. The first thing Trill wanted to exclaim was that he had a face[!], for she had once entertained the idea of him being a robot. It would have been just like her to befriend a mechanical being, after all.
"I'm guessing that you want to help us, or you wouldn't still be here. I just hope you know what you're getting yourself into.
"I can't blame you for your decision though, I would have done the same thing... Just try to be careful."
Trill smiled at Lucien's words, his concern warming her heart briefly. She wanted to assure him that she knew what she was getting into, that her decision was well thought out and backed by a sturdy list of reasons, but found herself lacking in the proper words. In reality, she really didn't know what she was getting herself into and what would come out of it. Perhaps all she could have done in the end would later be in vain. The decisions she didn't regret then would turn on her, surely, if she didn't have the faith to follow through.
"Thank you," she said quietly, her words sincere, "I'm sure I'll manage somehow. I've survived so far, haven't I?"
Trill watched as a faint smile formed across Lucien's features, complementing his rather handsome face, and she too turned to watch the rest of the group's antics.
"Idiots... every last one of them. Yet... I wouldn't rather give my life to protect anyone else."
She was sad to see the smile fade so quickly, but her own smile stayed strong, hoping that it conveyed her message across. It was probably a good thing that Lucien relaxed once in a while, and she didn't want to ruin it by saying something. The atmosphere by the camp fire was nice, and she childishly wished that it would stay that way forever, accepting a roasted marshmallow from Jace's claw as it was waved in front of her.
Savouring the fluffy 'cloud candy' as Mattheis called it, Trill enjoyed the fleeting peace and quiet before the storm.
–
"Please? Will you please get in the water?"
Trill huffed, glaring at the pair of lazily orbiting fish just inches above sea water. Their iridescent scales illuminated a small area around them, looking more like the flickering flames of a fire than anything else. Lucien and her had parted ways after the meal; the Keeper had gone to speak with the snowy-haired boy and his fascinating arm, and with no one else to occupy her time, she had found herself by the shoreline wandering aimlessly. That is, until she determinedly decided to do something productive.
Of course, things naturally didn't go her way. Somnus swirled above water, petulant and cross. As a last attempt, she lunged for them, one hand on each, and forcefully tried to submerge them, "It's... just... water...!" Trill said with a grunt, struggling bodily against her unwilling aural manifestations. A few moments later, add some sputtering as she barely caught herself from falling face first into the sea, Trill gave up with a frustrated sigh. Somnus nipped at her fingers reproachfully, flitting this way and that warily.
"You're not going to listen to me, are you?" She asked with a pout, intensifying her glare.
They flickered, and continued their lazy loop.
Thankfully, they were a little ways off from the encampment. Otherwise, Trill would surely be at the mercy of Keepers who no doubt thought it ridiculous to be conversing so passionately with such a flimsy nexus that didn't even obey simple orders. Well, maybe except for that darling blue haired boy who had fallen from the sky earlier that day, but at least his companion had been leagues more useful.
Trill sighed again, a habit she had recently picked up. "If you're not going to listen to me, then..." She opened her violin case that had been slung across one shoulder the entire time, rummaging briefly before snapping it shut again. Her violin was a work of art, all polish and beautiful wood, a finely tuned instrument that she could depend on if the whole Keeper ordeal didn't work out. That is, if she survived the coming battle. It wasn't her violin in her hand though, but a hand-puppet by the name of Mr. Julia.
A vapid faced, pink nosed, white rabbit with floppy ears and stitched on features.
Somewhere else, far, far away, they were laughing at the failure of it all, but at least Somnus was interested.
Trill grinned, twiddling her fingers to make Mr. Julia wave frantically. "You'd listen to Mr. Julia, wouldn't you though? Hm, sweethearts?" She made the puppet nod, and along with it, her nexus.
"Good!"
Left. Left. Right. Up, and down. Somnus followed attentively, dropping with the downward motion until they slipped seamlessly into the advancing waves without a sound. Mr. Julia clapped his hands as if to congratulate them on their job well done. "See? Now that wasn't so bad, was it?" Trill asked happily, eager to try out what she had wanted to do since the beginning. Underneath, Somnus swam away from shore, dragging along with it an arcing wave strong enough to go against the tide. They returned with the same force, if not more, and Trill had to quickly leap back lest she got wet.
A big smile graced her face as she threw her hands up in elated laughter, cooing nonsensical things to Somnus before she let them disappear. Quite some time had passed since, and she could feel, along with everyone else, the heady prowl of their fight to come. It wouldn't do if she showed up tired and unable to contribute, hence the stop to her pseudo-training, though most of it was a battle of will for a water-based nexus afraid of... well, water, and began to make her way back towards the livelier bits of the island.
The figures of Althalia and Mattheis caught her attention as she made her way back towards camp, and she veered towards them, wondering if they needed any help. That, and the captain seemed to know what was going on, so talking to the man was probably her best chance of not being left in the dark.
"Bah, honor. If we're going to die, we're going to go out with a 'bang'. That's how my forefathers did it, that's how the Militia does it.
"And these Nith... are going to get a royal asskicking."
Trill approached them with a smile, "Um, Mister Captain Matt-"
She was cut off as someone more enthusiastic about 'asskicking' and 'fireworks' joined the group, a stocky young boy with the more peculiar shade of orange hair. Trill paused politely, curiously listening on.
"Would either of you care to fill me in on what happened, by the way? I seem to have been out since yesterday evening. Shame I couldn't make it to your s'mores party, I heard it was an absolute blast."
"And where's Hale? Shouldn't he be up by now?
The second part of her question brought forth the image of two pretty men taking away the Keepers' captain. Oh, she must be a friend of that Hale-person, huh? She frowned, wondering how the other would react when they told her of the news. Trill knew where he was, although so did everyone else save for Rai, but she also vaguely knew where he was, position-wise, in the tower, and what he had said prior to the blood curdling scream later emitted that could be heard for miles. It was probably her fault for not saying anything when she had overheard it, but at the time she was much more fascinated in something else.
She focused her acute hearing once more towards the tower, trying to remember and find the voice she had heard briefly before. All she could hear was the churning mass of niths, the voiceless roar enough to prickle her skin in discomfort. Trill couldn't hear him, although it was probably because she couldn't hear him through the deafening screech of the tower itself, and instead told Rai what she knew from before.
"Your Hale-person is over there," Trill offered helpfully, pointing towards the tower with the help with Mr. Julia still on her hand. Really, she should have put him back into her case. Oh well. The white paw pointed up towards the top of the tower, and then moved ever so slightly to the left. "At least, that's where I heard him the last time... b-before the really loud scream."

"I'm sorry Neera. About those things before, I wouldn't have said them if I'd known that... Why am I even bothering, you probably don't care anyway..."
Neera blinked and looked over at Shino. Something began to dawn on her, and at his words she almost felt... felt... but it was hopeless, because Neera would never understand the things that she felt.
The man standing next to Shino did not wait for Neera to think about it. Instead, he hit the silver-haired boy in the ribs with his foot, knocking him over. Neera flinched for him. Another of the men pulled Shino off the ground as the other walked past, inspecting them with scrutiny.
"These are the ones?" What did he mean? He'd been searching for them specifically? But...
"Throw them in the hold and keep them under strict surveillance. I don't want any slip-ups." The man narrowed his eyes at Shino briefly, then glanced towards Raine. "Now, to deal with the third nuisance... This shouldn't take too long, don't worry." The other men nodded in response to their leader and pulled Neera and Shino to their feet. As the two captives were shoved towards the massive ship ahead, Neera looked out towards the receding backs of the men going out for the "third nuisance."
Neera's heart thumped in her chest. He couldn't mean...?
"Keep walking," said one of the men, shoving Neera forward roughly when she hesitated. She stumbled a few steps, and they pulled her up into the huge craft.
The captives were lead through a confusing labyrinth of hallways, the fluorescent lights bearing down on them from overhead. Neera tried to memorize the turns that they took, in case there was some slim chance she might be able to get out again, but after a few minutes she gave up; there were just too many hallways.
After traveling down some stairs into the belly of the ship, the men reached a row of cells. Neera was pushed into one, and the door slammed in her face. The man locked the bolts with a series of clicks and added a threatening message, then called another man to stand guard in front of her cell.
Meanwhile, Shino was pushed further down the passage, towards some cells that were more appropriate for his aura abilities. Neera watched his back disappear, and couldn't help feeling a drop of coldness in her chest. He was the last thing linking her to her brief stint of freedom, it seemed - those few hours when she'd been on a ship... in the Lifestream... with Jack. It all seemed like a dream, now. Maybe it was - and now, she was waking up again to the cold familiarity of a jail cell. Was this really the place where she belonged?
Neera lowered her head and looked at the shadows on the floor. She almost felt like she could sink into them, almost wished she could. What lay ahead for her now? She wished she knew. Then again, who ever knew the answer to that question? She felt like it hadn't mattered much until... until she'd been free for a while, and felt what it was to have a choice in the matter.
"My god..." Neera blinked and looked up slowly. Outside her cell, the hall lights were bright. Neera sat in the darkness at the back of her cage like a creature that shied away from the light. The man guarding her pulled the radio from his belt and spoke into it. "It's Rob from the holding cell. Hey, Ian..." He continued to speak into the radio - something about sending food, which Neera couldn't help but feel a spark of hope at. She watched the guard as he spoke and eventually put away his radio. He wasn't one of the men who had taken her from the Firehawk. He seemed not as brutal as them, somehow, though he still looked away from her.
Several minutes later, a man walked down the hallway with a tray of food. Neera sat up in her cell, but didn't move. A latch was slid open at the bottom of the door, and the food was pushed through. The scent was overwhelming. Neera swallowed.
"She does look rather thin and weak," commented the man who had come from upstairs. He was wearing a uniform too, but it was different from the guard's. "And we can't let her die. Well... yet," he added.
"Yeah, who knows what those people on Symphonia were doing to her," sighed the guard. "But what do they know, they're just an ignorant planet at the edge of the Lifestream..."
" 'Unaware' is the correct term, I believe," said the other man bluntly.
The guard shrugged, adjusting the huge gun in his hands and looking away casually. "Hey, I only work here." There was a silence, and the second man turned to look at Neera for a moment.
"Well, go ahead and eat or it'll get cold." said the food-bringing man. Neera stared at him flatly despite the hunger that twisted her stomach into knots.
"Doesn't say much, does she?" asked the man. The guard only shrugged.
"Probably doesn't have a clue what we're saying. She's just a beast, after all. She might look human, but inside... well, you know how the Shadowsili are." He turned his face to look at Neera through the bars, and Neera watched him sadly, the heavy feeling building up inside of her. She saw no malice there, only blank misunderstanding. It was either one or the other for those who encountered her, she realized. She wasn't sure which one pained her more.
"Nothing but darkness inside that shell," finished the guard, turning away.
The other man stared at her for a moment longer, then nodded. "I suppose you're right," The men said their formalities, and the man who had come returned upstairs.
Neera didn't move, despite the strong smell of food. She didn't want to accept anything from them, and the way they had talked about her had nearly made her lose her appetite.
It returned quickly enough though, and soon Neera found herself crawling across the floor of her cell towards the food. Living in the wilderness of Symphonia for eight months, stealing and scavenging for food, had prevented Neera from ever developing much of a sense of pride. You couldn't, if you were to survive that way.
The Shadowsili looked down at her plate. No apples. No vanilla ice cream. For some reason, the thoughts of those things made her feel a little empty inside. She grasped the bowl of soup and swallowed all of it quickly, almost as if to get it all over with. It was a very bland, watery soup - but to someone who had hardly eaten in so long, it tasted great. Neera swallowed the hard loaf of bread in a few bites. It was stale through and through, but she wasn't complaining. Best of all, though, was the water. Water, at long last.
She drank the cup to the very last drop, and wished she had more. Water... Not even Jack-
Neera stopped. She set down the cup slowly onto the tray, then pushed the thing away from her, disgusted. She felt like she'd almost betrayed some part of herself, like she'd been about to sell out Jack for some food and water. She turned away into the shadows.
The minutes crawled by. On Symphonia, Neera had counted the passage of time by the sunlight that came through the window in her cell. Here, there were no windows to the outside. Neera had never used a clock or watch as far as she knew, so she didn't think of the passage of time in terms of seconds or minutes. To her, the passage of time was the rising and setting of the sun, the changes the world made around her as the sky transitioned from dark and light and back again. Here, cramped in a cell where she couldn't see the sky at all... it was like living in a pit. Underground.
And before she could help herself, the thought made its way into her head.
The only people who lived underground were the dead.
. . .
[♬]xand you still have no one to trustx[♬]
Neera sat still for a long time. Eventually, sleep overcame her, and she slept for a short interval.
Her dreams were full of shadows, full of cold, hard shapes and unfriendly faces that said, "Inside of that shell, there's only darkness." Neera screamed at them, tried to make them understand, but they pushed her away. She ran from them. Under a starry blue sky, she stumbled over a narrow path, pushed through some bushes, and came to a sudden stop at the edge of a deep, endless chasm. Huge, sheer cliffs stood on either side; the pit was long and narrow; Neera couldn't see the end of it, nor the bottom. It was impossibly deep, and went on in a perfectly straight line until it disappeared on the horizon, melding with the dark sky.
Standing precariously at the cusp of the cliff, Neera stepped forward carefully until her toes were at the edge and looked down. The darkness made her dizzy, but somehow it seemed as if she could hear a voice there, far, far, down... a voice that called to her. Whose voice was that? It sounded familiar, but she didn't recognize it...
She could feel herself falling. Suddenly, someone grabbed her hand. Neera looked back. Jack...? His mouth moved, but no noise came out. He smiled reassuringly and-
He let go of her hand. Neera was falling through darkness. Fallling, falling, forever and ever, falling into the bottomless darkness. And besides the wind that flew through her, she couldn't feel anything. Nothing at all-
Neera's eyes flew open, and she bolted upright, awaking with a start. For a few moments, she caught her breath and looked around, trying to remember where she was. Gradually, it came back to her. The cell... yes. How long had she slept? There was no way to tell.
The girl shuffled to the back of her cell and sat breathing slowly, calming herself as she tried to organize her thoughts. It was difficult to free herself from the nightmare's grip on her mind, and she tried to think of anything else to get it out of her head. Eventually, she found herself thinking of Shino's words from earlier.
"I'm sorry-"
Neera couldn't decide if she still resented him for what he'd done or not. He had hurt Jack, after all. But he'd apologized for it. He apologized. That was just the thing. And Neera couldn't get over the feeling that they were somehow alike, beyond just the shade of their hair. And there was something more... Why had Jack fought Shino in the first place?
She'd followed Jack blindly until now, but she had to wonder, at least a little, about what his purpose in capturing Shino was. Who was Shino, anyway? It couldn't be... because of the way he looked, right? Neera was sure that couldn't have been the reason Jack fought him. After all, she looked different too, but he'd helped her...
Maybe, just maybe, she and Shino weren't so different from each other, after all. So why had Jack treated them differently...?
As Neera was considering this, the guards changed shifts.
"Apparently, the bounty hunter is giving them more trouble than expected," said the new guard, a shorter man with blond hair and an oval face. Neera's head snapped up, and she strained to catch every word.
The first guard, the man with a sharp chin and graying hair, stepped into the hall, switching positions with the new guy. He snorted, "What, that redhead guy who delivered the goods? I thought they said he wouldn't be..." The man trailed off and looked over at Neera. "Hah, look at this," The girl had scooted across her cell and come to the front to better hear the conversation. She sat grasping the bars as she stared at the two men in uniforms. "What's the matter, little girl?" Neera pulled herself into a standing position, glaring at them.
"You know, I think she's actually..." The guard's face broke out into a smile. "I think she's actually worried about him!" The other man blinked, and then the both of them broke out into hardy laughter.
Neera didn't move. She couldn't see what was so funny about the situation. Ruffling the folds of her dress, she pulled out a small notebook from her waist and opened it, then began scribbling something with the pencil that had been inside. On impulse, she reached for the spot where she usually kept her sketchbook, but found the place devoid of it. Her heart sank a little - that book was very important to her, after all. But now wasn't the time to worry about it.
"Hey, the girl can write?" The guards exchanged glances. "I thought she was just dumb."
Neera pressed the completed sentence up to the bars of the cage. Her writing was surprisingly good. The taller guard squinted and read the words slowly. " 'Tell me what happened,' it says. Hah... AHAHAHAHAH!"
"Ha ha, look at that, she honestly doesn't get it!" The grinned at each other and chuckled, truly amused.
Neera looked from one to the other, confused. What does he mean...?
"What, you thought he was your friend?" said the first guard between laughs. "This is too good! Oh man... you explain to her, I'm going to go take my break. Although I almost wish I could stay down here and play," said the guard. His laughter echoed as he walked away down the hall. Neera heard the door close behind him and looked desperately towards the new guard.
"Alright, stupid. Human world lesson number one. Do you know what a 'b o u n t y - h u n t e r' is?" The man said it slowly and demeaningly, as if he were speaking to a small child.
Neera swallowed. She'd heard the word before, but...
"Bounty hunters go around collecting wanted criminals and handing them over to the highest bidder. Can you guess who the bounty hunter is, little girl?"
Neera had begun to shake. Her grip on the bars tightened, her knuckles turning white. Something wasn't right here.
The man grinned, his teeth gleaming in the light from the hallway. He apparently enjoyed seeing her pain. "That's right, your mister redhead 'friend.' Hah. Since you're so stupid, let me lay it out for you. You're a Shadowsili, and because of that, you have to be contained. Or else you might hurt someone. So we hired your buddy Jack Sanguine to do a little spring cleaning for us and hand you and the other kid over. Do you get it now? He traded you both in for money."
The girl shook her head slowly, feeling numb. Somehow, she couldn't understand what he was saying. She knew the words, she knew what he was saying. She just wasn't comprehending. It... wasn't possible.
"I almost pity you, you know that? You believed all of his lies," the guard said. "Let me tell you something. You may think we're pretty bad people here, but even we're not as low as him. Those bounty hunters, the Sanguines especially, don't have hearts. They're-"
Neera flung herself against the bars and reached towards him, trying to grab at the man and shake him, punch him - anything to get him to stop saying those things. "Doesn't have a heart" - What could you possibly know about that?! Neera wanted to scream it at him. But even so, as soon as she thought it, she couldn't say why the idea came into her mind.
The guard promptly grabbed her hands and twisted her arms in different directions, and Neera gasped at the pain in her wrists. "HEY! Don't try anything stupid, Shadowsili. I'm telling you the TRUTH here. That's more than your backstabbing 'friend' ever did for you." He let go of her and swung his gun up, slamming the butt of it into her shoulder. She landed hard on the floor of her cell and stared back up at him, breathing heavily, her fingers clenching into fists.
"If you just took a moment to think about it, it'd be obvious to you. Maybe you really are as stupid as they say," said the guard, watching her with disgust. "Then again, I don't expect you to understand... you're just a Shadowsili, after all.
You're not even human."
Neera pushed herself into the back wall of her cell, covering her ears with her hands. She could still hear his voice, though.
"How does it feel, huh? The one person you thought you could trust is actually the biggest liar of all."
No, I don't believe you! She shook her head frantically, as if trying to force the idea away from her. Her hands pushed into her hair, pressing her ears shut. Something was stuck in her throat, and she couldn't breath.
"Believe me, these bounty hunters are all heartless..."
"Going to trust you...
Jack...
"You didn't really think anyone would help a Shadowsili, right?"
"Don't tell me you're so hungry you can't even talk." Jack said, breaking the silence."I guess it can't be helped. Those guys treated you worse than my old man did, and that's pretty bad."
It's not true, right...? I don't want to believe... that's it's true. Neera hiccuped out a dry sob, though there were no tears in her eyes.
"It's the truth. But then again, who can you trust, really, when everyone wants you dead?"
"Really? I save your life and you can't even say thank you Neera?" She could see him grinning.
Don't smile at me if you're lying... Neera pushed her face into her knees, curled tightly against the wall.
"I guessed, it seemed to suit you. I'm Jack and I came here in this big ship... Nice to meet you."
All of it... was it really just a lie? Neera shivered, her pale shoulders shaking.
The guard outside her cell turned away nonchalantly. "You were bound to find out sooner or later."
The girl was unsure of which party to believe. Half of her knew that it had all been too good to believe from the start, that of course it had all been a ruse. All the evidence pointed to it, anyway. It was a wonder she didn't realize it before. It all lined up. It explained why he knew her name, and her favorite food. It explained why he'd saved her from the lynching, why he'd taken care of her and given her food. Even the guards had said she wasn't any use dead at the point.
It explained why he'd said with such finality, "Take care of yourselves," and left. Left the door open. Allowed the men to take her and Shino. He wasn't coming back for them.
And yet... it didn't explain why she felt as if she'd known him before that. Maybe it was just a mistake, but...
She couldn't give up so easily. To admit that Jack had lied to her would be to admit that she didn't have a single friend in... in the entire universe, maybe. She didn't want to give up on him. Not yet. No matter what they said. She wouldn't believe it until she heard it from him. Because in spite of all the arrows pointing in the other direction, she wanted to believe that these men were the ones who were lying, and not Jack.

Once blinded by light.
Once lost in darkness.
But now, I can see clearly. I walk not as a savior.
But as a destroyer. I am the destroyer that saves. I am Jace Vistus.
I am me.
| Location - Vectiras || The Island of Aedif |
"Yeah... I think... I have an idea of how it works." Jace said shyly as Lucien inspected his arm and had his suspicions confirmed, it was something common on high ranking Nith... then he really was a... Shadowsili... The youth snapped back to reality at Lucien's quiet words of thanks, his gray eyes were dazed for a moment before they squinted to try and hide the gratitude inside them. "I'm... I'm happy to help mister." Jace couldn't help but let a smile touch his face as he looked past Lucien and Trill into the distance where the obscuring fog surrounded the apocalyptic construct of the World Eater Tower, he might be a monster but he was a monster with a purpose.
That was when Jace noticed the small black shapes in the horizon, blending in with the gloomy fog of the morning and the darkness brought by the Nith's devices; rapidly they approached and in a moment of horror he realized what they were. "EVERYONE! LO- !" His voice was cut off by the impact of several projectiles comprised of Nith energy across the camps causing a wave of explosions to tear through the camp, causing blackened craters in the sand, demolishing makeshift tents and defenses and cutting off screams of alarm with a deadly silence. Within an instant everything on the tranquil shoreline of Aedif, where the gentle lapping of the waves was even audible, erupted into total chaos.
| ♪ The End of The World ♪ |
"Listen up weaklings !!" The shout could be heard above the roar of the camp as the defenders on the shore scrambled across the already bloodied sand to occupy their positions across the demolished camp. Heads were raised through the blinding smoke, debris and darkness blanketing the camp, partially to listen to what the voice from above had to say but also out of curiosity as to why the Nith didn't fire a second barrage upon them. The upturned faces of the Keepers and Militia turned to grim masks of determination or cracked to reveal despair and shock at what they saw, the Nith didn't even need the World Eater Tower. There were so many of them that they could block out the sky with just their numbers, hundreds upon thousands of airborne Ravagers, Harbingers, Syphons and Regenerators filled the air with their incessant keening joined by a clashing symphony of terrible roars as a great cloud of Regenerators and Syphons detached themselves and piled into the shore below forming into inky legions of earthbound Nith.
"T-theres... s-so many!" Despairing cries filled the air as many inexperienced Keepers, Militia and recruits alike felt the courage race out of their body and leave them with a shaking husk that wouldn't obey even the most basic of their own orders. "Hah! This is the best that the Collective's Guardians can do!? I thought Keepers were going to be a challenge but, they're already shitting themselves before we've even begun !!" And if the seemingly endless horde of Nith weren't enough, with their twisted auras visibly displayed to leave no doubt about who they were, a group of Shadowsili joined the Nith; among them was the man who had shouted at the Keepers. The man alone had an aura that could be mistaken for the aura signature of a cruiser class Worldship, his terrifying eyes scanning the infinitely smaller enemy force for something as his overwhelming aura beat down upon them, causing some defenders to fall to their knees out of the sheer pressure exerted by the pulses of his aura.
"Bah... Not a single one of you look like you could last more than five seconds! I'd rather fight your captain but he can't do that right now..." The second comment extracted several angry cries out of the Keeper's force, terrified they might be, this was their captain and they felt close to Hale despite his strange methods and the fact that they had only known him for a little while; the determination he displayed during their entrance into Vectiras was enough to win him their loyalty. "For once, you're right Juriza. They're all weak, and weakness is a flaw... Every last one of them will be reborn without flaw... Angel, Lance. Find him." Two other smaller Shadowsilis, each standing upon a disk of Nith energy, nodded in reply to the taller blond masked Shadowsili's order and descended to the shore along with the Nith while three of their brethren, the Shadowsili from earlier with the overwhelming aura, a black haired Shadowsili with an air of calm and composure that watched wordlessly with it's arms folded and the sinister blond man who seemed to be their leader.

A roar of defiance rose up from the ranks of the Keepers, their battered uniforms standing out against the billowing smoke caused by the initial attack of the Nith, and Militia, their eyes determined to avenge their fallen comrades, along with the people of Aedif who had volunteered to help, their life energy blazing to protect the world that they called home, forming a coalition that showed they wouldn't allow the Nith an easy victory as the darkness of the shore was lit up with the blaze of aura as Nexuses were activated (for the first time for many) and battle cries filled the air.
"My my. I'm not used to crowds..." said Joshua, the tall keeper's aura mixing with the auras of the defenders standing with him, their shining auras creating a dazzling light that seemed to illuminate the shore and a good portion of Aedif itself with the light of day but infinitely more beautiful as it stood out in the stark darkness of fog that strangled Vectiras. "... Ready young master? Your stage awaits little one." Joshua said with a calmness that helped relax the other fights around him, the reply came in the form of the ignition of an aura. A white cloak of flames was thrown back, it's seemingly infinite length fluttering in the wind, a shock of spiky white hair, one hand grasping the edge of a helmet which clamped over a determined but child-like face and the other; black and spiny raised into the air sending up a spiral of white aura energy that blazed like a bonfire among hundreds of small fires along the shore. Nobody noticed the little fox tail poking out from under the aura cloak but Joshua who turned to seething mass of darkness ahead with a unconcerned smile.
"Ready as I'll ever be."
Further down the shore at the back of the camp Jace ,and those around him at the time of the attack, emerged from a protective cocoon of white aura that faded away with the smoke and debris dust. His concerned eyes picked out the glow of his own aura down the shore instantly as it burned like a beacon among the various auras facing the main force of the Nith, "Good luck everyone." Mei... please be safe. the billowing of wind and the rapidly approached flap of wings told him that the time for worrying was over and now, it was his turn. Allowing the last of his visible aura to fade away and become inactive after it pulled up his uniform's hood over his head, Jace raised his hand and braced himself.
Barely warned by the rushing of wind, the Shadowsili yelped in surprise as his arm was almost jerked out of it's socket by a tail that grabbed it and ripped him from the earth and into the air, with a flick of it's powerful muscles, the beast owning the tail flung the boy bodily through the air and onto it's back where the draconian creature was being piloted... or rather directed by a Hyralvine bomber, the bomber's goggled eyes focused on the route ahead, not even bothering to look back to see if it's passenger was still intact. Leaning forward and hugging onto the saddle tightly, Jace squinted as the wind whipped at his eyes causing them to water, below them the water rushed by in a stream of blurred images for Jace, he let out a sigh of relief, which was quickly punched back into his throat by the wind, as he saw shadows on the water of other creatures similar to the one he was riding on.
Daring to crane his neck to the side to look sideways, the Shadowsili was glad to see that everyone had managed to make it, several Keepers and otherwise clung for dear life onto their respective mounts in a manner not unlike Jace as the small squadron of Hyralvine aerial beasts and their riders raced across the ocean using rolling clouds of smoke as cover and taking advantage of the distraction caused by the defenders onshore. Unfortunately, while the ploy might have worked against almost any other enemy, the Nith were far more attentive and cunning than that and noticed them quite quickly.
"Such foolishness. What do you hope to achieve by this meaningless act? Shoot them out of the air." Jace sensed a spike in Nith energy ahead, his watering eyes barely managing to make out several Harbingers in the air above them, their cannons filling with inky black energy. "Hold on tight kid." Jace gulped and did what he was told, clinging to the drake as it suddenly swerved, a blast striking the place where they were an instant ago, the splash erupting from the impact spraying all over them. Dancing through the air in an elaborate pattern of swivels, cockscrews, turns and reverses; Jace felt an exhilarating rush of adrenaline and terror pound through his body. A cry from behind them signaled the fall of one of the riders, "If you insist, then I will take matters in my own hands." in front of them, seemingly from the ocean rushed forth a tangle of living green attempting to wipe them out with vines, massive thorns and huge buds that devoured anything unfortunate enough to be caught in them.
"s**t! Hold on!" Jace said nothing, merely gripping the saddle and stomach of the drake even tighter as his bomber made an increasingly complex number of aerial maneuvers, the world becoming nothing but a blur of dizzying red, green and ocean blue to Jace. Despite his bomber's efforts however, the rushing vines moved faster than them and were now quickly gaining on them from behind, a small protrusion of one rushed past; slashing open a cut on Jace's cheek although he felt nothing as the pain was over-ridden by fear and adrenaline. More of them rushed out from behind, surrounding them but then something strange happened, they suddenly stopped as a creaking noise progressed along the vines behind them, turning his head slightly to look; Jace was shocked to see the great mass of killer greenery blanketed in a covering of frost and now withering away and fading into aura traceries.
Whipping his head around in the direction of an anguished cry, Jace's mouth went agape with amazement, rising on the side of the aerial squad and covering their flank was a gigantic tidal wave that was still rising, a surging wall of ocean water that deflected the attacks of the Harbingers and crashed into the pursuing group sending them tumbling into the ocean's roaring depths. From behind the fallen Harbingers, the two Shadowsili; the blond man and the dark haired came; borne on floating disks that covered the distance between them and the bombers with horrifying speed but before they could reach them, tendrils of water whipped out from the churning ocean freezing solid as they made impact with the disks and dragging them to a stop sending their owners tumbling forwards into the ocean where a wall of ice rose to their great frustration and to bar their way.
"Wow. Keepers really are something aren't they?" Jace blinked, a Keeper had done... all of that? Unable to reply without being suffocated by the rushing wind, the shadowsili nodded enthusiastically. A single person did... that? ... They really are amazing... He was snapped out of his hopeful thoughts by a cry up ahead as a crushing wave of aura sent crashing waves in all directions and nearly smashed Jace off his mount as it hit him almost like a solid object, at least two bombers lay in the water; crushed by the ocean waves or knocked off balance and sent spiraling into a crash by the immense pressure of the aura wave. Up ahead, standing in a depression in the water with his aura forcing the water away save for the water he stood upon, molded into place by aura pressure was the man who had caused the crushing wave of aura pressure; the Shadowsili Juriza Sanada along with a small battalion of wildly chattering Nobles and behind them, Ravagers with their beam weapons charging with energy aimed straight at the group. The wild and ragged Shadowsili grinned at them, his massive anchor weapon pointed at them in a challenge, "Hah! Thought you would slip away you cowards? Well then. Are any of you strong enough to be my opponent!?"
The smile wasn't going to last long.
Over the communications system, the bombers shouted almost simultaneously, "NOW !! Blast those Nith sky-high!" the sound waves relaying to Joshua who blazed with aura in the middle of battle, finishing off the Night facing him with a punch infused with aura that slammed into it's chest and blasted it into oblivion; the horned man spun around to Mattheis' location on the battlefield. "Young Hiashin! Now!" There was a split second pause and then, a deafening bang rang out across the battlefield.

“Anything new? ” The orphan girl lit up a smoke.
“What do you want to hear?” Asked the bartender. He placed the pint of beer in front of June.
“As I said, anything.” June blew smoke through her lips.
“You know there’s rumors about the Keepers,” the bartender said. “They’re looking for certain people.”
“I’ve heard. Be specific. ” June sipped the beer meditatively.
“They’re recruiting. Guess they need more grunts or something, the world ain’t turning out too well these days you know.”
“It never has.” June pounded the mug on the countertop. The thud was loud enough to turn a few heads.
“Don’t get yer panties in a bunch, ” the bartender replied, “life’s already a b***h. Besides, ya want me to tell ya anything or not?”
June gestured him to continue.
“So anyways, they’re looking for people with strong Auras. As far as I know, not many people have that kind of thing.”
“Nope. It’s a myth from what I know. No one does magic these days. I’d like some steak fries by the way. ”
“Sure thing. ” The bartender promptly went through the kitchen doors. A short while later he brought out a basket of fries in a red basket, golden brown and steaming hot. He gave the basket to June.
“Thanks.”
“No prob. I always wondered what life would be like as a Keeper. Have you?” The barkeep looked at June, obviously eager for an answer.
“Never thought about it.”June had no time for dreams, except in sleep. It was already hard to live day by day.
“So you don’t live for anything?”
“No.”
“What do you do?”
“Eat. Sleep. Scavenge. Rise, wash, repeat.” June finished the rest of her beer and fries. “Here you go. Thanks Jerry. ” She took out a silver pocket watch, and tossed it to the bartender.
“That all you got? Can’t give ya change.” Jerry examined the watch.
“I could use some.” June got up and started towards the door.
“I just told ya, I can’t give ya any.”
“No you can’t.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“I’ll get it myself, thanks. Maybe I’ll encounter a Keeper someday.”
“Whatever. You talk crazy s**t all the time. Don’t know about the whole Keeper thing though. They’re picky folk when it comes to recruitment, and in these parts they come and go. Can’t guarantee that you’d become one of them either.”
“I’ll take my chances. As I said I’ll get it myself.”
“It?” Jerry raised an eyebrow. “What are you--?”
Before he could finish his sentence, June already left the bar.

The explosion jolted June from her slumber. Only clad in her underwear, she grabbed her gear and bolted out of her tent, half-dressing and half-running (in bare feet) towards the center of battle, stopping every now and then to get everything on. Although people were staring at the Keeper fumbling with her armful of clothing, she didn’t care.
"Listen up weaklings !! This is the best that the Collective's Guardians can do!? I thought Keepers were going to be a challenge but, they're already shitting themselves before we've even begun !! Not a single one of you look like you could last more than five seconds! I'd rather fight your captain but he can't do that right now..."
June felt a strong Aura pushing her back, not allowing her to go any further. The power emanating from it was enough to terrify the faint of heart.
“Hey, b***h!" June called out to the Nith leader. “Let’s go.”
The twin snakes at the Keeper’s feet fused and coiled around her, forming the distinctive armored suit she was known for. Nexus activated, June pulled out Judgment, ready to fire if needed. She pulled down the visor of her mask to keep out the glare. She positioned the revolver at her hip, fanning the hammer and blasting shots of Aura at unfortunate Nith, taking their limbs and heads off, cauterizing the stumps of flesh remaining.
“Anyone want to volunteer? Come on, don’t be shy!” A sardonic grin spread across June’s face.

|| [†]Telosia Lightwing | Junior Captain: Team 9-AC | Keeper Camp, Aedif - Vectiras [†] ||
The Night Before...
Telosia pulled herself away from her own thoughts no sooner than to hear Captian Hiashin address her with any input she could offer. She smiled at the captain awkwardly, trying to play off her lack of attention, quite poorly though. Even though, she could only vaguely grasp the idea of what Captain Hiashin was planning, she figured it would suffice. They had survived this long against the nith and they were not aura users – most of them.
“It suits me fine…” Replied the Grim Angel, who had apparently sat in on the conversation without her knowing, which was odd, given his rather unsettling Aura and how pervasive it was, even when inactive. The Grim Angel then proceeded to get up and walk away from their little commune with each other. Telosia followed him with her eyes until he was out of sight… Then a most perplexing thought occurred to her…. Why do Grim Angels have to be so damned enigmatic? and emotionless to boot...
Her face contorted into a frustrated appearance, as she attempted to unravel that idea… However, it was no use, for her attention snapped back to the Captain and the young boy, named Jace, realizing that she should probably say something.
“Um, yes. I don’t believe I have any objections. I don’t think there’s much else we can do in any case…” she spoke carefully, and slowly. She was sure to make the statement general enough to encompass what might’ve been said, but accurate enough to make it seem as though she had actually been paying attention.
She rose up from her seat by the fire, and walked towards jace and the Captain. As she passed Jace she ruffled his white snowy hair, as she said, “You better get some rest… We’ve got quite the day tomorrow… And we don’t want any mishaps… Right?” she chimed with a genuinely warm smile, “Please excuse me, I think the strain of taking up the reigns so suddenly has worn me out…” she explained as she began to walk off. However, she wasn’t going in quite the right direction. Whether subconsciously, or intentionally, she had wandered off after the Grim Angel.
She continued along the sandy beach, nonchalantly through the darkness.
“You’re tent will not be found here…” the words came suddenly, out of the darkness and seeped into her ears so coldly that it made her shiver. She spun around to face the voice.
“Ah..! I-I guess it isn’t… Heh,” she answered jumpily, as if she had been caught doing something she wasn’t supposed to be. She then, suddenly became quite solemn, and looked into the dark corner of a large stone where the voice originated. She could see the glow of the Grim’s eyes faintly. He was certainly an unsettling fellow. Though, she pushed that to the back of her mind for the time being. “There’s a question I would like to ask of you, Mister…?” she paused, and then figured out that she actually had no recollection of this man’s name, “Um, what is your name? come to think of it…” she asked childishly.
The eye then began to move, growing closer. He was then revealed fully as the absolute darkness of the shaded corner released him from its grasp, giving way to the barely brighter world of night.
“I am Serakai, Leonoka…” his answer was cold as usual, and to the point, no frills about it. He then stopped about two arms lengths away from her, and awaited her question.
To Telosia, the shadowy figure that emerged from the shade, could’ve been pulled straight from a nightmare, but she held herself together. There was something more pressing on her mind. She observed him as best she could given such low light, even with her elf eyes it was a stretch to actually discern things in this night.
“Why are you helping us? Do not misunderstand me, we are extremely gracious for you help… but—“
Leonoka cocked his head to the side, and peered at her curiously, “Allow me to ask you a question… Why do I concern you so?” His question pierced her through and through, sending a sudden jolt through her, as if her subconscious plotting had just now been found out and brought to her attention.
“I… I really don’t know…” She said hanging her head low, staring at her feet, “I suppose… You remind me of someone I knew a long time ago…” she said this affectionately, but emotional damage was overwhelmingly apparent in her tone. Leonoka continued to stare at her, observing her fully. She was rather odd, even by elf standards.
“Did you know another Grim Angel?” he asked abruptly, the fact that he reminded her of someone had peeked his interest greatly. Maybe she had met his sister.
Telosia chuckled softly, “No… You’re actually the first one I’ve seen… But your aura has some qualities that feel somehow familiar…” The statement puzzled him. As far as he knew there were no other beings aside from Grims that had auras even similar to his own.
“May I ask the name of your friend?” Telosia’s head snapped up, surprised. It was such an odd request, why would he need her name. Did she even remember her name… Of course! How could she forget!
“Marna… Marna Nimreldiel… Why? Do you know her?” The name fell from her lips sorrowfully, and painfully, but her tone changed into a more anxious hopeful tone as she asked her question. The light from Leonoka’s eyes were cut off as he closed them and shook his head.
“I am sorry… It seems that I have caused you pain, and the question was ultimately fruitless… Forgive me…” Though his words were cold and emotionless, Telosia interpreted a great deal of compassion resounding from those words, which was odd… She had always figured Grims to be much more indifferent.
She smiled graciously and said, “No, no. You’re okay. It was my fault to let myself get like that… She was a dear friend, but even though I know our friendship was just a big game to her… a means of passing the time – a façade – I still can’t believe that she would just play with me like that. She was my best friend while I attended the Lightwing Academy… I confided in her for so much, and it end up ruining my life, my family’s and it meant the damnation of the entire academy…” she paused and tilted her head, “Well, perhaps I can,” this statement aroused an raised eyebrow from Leonoka, “Maybe I can believe that she was that way… So, perhaps… It’s the fact that I don’t want to believe that I fell for it, that it may be me that caused so much hardship…”
“I now understand why I worry you… If I do indeed remind you of such a person, it is a general nature to have such anxieties…” Telosia laughed softly at his explanation.
“If you want to be technical about it, sure…” she shrugged, before slapping Leonoka on the shoulder and walking off towards camp. Her sudden changes in moods were rather perplexing. Elves were indeed quite an emotional race. “Don’t stay up too late, we’re getting the show on the road early, and we’re gonna need you!”
Leonoka looked after her perplexedly, and then whispered to himself… “Sleep…?” he shook his head, “if only it were possible…” the words fell from his lips unwillingly, as if he wished to refute to idea, but the words rang too true to deny… He then turned to look over at the tower… It was blatantly visible to him, It was a shade of black that was on a whole different scale than that of the blackness around it.
“Hale… is it? Whether alive or dead, my debt will be repaid… “
Morning…
Telosia stirred awake sunless morning… No light peered in from the skies, there was no differentiating night and day, only by her chronometer did she actually know it was morning, and a dreary one at that… She rose off her cot and readied herself. She equipped herself with everything necessary: her staff, various catalysts, comlink and other gear. However, before passing out of her tent, her eye caught something. Standing next to a chair that sat at the opening of the tent, rested a captain’s saber. She was a bit surprised. She didn’t notice Hale ever carrying one, and it wouldn’t have mattered anyways, being that the ship had been destroyed. Which begged the question, why on earth was there one here, and in her tent...?
Whatever the case may be, she decided to take it as well. And though she was a mage at heart and unaccustomed to swords, her father had been a Battle Mage in service to the King for a good part of her early childhood. She could only hope that some of that experience and talent had rubbed off on her. And if nothing else, it would serve and a morale booster, giving the crew the figure of a Captain to look up to, even if she was just a substitute.
“Oh well, it wouldn’t hurt any…” she said as she grabbed the saber and tethered it to her side. Stepping out into the camp, she immediately noticed that it was just barely brighter than last night, but it was brighter. The camp was in a flurry of movement, carrying out their orders and preparations. Off on the other side of camp stood the young Captain Hiashin, to who she quickly made her way to.
Coming up alongside the other captain, Telosia announced her presence by saying, “Well, Young Captain Hiashin… It looks like you have got everything practically prepared. Now, it’s time for the execution… “ She said this quite solemnly, fitting for the situation they were in, but in no way was it her as she usually was. Her night had not been a pleasant one, the talk of her friend the night before had left a bad taste in her mouth and had scrapped off a scab that had taken years to form. However, nonetheless, in true Telosia fashion, she pumped herself up and stood triumphantly upon the knoll they all stood on.
“But, of course, the execution will go off without a hitch! It must! The stage is set and the cast is ready. NOW!—“ she shouted as she tugged at her new saber… which failed to come out. Swords were awkward things, and this sudden halt in her performance was certainly burdensome. She worked at the hilt and scabbard with a fixated face, frustration just on the edges of her face threatening to take over. Then the sword came free with a sweeping movement and an, “Aha!” which was followed by her holding her saber high, and shouting the rest of her previous statement.
“NOW! LET’S GO KICK SOME NITH a**!” Immediately, after she said that, explosions ripped through the camp. She turned around with a face that read as if she had done something that she didn’t mean to do, and she said meekly, “Oops… Did I do that..?” as she poked her fingers together… Then it hit her like a ton of bricks. The oppressive darkness. It was all around them, suffocating them. Her face turned her innocent “oopsies” face to a more determined and cold countenance, as she whirred about.
“Listen up weaklings !!” Telosia’s eyes scanned the smoke marred skies for the origin of the voice, but then the worriment of her crew and the rest became overwhelmingly apparent. Oh dear, I forgot… They’re all greenhorns, for the most part…
“Hah! Is this the best the Collective’s Guardians can do!? I thought Keepers would be more of a challenge but, they’re already shitting themselves before we’ve even begun !!... Bah… Not a single one of you look like you could more then five seconds! I’d rather fight your captain, but I can’t do that right now…”
Telosia’s eyes flared angrily at the audacity of this loudmouth shadowsili, her eyes locking on him with a subtle fury of rimefire about her eyes. With a huff she turned around to the mass of people behind her.
“What is this!? You all are sitting here soiling your pants, gawking at these Dirtwards while our captain is somewhere up in that tower, being subjected to who knows what. He took the hit for our team to get us in here! Now we just have to get him out! When it comes down to something like that, what will it be?? HUH!?!?” she turned around towards the Shadowsili, as two of them were already descending upon them. “What do you take us for!?... We are KEEPERS! And this is our Might!” Her aura suddenly flared into activity, the ground about her flash-froze, “This is our WILL!” her aura flared to even greater extent, “THIS. IS. OUR. LIGHT!” with that her aura finally erupted to a whole other level, reaching its peak, making it plainly apparent just how she had become a Junior Captain. She was running on all cylinders now, she wasn’t about to let anything stop what they had planned.
Thus, the battle began. The aerial team zipped over head, as nith shells heralded down upon the camp. As they flew out over the battle field the Nith’s attentions was immediately diverted to them. They were ready for this, but there was still just enough of a gap to do something about it. This time the shadowsili became more active in the fight. Apparently, they knew their weakness, and were set on putting an end to that weakness, which would mean the end for this world… and Hale. Telosia, instantly called forth her nexus and set to motion one hell of a spell combination, without realizing it something else was activated as well within her. Her eyes were illuminated with a blue light, and a blue rune shone brightly, through her clothing even, over her right shoulder. What happened would’ve have granted her instant graduation from the Lightwing Academy.
She used the ocean itself, pulling it higher and higher, creating a tidal wave of stellar proportions, she slid it up and in between the aerial crew and their pursuers, catching several nith up in it as she did so. Then, It froze – instantly. Just as it did so, wisps of water whipped out from below, catching the disks of two shadowsili that were in hot pursuit, and then freezing. This held the disks fast, and sent the shadowsili down into the tumbling ocean.
Telosia yet stood upon the knoll, but the spells had taken a great deal of energy from her, as was evident when her nexus reverted into its level one stage. She breathed heavily, for a few moments before taking one very deep breath and then striking a triumphant, determined pose, her saber yet again raised to sky. “Where do you think you’re going!? You’re we...” she gestured to the keepers behind her, “are your opponents…”

Keeper Camp / The Ocean Battlefront, Aedif, Vectiras

......."I fully support this style of asskicking; the kind that has lots of fireworks."
....... Mattheis turned his head and smirked with appreciation at the... feminine-looking red-headed boy(?) that approached them. "Well! At least someone agrees with my method of war." The boy then proceeded to ask them about what'd happened the previous night while he was out and about Hale. Figuring out that the newcomer was a Keeper (it was kind of hard to tell without the standard black-and-white Keeper Uniform - perhaps he was a mechanic?), Mattheis rose a finger and opened his mouth to answer, but someone answered for him:
......."Your Hale-person is over there," a girl with a hand-puppet said, the "rabbit" on her hand gesturing toward the Tower as she filled in. The Captain vaguely recognized her as one of the Keeper hopefuls from his ship. "At least, that's where I heard him the last time... b-before the really loud scream." Mattheis and Althalia nodded in confirmation. Oh, poor child, so seemingly young (and pretty), with the hand puppet and polite demeanor. Matt worried the most for people like this on the battlefield - the naive greenhorns always died first in battle, at least from what he knew from experience. Still, it wasn't like he could stop her from joining the battle if she so wished - or others, for that matter. He'd urged the inexperienced, younger Keeper hopefuls and civilians to stay in the town to avoid unnecessary losses, but, well... You can lead a Hylravine Servant to water, but you can't make it drink.
.......Deciding to leave the rest of the talking to the girls (and boy...?), he took a quick scan of the camp behind him. Many more were rising up, but most were not completely awake yet; Mattheis did not expect the attack to begin for a little while, but one could never be quite sure about that. He spotted some familiar faces - Navigator Altya and a team of Technomages heading toward the (turned-around) ship's remains to attempt to repair the cannons for manual fire, Ruhalis heading toward Althalia with his own board and equipment ready, and Entropy, standing not too far away, seemingly deep in thought, and mourning over one of his fellow Dreskans lost in the previous battle.
.......Entropy, Entropy. An intriguing name, an equally intriguing and memorable man for the name. First the interesting introduction in Voltaire, then the rescue from the wreckage, the fierce watch over the Captain while he was unconscious, and the healings (the last three of which Mattheis was informed of by some of the medics and guards who had been "scared shitless by that guy", as one of them put it). Mattheis swore he'd never met the Corpse before - hell, he'd never even been to Dresk prior to the mission - but Entropy knew his name and concerns on the first meeting, and he'd been acting particularly protective of him since the crash. Everyone in Hylravi knew of the House Hiashin, of course, and its last publicly known survivor (the rest hiding out somewhere, anonymously protecting Hylravi from both its outside enemies and themselves since the Second Revolution), but he was sure that he couldn't possibly be famous enough to be well-known across the Life-Stream, much less have foreign followers willing to protect him with such vigilance.
.......Then, what was it? Mattheis scratched his chin in thought (Hrm, I need to shave soon...) - still, whatever it was that was driving the Dreskan man so, as long as it would be helpful in the upcoming battle, for the most part Matt had no problems with it. He made a mental note to thank Entropy later for his help, whatever it was for, and then...
.......“Well, Young Captain Hiashin… It looks like you have got everything practically prepared. Now, it’s time for the execution… “ Oh, Telosia - a face he hadn't seen yet this morning. Both he, Althalia, and Ruhalis whirled around and saluted the Junior Captain respectfully. She continued, enthusiastically, “But, of course, the execution will go off without a hitch! It must! The stage is set and the cast is ready. NOW!—“
.......Now, while Hylravi had recently pushed into more modern weapons and technology like guns and worldships, wielding a sword was still one of the most basic skills learned in their world. Thus, the respectful salutes of the Hylravine Captain, Keeper, and Communications Officer quickly dropped into embarrassed face-palms as Telosia struggled with her sword in an attempt to make an epic show of drawing it on cue with her speech. Obviously, the timing was rendered completely off as she tugged on the blade and scabbard with frustration.
.......Mattheis leaned to the side slightly to whisper his commentary to the Saloshin siblings as he half-frowned and half-smirked at the scene before him. "She could... really use a bit of work on that." The young Keeper snorted in amusement.
......."Yeah, well. Can't blame her - things ain't the same in other worlds as they are back home, dude." Both of the men standing on each side of her gave an almost synchronized, sagely nod.
.......Finally, with an exclamation of triumph, she pulled out her Captain's saber and held it high in the air as she completed her previous statement: “NOW! LET’S GO KICK SOME NITH a**!”
......."EVERYONE! LO- !" Jace's call was cut off by the deafening explosions of Nith energy that struck the camp and the subsequent shrieks that followed (or were cut off by the projectiles). Those who were still standing hit the bloodied sand and covered their heads until the explosions cleared. The tranquility had dulled their senses, and within seconds everyone was given a rude and violent awakening... or, well, didn't wake up at all, and never would again.
......."Listen up, weaklings!!" As the smoke cleared, the scrambling fighters turned their faces up toward the sky with horror as they searched for the source of the shout. Ravagers, Harbingers, Syphons and Regenerators - an infinite mass of them, blotting out the sky, some of them breaking formation and descending down to form the Nith's ground troops. Hope, courage, and faith drained from the faces and cores of the resisting forces as they all felt the oppressive force push down upon them, sending many down to their knees in despair. The Shadowsili forces revealed themselves amongst their Nith army, including the source of the voice. "Hah! This is the best that the Collective's Guardians can do!? I thought Keepers were going to be a challenge but, they're already shitting themselves before we've even begun!!"
......."Ggh!" Keepers, Militiamen, Dreskans, and the native Vectiran defenders alike were falling to their knees, drowning in the heavy Shadowsili force weighing down upon them. Such an army, and such powerful auras - the hopelessness that they had now was infinitely greater than before. Was this how it would all end? Fate itself, crashing down upon them in an inky black mass, with no consent whatsoever from the living, their names and faces lost and, later, forgotten to the Collective forever?
.......Mattheis could feel himself descending, about to kneel, but in mid-bow, mid-fall, his eyes caught the drained faces of his men, his allies. Why? Why will no one stand? Not even I... At that moment, he caught himself, his head lowered and his knees bent, but not quite on the ground just yet. Was there anyone? Was there anyone that would... that could get up? That would say something, anything to bring their spirits up, even if it was a lie? Blue eyes took in all of the surroundings, the faces and eyes surrounding them, the descending darkness.
.......No one standing.
.......No one with the courage to.
......."It's over... it's over for us all!"
......."We'll never stand a chance against them!"
.......No. The Captain pulled himself up, teeth gritted as a low growl rumbled from his throat. Somebody - somebody had to stand up. Somebody had to create the spark to ignite the light, the fires of their hearts - somebody, somebody! As Mattheis scanned the allied forces for a face that was not desperate, a face that was not crying out in despair, especially out of his own men, he realized: Isn't this what he was born for? The hidden House Hiashin chose only one child every hundred or so years to go out into the world to lead and renew the spirits of the people. To command, as well as serve. To prevent stagnation. To prevent hopelessness. To prevent cynicism. To prevent the unrighteous from ruling. To be a King.
.......I am not a King, I am not a King. But I don't need to be one to know that... The growl became louder and longer as the fury boiled up from his core, from his gut, to his heart, to his throat, to his lips. That these people need a leader! I refuse to kneel before these repulsive Nith scoundrels!
.......The growl finally turned into a roar. "Get up, you!!" The despaired faces finally awoke and looked, wide-eyed, toward the Captain, who was now standing fully upright despite the pulses of aura pressure upon them. "Especially you, Hylravines! If no one else will stand up, it should be you! Have you forgotten the legacy of my forefathers - our forefathers?!" The people watched as he bent down and picked up a dropped Militia spearflag and held it in his clenched fist. He was unsure of how to address the others, the Keepers and the foreigners, but for his people, the words spilled forward. No matter what, he had to try... for them.
......."Over two-thousand years of revolution in our written history, Hylravines! Revolutions of all kinds: The overthrow of the Empire, the First Revolution, the Plague War, the Second Revolution, the Workers' Revolt, the Era of Reform, the Music Revolution, revolutions big and small! All separated by hundreds of years, all different, but all the same in one aspect: Every single one was a struggle against tyranny! Whoever it was, it never mattered to you - you have revolted against the Nith Emperor Alitharn, against abusive corporations and monopolies, against your own government, once even against my own House! We are not just the ones who make Revolution - we are the Revolution!"
.......The spear spun in his hand as the Militia's black and gold flag unraveled and billowed behind him in the wind. "This is the same flag that we took on Alitharn's infinite Infected Nith army under in the Plague War! We've done this before, and we can do it again!" Slowly, people started to rise up, weapons drawn and eyes beginning to blaze. Auras began to spark to life - for many, it was the first time - and the shore was beginning to glimmer with sparkling light. The energy was building up both in their hearts and in their bodies; Mattheis drew on this energy, and with his words, threw it back at the fighters and rejuvenated their will.
......."This is to everyone now: That Tower, it stands like a disgusting tyrant, overshadowing us all as it sits upon its unjustly taken throne! So, what do we do with tyrants?"
......."Overthrow them!"
......."Behead them!"
......."Drink their blood!"
......."Rape them up the a** with our boards!"
.......Mattheis intervened to conclude before anyone could question Althalia's reply. "Now - for our fallen comrades, for our loved ones, for everyone important in your lives, show them your resolve!" With a graceful, practiced sweep of his hand and a flash, the Captain drew his blade and pointed it at the Tower. A moment passed for him to draw a deep breath, and then he bellowed:
......."STORM! THE ********! FORTRESS!!!"
.......Combined with Telosia's (much shorter, but equally as motivational) speech, sparks of Aura became blazes of Aura, shining beacons of hope in the darkness of the fog and below the descending forces of Nith. The defiant roars of the Keepers and united otherworldly fighters overcame the screeches of the dark masses, like candles in the darkness - insignificant alone, but beautiful and unconquerable, united. On the tiny island on the face of a world floating along, insignificant in comparison to the infinite Life-Stream, the survivors made their stand. No matter how futile, no matter how small, no matter what... they would fight 'til the very bitter end.
.......Enter the Siege.
.......Using the front line distractions and rolling smoke as a cover, the Militia's Aerial squads shot out like blurs of scales and feathers from behind the ground troops, picking up Keepers, Leonoka, and Jace in their tails and claws and throwing them onto their backs as they passed overhead. With a burst of their engines, Althalia and Ruhalis launched into the sky, joining the aerial formation. Mattheis muttered a quick voice-throwing spell and tuned it to come out of the receivers of the Keeper communication devices and bomber squad headsets.
......."Alright, Saloshins, you've got command of the air forces now! Bombers, reserve your bombs and do not break formation until the carrier flyers get into the Tower - cover the Keepers at all costs!"
......."Copy that, Princey-boy! Let's do this!" Althalia craned her head toward Ruhalis and asked, teasingly, "Y'think you can handle combat Skyriding?"
......."Tch. Think? I can, little sister. Kill count starts now!" The two burst forward to the front of the formation to clear away any airborne Nith coming up from 12 o' clock. In the back, drakes whipped away oncoming Nith with their tails, and the riders fired at the rear pursuers with arrows, guns, magic, Aura, and everything else they could throw at them.
......."One!"
......."Five!"
......."Impossible!"
......."Carve 'em, Ruhalis! That's how you do it! Eleven!"
......."Tch!" A pair of guns were drawn from holsters on each side of the Communicator's thighs, and as they flicked and reversed and darted and carved, a series of powerful blasts blazed from his hands. "Talk about a handicap advantage, you've got a Nexus! Three! Six! Ten!"
......."Nineteen!"
......."Such foolishness. What do you hope to achieve by this meaningless act? Shoot them out of the air." On cue, the Harbingers fired at them from behind. Most managed to quickly dodge the volley, but a few nearby screams confirmed the fall of some of the Drakes and Aquiline fighters.
.......Althalia gritted her teeth as she glanced behind her, watching as a dead dragon and bomber pair fell down toward the ocean. "Way to ruin our fun, dude." She opened up communications again. "Alright, dudes, keep moving! Don't let those punks slow you down 'til we get the infiltration group into the Tower!" As she said this, living vines of Aura lashed out at them from below from one of the Shadowsili, and the entire force broke formation for a moment as the bombers darted and corkscrewed out of the way. Still, a number of the cover troops were caught in the vines and flowers, and it was becoming increasingly more difficult to protect the Drakes carrying the Keepers. Jace narrowly avoided one, receiving a cut on his face as his pilots barely maneuvered away from the pursuing vines.
.......Just then, the vines stopped pursuing them and froze in place as blankets of ice constricted the killer greenery, which withered and faded away. A short series of cheers for Telosia erupted from the Keepers and their pilots, who quickly went into formation once again and continued fighting their way toward the Tower.
.......Down below, Mattheis whistled with amazement at Telosia's handiwork. His doubts about the elf's ability were completely wiped away as he impaled two ground Nith with the bloodied spear-flag and Hiafalzik - he could see now what made her a more than worthy Keeper Junior Captain. Ah, how he wished he had a Nexus - especially something like that. "Absolutely stunning! I've changed my mind; I like working with you!"
.......Standing in the water up ahead with another force of Nith behind him, aiming their weapons at the group, Juriza grinned and pointed his weapon at them, shouting yet another challenge. "Hah! Thought you would slip away, you cowards? Well then. Are any of you strong enough to be my opponent!?" The communications crackled to life again as the bombers cried out.
......."NOW!! Blast those Nith sky-high!" With equal speed and haste, Joshua relayed the message across from him toward Mattheis.
......."Young Hiashin! Now!"
.......He did not hesitate; a makeshift detonator with a red Vylli crystal jutting out of it was whipped out from his belt, and Mattheis did not wait a single moment to tear the crystal from the improvised device with his teeth like a grenade pin. With flawless timing, the ocean beneath the oncoming enemy forces lit up with orange light, and a split second later, everyone covered their ears as the explosions reached the surface, sending up towers of boiling water, blazing fire, and black Nith ink into the air all across the battle horizon. Any of the creatures that were caught in the explosions that weren't immediately obliterated were blinded by the rising plumes of smoke and fountains of seawater.
......."Yarrrgh, 'twas a trap all along, ye Nith scalawags!"
......."Two thousand years of '******** You' in your face, punks!"
.......The Captain grinned. "Ground troops! Forward, onto the ice! Amphibs, into the water! Don't let them fire at the aerial squads! Move, move, move!" More battlecries rang out as the beach fighters made their way into (or onto) the ocean. Mattheis and a team of veteran crewmen came to a stop next to the foot of the high, towering hill of ice that Telosia stood upon, weapons raised and ready to go at Telosia's signal.
......."Let's de-flower that plant-freak!"
.......Above, the air forces fought on through the Nith storm. Some surviving Nith from below were now firing up at them and there was still the aura pressure that was holding and slowing them down; it was difficult to keep up at this pace. Althalia looked on to her teammates and Jace behind her - somebody had to go down and handle the seaborne Nith and Juriza. With a nod to finalize her resolve and a sideways flip, she broke formation and dove down toward her fellow Hylravines and the enemy in the ocean.
......."Sis, what are you doing?! Get back here!"
......."There are hardly any Keepers down there to handle Juriza - the Amphibious troops'll need all the help they can get against that dude! You've got the aerial forces now, alright?!"
.......A sob could be heard through the communications devices. "You stupid b***h! You'd better ******** come back after this! I won't see my little sister die!"
......."Tch! I should be saying that to you, man! Take care of my teammates!"
.......By the time she neared the surface of the water, Althalia had already dropped hundreds of feet, and when she descended upon a line of Nith, she carved through like a bolt of lightning, leaving a golden, trailing afterimage and cleanly sliced sharkbait. Still maintaining her momentum, the Skyrider circled around Juriza with great and dizzying speed, though her confidence only barely allowed her to push herself up under the physically and mentally crushing pulses of the pirate Shadowsili's aura. A team of shark-like water Drakes popped their snouts out above the water behind her to back her up, a few gurgling and hissing battlecries, others still crushing Nith between their jaws.
......."Surf's up, d**k! You're gonna get the wipeout of your life!"
....... Mattheis turned his head and smirked with appreciation at the... feminine-looking red-headed boy(?) that approached them. "Well! At least someone agrees with my method of war." The boy then proceeded to ask them about what'd happened the previous night while he was out and about Hale.
And sailing upon this ship of blackened steel......
You and I fly forever free, never to kneel........«
