Vorlander had settled in quite well into Elysia after buying his home, he had furnished it from Elysian stores which had earned him quite a bit of respect from members of the court. It was quite homey, a large space but he had outfitted it with wonderful pieces he thought created a home. He was comfortable here now, Elysia was certainly a happy place.

He was in the middle of deliberations with several of the public work directors when a raven arrived for him from Princess Verity of Hackathorn. He was in the castle in his office when it arrived, which made things easier for him. He read it quickly and his face paled, what a catastrophe. ‘Excuse me gentlemen but I am going to have to reschedule this for tomorrow. A situation has arisen that needs to be addressed.”

The men nodded and headed out the door, whispering as they went. Verity explained that the Royal Family had been robbed and she wanted her inheritance to help cover the costs. Her parents had created a Trust Fund for her in the past and has used him as a mediator for it. He had helped invest the money and it had grown to a considerable sum. Not enormous but enough to ensure someone would never want for anything for the remainder of their lives. Immediately he wrote to the bank in Hackathorn the trust fund had been set up with and ordered the lump sum be delivered. He wrote a second letter to Verity personally,

Your Majesty,

The trust fund is being released to you immediately. Furthermore as a show of my personal good faith I hereby grant you full custody over my businesses in Hackathorn and transfer control of them to you. Also, I grant you executive power over the accounts I have established in Hackathorn, use them to replenish your Vaults. If there is anything else I can do, please do not hesitate to ask. My best wishes to your brother’s recovery.

Vorlander Solaris

Councilman of Elysia

After he wrote the letters he went straight to the Queen’s study and knocked. He was ushered into her office and laid Verity’s letter on her desk. “Your Majesty. The Thornias Family has had their Vault emptied by thieves and Victor Thornias is in a coma from trying to stop the thieves. I have done what I can personally to help them, I wanted to inform you before exaggerated rumors reached you first.” He stood back and waited for the Queen’s response.

“I never said there wasn’t any more to that chastisement…Let me see if I can remember it correctly…Oh yes…Who jumps in on someone else’s fight and doesn’t make sure to hit everyone over the head with a big stick first…” He chuckled… “And she did just that. The girl is a lunatic. But an honest one.” He winced in sympathy when she hissed and flinched at the pain. He felt just awful and couldn’t help but feel guilty all over as she spoke.

“Well, your father didn’t disown your brother and beat you into forgetting him, did he?” That seemed to not sit quite so well with the woman…But it was all in the past…In truth…He wouldn’t have regretted beating his father to death, but… “If it’s any consolation, I wouldn’t have beat him to death…Just until he wished he were dead.” That got a hesitant grin.

“Of course, a young woman needs to eat. And I’ll happily feed you and write the letter for you.” He gestured to a servant. “Please have a meal prepared for Miss Avalon and myself in a private dining room. Whatever she likes.” He smiled to Serah. “And please make sure there is stationary so she may dictate a letter for me to write to her parents.” The servant curtsied and made her way out. “They’ll fetch you when it is ready and I’ll be along not long after. Just let someone know if you need help getting ready. I’ve better go get my head stitched up before my brains start to leak out.”

He chuckled and gave Serah a bow before he went to let the doctor poke at his head with a needle.

She surprised him, but he went along with it for her. The girl was wrapped up again, this time warmly, and he left the blanket to face the cold in getting his clothes back on. He still had to go ahead for help. Bernard buckled his belt and scooped up his axe. He left Betsy with the injured girl, and the other one woke up to keep watch, for him to go off safely to Neverspring in search of some charitable aid. "I found two people injured on the beach. Can you spare anyone to help them?" he asked of the guardsmen at the gate.

They looked at each other, and had an exchange of words he didn't quite understand. "We will send someone." He reassured him they would be there as soon as they sent word to whoever it was.

"Good. I will be down there with them until they come," he said and nodded, turning around on his heel to make the trek back to their little camp. Bernard made his return faster with the news that help was on its way. He jogged to the fireplace and the woman who had... done things. He stopped and plopped down beside her. "They're coming."

She looked up when the servant announced that Councilman Solaris needed to speak with her on an urgent matter. When he set the letter on the desk, she picked it up and read through it, worry settling like a dead weight in her stomach…First the murder in Acaelus, then the last two Kings of Montarra had died-causing rumors that the Kingdom was cursed by the gods for some reason, the civil war in Noveria, and now Hackathorn…

She didn’t say anything, but took out her stationary and began to write a letter to the College of Healing, asking for a specialist in such matters to be sent to Hackathorn to assist with King Victor’s recovery, if there was one to be had. She would pay for it out of her own allotted stipend, the same one that had accumulated since she had taken the throne…The same one she had paid Master Courtney out of for his service in bringing Portia and the Stones…The same that she was paying for those gifts she asked of Master Acaelus and to pay the remaining balance of the sword meant for Brookelle…She usually put a good portion back for a rainy day, and it was definitely pouring…She also asked that a team be put together to determine what it could of the plague and if they thought they could help with that, she would discuss it with them.

She signed and sealed the letter, addressed it, and set it aside. Then she pulled her account book from the drawer and looked it over… “I can’t send her actual money, but if there is some way for a job creation project to come about, I can allot funds for that. The people of Elysia are cared for, but it takes a great deal of careful planning, as you have learned. I’m not overly familiar with Hackathornian economics. If you would like to take some time for the public services and help come up with something, I’d greatly appreciate it. I’m going to ask the College of Healing to send a specialist to help with King Victor if they have anyone available, and that they put together a team to look into the plague…If nothing else, they may have information on how to contain it if not cure it…Something a little more humane than killing everyone.” She made a face at that and shuddered before she sat up a little taller.

“Is there anything else you need to discuss?”

He slept so well, it was as if he were dead. No dreams or nightmares had haunted him. Vaughn simply woke to the realization that he may face the rejection and damnation once more in reality. He wiped his eyes, carried his sword and very small change of clothes. He donned the fine fabrics of a prince. He was Thornias again. For now. It would only last so long before they were made to eat iron.

Verity was outside with a man accompanied by a wolf. "Who is that?" he asked and pointed to the uncertain-looking man.

"He's mine." She answered, climbing onto her horse.

"Mine what? Pillow?" Vaughn mounted his and followed. The man came as well.

"Mine. That's all you need to know," she stated and the wolf barked. "She's mine too."

He stared at the wolf, then looked up at Verity. The Queen Regent as she led them to fetch Angeline. "I guess we're getting mine too..." he muttered. They traveled out of Venereia to Saylorhaal, the closest to find themselves a ship that would take them to Rochford.

“I can manage both your Majesty. I allocated my company’s holdings in Hackathorn to the Royal Family to help alleviate some of the crisis. But, if I may, I would suggest tightening security around your Vault. If Hackathorn has been robbed, it may have only been the first. He still had a number of details to sort out but everything would be in the Thornias name by the end of the day.

At her question if she wished to discuss anything else he did have something in mind. He pulled out a write up of an idea he had about the winter months. Your Majesty, I have been thinking about your suggestion for concepts during the winter months. Currently I am building several large forges using the people of Elysia to build them. They are being paid by my company and I have generated several hundred jobs at the moment. They are rather large buildings you see.” He grinned sheepishly at the Queen, he didn’t like to brag… much.

I would like your authorization to create a training course in blacksmithing for the people. My company would train those that are unemployed and give them employment once they are finished their training. In addition I would ask that you give it Royal Approval and assist in aiding the constructions costs by thirty five percent. I will take care of the rest.”

You may call me… Commander.” He said with a sly smile, it was also the name of a popular children’s toy series in Noveria. Or simply, Baron.” Of course he wasn’t going to use his real name. In the terrible event that somehow the Prince were to escape, he needed to make sure the Prince knew next to nothing about him. And technically, he was a noble…

I wonder your Highness, if my kidnapping you was a blessing in disguise then if you don’t love her. Perhaps I saved you from a life of misery in an unhappy marriage. Although, I wonder what your mother would say… perhaps I should see if I could trade in a prince for a Queen…

He let that hang in the air and then stared at the boy. He wasn’t going to give the boy anything more than he needed to know. But he would play word games all day long, he so loved them.

Rosalia squeaked when he picked her up, honestly not expecting it, and when he set her into her bed, she wiggled a bit, looking up at him with an amused expression. "I will," She said softly as she shifted under her blanket and brought her arms out from beneath it, turning on her side so she can look at him, a black curl falling in front of her eyes. She let out a small little laugh when he told her he better not catch her reading.

"I'm a bit disappointed, Eliias. You would think you'd be able to catch me at it?" She teased silently, though, she could feel her favorite book under her own pillow. She certainly wasn't going to tell him about it, though. When he left, she waited for a few moments before reaching beneath the pillow and tugging it out, and opening it to the part she was at before all this had happened, before she was roused to be told her brother was dead, before she was put into the throne, before all of this.

And when she started reading, it was like none of it had ever happened.

She read for three chapters before her weariness set in, and she marked her page with a beautiful green and gold ribbon, and placed the book back beneath her pillow, smiling slightly to herself. For, as she drifted to sleep, the book had a slightly new meaning to her, and it was the comforting thought of that which helped keep her sleep a restful one.

Hours later, when she awakened, stared at her ceiling, everything sinking in. Her brother was gone, and she was queen. But, she was not alone. Not like the past few days. She swung her legs out of the bed, and had her chambermaid go to fetch Eliias, before getting herself dressed into a simply blue and gold gown, as she did not feel the need to be so extravagant now. She then turned to the pile of books that sat on the floor, and began to pick them up, stacking them in her arms as she moved about, keeping herself busy until Eliias came.

"Yes, Baron. Because I would much rather be beaten into a submissive little slave than marry and bed a beautiful woman for the rest of my life. Just because I don't love her doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy ******** her." He said it as sarcastically as he possibly could. "You've most certainly spared me from a life of misery." Yet again, more sarcasm. "I'm not sure if you are cleverly sparring with words, or if you are choosing them poorly, but nevertheless, I find you fascinating. Were you not making me a slave, I would even venture to say that you and I could have been friends.

"But alas, these are the circumstances."
Kelevra set his head back against the ground and stared up through the boards, catching what glimpses he could of feet and clouds and sunlight. He was going to ignore the remark about exchanging him for a queen. It wouldn't do, and he would rather put himself through whatever torment was coming than have his mother go through it.

He looked up from his mortar and pestle as the Kalos knocked to get his attention. They were not allowed in his workroom, and they knew it. “Yes?”

“A guardsman came and said that a man requested aide for people he found on the beach. They were under the impression they needed a Healer, but the Healers are all busy. They instructed the guards to come here. The Heiros instructed me to fetch you and tell you to get all of your gear because they were obviously too injured to come to the gate.”

He nodded and washed his hands before he started getting things together. They were found on the beach, so he grabbed things against wetlung, and other various illnesses and ailments that could come from water… “Blankets, clothes, warm ones. Make sure someone gets braziers for hot coals and set water pots in it to heat on the way. Some simple fare. I’ll need a dozen Kalos to help me.” The Kalos bowed and walked out.

A short time later, their little procession of thirteen were walking down the beach, searching for the man who said there were those who needed aide. They found him and his mean little shelter, along with a sheep, a conscious woman who looked near freezing and--- “Get the woman hot tea, the green bag of herbs.” He handed off his bag of medicines so that the Kalos could follow his instructions. He looked to the two who were conscious. “I am Armand Kirahan, a Jaryas of the Temple of Beshala and Ushara. These are some of the Kalos from my Temple. We were sent to help. Your friend…” He looked and shook his head. “Make the shelter more secure against the wind and I need a partition.” He ordered the Kalos. The way the girl’s wet clothes had her covered up…She was obviously modest. His training as a former Kalos and a Jaryas let him know that much. The sheep…He had a Kalos take it to the man and woman.

“Madame, if you would drink the tea, it has several herbs in it to fend off illness from the dunk in the ocean, and it will be warm. My friends have some clothing, dry and warm, if you’ll have it. They can put another partition up so you may change. They will also fix you something to eat…Would you like some warm porridge or broth?” She nodded, huddling close to the man next to her, but her gaze flickered to the girl who looked far better than she was… “I’ll do everything in my power to help her. I swear.” With that, the dark blue partition was placed between the others and he and his patient. He quickly stripped the blanket and wet clothes from her, noticing more than a few bruises…He took clothes and drapped them over her to protect her modesty and set to work on her wounds…

“Whoever sewed her up did a good job.” He said so the others would hear.” He ordered some of those who came with him to help him get the girl cleaned up and he set to the task of keeping her Soul from being consumed prematurely by the Devourer.

Never make assumptions your Highness. You and I might turn out friends in the end. If your buyer does not make full payment, well your training will be refocused into different aspects. I am an opportunist, if the opportunity dies, so does my interest.” He didn’t mention the fact that Kelevra may follow suit, it all depended on the situation at the time.

Donovan was not willing to spill royal blood at this point, he may be a monster, but he understood necessity. If the day came he was ever before an Acaelus tribunal, kidnapping was a better charge than murder. Although the fact that it was a Crown Prince may not have helped…

On a separate note, you seem to understand this game better than I anticipated. You do your training credit your Highness. I must congratulate you on that at least. Although your reactions are woefully inadequate…” The boy had much to learn, being a slave wasn’t terrible, there were good aspects to it. He would be trained in muscle control, levels that assassins were taught to help with their reflexes. Slaves needed to serve, but they also needed to be able to kill if necessary.

The trip to Rochford was uneventful, although they seemed to be racing the clock again. Vaughn was oddly quiet, although, Astaroth really had never met the man so he didn’t have a past to go on. Verity was impressive, constantly taking charge of the situation and giving orders that were clear and concise. Apparently she was dropping the crazy act after all these years.

Along the way she got a letter from a someone, something about a trust fund. It made her happy and went some ways to help her relax that night. They were talking a lot more openly as they traveled, and Astaroth’s feelings towards her only got stronger. He knew that he wanted to never leave her side again, she was everything he wanted.

Two days later after Verity nearly killed the captain of their ship for not going fast enough they arrived on the shores of Rochford. But, Verity being Verity, immediately set the pace again and they were in Morden a day later. He had to hand it to her, she could really motivate people when she wanted to…

As they dismounted his horse decided to book it to the nearest water bucket, Nice going, if you made them go any harder Morgan would have had a free dinner…” Morgan barked happily and panted as she made her way to a water trough, she was as tired as the horses…

"Pardon me if this seems like another assumption, but I am no typical person. I am a prince -- or was, rather -- so I imagine that I won't be a typical slave... What will I be trained to do?" He hadn't decided whether or not he would go along with the Baron's plot in order to fool him into believing that Kelevra would remain obedient in order to spare himself physical pain, or his life. There was also the option of being difficult, and constantly trying to escape... But for now, he was shackled to the ground, so he wasn't about to entertain thoughts of escape just yet.

From the sound of what the man had said, it sounded like Kelevra could be trained to do more than just work, and he wasn't entirely against learning a trick or two that he may one day be able to use to save his own life. Kelevra sat back up on his elbows, as far as he could until the the chains went tight... He pulled against them just a little more.

"I don't know the extent of your kindness, Baron, but if you would be so kind, I would like to be able to sit up. Resting on my elbows hurts my arms and back, and craning my head to speak with you hurts my neck. I ask only for enough slack to sit straight up."

She was not apologizing for the pace she was setting. She had a lot of problems to deal with, and she only had a small window of opportunity to minimize the damage. No one was stupid enough to complain. When the animals had enough, they rested. If they weren’t smart enough to do the same, that was their problem and no one wanted to risk an appearance by the Crazy Verity, so they kept quiet and kept pace. Once they were dismounted, she couldn’t help but grin at Astaroth’s comment. “I’ve had enough hard riding over the years to know how much whatever I’m riding can really take.”

And that was the end of the banter. She turned her attention to her brother. “Come along.” She said and started up the stairs…The guards had been shocked to see who it was that had dismounted and approached. “Please inform Their Majesties of Rochford that Verity Thornias, the Queen Regent of Hackathorn, is here to seek an audience with him.” They looked like simpletons the way they were staring at her. She stared back in a way that had them stepping aside so she could enter into the King’s Hall. King Rock was sitting on his throne and looked more than a little surprised to see her. She gave a curtsy with all the same grace as before but all pretense of her not being all there in the head was gone. “Your Majesty. I’ve come with tidings of great sorrow and great joy…”

She quickly explained what had happened with the theft of Victor’s vaults, and what had happened to Victor, his presumed death, and her discovery that he still lived, though he was unaware of the world around him. “And I understand that my brother’s divorce from Angeline caused quite a scandal for you. He offered her what he thought appropriate. I’m here to make amends. May my brother Vaughn speak with her about my proposal?”

“Summon Lady Angeline.” The King said to a servant who quickly hurried away. Verity wondered why the King looked so annoyed, she thought she’d been very pleasant. Perhaps he was angry she didn’t bring him a present this time? Well, she’d been in a hurry…And he was married, he shouldn’t be staring at her corsets…

Rose wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, shaking hands fumbling with the leather back at her hip as she struggled to find the salve she had. She placed the container in her lap and reached down to her shirt to tear it off. It wasn't clean, but it would do. She'd have to wipe his face in order to bandage it... and it was horrible. "Oh, Gore. I'm so sorry." Rose apologized like it was her fault, hands red with blood and cheeks wet with tears. He wouldn't be able to see out of one eye ever again. It was the best she could do to apply a salve to numb the pain and wrap it in a bandage to stop the pus and blood from leaking down his face.

She had to crawl over his chest and straddle his ribs in order to fix his cheek. She didn't know if he had enough skin to sew up, and stitches would amount in great pain. Still, she felt a little scaring and a little agony was worth it. Rose smiled sweetly as she pushed his arms under her knees. "This is going to hurt worse than Hellfire, my darling," She said, trying to be as soothing as she could as she brushed a hand gently over his uninjured cheek. "I'm going to do my best to numb it. After that, I'm going to stitch it up. Please don't squirm too much, and don't hurt me. We don't have much wiggle room on this boat." Her voice was shaky, but kind. She'd had hardly any time to get over the shock of it all.

Rose's wrists were red from the ropes that had rubbed at her soft skin, and it was a pain she remembered greatly. She was not concerned with herself so much as she was everyone else.. but when it was all over, she'd look down at those wrists and she knew it would be an all too familiar burning to her.
