Jacob Griggs

"To be a stalker means to be a ghost, means you can't be seen...even if you are heard. Don't let this training fail you up there." --Major Perlman, Jacob's mentor.

Jacob Griggs didn't think about much of anything except running. The group he was with was good so far, evading the raiders and avoiding getting shot, but he knew they didn't know where they were going and he was well aware he didn't either. If they didn't catch a break soon, though, it might not matter. The raiders closed in, shouting as they spotted the group and Jacob was pleased to see their shooting was as good as their running. He raised his Galil himself and fired off a few shots, if anything, to keep the raiders back. He wasn't sure he had hit anything, it didn't matter as long as they kept their heads down.

But the situation only worsened when blind dogs joined the chase. Jacob didn't like them, but he noticed the other man seemed to have more trouble adjusting to their presence. Even so, the man handled himself well, whatever the cause and before long, the pack was either dead or running. The stalker didn't even bother shooting that time, they all moved a little faster to the trigger than he did. Jacob heard engines revving as armed vehicles sped down the roads, just keeps getting better and better. He didn't like technicals, it was hard enough to shoot a moving target without them being protected and armed with heavy machine guns.

Eventually, they moved into the alleys and Jacob made himself useful. The zombies had all mostly moved to the open streets thanks to the raiders kicking up so much noise, in fact, the stalker should probably thank them for it. Now they would be swarmed instead of him. Even so, the alley ways were tight and some of the creatures were still there. He made short work of the few who looked like they would get in the way, bashing one across the skull with the butt of his Galil and snapping a quick shot into another one before moving on. Soon, the chase was over and the whole group stood, catching their breath, in their temporary hiding place. Jacob took up a position at the opening they had just left, weapon raised and at the ready. He saw the man collapse against a car from the corner of his eye, but he didn't take his attention off watching their six. He'd let the others in the group deal with it, after all, they probably wouldn't trust him and Jacob wasn't very clean anyway, he'd only make it worse.

The group's doctor made short work of the injury, or as much as she could handle for the time being, but almost immediately afterward, a new problem presented itself. Along with the rest, Jacob turned his weapon to the newcomer. But he let the others do the talking. Looked like some new people, but Jacob could see they didn't pose a threat for the time being, so he turned his attention back to the other alley opening. As he did so, he spoke to Caleb from the corner of his mouth, "Those raiders won't be persuaded to stay off us forever. We should get some place quiet. Save the meet and greet for later."

Why bother to wear a false mask...

Alice ~ June ~ Cooper
Tiger-Lily

Not a sound resounded through the buildings, the streets, or the tree's around the town, aside from some distant gunshots and yelling. Still, this particular part of town was fairly quiet. As a lightly armored figure stepped between shadows, the glint of metallic armor could be seen. The silhouette of a horned figure crouched down in a store, looking carefully around the area. She checked the little gas station she was in for any little traps set up. She knew for sure that she would set up some traps in this place. She was almost done with the entire little building. Checking every place in a pretty thorough manner was how she managed to survive... Even disabling some traps well enough would earn her some nice prizes. She'd managed to disarm a bomb trap or two in the past, later deciding to use it against the dumb a** that it up to begin with. All she managed to find in this shop, however, was a little bit of medicine, some water and a few other 'health supplies.' She scoffed to herself, reaching out to the rack and grabbing up the condoms on it, pocketing all of them into her little pack at her back. These can be motivating...

Moving along, she picked up some medication she could find in the little store. The glass front of the building allowing the light of the day to show into the place. Alice shifted her eyes back to the cash register, and then behind it. Tobacco products of many kinds, though the place was very looted. She wasn't a smoker, and pretty much everyone in the camp had managed to quit smoking who even was one... Still, she could see this being used as something to trade for those that might want to light one up. Anything to give her an advantage, she figured, and pocketed a few packs of cigarettes. Already having a small pack to allow her to travel light that had some things inside of it for her to have a better chance for survival, she was running out of room in her pack. Looking over the rest of the store for a moment, she realized that while the store was mostly looted, that if the rest of the town was anywhere even close to the condition of this one store, then they'd actually stumbled on a little very probably gold mine. The corners of her lips curled up into a little smirk before she looked out of the front of the store, through the glass to the street outside.

Walking outside, she heard a commotion nearby... Well, less like a commotion and more like requests nearby. She heard it coming from a small distance away and so she went to the edge of an alley between buildings, ducking low and looking between them for a moment. She saw another two groups. They didn't exactly look friendly, either from how jumpy they were. It's not like she was looking to make friends, but how hostile people were at the sight of others was always worth noting... When the gunfire erupted, and one of the groups began to run, she immediately grinned widely. The sounds of gunshots. People yelling threats... Even a yell of pain from one of the aggressors as the other group fell back. It got her blood rushing. Time to have some fun. She took note of her own equipment. Some sections of my armor have been purposefully left out so that the metal doesn't clank together when I move, so I can be more stealthy, along with my boots... She quickly moved along the building, staying low along the edges on the opposing side of the building from the others. Still, with movement unable to be predicted, she decided that, for now, she was best off heading out...

She wanted to use the others running away to stalk and kill at least one or two of the members of the chasing raiders, but since she had no idea of their actual numbers, and this could be an actual place they've set up base, she decided against it. First we'll set up our own camp nearby, then I can have my fun. The others'll be pretty willing once they see a little of what I brought back. The amazonian scout thought to herself. After deciding things for good, she merely ran off toward the gas station she was in before, grabbed up a still sealed bottle of water, and headed off out the back of the store. It was time to get out of town and regroup. While doing so, she brought her hand back to make sure of her current extra ammunition for her Magnum Revolver holstered at her side, just incase she ended up needing to use it.

CALEB LOCKE

"The only ones fit to live are those not afraid to die" - Gen. Douglas MacArthur

Ferals? Now that was unexpected. Caleb would have expected thieves looking to rob them, stalkers trailing them for any number of reasons, or even ghouls looking to butcher them. But ferals? Ferals were rare at best, yet a real problem in some places, and while Caleb didn’t harbor the same prejudice so many held towards them, he couldn’t help but feel some measure of distrust towards their kind. He’d seen ferals cut holes through fences, pilfer supply stashes in the middle of the night, steal isolated settlements’ livestock, and even ambush caravans loaded with food using crude (yet effective) traps and weapons. And then there was that feral child he and a group of hunters caught outside a fortified village in Minnesota; encrusted with mud, twigs, and animal blood before attacking them like a rabid dog, thinking they were going to saw him apart at the limbs and harvest his organs like a bunch of ghouls did to his folks after they put him on the ground and got him to talk. However, these ferals were different. They didn’t attack them right away, nor did they run at their sight. Instead, they stood their ground, all while the older one’s eyes told them that they didn’t want to fight, but he’d give them one if they tried.

“Easy there, big fella. We’re just new in town and we’re not looking to hurt anyone. You guys go about your business and we’ll go about ours,” Caleb told the older feral calmly before Jacob spoke up from behind them, telling them they should get moving. The stalker was right and it wouldn’t take much time for those raiders to regroup and begin searching for them again. They needed a place to hunker down, someplace that was at least moderately defensible, and if the place somehow proved to be habitable, someplace they could settle. Black Springs was pretty big and completely unknown to them; and with raiders, ferals, and zombies lurking through the ruins, they hoped they could find such a place before nightfall.

TALIA LOCKE

"Sanity calms.....but madness is more interesting." - John Russel

A cool, dry wind blew through the abandoned streets, causing leaves and odd bits of debris to rustle gently before Talia, taking point with her compound bow, peeked out and signaled for the group to move out of an alley. The group crossed the street as quickly as possible, narrowly avoiding detection from a small group of zombies before ducking into the opposite alley and moving forward past a burned-out pub and several other buildings, all of which were gutted by fire and looked like they were on the verge of collapse. This place seemed more ominous than the others they’d been to thus far, yet instinct told Talia to keep moving, despite her misgivings. She could see a large building across the street from the alley’s exit and Talia pushed forward carefully with her brother, Makoto, and the doc in tow. There was something strange about that building up ahead and the strong scent of grass and the sound of distant flapping (possibly from a ruined tent) made her more curious by the moment. A couple zombies were milling about in the street in front and as soon as the one closer to the alley’s exit turned its back, Talia broke from cover, swiftly drawing her bow while her brother crouched and trained his shotgun next to her.

Her delicate fingers let loose, sending 28 inches of fiberglass and steel towards the deader, its flight a bladed whisper. The zombie jerked forward upon impact, its jaws wide open and twitching while blood trickled between its teeth, all while a single arrow protruded from the base of its skull. Talia quickly notched another and trained her bow as the second zombie turned towards her, prior to letting loose and hitting the deader in the throat as it raised its head at the last moment. The black steel head tore through its flesh and punched through its spine, stifling a scream before it lurched forward angrily, only to fall to the ground, paralyzed from the neck down. Talia swiftly notched a third arrow before Caleb, with two fingers, signaled for the group to move forward. The group systematically broke from where they were, forming a rough semi-circle in the street around the fallen zombies with their weapons trained outward and eyes scanning for threats. Nothing and the group closed ranks with Talia pulling her arrow free from the first zombie and Caleb flipping the second over on its back and placing his boot on its chest. The zombie twitched and gurgled before Caleb pulled the arrow out of its throat and flashed her a wolfish grin. “You’ve definitely gotten better. Care to do the honors?” he asked her before Talia calmly pulled the bowstring back and took aim once again.

“Good night,” she said softly before her fingers parted and the arrow sank in, causing the zombie to fall quiet and still on the ground. Talia recollected her arrows and wiped the blood off them onto the zombie’s shirt before turning to see what her brother, along with Makoto and the doc were all looking at. The wind picked up once again, carrying more leaves past them before Talia, with her coat blowing in the wind, looked up at the large building before them with an eager, almost childlike grin. “Hey doc. What do you think of this one?” It was the Black Springs Hospital, a lone bastion deep within the Northern Red Zone….and one they could claim as their own.

Even though the group of humans didn't attack them it just made Scarlet even more curious. She wanted to follow them despite her fathers protests as he pulled on her arm and shook his head towards her. Scarlet looked towards the group as they left before pulling Brandon along with her even though he wanted their family to get somewhere safe. But they continued to follow them. Taking the safer ways where zombies didn't go. When the normal group had spotted the hospital her father started to glare in their direction. But Scarlet gently patted her dad on the shoulder and shook her head. She walked after the humans and right past them. Brandon sticking with her as she soon came up to the front of the group and motioned them to follow. Scarlet didn't want them hurt even though she was scared of them. After all, one less zombie or dead person found in the street was better then having to deal with the other craziness that was around them.

She stopped though and pointed to the hospital and then pointed to themselves and then the group, then back to the hospital. "There safe. No bad men. Good place. We go there." she said gently before motioning them to follow. This time showing them safer routes then what the regular humans were taking. The two of them had lived in this town for a few months now and know the safer ways to go. They usually lived out in the forests but this place was full of stuff they use to use in their past and since not a lot of people were around it that much anymore they decided to call it home. Scarlet turned to look at the group before motioning them to follow. "Follow safe way. No dead man in safe way. It good." she said gently before Brandon nodded and made sure his daughter didn't get to close to the group. Brandon may not have the ability to speak anymore but his body language said everything he needed to say. Besides Scarlet could understand what her father said just by his expressions. Which was useful in her opinion.

Why bother to wear a false mask...

Alice ~ June ~ Cooper
Tiger-Lily

Alice was heading through the streets, silently going on and on the way she'd come from. She made note of the traps she set up around the area, making sure to avoid them as she went. It wouldn't be hard, she always moved around in this fashion, especially in the woods where it was easy to do so out of town. It was do-able in this area, but not quite as easily. Asphalt wasn't so easy to create the slight pits she might need for leg-breaker snare traps, so instead she would create little alterations here and there. Drains that were near sidewalks would be rigged up so that they could tilt in such a way so as to fall for little blades to stick up through the spots between the metal, even something as simple as rigging up a rug to take the place of a manhole cover could trick some unwary fool into falling to an easy injury or perhaps even death, if the trapper was lucky...

Alice memorized her traps as she went and so avoiding them was easy. Anyone trying to follow her might not have such an easy time. It wasn't too long before she had reached the edge of town and began to make her way through the forested area where her traps there were set up. She began to disarm them and set some materials for them hidden nearby, undoing trip-wire style ropes that were made from vine and tied together twig. Makeshift, maybe... but it did the job. The better quality stuff was saved for when she really had to go to war. Alice thought back to her military days for a moment. Her team... I wonder if the team is even still all together... still looking for me. She thought for a moment to herself, then shrugged it off as she continued to disable her traps safely with her Tom Brown Tracker.

After a good while of moving, Alice came to camp of tents set up. Women walked around the camp clad in anywhere from modern police armor to fur clothes to simple modern clothes. Almost all were very fit looking. There was even the clinking of metal and the clacking of stone as some of them made weapons from anything, heating and hammering metal into bladed weapons to chipping stones into primitive bladed tips for spears and knives. Even still some others were merely maintaining guns here and there. A majority of the women were lounging and relaxing, and others still were cooking and skinning. What few men there were in camp were clothed to the bare minimum and while still looking fit enough, they weren't quite numerous or as strong as the women. They were either doing nothing or being used as pack mules it seemed, while one or two others were seen being lead towards a tent by a leash. Ah. Home. Alice moved to the center of camp, sheathing her Tracker knife and looked around to the others, raising her hand to her helmet and removing it before clanking it against her armored gauntlet to get the attention of the others in camp. The fairly large camp went silent and after being given a moment even some of the closed tents opened up for people to peek their heads out to pay attention. "The town we were heading to that some of our new men were speaking about. The information seems to be mostly accurate. The dead there seem to be at a minimal, if any are there, but that's not to say there aren't other dangers." Some small talking amongst eachother started around the camp before Alice raised her hand again. The others silenced. "I've seen a little of the town and already have spied a couple of other groups heading inside of town. One of them has something pretty valuable we can use..."

Again at this, the group became noticeably more curious, but this time remained silent. "One of'em was wearing a doctors coat. I think one of them's a doctor! If we can get our hands on her and bring'er over to our group that'd be good, but even if not, they could have medical supplies. And even if nothin' else, we'll still be able to just capture them all and have our fun- Oh and speakin' of fun!" She moved her hand down to her pack, reached in and pulled out the condoms she'd pocketed earlier, tossing a few out to random nearby women. "Go have some!" She let out as the others laughed and caught the rubbers before the rest were tossed out toward the others around camp. Alice then moved away from the center of camp to allow the others to continue to cook the animals that were good for eating on their hunt.

Another woman wearing almost an entire swat tactical armor suit aside from the helmet and carrying a rifle that she held over her shoulder spoke up. "A little after dinner we're cleanin' up camp and heading into town to set up." "Make sure you're ready to kill, from what I saw they were trigger happy!" Alice let out before grabbing one of the men that was lounging nearby her tent, one of the two largest in the camp, and pulling him along as she walked inside. She was followed shortly afterward by the woman in swat armor. "Jessica, you been dyin' for any smokes?" Alice let out as she began undoing sections of her armor and setting it into a pack in her tent, pushing the man aside where he fell down and merely stayed quiet and settled himself a bit more comfortably. The other woman merely sighed. "No, I quit." "Too bad... Know anyone that would like to trade some cig's for any favors?" She asked, looking back to the woman in swat gear while removing her own sections of armor. "No, I don't Tiger-lily." She looked back for a moment before smirking "Well if yer here ta join in the fun yer doin' a terrible job gettin' dressed for the part." Jessica just chuckled a little bit, then moved to another part of the tent and started taking off her armor. "Well, besides this, we should go over details. What's the best place near the edge of town to set up? I want somewhere just on the edge where we can set up and stay hidden." Alice laughed a little. "I didn't go through the entire town, I just went through a part of it and from what I've seen, it's a little gold mine worth of stuff. Sure it's been looted a little, but there's quite a bit left. As for where to set up, We'll find a spot. I'll lead the push into town and you do your leader thing and keep everyone all in line. Now, let's think about all that s**t later and get down to the fun stuff!" by this point she'd completely disrobed and moved to pull the still disrobing woman over towards the bed while also throwing a couple condoms at the man she'd brought in before motioning him over...

[OoC: Amazonians ready to roll out on the next post, which will be after a few others posts... The equivilant of a time skip.]

USANAGI MAKOTO

"The best armor isn't made of iron or steel...it's merely staying out of sight or out of range."

- Italian Proverb

Makoto had never seen ferals up close before. He saw their shadows after several cut a hole through the fence and made off with the supplies they stole when they lived in the research facility near Lake Michigan once, but never did he get a close look at them. Now it was his first time and seeing Scarlet and her dad was a lot like seeing something out of a page in Nat Geo magazine, which his mom, during forays into the wastes used to find for him. However, there was no time to stop, stare, or talk to them. Those raiders would come back soon and they didn’t want to be outside when they did. “In that case, lead the way,” Makoto said. For now, they’d follow the ferals’ lead, something never they never thought they’d be doing.

Makoto walked ahead of his group, just a few feet from Scarlet and her dad despite his mom telling him not to get too close. They were fascinating to say the least, though his mom was still somewhat uneasy around them. “Mom, I think they’re fine. If they wanted to hurt us, they would have already done so or at least tried,” Makoto told his mother while stepping over bits of rubble on the street towards the hospital. All the buildings surrounding the place had been razed in an abortive attempt to stem the plague while the tattered ruins of a CDC camp sat next to it. Collapsed tents, leaves, broken glass, and assorted garbage, along with a destroyed ambulance and a couple wrecked police cruisers covered the parking lot while a pair of blind dogs sifting through the debris ran off at their presence. The place was clearly abandoned, though the absence of bodies or fungal clusters left by large numbers of dead zombies probably meant it all was part of an organized retreat, rather than the place being overrun and everyone inside or around it getting killed. The main doors and the ER entrance were also chained and padlocked shut rather than smashed and left open, which lent further proof to that.

---------------

What the ferals said was true. The hospital was “safe” in that zombies, bandits, or dangerous creatures didn’t inhabit it, but traps were a constant threat and the hospital, as they soon learned, had more than its share of them. Getting into the hospital using an old pair of bolt cutters they found was easy, but getting past the traps in and around the main entrance was not. It was extremely dark inside and whoever made those traps back then knew what they were doing. Good thing he’d become familiar with many types of those things while “spelunking” and scavenging without his mom knowing. Makoto, dangling a small lead sinker from a stick via some fishing line while Caleb, Talia, and his mom walked a few steps behind him with their weapons trained and a larger flashlight; crouched carefully, shined a light, set the stick aside, and cut a thin piece of wire hooked up to a homemade explosive device, consisting of an M70 trip flare stuck in the mouth of a 5-gallon jug filled with highly-combustible liquid. That was just the first of many and it didn’t take very long for the group to collect six 10-gauge shotgun shells they found hooked up to six identical pieces of PVC pipe, along with homemade firing pins and tripwires. Someone really didn’t want anyone getting inside the hospital after they were gone and if you tripped one of those, you’d have your shin blown off or your side peppered with buckshot depending on the trap’s angle.

And then there was the “Chinese Chopper,” which was a 150-lb log suspended from the ceiling with a pair of ropes and a trigger, while bristling with sharpened re-bar. That thing covered the final stretch of the hall leading to the hospital’s main lobby and Makoto and company carefully stepped over the zig-zagged wires leading up to the trigger. It was too dangerous to try to disarm at the moment, meaning they’d just have to remember where it was until they had the means to do such or remove it later on. However, Makoto still wondered why someone would put so many traps in just one section. Either the hospital was really worth holding and they were planning on returning at some point or…...a thought struck Makoto...the hospital held something valuable. Something they didn’t want someone trashing or get their hands on.

“We’re in the clear for now, but keep your guard up. There’s no telling how many more traps are around here or just what kind there are,” Makoto sighed momentarily with relief and told the others as they cleared the “Chinese Chopper,” prior to him moving cautiously towards the stairs. They were at a proverbial crossroads. One way to the ER section, another to the lobby and main section, another to the basement, and one more leading to the upper floors. He also spied a map detailing the hospital’s floor plan near a bulletin board not too far from where they stood and after wiping the dirty glass casing over it with his sleeve, got their bearings. “So where to now?” Makoto asked while looking towards the group, back at the map, and then checking his surroundings again. “We could either stick together so it’s safer or we could split up to cover more ground. Either way, it’s your guys’ call.” However, they didn't have all the time in the world. No place stayed safe for long and with those raiders out there, along with wandering groups of undead, it was imperative that they scouted out and secured as much of the hospital before nightfall.

(I'm consolidating the survivors at the hospital. There is also a new post on the first page regarding the hospital itself)

Scarlet kept an eye on the group as they followed the two of them. She didn't want them to get lost or injured as her father led the way through the safe path. She was a little interested in Makoto though when the male told the lady who had patched up the one man that she and her father were safe. She smiled timidly as she snuggled Alora and looked up when her father seemed to turn to look towards her. She smiled timidly and nodded before they finally made it to the hospital. The two looked around before walking over after the group when they bolt cutted their way in.

Scarlet followed Makoto closely. Which had upset Brandon a bit since the male still didn't trust the humans even though his daughter seemed to trust them anyway. When the traps were disarmed or dodged Scarlet walked ahead of Makoto and sniffed the air curiously. Her long red hair folding around her body as she looked around. She then pointed to the direction of the cafeteria. "Papa smell food. Food that way.." she told her father who nodded and ruffled her hair gently. He then looked around the other directions and pointed towards the direction that was the stairs to the second floor. "Ah...papa say...we go that way. He smell something that way." she said pointing up the staircase as the two held onto the pups closely.

When Alora whimpered slightly at the scent of other things in the building, Scarlet quickly snuggled her and petted her to keep her quiet. Alora wanted to explore but with all the strange traps around she knew if she let Alora explore she would probably set off a trap or worse get hurt when studying one. Alora was important to the two of them and so was Fang who kept his sister safe and secure as well as the two of them.

The morning had dwindled away as Caroline followed the ragtag group of survivors through the town. She made sure to keep her distance from the raiders and the smaller group of fleeing Breathers. She watched as one of the men got a wound cleaned by someone that looked to be wearing a doctor's coat and she continued watching as the started moving again, all the way to a hospital. Caroline was good at not being seen, it was lucky that was so when she had watched the feral dogs start in after the people. She hadn't seen so much action in weeks. Still, she was glad she had stayed far enough away that the blind animals couldn't pick up her scent and follow her. She didn't want to be a meal. She was happy when most of them were put down and the rest slunk off, away from the group and her.

Back at the hospital, Caroline watched from a distance as the small group entered the main doors. Caroline decided on a different way. The first door she tried wouldn't budge so she kept moving quickly and quietly until she got to the north side of the building. She smiled, seeing the emergency entrance and tried the door, hoping this one would let her in. It did, not without some effort on her part. She slid in and stood for a long moment, letting her eyes adjust to the darkness that engulfed her. Once she was content that nothing was going to jump out and kill her she started moving slowly and meticulously, checking for traps someone might have set to keep intruders, like her, out. There had been quite a few traps but she avoided them all. On her way through the dark building she came upon a door with the staircase symbol next to it. She stared at it, in the darkness, for what could have been a few minutes. She wasn't sure whether or not she wanted to go delving deeper into the darkness, especially without a light source. Not to mention, the group of survivors could come on her at any moment. What had she been thinking, coming in here? She cursed herself for her curiosity, and wished she had just stayed in her safe little room in the rundown house. These new people were only going to lead to trouble.

"To be a stalker means to be a ghost, means you can't be seen...even if you are heard. Don't let this training fail you up there." --Major Perlman, Jacob's mentor.

Tricks and traps, Jacob was familiar with this concept. Had, in fact, used them himself on several occasions, some of these designs looked familiar, even. Things he had used before. But they were disarmed quickly and, for the most part the hospital was safe, at least for the moment. But the stalker already knew what was coming before the other man said it. Room clearing. Jacob liked to think of it as something more of a nuisance, but in truth it was very dangerous, especially in an unknown location. Hell, sometimes things shacked up in known locations, room clearing was just one of those necessities.

He had stayed silent for the most part, but here he spoke up, "If you don't mind, I'll split off and search the lower levels myself." he said, pointing a thumb over towards a sign indicating the basement area, "If anything's hiding in here now, they'd be on the lower levels by now, someplace dark. I'll clear it on my own, unless one of you is good at staying quick and quiet."

He wasn't trying to be insulting by asking that, it was just pragmatism that drove the question. He knew they were good on the fly and that counted for something, but he had no way of knowing if they could be patient enough to move at his pace. Especially inside a building. The stalker always moved slower in buildings, because of his upbringing over the last decade, he was more comfortable underground.

USANAGI KYOUKO

"Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the darkest valleys.
Look upon them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you to their deaths."

- Sun Tzu, The Art of War

The hospital was defensible and potentially habitable, but at the same time, a potential deathtrap all the dangerous devices the previous occupants set. No one would set so many unless they were planning on coming back at some point and no one would go back to a place like this unless there was something worth coming back for. That stoked Kyouko’s curiosity and whatever was in there was probably in the basement like Jacob said. Kyouko wanted to see it for herself, but at the same time, she wasn’t comfortable leaving Makoto topside with the ferals just yet. “We’ll split up to cover more ground. Caleb, come with me. Talia and Makoto, you go with the ferals, but I want everyone to be careful. We can’t afford to lose anyone. Is that understood?” Kyouko told the group before hearing Scarlet say her father smelled something on the floor above them.

Was their sense of smell really that strong? Perhaps it was, considering her own, along with her other companions’ became progressively stronger after the outbreak started. People, prior to then were predominantly sight-oriented, but as their “regular” environment became more and more dangerous, such heavy reliance on sight no longer cut it and they, as survivors, instinctively came to rely more on their other senses. However, not as much as these two ferals. From what Kyouko understood, they literally lived like animals and as a result, were forced to rely on their sense of smell almost as much as animals.

“Come on, Makoto. Let’s see what these new ‘friends’ of yours think is upstairs,” Talia cheerfully said, quickly getting Makoto in a headlock and dragging him after herself, grinning like a fox and causing him to blush as the left side of his face pressed up against her chest. “Mom! Help!” Kyouko herself chuckled at the sight while Caleb did likewise, prior to a quick weapons check and speaking to Jacob himself. “You lead the way and we’ll watch your back. However, first, I think it would be prudent if we barred the front door shut. That way, we don’t have unwelcomed guests coming in after us…at least not unannounced.”

Scarlet listened to what the woman said before she nodded timidly and let her father lead the way. She stayed back enough so that she didn't lose Talia or Makoto before heading up the staircase as well. When they made it to the second floor the two ferals stood there sniffing the air curiously. Tilting their heads to the side Scarlet sniffed towards the left and Brandon to the right. When the two found what they were smelling to be close by Brandon patted his daughter on the shoulder before Scarlet turned and looked at him. Her eyes staring up at her fathers who had pointed to the right of the hallway. Nodding Scarlet turned and looked towards Makoto and Talia. "Papa say, smell from that way. We go that way." she said gently as Brandon took the lead and Scarlet followed after him. The two stayed close, checking each room they passed.

When they made it to one room though Scarlet sniffed around the doorway before walking in and looking around. Her eyes scanning over what was inside the room. It was a room filled with potted herbs and medicinal plants. Her cheeks blushed happily as she looked through the room. "Papa..these good. We keep we keep." she giggled happily as Brandon smiled and nodded. Scarlet was the best of the two who knew how to use medicinal plants mutated or regular. And seeing such a collection of both types made her so happy. It was obvious in her body language she was happy.

The sight of the many herbs made her happy. Their was even plants in here that grew fruits and vegetables that were safe to eat. Walking over she looked at all the plants as Brandon kept watch at the doorway. Keeping an eye on both the normal human pair and his daughter. Scarlet touched one of the herbs in the plant and sniffed it curiously before her cheeks blushed happily. If she had a tail it would of been wagging happily because of how happy she was. She then turned to Talia and Makoto and smiled happily. "These good for heal. Put on wound, it heal good. So many. That good." she said blushing happily as she spun on her heel and went to the fruit trees in the room and touched one of the mutated fruit. She picked it off and took out her hunting knife before cutting it in half and looking at it curiously. Her cheeks blushed even more when she saw they were ripe. She picked three more and went over and handed one to each of them. She then pointed to the one she had picked and cut in half. "This good to. Eat and make healthy." she said blushing happily as Brandon nodded and bit into the mutated fruit as the juices started to roll down his chin. Scarlet took a bite of one of the halves before she cut the other half into smaller bite sized bites and offered it to the wolf pups who nibbled it happily.

"To be a stalker means to be a ghost, means you can't be seen...even if you are heard. Don't let this training fail you up there." --Major Perlman, Jacob's mentor.

Jacob nodded, the first thing he did was screw a suppressor onto the barrel of his Galil. The second thing he did was sling the Galil and head to the front door, looking for any sturdy thing that could be moved in front of it. He found a long board, one that was used at one point to barricade windows, it was ratty, but it would serve his purpose. He shoved it through the door handles and stepped back. That wouldn't stop anything, but that wasn't why he put it there. Instead, he reached into a leg pouch and took out two clamps, holding them carefully so they wouldn't make noise. he clamped both of the items to the board and let them hang, revealing them to be small bells.

Having completed that task, he moved over to a pair of vending machines, both broken and empty, "Let's lay these in front of the doors, down on their side."

With help, the vending machines were carefully tipped over and then slid into position, blocking the double doors. Jacob stood back again, clapping his hands together. That would stop any curious folks, not from getting in if they were persistent enough, but from getting in without making a lot of noise one way or another. Then, without a second thought to the work, Jacob turned around and headed back down the cleared corridor and toward the stairwell, where they hadn't gone before. He took a breath, he hoped Caleb was good about keeping quiet.

Raising the Galil in one hand, braced across his other arm so his hand was free, Jacob pushed open the door, silently, scanned the immediate area and then slid into the stairwell, looking down. "Gonna be dark down there, let your eyes get used to it before we move in." Now that he was in his element, the stalker sounded more confident, more professional, willing to speak more. In this kind of environment, he was in control.

Caroline stood for a long time debating whether or not she would actually go down into the basement. Eventually, she came to a decision. She would delve into the dark recesses of the basement. She would prefer to get a good look around there, while she hoped the other group would be busy looking around topside. She didn't know just how wrong she was. Slowly and quietly she pulled open the door to the basement and slid between the crack, closing it quietly behind herself. Not knowing where the other people were meant she had to keep the noise to a minimum. Not to mention, she didn't know if there would be zombies wandering around as well. She doubted it since she hadn't spotted any bodies on her journey in but that didn't mean they couldn't all be somewhere else. Like the basement..

She moved cautiously down the dark stairs, sliding on foot down gently after the other, all the while listening intently for the sound of any movement other than her own. She had made it to the bottom of the staircase and had just grasped the doorknob to enter the basement when she heard the door a floor above her open. She heard a voice and her she could swear her heart stopped. She knew it wasn't a zombie. Zombies didn't talk. It had to be the people she had followed here. She froze in place, hand lingering on the doorknob. Soon, her brain kicked into action and she slid back from the door, lifting her feet only enough that her shoes didn't making shuffling sounds as she moved. Putting her back against the wall she made her way to the far end and ducked under the staircase, where she wouldn't be seen right away. She knew this was the time to reveal herself to the others if she was going to do it. So, that's what she did. "Hello," she squeaked out nervously, her voice coarse from disuse. "I mean no harm." She knew where the door was in front of her, she could just make it out the dull glimmer of the handle in the pitch black. If the people charged her she would just have to make a mad dash back to the door and try to find a place to hide or a way to escape before she was found. She didn't think they were unfriendly--they had seemed like good enough people from a distance--but she knew there was still a chance. There was always a chance.

"To be a stalker means to be a ghost, means you can't be seen...even if you are heard. Don't let this training fail you up there." --Major Perlman, Jacob's mentor.

Jacob heard the steps before the stranger spoke up, but he pointed his Galil in the unidentified person's direction for form anyway. He kept his finger on the trigger guard though, his first thought was that this place was turning into a regular survivor convention, the second alerted him to the fact that there was at least one unsecured entry point here in the basement and the third thought was that, once this person spoke, all element of surprise was blown from here on.

This was confirmed by the sound of footsteps coming from some direction down in the basement. Slow steps, careful steps, far too careful to be mindless. There wasn't much time, so with one hand still on the grip of his weapon, he gestured with the other hand beckoning the new woman to come to him, then pointed to Caleb, directing her to stay near him. He supposed there wasn't much point in keeping too quiet now, but he spoke in a whisper anyway, "Introductions can wait, both of you stay right here for a minute."

The footsteps were closer now. Jacob slung the rifle across his back, gripped the top railing of the stairs and nimbly leaped over them, keeping his grip on the railing, he eased himself down, dropped softly to the landing below and then disappeared in the shadows. Half a minute later, two men appeared at the landing, looking up, one of them foolishly shining a flashlight all over the walls. They were both dressed in ratty makeshift fatigues. Mall cargo pants, plain t-shirts. One wore the kind of camo jacket you only saw in a department store, but their weapons and equipment were very real. Jacob took all this in in a few seconds, also noting the yellow armbands they both wore. Each emblazoned with a black skull. Some kind of emblem, but no telling what kind. Could be a bandit faction or just some kids trying to act cool.

The lights washed over Caleb and Caroline and one of the men raised his Spectre M4, whatever their intentions, that sealed their fate anyway. "Who are you?" asked the man with the submachine gun, "Talk now! I don't want---" he didn't finish the sentence, the last word almost drowned out by the cough of a suppressed rifle, loud even in these tight quarters, the man went down by a carefully aimed shot to the head and the second man went down just as quickly. After a second, Jacob reappeared, coming back up the steps, he stopped to listen fore more footsteps, but heard none, then he looked at Caleb, "I guess that takes care of one problem this hospital has at least."
