The State of Things

A long, long time ago, there were humans, and only humans. No one gave any thought to the things that supposedly went bump in the night, unless they were crazy. No one knew about vampires or angels or nekos or any of the other countless species of supernatural beings roaming the night. There were rumors, sure-- there have always been rumors. And up until about three hundred years ago, there were only rumors.

And then, as usual, humanity had to mess things up. In the year 2248, a vampire was captured by police when it was sneaking out of the home of its latest victim. The rest of its nest launched a rescue mission, and soon, the whole world knew of the existence of the supernatural. Once that happened, all sorts of new species were being discovered, captured, and displayed.

But eventually, the captives around the world began to revolt. They begin to organize and form an army. Some joined the army led by the angels and the vampires, who sought vengeance. Others simply wanted to return to the way things were, and sided with humanity. After a long and bloody war, it became clear that things would never be the same. Cities lay in ruin, and the human race was decimated. As punishment, those races that had fought with the humans were enslaved.

Cut to the present day, year 2593. The laws regarding slavery are many, though they are confusing. The only thing the poor know is that they are all targets, regardless of race. The only thing the wealthy know is that money can only buy a person so much time.

Our stories begin in a small shop in the city of Davenford, once the great city of New York. This shop has slaves of all sorts for sale, complete with a room of exotics: those slaves that are so rare or dangerous that simple cages would not do them justice. It receives ample business and shipments of slaves every few days. There is only one question: are you inside the cage, or out?

The State, however, had not forgotten this. When his mistress died, she left everything to a fifteen year old Jackson. Unfortunately, the argument was made that slaves could not inherit property, since they were property themselves, and Jackson was handed down to his mistress’s nephew.

Where his mistress had been kind and loving to Jackson, his new master was cold and cruel. Unable to keep up with the backbreaking labor that his master expected of him, Jackson became the target of frequent beatings, and was eventually sold back to a slaver. Each master seemed to view him as useless, and Jackson stopped caring about the repercussions of his actions. He began to start fights with other slaves, and took beating after beating. After lashing out at another master and accidentally killing him, he was branded with a black collar and thrown back on the market, landing him at The Black Rose. Now, the only things that Jackson cares less about than himself are other people.

Personality: Jackson is calm and rational and rarely shows any sign of emotion. That’s not to say he is cold or unfeeling—on the contrary, Jackson is a very emotional person who internalizes his feelings. He presents a front of indifference, but deep down, Jackson is hurting. He mourns the loss of his first mistress and resents the man who sold him back into the trade in the first place. He is slow to trust and quick to lash out, but if his trust is earned, he is loyal to the end.

Bio: Born to a single mother with little money, he was sold off into slavery at the age of five. He went from one master to another, all quickly tiring of him when he refused to fight back, none wanted the broken Arun, the child who had lost his will to live or fight after being betrayed by his only family. When he turned fourteen, he was bought by an eccentric and sadistic man. He was with him for four years, enduring torture that many humans wouldn't survive. But despite his faster and stronger healing rate, he could not heal the damage done to his eyes on his final night with the man. Then he was sold to one shop a few months back and has yet to be bought again.

Personality: Very loyal and kind. A bit socially awkward and doesn't deal with people to well which is why he avoids large crowds.
Bio:
Shinji is one of the new remaining members of the Corsic race, a people once made from human infants that were mixed with blood of many other creatures to fight for the humans and even helped win their war. After the fighting stopped the Corsics went from Allies to slaves and tools. Most were killed and the few survivors went off the live in isolation. That was will seventeen years ago when the Corsic settlement was attacked. Shinji was only a child then and was captured and taken to be put in the slave market.

At the age of eight Shinji got his first master, though needless to say his master thought the child needed trained, and thoroughly. The boys body was broken time and time again. When he was sixteen his master gave him two things, the first was the information that he was the one who lead the raid on the Corsic territories and even the one who killed Shinji's parents. The second was the blade that cut down his people, but at this point Shinji had no fight left in him and simply accepted the blade as a reminder of his powerlessness.

Two years ago his master passed on and his family sold Shinji off to another slave house, stating they didnt need someone like him because till this point had been used a defense and daily living slave. Shinji just accepted it as a truth and was transported to his new home back inside a cage.

Personality: Noel grew up taking orders from his brother, so obedience is something that has been ingrained in him since birth. He is always quick to jump on any orders directed his way, and never needs much persuasion before doing as he's told. It's almost as if he lives to be told what to do, which is mostly true. He received the most reward and emotional acknowledgement when he just did as he was told.

On top of being extremely obedient, Noel is clingy and needy to an extreme. He has a constant need to be told he's worth the emotional effort someone exerts on him. Some might find this annoying, which only makes him more attached to those who accept this in him. Because of the possiblity of abuse his submissive allows, he can become defensive when first getting to know someone, always looking for a way out. It does not take long for him to warm up to someone new, however, and this defensive facade quickly fades into affection and endearment.
Bio: Born a lycanthrope (human mother, wolf father), Noel begged for physical attention from his mother. This eaily made him a mama's boy, something he never once resented. If anything, it only made him vie for more attention from her, doing anything and everything he could to please her and make her love him.

Noel grew up the baby brother to a much older Lionel. Leo resented his brother from birth for being born a monster, and this hatred was apparent to everyone except for little Noel. The young one followed his brother around, always on his heels hoping to step in the man's footsteps. It was easy to tell Noel idolized Lionel, and even easier to tell that Lionel took advantage of this.

Often times Noel would take the fall for something awful Lionel had been at fault for, such as sneaking sweets or stealing money from their mother. Eventually the crimes grew larger and more sinister. It was no secret Leo had gotten involved in criminal activity at an early age, but Noel still worshipped the man. A large heist planned by Leo and a few friends of his went awry, leading to their capture. Noel took the fall for all of it, ending in his eventual enslavement. He has no regrets, and hopes to one day be free to be with his brother once more.

Because she did not communicate with the scientists, they did not really know what frame of mind she was in, or her attitude towards humans.

Bio: Adam has had a rough few years. He has wealth, power, influence, and servants, but there has always been something missing from his life. He thought it was sex, but after countless nights with countless servants, he knew it wasn’t that. Then he thought it was his father’s love, but he found that he couldn’t win that from the cold angel that had fathered him. Unsure what it was that was missing in his life and full of anger, Adam ran from the home he once knew.

This was a bad idea. Adam was captured by slavers almost immediately after fleeing his father’s mansion. When they tried to ransom him back to his father, they’d received money and a thank you note for taking Adam off of his hands. After two years of abuse, a nineteen year old Adam escaped his cruel master and returned to his father’s home.

Now, three years later, no one has seen the elder Ciardha since his son’s return. Adam avoids all questions about his father, preferring to drink and claim that he has no idea where his father is than answer probing questions.

Personality: Adam can be quiet and calm one minute and explode in anger the next. He does not speak about his time as a slave, but it has clearly left scars on him, both mental and physical. He understands what his servants have been through, and sympathizes with them to a certain extent. However, he does not tolerate disobedience. He drinks to suppress his past and deal with his inner demons.

Connecting to things is much easier for him to connect to people and having been sheltered for most of his life, he has difficulty understanding the troubles of others.
Bio: Lucien grew up in an old family, the kind that had been wealthy for hundreds of years. They’d managed to stay out of the destruction all around them, mostly through bribes to officials. His family’s estate where he grew up was walled off and he was never allowed out for fear of his safety but he was raised well and taken care of. In a way it was a dream land and he didn’t realize that not everyone lives this way until he was in his teens.
As he grew older Lucien learned more about the world and how people suffered but that only caused him to stay away from those who did not have money and insulate himself against danger. He now lives on his own estate, smaller than that of his parents but practically a palace to a normal person. Already he has made some sound investments, securing his place in his family.

Very direct and honest. A bit socially awkward as he isn't around people much. He is kind and rather laid back. He avoids conflict at all cost unless it comes to his business.
Bio:
Declan was born a bit of a child prodigy, at least that's what everyone called him. Growing up and was just him and his young mother, his father was the skip out type. Declan was noticed very quickly by his teachers when he seemed to not even have to try in his classes. Finally in second grade they tested him for advance placement, though no one expect the young second grader would skip grades to make him a middle school student. Needless to say the young man was a bit of an outcast, though he tried not to pay it much mind. Graduating from high school at age twelve he went to MIT on a full ride scholarship said to be for extremely gift individuals. He graduated, summa c** laude, three years later with his Masters degree in computer engineering and business. Shortly after he graduated college his mother got married and Declan got a little brother and sister. Deciding it was best he let his mother enjoy her time with this just starting family he moved away to the city and started his own company. Now he is one of the top names in computer software and programming with just over three hundred employee's. He has recently decided to get a slave since despite him being a intellectual genius day to day tasks for hard for him and his busy schedule.

Bio: Averi was born into slavery but his masters weren't the cruel type, they were rescuers. His parents had been bought and saved by them ad allowed to live freely on the man's large estate. He voluntarily helped out around the estate and with his magic, there wasn't anything he couldn't so. He and his parents were granted freedom and given money to live in relative comfort on their own when he was sixteen. They were even given jobs at the head of the estate's business so they could earn their own money as well. Now, Averi lives with his sons, a set of twin human boys that that had been orphaned, and has decided to start saving slaves himself. Even though he was never treated as a slave himself or had to experience being in a slave shop, he knew that there were many slaves that were and many that would end up with terrible masters.

John spent most of his life as assassin. But now he has earned enough money to retire. Now all he needs is a slave to protect him. Buying a slave may not be the best choice. But it is the cheapest and fastest choice.

Bio: Born into a rich family, Yura always seemed quite spoiled and bratty; she bought all that she wanted, and threw them away once she got tired. She never listened to her parents' advice, and insisted on making everything about herself. It was quite normal for the slaves of the manor to emerge with bruises and cuts after she had thrown a tantrum.
However, roughly five years ago, that all drastically changed. Yura seemed to mature from age 5 to age 32, becoming more kind and understanding. The bruises and cuts disappeared off of the slaves, and they even began to smile a bit. No one knows what caused this change.
She knows both the elder and younger Ciardhas, and in recent years, has visited the younger to chat. She was much closer to him in age, and cares for him like a good friend would. Still, she grimaces at Adam's attitude towards her; he often seemed very distant and closed-off, so she could only guess what happened in those two years he disappeared.

Other Facts: Currently, she keeps four slaves at the manor; Puck, a centaur, serves as her cook. Deceit, a homunculus, serves as her stable and errand boy. Jasmine, a dark elf, serves as her gardener. D'metri, a vampire, serves as her butler. Today, she is looking for a flexible slave, one that can serve as an errand runner, and perhaps fill in for the others in case of sickness or whatnot. She tries her best to see the good in everything, but she gets frustrated very easily when something just doesn't work out the way she wanted it to. When upset she's been known to shut down, doing her best to keep out any other negative influences. She ignores people and problems until they just go away, because that's easier than dealing with something that just doesn't work for her.
Bio: Hannah was born to a wealthy family. Her dad owns a rather prestigious mechanical company which manufactures airplane parts. Because of the exposure, she's a wiz when it comes to the book part of building a plane. She couldn't do it herself for the life of her, but she certainly knows how it's supposed to be done.

Now her parents are doing their best to train her to take over the company. Really, what else is a upper class girl with no valuable education to do? She's worried about her ability to run anything smoothly, and so she is seeking out help in the form of a slave. They will effectively be on the same level as a paid assistant, you know, minus the pay.

Bio: Lady was born with a seductive elf mother, and wimpy vampire father. But she, of course, was a daddies girl and loved him very much, though as her mother more of an attitude influence, she picked up after her. Her mother, though, decided to leave the family for a supposedly better man. When Mr. Blackbird found oil and started his own company, making him more than thrice richer on top of his toy shops, ex Mrs. Blackbird tried coming back, but her father wouldnt allow it (It was honestly the first time he stood up for himself).
Just a few years after, things were calm, especially when her father was on his deathbed. His only wish, for his only daughter, was to be kinder and better, never again like her mother. So as she watched him pass, she swore to follow his words. But, with him gone, so was all his workers. Lady wanted to start new, and with all the inheritance, she kept just one butler for a last run: getting new slaves.

These traits range from heightened senses, burrowing, hunting, tracking, to even enhanced strength or speed if lucky enough. Normally living far from large populations, and also being known as fierce hunters, this race is a rarity to see.
Personality: Rei is seen as a fragile, quiet girl at first glance. She actually is fairly open with her thoughts and the people around her, having a desire to know how others feel as well. She can be playful at times, but also knows when seriousness is needed in a situation. Most find her surprisingly humble with what wealth she has, but most also don't know of her past life either. As a Beast Tamer, she originally should have been stubborn and strong, but turned out quite the opposite during her years in slavery.
Bio: Rei was born into slavery and eventually separated from her family at age six. From then on she was shipped to all sorts of places, trained, taught, and soon sold off. Her first master was cruel. He was quick to anger and he would lash out on her without another thought. A year passed in his manor before he grew bored and she was put up yet again. The next year was spent between various masters as she passed through cities, and arrived at her final home. This master was kind and thoughtful of all his slaves, she being no exception to that. Instead, she was the favorite one after only a month of service to her new master. Days turned to weeks. Weeks turned to months and then months to years in this new home. Four years went by before he died. Just when she expected to be shipped off again as another slave, something wonderful was found. In his will, her master left his home and fortune in her hands with no family to pass it down to, and granted her freedom. First she paid for the release of his other slaves, gave them some money, and wished them luck as they left. Now alone in the manor, Rei grew bored and longed for company. She went to find a slave for herself, knowing it would be a great favor to save one of them from a cruel life in the hands of an abusive master.

Bio: Istra was born into a secretive society of vampires that married humans because they were tired of having no soul. After converting to Christianity, they only needed to drink the blood of pigeons and have Communion once a month. Because of this unusual arrangement, religious conservatives were eager to wipe them all out. Istra was the only survivor only because the man who killed her parents could not bring himself to kill a baby.

Left on the roadside, Istra was rescued and raised by KISS roadies from Dallas, Texas. A full genetic test revealed she had Asperger's Syndrome, so she was immediately enrolled in the local center for children with autism spectrum disorders. Because her telepathy allowed certain insights, she had some control in social situations. Even after graduating with a degree in technical writing, non-verbal social cues and certain situations can be bothersome. After travelling around, she was contacted by her parents' lawyer, leaving her a large fortune. Naive of the vampire ways, she has arrived to set up house as a proper Presbyterian dhamphir, and this includes owning a slave or two.

The Owner

Madam Arda runs a tight ship. She refers to the store as her "little pet boutique" and runs it like one. The conditions for her slaves could be better, sure, but the store is downright spotless. Her wares are well-fed and only beaten when they act out; what more could anyone want? She hasn't even fed on one of the slaves in ages.

While her small stature has been known to throw some off guard, don't be fooled. The last man that thought she wasn't worth respecting woke up in a box in Trinson, three hundred miles from where he'd been the night before! Now, that isn't to say that Arda is truly cruel. On the contrary, she's been known to shut down the shop every so often and let the slaves leave their rooms and stretch their legs.

Arda is fairly lax about who can view what slaves. The doors that lead to the slaves' rooms can only be opened from the outside, but anyone is welcome to head into the rooms at any time. The only exception is the exotics room. Absolutely no one is allowed to view any of the exotic wares without an escort and her express consent. But other than that, Arda really just wants everyone to get in and get out. The sooner masters find what they're looking for, the sooner she can make money.
