xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx1. General Rulesxx
Before we begin, it's important to lay down the ground rules which will form the foundation for how the rest of the roleplay develops. These rules are very basic, and generally remain the same across most roleplays on this board, so I won't delve into unnecessary detail.
The first point of contention is images. For this roleplay, we'll only be accepting character images that are of real people only. Actors and models from period pieces are great resources to draw from for your character, but (period appropriate!) cosplays are acceptable as well. In addition to that, you are free to photoshop or otherwise edit the images to suit your opinion towards how said character should look. Please try to avoid using personal images (as in, taken from the Facebook of somebody who is not well-known) or images that do not suit the time period or setting (such as a character visibly talking on a cellphone or driving a car.) You are allowed to reserve a maximum of one character at once, and reserves will only last for four days. You are free to re-reserve as many times as you would like.
Initially, the maximum limit of characters you are allowed to play is two. However, that can be increased over time or due to special circumstances. If you would like to play a child that your character has had with another non-NPC, please get their permission first. Until then, they will be considered NPCs.
The second topic is post formats. Please do not use text smaller than size 9 or larger than size 12, and do not use colors that are difficult to read either because they are too bright or too light. However, decorational text can be any size and color you please. For images, please do not use any that exceed the width of the page, or are so long they stretch your post beyond what you've typed.
In terms of writing, please write at least three paragraphs per posts. If you're involved in a fight or something similar that relies heavily on the reaction of another non-NPC, then the minimum can be reduced within reason. Please try your best to give your fellow roleplayers a lot to work with in their responses, that way we don't all fall into a downwards spiral of tiny posts!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx2. The Passage of Timexx
Due to the nature of this roleplay, planning battles, starting wars, having children, and throwing events are all highly encouraged. Because of that fact, a strict form of time has to be implemented in order to make this possible. While most traditional roleplays follow a loose sense of time defined by the participants, in this roleplay, time will progress as follows: for every two real-life days, one roleplay day will pass. For every real-life two weeks, one roleplay month will pass. That means that in this world, each month lasts seven days (2 weeks), and each year lasts eighty-four days (24 weeks, or 168 days). This is due to the fact that months need to pass quickly, in order to make roleplaying large-scale warfare or pregnancy possible without it being unrealistically fast, or taking too long.
To signify the end of each day, month, or year, a post with blue font and ornate post style will be made at 12AM PST (3AM EST). If anything you were in the midst of doing gets cut off because of this, feel free to continue it in the OOC thread, or talk with the other person through PM until it reaches resolution. (And then update the rest of us on any significant changes, of course!)

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx3. Leaving it All to Fatexx
To prevent godmodding and help make the roleplay more interesting, the 'fate' system is going to be used. The only time when the fate system is mandatory is during confrontations with another non-NPC character or an animal. In order to make things fair, it's required to use the Post Action "Roll Dice" to determine the effectiveness of your attacks. When selecting die size, please select "6 sided", and for number of dice, enter the amount of attacks you have made. Gaia will then roll a six-sided dice, one for each corresponding hit. To make things easier to determine, feel free to (1) number each hit in your post.
          These are the following numbers which will determine the strength of each hit: 0 - Miss, 1 & 2 - Poor, 3 & 4 - Moderate, 5 & 6 - Hard.
Things that do constitute a hit would be: striking a non-NPC or animal with the hands or a blunt weapon; biting or scratching a non-NPC or animal; shooting a firearm or arrow at a non-NPC or animal; catching, grabbing, tackling, or restraining a non-NPC or animal; breaking free from the restraint of a non-NPC or animal. When restraining or breaking free from a restraint, anything above 3 is regarded as successful. Things that do not constitute a hit would be: jumping, fleeing, or running when not restrained; struggling when restrained; slapping or other non-aggressive attacks towards a non-NPC.
Other optional instances of the fate system include using the Post Action "Random Number" and setting the first number to 1 and the second number 2, to determine the success of a conception, or the survival or sex of a newborn upon birth.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx4. Keeping Things Appropriatexx
In order to meet the guidelines Gaia has set for the forums, it's important to keep certain things out of this thread. Whilst graphic depictions of violence, gore, and drug use are allowed, please do not go too in-detail with sexual posts. While sex and scandal are certainly encouraged, we really don't want to have our roleplay deleted! Because of that, when things get too heated, please take it to PM or agree with each other to skip ahead. You can allude to sexuality and deviancy all you like before or afterwards, but once it gets to the real thing, we get in trouble!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx5. The Importance of Consentxx
In congruence to the point above, we continue into the topic of consent. Consent is very important in roleplays because it prevents people from overstepping their character's abilities. This also coincides with the fate system, which makes it possible to infringe on other character's personal space without it being to overpowered. However, if you are looking to kill or even rape another character, please make sure the other user agrees first. While murder is a definite part of this world and is something we hope to be seeing at some point, it is NOT okay to outright assassinate or take advantage of another character. No, not even with a dice roll. Please just clear it with them first. (However, NPCs, like for everything else, are free game!)

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx6. In Concerns to Your Characterxx
For this roleplay, we've forgone the traditional "personality" section of the profile to allow for character fluidity and development. No person is one certain way, after all - we all have different sides of us that emerge due to different circumstances or environments. Because of this, it's important to be aware of who your character is, and to make sure that they are learning and growing - in one way or the other - from the things happening around them. If you're in search of a roleplay about a happy Prince Charming who marries his princess, I'm sorry to say that this is not a roleplay you will enjoy. Scandalous, cruel, and even ruthless behavior is all supported and encouraged, even to the point of waging war against one another if you so wish.
To encourage this dynamic plot, each family - aside from a select few - have been given a task that they are tasked to achieve for their kin. They can do whatever they please with it - to pursue it, to rally others to their cause, to cast it aside - but would you really forsake your own family?
The families who do not have tasks are the Maughams, the Barringtons, the Wyndhams, and the Somersets. Because these families have to particular allegiance (aside from the Barringtons to the Cavendish), they may be ideal to make allies of. Or maybe not~ Please title your PM 'Fields of Poppies and Blood'
As this is roleplay also centers around the theme of arranged marriage, you will most likely not be the one to choose your spouse. All marriages must be ordained by the King or Queen themselves, so if you would like things to go in your favor, it may be ideal not to cross such powerful figures. At least, not until after your wedding day! The King and Queen are NPC characters who will be played by Surgary Parfait and myself only when they are needed. As they are NPCs, they're free game for any attempts of assassination, though for the first month (two weeks), they are immune to all attacks. To show that you've read all the rules, and agree to abide by them, please highlight the end of the paragraph above.

Before there was creation, there was only destruction. The universe was a great swirling cloud of black dust and emptiness.
For thousands of years, this cloud thrashed recklessly, tearing apart anything that came to form. Within the heart of this storm,
Sower, the creator, was born.
For many years he was trapped within the prison of the raging storm. He created small creatures to give him love and warmth, but all
were destroyed. Sower became so distraught that he began to cry, and from his tears he birthed Inlustratori, Lutum, and Pluvia.
Inlustratori illuminated the darkness before Sower, Lutum formed solid ground for him to stand upon, and Pluvia drenched the black
dust and turned it to clay. As the clay adhered to the ground beneath Sower's feet, the beginnings of the world were formed.
From the clay Sower crafted his finest creation - humans, mirroring his own image. He built a land for them to live, the
Isle of the First Men, and Pluvia surrounded it with her warm embrace, Inlustratori smiled down upon them, and Lutum lay beneath them
so that the were always loved, and were always secure.
The humans flourished under the love of their creators and thanked them by constructing monuments and large buildings to honor their
protectors. What the humans, and the Gods, did not know was that something was preying upon their joy. From Inlustratori's
light came Sower's shadow, and from Sower's shadow came Interitus. He seethed with jealousy and rage over Sower's bright creation,
and could not stand to see such mirth in the eyes of another. He aimed to take it for himself, to become the humans' new object of
affection, but his plans did not succeed. When he pushed Inlustratori from the sky, the world grew too dark to see. When he struck Pluvia,
her body produced great tremors that rocked against the coast. When he slashed Lutum with his blade, he cracked open and the earth
beneath the humans split apart into a great chasm. The Isle of Man began to shatter and fall into the sea, and the humans fled into their
boats and cast off into the ocean in terror. Sower wept great and powerful tears which caused immense waves to strike the ships,
breaking apart the ranks and sending every ship in a different direction. With no sun to see, the humans lost sight of the stars and the shores
and began to pray for their lives.

Surrounded by water on all sides and lush with nature, it was an ideal place to settle. It was then, in the first year of the New Times, that humans began to feel hunger. Sower had forsook them, and now they required sustenance in order to prolong their mortal lives, lest Interitus take them to beneath the soil where he now resided.
xThe ground was worked and tilled for a thousand years as around them, humans began to build a great city, spanning from one mountain to the other. It slowly became clear that there was no longer room to farm, and that another land must be sought for that purpose. An expedition set out, and in 1100 the port city now known as Valencia was founded. Newport and Valencia formed the Union of the Crescent Isles, stating that Valencia was a colony belonging only to Newport and must abide by Newport royalty and government. However, the land there too was not apt for farming, as it was even more mountainous than Newport. Another expedition was sent out in 1200, and in 1215 the Bountiful Continent was settled with its first inhabitants.
xNowadays, Newport functions as the capital for politics and for society. It's known for its grand architecture and palaces, and the expensive fashion donned by the nobles. The town of Newport has sprawling commercial districts, factories, taverns, and brothels, and is mostly inhabited by lower class citizens. The palace of Newport is located several hours away by carriage and is surrounded by lush fields, thick forests, and well-maintained gardens and is guarded by the highest ranks of the Royal Army itself.

Making their money through wit, cunning, and charismatic trade skills, these lower class workers have broken through the glass ceiling and made it as far as the poor man can go.
xValencia now considers itself a rival to Newport in not only size and population, but wealth as well. Valencians view Newporters as haughty and self-important, with no care or knowledge of true hard work. However, the same could be said of the younger generations of Valencians, born into the wealth of their parents and knowing nothing of sacrifice themselves.
xThe city is known for its daring and scandalous youth, who no matter the status enjoy attending rowdy parties, fighting in taverns, and exiting brothels in broad daylight. They enjoy spending as much money as they can get their hands on, drinking until they cannot drink any longer, and conjuring up new slang to slur during such occasions. The fashion is as loud as rebellious as the youth, with dropped necklines baring cleavage, shoulders, and backs of the neck, and hemmed skirts showing the ankles and lower calves. Men enjoy flaunting their badges of war, captain's hats, and expensive clothing just as well.
xThe older citizens of Valencia look down upon this disgraceful behavior, and worry that it may present a bad example of the city they were once so proud of, especially towards their constant rivals - Newport.

It is home to many exciting and learned people, especially scholars and professors who after years abroad have decided to settle down someplace serene.
xAnd serene it is, indeed - the Continent is isolated from the dramatics and political warfare of the Crescent Isles, only encountering it through letters from relatives or the occasional royal decree. Aside from that, it would be difficult to believe the Crescent Isles even existed at all.
xHillford is the expansion of Newhaven farmland that was taken over by commercial and trading districts. Surrounded entirely by nature on all sides, it's a peaceful little town with little much to speak of. Nobles and lower class socialize alike, and maids are treated as if they are extended family. Even the rich tend to live simply here, with plain decor and celebrations in comparison to the extravagant Newporters or the charming Valencians.
xDue to the lackadaisical and nature-oriented lifestyle of Continent inhabitants, fashion is very different here. The preference leans towards simple flowing clothes made of silk, chiffon, crepe de chine, or even cotton, with hand-embroidered flowers and lace details. Inspired by nature, the common colors of dress are soft blues and browns, warm reds, or subdued yellows or lavenders. Bonnets and parasols are a popular way for ladies to shield themselves from the sun, while a nice warm tan for a lad is often desired. Due to the warm and rainy climate, little effort goes into styling the hair as most outings end in a drenching from the rainclouds, or fanning yourself so viciously your hand feels like it may fall off.

Called Tiroedd Garw - Harsh Lands - by the people, it is home to the resilient tribe of Northsmen who are believed to be the second group of ancestors, who were separated by those who would lead on to settle Newport. They reside in An Leargaidh at the heart of the icy land, surviving only by their tough nature and strong community.
xAfter coming across the stranded Valencian adventurers on their shores and helping nurture them back to health, the Northsmen entered into a trade pact with the Crescent Isles and constructed Port Saoidh, which allowed them to trade their much sought-after furs and pelts for new technologies which would help them better survive the wilds. This was not their first trade pact, however.
xWhen the Northsmen ancestors first landed on the shores of Tiroedd Garw, their lives consisted only of misery and death. Many of them died due to the freezing temperatures and lack of food. Hunting was a new concept to them, having never felt the pangs of hunger before. They traveled from the shores deep into the heart of the North, when at what seemed the very ends of their lives they encountered the Rhydd Pobl, the Free Men, who resided in the thick forests called Chartref Mawr.
xWith beautifully sun-kissed skin that contrasted against the snow, and lean, athletic bodies that seemed against all odds, the Free Men shocked the Northsmen into silence. Over time with gentle help and coaxing, they were able to help the starving ancestors learn the ways of the Harsh Lands and how to survive. This, however, came at a price - a debt was made, and an agreement met between the two tribes. They would not infringe on each others territory, and they would not depend on each other to survive. That is the way of Rhydd Pobl, and that is the way of Tiroedd Garw - the strong survive, and the weak give way for the rest.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx1. Addressing Your Superiorsxx
Newport nobility is divided into three tiers:
The Royal family (King / Queen ◁ Eldest Prince / Princess ◁ Younger Princes / Princesses)
The high nobles (Duke / Duchess ◁ Marquess / Marchioness ◁ Count / Countess)
The lower nobles (Earl ◁ Viscount / Viscountess ◁ Baron / Baroness ◁ Lord / Lady ◁ Knight)
Nobles can be moved higher or lower in the ranks at the decree of the King or the Queen.
It is extremely important to address your superiors - and inferiors - in the way that suits them correctly. Male superiors may be addressed with "ser" or "my lord", and female superiors should be addressed as "my lady", or you may simply refer to anyone by their title. Addressing someone with a lack of regard towards their status can be seen as a slight upon them, or just plain ignorance.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx2. Revering Your Godsxx
While most old-fashioned people worship the original God Sower, there are plenty of Gods in this modern day to show your respects to.
The most popular one of this age being Inlustratori, the God Who Returned, who is commonly pictured as the sun with an open eye. Her light reveals all unknown darkness, and spreads knowledge to the people. For devout worshipers of Inlustratori, there is the grand Temple of the Sun located several hours from Newport. With a large tower that appears to almost brush against the skies and thousands of steps to reach the top, it is a highly spiritual and moving journey for those who believe.
Other well-known Gods include Conplexus (familial love or weddings), Foecunditas (ferility and good harvests), Pietas (romantic love), Tentigo (uncontrolled desire or lust), Pluva (the sea and rain), Lutum (nature, animals, and flesh), Corvus (spies and secrets), Morsus (betrayal and poison), Interitus (regret, sin, and hell) Saprus (festering, decay, and time), and, of course, Death.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx3. The Opposite Sexxx
As any proper lady or gentleman knows, it is unwise to become too familiar with the opposite sex, even if you are already married. As feelings left uncontrolled can lead to reprehensible acts, if you do not wish to be debased or whispered about in society, it is ideal to avoid any unfavorable behaviors. Children born outside of the bonds of marriage are not desirable, and parents of said children are often urged to abandon them lest they be punished by law. Moreover, verified cases of adultery may also be punished under the Crown's sole judgement, outside of a court of law.

When famine hit, the Cavendish suffered. When floods came, the Cavendish suffered. When plague spread, the Cavendish suffered. This is something no proud Cavendish ever forgets. But despite their hardships they persevered, with only their motto to guide them - "Destiny, Sacrifice, Fertility." And it was so, for despite the Cavendish curse, they multiplied with alarming speed, and through their sacrifices they achieved their destiny; in the year 1200, Jothan Cavendish was crowned king after successfully driving Alarch the Deathless and his family from the palace, and no other family has had the privilege of sitting on the throne since.

The Maughams are a family well-known for the prolific amount of philosophers, writers, and drunkards they produce. All children born to the Maugham clan are unfortunate and miserable, with little luck or light in their lives to speak of. Most go on to either create beautiful works of art, or waste their lives in society, drinking too much and keeping in the company of ne'er-do-wells. They are never well-liked, and their deaths - either grisly accidents or self-inflicted - are rarely mourned. The Maughams have learned to embrace death and misfortune with confidence and the familiarity of an old friend, thus their crest bears the badge of Death, black as dried blood and emblazoned with the crosses of mausoleum gates, to signify where all Maughams are headed.
The latest in the Maugham family to pass on is ser Walter Maugham, who died of a poor liver. His sole heir, who was not in his custody at the time of his death, has yet to be found.

Little is known about the Sanguine family, other than the fact that they lived in Newhaven until returning to Newport quite recently within the last fifty years. Their crest is as old as their name, bearing the badge of Death in royal purple decorated with Inlustratori's eye, Corvus the crow-God of spies, Morsus the snake-God of betrayal, and the Temple of the Sun. The patriarch of Sanguine sends his three sons who, despite their bright skin and handsome faces, seem to have a displeasing aura about them. It's whispered that they are the descendants of Alarch the Deathless, the ruthless king who abandoned his mortality through supernatural means in order to reclaim the immortal powers the ancestors had once possessed.

The Barrington family, though originating from Newport, now reside in Valencia. Having been the royal family's advisers for centuries, they've now been stationed here to act as ambassadors both towards and for the Valencian people. The patriarch of the Barrington family, ser Whitman Barrington, is quite a busy man, and so it is quite difficult to obtain an audience with him, even if you are his own child. Lady Barrington is just as active, frequently entering into the society of other Newporters or those who may help advance her husband's position. Strong like the sea - the motto of the Smyth family. Once just a young, poverty-stricken boy with only his mother to care for him, Edmund Smyth is now the head of the wealthy Smyth household and name. Using only his wit and charisma, he charmed himself through the ranks of the navy, trading off and profiting from his munitions and rations all the while. Strong-willed and courageous, he's made a name for his family as a tough and unrelenting force, of which you do not want to make an enemy. Ser Smyth constantly pushes his only son to exceed the boundaries of their position, and puts him through expensive schooling and training to make sure of it. It seems almost as if the Hawke family has come into money only by chance. However, that would be an insult to Lady Hawke's intelligence - the sole leader of her family, she has brought her name into fame with ease. Or, rather, infamy? A pirate with a care for nothing but the finest things in life, her reckless ways are what has brought her to the top. Guided only by their hearts, the Hawkes seek whatever they desire, whenever they desire it. It's a surprise that her only daughter, raised in that same lifestyle, is now being invited to the royal palace - the very family her mother spat upon with her actions. He's been to the Northernlands and experienced their hardships firsthand. He's been to Chartref Mawr, where his neck felt their blades threaten against his life. Yet despite having seen and experienced all things a mortal could experience, he was never satisfied. As his children began to grow, he brought them alongside him to these new lands, introducing them to intriguing and sometimes dangerous creatures. His careless love for the unknown endangered himself and his family many times, but their enjoyment never ceased. Now settled in Newhaven, too old to venture as he once had, he oversees a large portion of exotic trades. And with his wife deceased, and his children being sent away, there is little else to occupy his time.

Despite its bountiful gifts of nature, and the wonderous nature surrounding it, the Somerset home was never a particularly joyous place. After the passing of Lady Lillian, the mother of the two Somerset girls, life was often somber. The youngest daughter of the household, who inherited her mother's weak blood and frail composure, was placed under lock and key by her strict and grieving father, while the eldest was free to go about as she pleased. But their rebellious spirits and hard-headed nature could be quelled by nothing, and frequently the two devilish sisters worked together to disobey their father's rules, despite their conflicts of personality. When the Crown's order came, ser Somerset did everything in his power to keep his youngest daughter home, but not much can make the King second-guess his decisions.

Earning the role of leader only by the sharpness of his blade and the strength of his muscles, Goraidh Bràigheach is a man that most not only fear, but love. Helping his people to maintain prosperity in the harshness of Tiroedd Garw, he's treated with the respect any king would receive. His eldest son, the pride of the Northernlands, has been raised with the intent to lead just the same. When a letter arrived from the Crescent Isles demanding his son to be sent and married, Goraidh viewed it as the perfect chance to advance their position, despite his son's hesitation. With him he brings two wards of his family, both Free Men, who were taken in as babies abandoned in the wilds. Raised the same as Goraidh's own children, they demand the same respect, despite their entire lives directly contradicting the saying of their people - Your greatest enemy is your support.
