Riker Saiforro

✓ Thirty-three ✓ Vampire ✓ Owner of the Estate

Riker pushed his feet against the wall of his office and slid his computer chair across the room. The man was just about done with his work for the night. generally he would work all night, but the maids and some of the other staff would frequently stop in to chastise him and tell him to get a hobby. If one more person told him that the computer screen would damage his eyes he would flip a table (not really). The vampire let out a sigh and shifted his crimson eyes to the clock. 9:00PM, time to take a walk around the mansion and property to make sure that everything was running smoothly. Things generally went well around the estate these days, but one could never be too sure.

So it was that he left his office and locked the door, then headed down the corridor to check things out. He checked in on the kitchen first, then the infirmary, the foyer, and then the entire second floor. Afterwards he returned to the foyer and stood there for a moment to take in the sight of the great statues that stood watch there. One lion and one horse. The vampire let out a light sigh before heading outside through the heavy double doors.

The flood light on the front of the mansion lit up the entire front yard, all the way to the garage. Riker took a turn and headed out to the stables. He trudged across the plowed path and then slid the barn door open. Once inside he made his way down the stalls until he found his horse, Ricochet. "How about a moonlit ride?" He asked his companion as he pet the horse's velvety snout gently. Ricochet never seemed to mind going for trail rides in the snow at night. He was used to the vampire's late-night tendencies at that point.

The two of them eventually emerged from the barn. Riker slid the door shut once more and then hopped upon the chestnut thoroughbred's back. With a light kick, Ricochet headed off towards the mouth of the path and after some time the two of them were making their way through knee-deep snow. They used the stars and the moon, as well as the cleared treetops above the path as their guide.

demon

Into the darkness, into the night, a little demon goes. The estate had not seen hair nor tail of the former assistant maid in years. It seemed that once Claw had gone and she had no one to really play around with anymore, she sort of lost her sparkle. By all means, she hadn't been infatuated with the grumpy bat but he had made her time there far more entertaining. After moping about the place here and there, she finally just sort of vanished from the face of the earth. No message. No fair well Timmy since there hadn't been a John to so long. In fact, she didn't even pack her bags. While the house was sleeping, she merely walked out the door and floated her merry way onwards.

There was very little doubt that someone as attention to detail oriented as the great and powerful Riker would notice he shadow of two black wings creeping out on either side of him. The smooth, curved edges spread out but were still and silent. Hovering was done merely with energy, like invisible hands capable of holding her up rather than the use of her wings. This technique was only useful when within about five feet of solid objects. When it came to the sky she'd have to use her wings though she was a sloppy flyer from never going that far up. Her slightly pointed, tan chin poked out over his shoulder and he could just barely hear the child like laughter that always seemed to play in her voice. And while her speech was always higher pitched like a child, her words were low in tone and the breath from them could almost send a tingle across one's skin from how close she was. After all, she was never one to really understand what 'personal space' was.

"Whatcha dooooin'?"

Ricochet's ears perked forward and the horse took a side-step out of concern. He was not a horse that was easily spooked. Riker gave his neck a pat as he watched the shadows that were cast over the two of them. He could not make out the shapes and so he turned his crimson eyes to the sky, just as a very familiar voice chimed out into the cold night air. Riker blinked with surprise at the the sight of one of his former staff members. If he were a human then a shiver would have run up his spine at that moment. "Cosette," he said with surprise, simply addressing the woman by her name. The vampire's mind raced with many questions. What was she doing back on his property? Where had she been all of this time? Was everything okay in her world?

Ever the stoic. Riker wasn't someone that was fun to play with because his emotions were always very well in check. She wasn't old enough or wise enough to be able to sit across a table from him and read his minute muscle twitches as tell tale signs of his mental state. He only gave off enough to let you know the general consensus and that was the end of it. So, there was no childish laughter from her like there would have been if it had been someone else. He didn't have much to say other than her name and that part bummed the infantile demoness out. Lifting up just enough, she moved forward. As was normal, she was in a laying down position and merely shifted through the air with the fluid motions of water, doing a slow and lingering roll over his shoulders and turning so that she was facing him and in an upright position, legs folded and hands gripping her bare ankles. Though there had been only a few years since their last meeting, she was a little older in appearance now despite not aging. Perhaps it was the slightest change in how she carried herself seeming more like a young teenager rather than an older child. Still, she gave him a small pout.

"Just Cosette? And here I gave you the best week of my life. So cold, Sir, so cold."

It was meant to come off as playful and charming as it use would have. However, the tone was not on point and clearly hiding some form of tension underneath. The pout quickly left and her eyes drifted to the sides of them, moving slowly around the shadows as if keeping a look out for something.

"....you still have your shelter?"

Right as she asked it, her black wings tucked in and her tail swayed anxiously into sight behind her. As a twig dropped from a tree some hundred yards away, her head turned completely and missed whatever his initial reaction would be to what he was about to see. At the end of her long, black tail where it ended in a spade...the spade was distorted. It was broken apart, like a pixelated image in the process of being erased. The pieces floated up, disappeared and yet the tail itself did not proceed to vanish...as if stuck on a gif loop. Attempting to touch the end of it, fingers would go right through the particles and would only become solid further down where the tail no longer hand distortion.

Riker could tell by Cosette's reaction that he had not said anything helpful. His lips thinned a bit as he stared up at her. Something had changed about the demon but he could not exactly place it. Sometime looked different about her and felt different as well. His nose scrunched up out of habit (one that he had never been able to condition himself out of). He was about to reply to her when the end of her tail seemed to the evaporate into little colorful squares. The vampire's eyes widened a bit as he watched. The girl clearly had something going on in her life.

"I apologize for coming off as cold. These past few years have been a roller coaster for me and I honestly am just simply surprised to see you is all." He spoke with a genuine tone as he tried to convey to her that he was glad to see her and had not meant to come off as rude. "I do still have the shelter. I just re-opened it last year. The place is fully staffed now, so we should have everything you need and you will not have to work unless you really want to. That is, if you wish to stay." In the past, residents had been encouraged to work while they stayed at Riker's place to help with the flow of things. Nowadays he had hired many staff and the place was as lively as it had been when his parents were still alive. It had certainly helped the vampire feel much better. He had been hesitant at first, but of course all of his parent's old lady friends had barged into his business and insisted on the change. Ultimately, it became clear that it was exactly what he had needed to get him out of that painful slump he had been in for some time.

"As for your tail, what is going on with that?" He inquired as his gaze shifted back to it. "You could have someone in the infirmary look at it if you'd like. Just be careful of the patient in the last bed. He's a little touchy." Riker had not gotten around to hiring a head doctor yet. However, there were plenty of nurses that could do some of the basics, as well as treat some of the more mythical elements.

The apology wasn't met with any real attention. She didn't see the need for it so she didn't offer any real recognition. After all, she was busy shifting her gaze from each gently swaying branch that dared to catch her peripheral. In the palm of her hand, she could feel the warmth of her blood pooling. Cosette didn't mean to call her power forward, but she was reacting out of natural fear. Letting go of her ankle, she flexed her fingers and pulled the droplets back into her skin where it belonged. In the back of her mind she heard him talking about her staying at the estate but it was like a guest there rather than her old position as a maid. A small skip bounced in her chest.

"No, no...that's not...."

Again another stick shifted, a small squirrel bouncing along to return to it's den of warmth. With her hand raised, she shot a needle of blood towards the creature, impaling it through it's head in mid-jump. Narrowing her eyes a bit, straining to see the distance where she saw what it was that she had caught. Curling her fingers, she quickly rubbed the back of her head.

"Wooppsie…"

His question of her tail, brought her back to him though. Almost immediately she tucked her tail close to her body and hooked the tip down into her side pocket once it looped around her stomach like a belt. It slid nicely through the loops of her mid-calf black jeans.

"It's fine..."

Taking both of her hands, she smoothed the woven white sweater down along her stomach as she lowered herself to stand on the ground before the vampire and his stead.

"I don't really need to stay..." A lie. "...I was hoping you'd still have a job here for me. I do miss wearing my outfit after all!" A bubbly laugh peeped out as she tilted her head, tapping a finger against her chin in a 'look, I'm so cute' type of manner. Again it was more of an act than anything else. It was true that she wanted a job at the estate. It's not that she really needed it, but it gave her an excuse to stay. She couldn't exactly get into it what had happened. "But I guess if there's nothing open...." Please have one. "...I'll go ahead on my way." Please don't let me go. Please don't let me go. Even as he was panicking in her head, she turned her back to him and folded her arms behind her head before beginning to walk ahead of him down the path and away from the safety of the estate.

Riker listened to her carefully and watched as she kept a close eye on her surroundings. She certainly looked worried. Perhaps someone was following her. However, she would not clear up any of that information for him. He watched as she tucked in her tail and brushed it off as being fine. Though Riker knew it wasn't actually fine. He was not exactly an idiot. Even so, he was not about the interrogate her about that right then.

As he watched her, the anxiety showed even more clearly. In a flash the woman had used her blood to create a weapon. Within moments a squirrel was snatched out of the air by the tool and pinned against a tree. Riker's nose scrunched up as he took in the sight.

She went on to ask about a job and then started playing one of her games. Riker watched as she pretended to head back into the forest. His eyes rolled to the sky a bit and he couldn't keep a chuckle from escaping his cold lips."I will always have a job for you here, Cosette. You are always welcome in my home, as an employee or a guest." He gave the woman one of his friendly smiles.

While getting here, one of the many paths had been taken, but she hadn't quite run into anyone during that span. Starting from the edge of the water, the path she made was clear, albeit that was briefly. Before walking into the pool, her shoes had been taken off and set aside: not having seen anyone else around, there wasn't too much chance they would be moved by mistake? Thinking as much, her legs were replaced by a tail over the course of a few moments, swishing through the shallow area near the edge of the partial lake in a brief check. Although it wasn't different than earlier walks, making sure the area was clear of anything dangerous was an often attempt and not skipped this time. Earlier, her brief survey had made that clear; the brief movement now was to ward off stones, debris, or fish that could be nearby.

Not exactly sure that should could end up hurting one, it wasn't a bad idea to make that less possible, not wanting to by accident. Despite this part of her routine being normal too, so was else. Lacie stayed to the flat shallows and not the area beyond that couple feet of surface. Already being warned about the sharp rocks, she knew better than to do much else but partly sit and stay around the perimeter. That was looked to, then were the surroundings. Other than herself, the sound of birds broke through the waterfall ambiance, but she didn't try to talk to them at this time, wary about being potentially lectured, even if it was just as a warning. Being out here alone for now, whether that would happen wasn't apparent; but by most chance would if someone passed by.

User Image Eirlys was becoming antsy with this whole infirmary routine that the nurses had her on. She wanted to be up and about, bed rest was driving her crazy. The woman had tried to make an escape outside to see the sky but had only made it as far as the door. Still not used to being in a human body, she had seemingly forgotten how to walk after three days of laying in bed. One of the nurses had helped her up and back to bed, where she was chastised. Eirlys had replied with frustration that she was a Spirit and not a child in need of scolding. However, she was not much for continuing arguments and fighting. She eventually gave in. So it was that Eirlys remained in bed, recovering from her injuries in what felt like an eternity of restraint. While a kind soul, she was not making the nurse's job easy. All she wanted to was to get of bed, but nooo, she wasn't healthy enough yet. Wasn't a week long enough?

It really had only been a week since Riker had found her. The vampire had been out on one of his moonlit rides when he came across her crumpled form on the trail. The woman had been under-dressed, frostbitten, sick and injured. Additionally, exposure to the cold had made her rather delirious. Riker had hoisted her up onto his horse's back and taken her to the infirmary so that she could be treated and looked after. She had been there ever since.

Currently she was sat up in her bed with a food tray sitting on her lap. On the tray was a bowl of vegetarian soup, some crackers, and a ginger ale. She stared at the items with a clear look of uncertainty showing on her face. She had not eaten much since arriving and the kitchen staff had worked hard to make something that she would like. Eirlys had been staring at the soup for a good fifteen minutes and it had reached a point where it was staring to become cold. This was nothing like what she was used to eating. The humans had always offered her spice cakes and sweet breads. Not... this. What even was this? She held the spoon in a wobbly hand and carefully took a bite. It was not all that bad but it certainly was not her favorite thing. She would much rather eat a spice pastry like an apple loaf or pumpkin cake. Even so, she decided to make due with what she had the best that she could.

The small vial in his hand glowed dimly such as a mason jar on a warm, summer night with a sky filled with fireflies ripe for the taking. As it ebbed away, he closed his bare hand around the smooth glass before tucking it away at the hip. There was time to deal with it later. Once more he stepped forward. The ground shifted under his boot fall. While he walked, he could still hear the vague memories of horse drawn carriages as they trudged along similar paths. Those days were long since gone. Human technology was far superior now and it changed how the world ran. Perhaps he was just stuck in his ways and liked the older world traditions. While he could learn about these things, if they didn't have some air of magic with it he wasn't very interested in finding out too much. Maybe he was still young enough to have too much pride and will fall from this someday like he had when he was a hatchling.

The ghosts in his memory lingered as he moved. While he was a single person on the road, he was not alone. With his phantoms, he had his company. From nearby he could hear the rush of water, the plummet of it from a higher perch to a pool below. It was familiar, something pleasant in a concrete jungle world the humans had created. Naturally he began to meander towards the noise, his eyes staying lowered to the ground while he merely followed with sound and the shadows cast from the light above. Beyond this, scent began to play a note.

Lifting his eyes upwards, he peered over the rim of his thick black glasses to look out towards the waters where a young girl was hovering around the pool. The scent was long ago, eons in time, but still something he could recall. It was a Nix, a legendary creature not often seen anymore. He'd met a couple back during the first years of his banishment from his hive. But, he didn't know them. Keeping at a distance, he shifted around the pouches at his hips under a well worn leather book was pulled out. It was the fifty-seventh volume of his notes. Also prying out a pen, ballpoint, he began to draw quick outlined sketches of the female he was seeing. Notes. He needed notes from observations.

Not quite here to do much else but sit, that was followed up with once a brief span went by; Lacie setting her arms to her sides after her change in stance. Moving her posture as well, so that she was sitting straight, not leaning ahead and toward the side as much, her line of sight went ahead to the waterfall. For the time being, it was taken into account, her thoughts directed toward where the water itself had come from. Other than what was already apparent; it had arrived from many places; the more direct source and what had the settings been were questioned. It could be seen as a boring topic, yet still was kept up in her mental path as it wandered. Drifting off from there eventually, running out of angled yo consider, her gaze drifted elsewhere; instead to the trees.

Raising her hand to block out some sunlight drifting to the waters, the forest was peered into as far as she could manage. Raising her voice then, while not at a speaking tone, a few notes carried through the air. Stopping then to wait for a response, it was given shortly, the birds in the nearby distance responding, speaking of various things they had seen, but not willing to mention any resources they had come across: which had to be seeds and various kinds of juniper or brush berries; from what she remembered of other conversations. Moving her attention further away, the space behind herself was given some thought; yet just for another moment.

Picking out the stranger; at least seeming to be one; standing off to the left of that direction, it wasn’t too long before she hazarded a question, hesitant and faulting but still clearly spoken. "Were you... lost or looking for something?" Even if it wasn’t the best response, it was still something. They appeared to be drawing or writing, but which wasn’t apparent.

Within the past few hours, most of Zurinh's time had been mostly spent shelving books in an attempt to organize them. Some had expected had been out of place, or it had appeared that way. In the chance that would cause issue later, he wanted to be sure about avoiding that, and had managed to get everything back into place as far as was apparent. The library itself, while not that vast, was still relatively expansive. Where he was standing now was nearby a table, the chair not yet pulled back: mostly from indecision to sit down. Seeing things from a distance, while not too much easier, was still better in some ways. Deciding against using it, Zurinh looked around the shelves for the moment, going off memory and mostly sure he had done things right, having made sure to read over things before making each decision. Not having anything else to do, the idea of passing the time with other things seemed more obvious.

Turning away from the shelves and towards his own thoughts, it wasn't long before he started off across the room's space, not knowing what he could try for next but sure that there were other things that had to be taken into account. Moving off from the library, his wander down the hall was gradual; Zurinh's thoughts taking up part of his attention. Other than looking after cleaning the house; which wasn't that urgent, being recently managed; he didn't have much else to do. Going by the kitchen could happen, but he didn't quite need anything; and he didn't feel like going outside. Mentally shrugging, the walk continued for some time before a few rooms were passed by, his pace stopping outside of one. Looking to the space there briefly, some indecision caught in his line of thought before he went past it, not going in but asking in a somewhat muted tone; to not wake anyone up, if he could go by.

Is it fine if I come in?” Not having anyone else to talk to, that it could be the same case for others meant that some boredom could be passed by.

User Image Eirlys had taken a few more bites of her food by the time a voice reached her ears. She placed the spoon back into the bowl and turned her amber colored eyes to the door. "You may come in," she called out in a quiet tone. She glanced to the bed by the window with a brief look of worry on her face. The kitchen assistant was the only other patient in the infirmary at that time and he sure was a grumpy man. Lucky for Eirlys he was still asleep.

Eirlys sat up a bit straighter and took a sip of her beverage. Her mind raced with questions and thoughts. There were so many things that she had left to ask the people around her. There was so much to be learned about the day-to-day lives of humans. They were such strange beings with the way that they went about doing things. Eirlys was still fascinated by cars, no matter how many times she came across one. Riding in them was another story altogether though. She hated riding in vehicles, they were so fast and noisy. Perhaps she could get her guest to answer some of the many questions that still formed within her curious mind.

After he spoke, there was a look his way by one of the people there, the response going by with a quiet tone. Nodding briefly, though not knowing whether it was picked up on, Zurinh moved through the doorway and stopped briefly to take in the surroundings before continuing his pace ahead. There weren’t many people here, which was good, but it brought about the sense that other than having the kitchen assistant-- who had accidently hurt himself while working-- there wasn’t anyone they could talk to. With the other man’s usual mood, which was worse since entering the infirmary, they probably hadn’t had much success there.

As he neared, they sat up straighter, this prompting further thought. As of some residents, they had arrived in a somewhat odd way; and asking anything about that wouldn’t be that good; at least overall. He had his own issues: and knew better than to go into any areas that could hold negative contexts. From that thought, his next words after stopping were mostly within neutral grounds. “
Was the soup alright? --I don’t work as kitchen staff, it’s mostly cleaning and library work instead.” Making an attempt at conversation; other words he went over were either being too abrupt or awkward. Other than skipping over to another topic, he wasn’t that fazed; carrying some indecision but not enough to affect his demeanor by much, his gaze drifting briefly to the surroundings before returning.
