                          THE PACK HISTORY

xxxxxxxxCashile Valley was once a beautiful, abundant land. It was a territory envied by all creatures great and small, a territory as majestic and prosperous as the great Forest of Divinity. The wolves who resided in this valley were generous, kind-hearted souls incapable of sin. They lived simple lives filled with respect for all that existed and unconditional love for one another. Alf and Lupa, the wolf god and goddess, looked down upon this land with pride. The two great canines had created this paradise and its caring inhabitants in hopes of spreading goodness into the world. For a time, they succeeded.

xxxxxxxxOne great spirit, however, did not agree with Alf and Lupa’s ambition. Fina, ruler of the Burning Woodland, desired a world full of chaos and grief. The wicked being used every ounce of his mighty, dark power to mold a pregnant she-wolf, Naamah, from his kingdom’s vile ashes. He released her into the world with a loveless heart and a cloud of hate in place of her soul, and guided her to Cashile Valley with a treacherous tornado.

xxxxxxxxThe vicious storm raged through the valley as the pack deeply slumbered. Under the cover of rain and shadows, Naamah snuck into the den site and murdered the alpha female. Fina dragged the body into his domain and fashioned it into a disguise for his demonic missionary, which he donned her with while she slept beside the unsuspecting alpha male. The Cashile wolves were none the wiser, tricked by Naamah’s disguise, and for the next few weeks celebrated the litter their alphas would soon bear. Alf and Lupa were displeased. They could not see through the veil of deception placed upon Naamah by Fina, but they knew that a malevolent energy now lurked within the alpha female’s belly. Something had to be done.

xxxxxxxxThe pack’s blind oracle, Malachi, began to sense the sinful sickness within the alpha female. Though he could not see, he could feel that the land’s energy had shifted. From the gods, he received visions of the destruction Naamah’s litter would cause the pack after birth. He saw her bearing embers of fire that filled the land with as much flame and ash as the Burning Woodland itself. The pups growing within Naamah were the seeds of Fina, and thus they were the seeds of ruin. Desperately, Malachi tried to convince the alpha male, the oracle’s most trusted friend, and the rest of the Cashile pack that the alpha female was not who she said she was. They refused to believe him, too mystified by the grand illusion to be swayed. When Malachi continued to insist that she was a scheming enchantress, the alpha male threatened him with exile. The oracle was at a loss. Naamah’s delivery date had almost arrived and time was slipping away.

xxxxxxxxOn the night of a great pack hunt, when the alpha and his strongest hunters were gone, Malachi did the unthinkable. He attempted to kill Naamah and her unborn pups by tearing into her belly. The hunting party returned in time to witness Malachi sinking his teeth into the alpha female. The alpha male sprang forward and grabbed the oracle by the neck, tossing him aside. Malachi tried to fight his way back to the bleeding alpha female to save his pack from their impending doom, but the alpha male grabbed him by the throat and pinned him to the earth. As Malachi bled and suffocated on the ground, Naamah entered a trauma-induced labor. ”It’s too late,” the oracle wheezed, “You did not know the truth when it stood before you, and until you do, you shall never see with clarity.” When the first pup whimpered, Malachi died. The land was forever shrouded in a dense fog. Fina had succeeded.

xxxxxxxxAfter birthing, Naamah disappeared. No one knew the truth, aside from Alf and Lupa who, due to the strength of the curse, could not share it. Murder became more frequent. Wolves who had once mated for life became intimate with others. Prey became less abundant, especially in the winter months. Wolves began to question the gods they praised, for they did not understand the misfortune that had befallen them. Rapidly, they began to die. Alf and Lupa were pained greatly by this and blessed the pack with another oracle named Alistair. He was able to restore the pack’s confidence in the two spirits, and those who refused to believe were sent away. Regardless of what the pack did, what Alistair did, or what the gods did, the fog remained, a forever-mark of the grave injustice that had been done to Malachi. As he lay dying, Alistair told the pack: "The truth must be found to lift the fog." Ever since, the Cashile wolves have been blindly seeking it.

                          THE ROLE PLAY PLOT

xxxxxxxxToday, Cashile Valley is still recovering from its destructive past. The evil wolves, supposedly, have all moved on. Fortunately, prey is now abundant, but hunting in such foggy conditions is difficult. More often than not, it is storming. The beloved alpha male, Alwin, recently passed away, leaving a single heir to take his place. Artemis is the first pack leader to possess the Sense, the ability to receive messages from the gods, since Alistair’s time. To older wolves that know of Cashile’s history, this is a momentous sign.

xxxxxxxxWith Artemis’ guidance, will the pack finally discover the secret behind the valley’s fog?

                          Pack Laws

The word of the alphas is law.

Defend your pack, even with your life.

Do not hunt outside of the territory's boundaries.

Disrespecting superior ranks may lead to punishment or demotion.

Prey is killed only to be eaten.

Elders, nursing mothers, pups and any injured wolves are fed first. Then, the pack may feast.

A wolf must be at least one year of age to become an apprentice.

Newly appointed sentries, warriors, and scouts will keep a silent vigil for one night after their promotion.

A wolf cannot be made beta without having mentored at least one apprentice.

The beta will become temporary alpha if the alpha dies, retires, or is exiled, until a new one is appointed.

After the death or retirement of a beta, a new beta must be appointed before moonrise that day.

If a wolf refuses to perform the duties required by his/her rank, then that rank will be revoked.

Boundaries must be checked and marked daily. Challenge all trespassing wolves.

An honorable wolf does not need to kill other wolves to win his/her battles, unless it is necessary for self-defense.

Wolves must gain the permission of the alphas before conceiving pups.

At least one sentry must be guarding the pack den site at all times.

The pack shaman is not permitted to mate or have pups.

Any severe crime may result in exile. An exiled wolf can never return to Cashile Valley.

                          The Wolves

The Cashile wolves have sharper ears and noses due to the lack of visibility in the valley. They rely on sounds and scents more than sight.

Due to its isolated state in Cashile Valley, the pack is not very inviting towards newcomers.

The pack is very faithful in the great god and goddess Alf and Lupa. Every full moon, an offering of white rabbit is left for the two in the beam of light in Polaris Cave.

Usually, the Cashile wolves are very loving and accepting of one another.

Because it is somewhat difficult to hunt in the fog, these wolves are used to going days without full bellies. They are very resilient.

                          Body Postures

Dominant - A tall, stiff-legged stance. The ears are erect and the hackles are slightly bristled. The tail is held vertical and is slightly curled towards the wolf's back. A dominant wolf will intimidate with its unwavering stare.

Submissive - A lowered stance. The tail is in between the wolf's legs and its back is slightly arched. The ears are pulled back, flattened against the head. A more submissive wolf may roll onto its back and expose its vulnerable throat and underbelly.

Threatened - A tense, upright stance. The ears are pulled back against the head and the eyes are narrowed. The tail points straight out, parallel to the ground. A wolf in this position is feeling uncertain, and is trying to intimidate out of caution.

Uncertain - A somewhat aggressive stance. The tail is slightly curved upwards and the hackles are raised. The head is lowered and the ears are pinned back. A wolf in this position is beginning to relax, but continues to keep a close eye on the potential threat.

Defensive - A strong, cautious stance. The tail is pointing towards the ground and is tucked slightly between the legs. The body is held tall. The wolf's teeth may be bared.

Fearful - A scared, uncomfortable stance. The tail is lowered almost between the legs. The body is held closer to the ground and the ears are down too. The wolf's head may be slightly bowed. A fearful wolf may arch its back and bark.

Aroused - A playful stance. The tail is either pointing straight back or upwards, and wags. The ears are erect and moving. An aroused wolf may crouch, as if ready to pounce.

                          Special Events

Rite of Sustenance: Every full moon, the Cashile oracle must kill a white rabbit and leave it in the beam of moonlight in Polaris Cave for Alf and Lupa. If the oracle fails to do so, the pack will experience great misfortune until the next offering is left. White rabbits are not native to Cashile Valley and only appear on the day of the full moon. If a wolf aside from the oracle kills the white rabbit, it is considered impure and cannot be used as an offering.

The Pack Hunt: These are hunts that take place whenever the pack needs food. All of the capable wolves in the pack participate and the hunts are led by dietrich. Generally they take place every two or three weeks.

Heart Song: An event that takes place on the first day of spring each year. Male and female wolves who are courting each other go to Mist Lake and stand on opposite shores. They howl to each other and compete to see which pair of them is the most closely bonded by recognizing their suitor's howl and matching its pitch. The pair that wins automatically gains breeding rights for the spring.

Hunt for the Dietrich: This is a competitive event held only when a new dietrich needs to be selected. The candidates for the position must successfully bring down a doe by themselves. They get two chances to do so. The wolf who is successful becomes the next dietrich.

Seasonal Howl: On the night of each seasonal solstice, the pack gathers and howls together to the night sky, then sleep all together outside of the dens. This exposure to the four seasons refreshes their spiritual energy and strengthens the pack bond.

The Cleansing: After the birth of a new litter, the pups are carried into the shaman's den. There, when the stars are shimmering in the sky, the shaman, in front of the entire pack, blesses each newborn with the love of Alf and Lupa. The pups' paws are then dipped into the small pool of water buried within the shaman's lair, symbolically cleansing their spirits of any sin and making them pure. Only the parents bear witness to this. As ordinary as the shaman's pond seems to be, it is said to softly glow during this ceremony, a divine sight for all who glimpse it.

The Departure: The equivalent of a funeral. This is either a joyous occasion or a sorrowful one, depending on how the wolf came to be deceased. Usually this ceremony is uplifting as it means an old wolf is bidding the pack farewell and preparing for his or her journey to the Forest of Divinity. In such a case, the entire pack will come together and exchange farewells with the elder before he or she leaves the den site. When a wolf dies unnaturally, the pack will gather around their carcass and keep a still, silent vigil until night has fallen. Then, the pack joins together in a comforting group howl to try and raise the soul of the deceased up to Alf and Lupa.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE ALPHAS

The alpha pair rule the pack together. Some single alphas never choose a mate and instead run the pack solo. More often than not, the stronger alpha is the female. They are not the toughest wolves in the pack, but they are certainly the smartest. They are the decision makers. Usually, the alpha pair will be mated for life, but if one begins to underperform then that wolf will be replaced. These are the most respected wolves in the pack. Going against an alpha’s commands can get a wolf punished, demoted or even exiled. It is important to stay on the alpha pair’s good side. Do not cross them.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE BETA

Also called "the enforcer", the beta is the alpha pair’s second-in-command and the most aggressive wolf in the pack. This wolf is a bodyguard to the alphas and keeps everyone else in line; he protects the pack, makes sure the pack members follow pack rules and do not behave above their ranks. The beta must be a strong wolf but does not have to be smart, as the alphas make all of the pack decisions. Generally, a beta is the pack's most capable fighter, so most betas were originally pack warriors and also train current ones. If an alpha were to unexpectedly die, the beta would take power only temporarily until another alpha is appointed, as the wolf in this position is not good at making decisions.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE DELEGATES

There are two delegates appointed in the pack. One is the scout delegate, who is the best scout in the pack and represents that rank. One is the warrior delegate, who is the best warrior in the pack and represents that rank. Their purpose is to provide advice for the alphas, the beta, and all members of the pack pertaining to the rank they uphold and also general matters. With each delegate coming from a different rank background, they are diverse, and thus more effective as a team. The delegates are usually older wolves with a lot of experience, but they can be younger, wiser wolves as well. They ensure that every wolf in the pack is doing their specific job.

                                  - Do not apply!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE DIETRICH

The dietrich is an older wolf with a lot of hunting experience that leads every major pack hunt, and is considered one of the delegates as well. This wolf is a very skilled hunter and will often give lessons to younger pack members that are not as adept out in the field. Becoming the dietrich is based primarily on the ability to perform well under pressure. During a chaotic hunt, this wolf must be able to determine the party’s target, announce a plan of action, yell out commands, and decide when to continue a hunt or when to abandon one. It is not an easy role to uphold and it is not one a wolf will have for life. When the current dietrich is too old to continue leading hunts, or is injured and cannot hunt any longer, potential replacements can participate in the Hunt for the Dietrich to determine who will be the next one.

                                  - Do not apply!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE SHAMAN

The shaman is the most spiritual wolf in the pack when an oracle is not present. It is also the wolf an oracle will usually turn to for guidance with visions. This wolf has the ability to nurse Cashile wolves back to health using both herbal and spiritual healing. Though well-respected and loved by the pack, being the shaman is a rather lonely profession. The shaman cannot have a mate or pups, and sleeps in a den separate from the rest of the pack. It takes a certain kind of wolf to wield such knowledge and spirituality while remaining at peace with solitude. Fortunately, a shaman usually has one apprentice to keep him/her company. Shamanism is a lifelong commitment. The reward for abandoning the rank of shaman is banishment. Up until being promoted to shaman however, an apprentice can back out at any time as long as another is available. There must be one shaman-in-training at all times.

                                  - Bharati (Thy Lady Ryuusei)
                                  - Meka (Tamul-chan9090)

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE SENTRIES

The sentries are wolves who can no longer uphold the duties required of them by their ranks; whether it be because of an injury or simply old age, these wolves are, for some reason or another, no longer as capable as they once were. The wolves who become sentries are not ready to rest and wish to continue benefitting the pack. A sentry’s duties include guarding certain areas around the den site, patrolling the den site itself, and advising scouts and warriors if they need it. This rank does not take too much out of a wolf, which makes it perfect for those that are older.

                                  - Zraei (Amator Demoni)
                                  - Liam (Saebel)

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE WARRIORS

Highly respected and equally as formidable, the warriors are the wolves in charge of keeping the Cashile pack safe from harm. These wolves are usually quite muscular, and some have many scars from previous battles. They are skilled enough to fight a majority of predators, including other wolves, and their strength is very useful during pack hunts. Every warrior is assigned an apprentice to mentor.

                                  - Loki (Thy Lady Ryuusei)
                                  - Cyo (Amator Demoni)
                                  - Skyld (xXEchoingSilenceXx)
                                  - Helaku (A L ii E N_P A N D A)
                                  - Aizel (Misthral)
                                  - Cloud (Vailwolf)
                                  - Kale (CptButterfly)

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE WARRIOR APPRENTICES

The warrior apprentices are usually young wolves who are being trained specifically to fight. It is not uncommon for older wolves to be apprentices as well. Each apprentice is assigned a mentor from their intended rank, and no two apprentices will share the same mentor at the same time. During their apprenticeship, these wolves undergo rigorous testing. Until a warrior apprentice passes the final test, winning a spar against his or her mentor, that wolf cannot advance to the rank of warrior.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE SCOUTS

As the name suggests, the scouts patrol the entire territory and ensure that nothing will bring the pack any harm. They are the eyes and ears of the pack, always on the look out for trouble. If the scouts do find anything threatening while out and about, they will either summon the beta and the pack’s warriors, or report back to the experienced sentries for advice, depending on the severity of the situation. These wolves are usually smaller and incredibly quick, which gives them the ability to slip through the territory undetected.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE SCOUT APPRENTICES

The scout apprentices are usually young wolves who are being trained specifically to scout. It is not uncommon for older wolves to be apprentices as well. Each apprentice is assigned a mentor from their intended rank, and no two apprentices will share the same mentor at the same time. During their apprenticeship, these wolves undergo rigorous testing. Until a scout apprentice passes the final test, finding five specific objects throughout the territory by his or her mentor while remaining undetected by various sentries, that wolf cannot advance to the rank of scout.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE PACK ELDERS

The elders of the pack are wolves who can no longer perform their duties and wish to retire. They are in charge of keeping an eye on the pups when their parents are away. These wolves are wise due to all of their life experience and are coveted members of the pack. Most elders enjoy sharing stories with the pack’s youth, and they are fantastic at teaching lessons with mere words. A lot of the time though, the elders simply sleep.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE PACK MEMBERS

While every wolf is a pack member, this rank belongs to the Cashile wolves who chose not to become a warrior or a scout and are comfortable remaining “rankless”. These wolves make up the bulk of the pack. They assist the elders in watching the pups and also partake in pack hunts. Usually, these wolves aren't especially skilled in any area, which is why they choose not to pursue any particular rank. This is also the rank that all pups will grow into prior to reaching the apprentice age.

                                  - Cloud (Vailwolf)
                                  - Sabine (Xylia_Amarante)
                                  - Ansel (Breathe Disaster)
                                  - Skadi (Saebel)
                                  - Basya (MoosesCats)
                                  - Reek (Vailwolf)

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE PUPS

The pups are the pack’s children and also its future. All members of the pack are allowed to have pups, but all must ask the alphas for permission prior to mating. These rambunctious little wolves bring a lot of joy to the Cashile den site, and also a lot of mischief. Pups cannot leave the den without an adult companion. They are very vulnerable due to their size, and are an enticing snack for all predators. Fortunately, they are also very well guarded.

                                  - Kenai (Breathe Disaster)
                                  - Wynter (ii R a y)
                                  - Demoski (A L ii E N_P A N D A)
                                  - Sani (Tamul-chan9090)
                                  - Fiametta (VespertineVagabond)

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE OMEGA

The omega is also known as the “tester” wolf and is actually an important part of the pack. An omega is a necessity to uphold the pack's balance. Also referred to as the "defuser", the omega absorbs the energy and aggression of the other wolves. When tension is high and the pack is on edge, this wolf will get into the middle of a fight and take the brunt of it without ever losing his cool or showing any aggression. This calms the other wolves down. He is not valued much by the pack, an omega eats last and has the fewest privileges, but he certainly plays an essential role.

                                  - Fenrus (VespertineVagabond)

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx THE NEWCOMERS

Lone wolves. Rogues. Newcomers are wolves from outside of Cashile Valley. Through word of mouth or by a stroke of luck, these canines have discovered the pack that is shrouded in fog. Because of its close-knit atmosphere, it is difficult for new wolves to be recognized as a true member of the Cashile pack. These wolves may be purposefully provoked to try and rouse a reaction, because if they make any big mistakes they are likely to be exiled from the territory. Wolves identified as newcomers are still being monitored by the pack's alphas and members. In order to be promoted, a wolf must prove him/herself to be a useful member of Cashile. Generally this is does not take long.

Mentor - someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger individual.

To be a mentor is a great honor in the Cashile pack. Mentors are responsible for the future of the younger wolves and must make sure that the pack will always be in good paws. The bond between a mentor and an apprentice is usually very strong. Not just any wolf is chosen to be a mentor for another. If a wolf is given a certain apprentice, that apprentice has been given to him/her for a reason. A playful wolf would never be given an equally as playful apprentice, for example. Mentors must be good teachers with limitless amounts of patience. It can be a very frustrating job but it can also be incredibly rewarding. Most wolves will mentor at least one wolf in their lives, and perhaps more. It is a great compliment to be chosen for mentorship and an even greater honor.

Apprentice - an individual who learns a job or skill by working for a fixed period of time with someone who is very good at that job or skill.

Being an apprentice is not an easy task. Much is expected of the young wolves who choose to pursue a particular rank within the Cashile pack. They can expect rigorous training, little rest, and a lot of lectures from their assigned mentors. However, it is usually a wonderful experience that molds a young wolf into a useful adult. Apprentices must be good listeners who are eager to learn. They also must be respectful towards their mentor. Reluctant apprentices may find themselves as pack members before their lives are over. Often, apprentices' personalities are vastly different from that of the wolf they are paired with. Some may complain at first about the wolf assigned to them. However, almost all apprentices emerge from their apprenticeships with a rank and a lifelong friendship. An apprenticeship will only be what a wolf makes of it.

Mentor/Apprentice Ceremony - When a young wolf comes of age to be appointed a mentor and a wolf who has already achieved the apprentice's intended rank is deemed capable, the alphas will call a pack meeting and announce the new apprenticeship with the following words:

"(Mentor's name), you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have proven to be an excellent (current rank), and you are a wolf of (quality) and (quality). From this day forward, you will be the mentor of (apprentice's name), and I expect you to pass on all you know to (apprentice)."

The mentor and apprentice then howl briefly together, signifying their newfound unity.

                            Current Apprenticeships:

                            N/A

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxCASHILE VALLEY

Once a vibrant oasis, Cashile Valley has become a dark, fog-shrouded territory. Sun cannot completely penetrate the thick mist, and instead creates an eerie, ominous glow overhead. The valley is large but enclosed on all sides by looming mountains. The only way in and out of the valley is through Alistair’s Pass, a large pathway that cuts through the mountainous terrain.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxALVARO MOUNTAINS

The Alvaro Mountain range encloses the entirety of Cashile Valley. The tops of its peaks are capped with ice, and it is very treacherous terrain. Most wolves have never climbed these mountains and never will. Here, mountain goats roam the rocky earth, along with cougars and grizzly bears. It is an especially dangerous place and should be avoided at all costs.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxAMUN PEAK

This is the highest point in Cashile Valley. Amun Peak is a monstrosity, and when the sun rises the peak casts a gigantic shadow across the foggy valley.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxPADUA FALLS

Arguably the most beautiful landmark in Cashile Valley, Padua Falls is a large waterfall that marks the beginning of the Lotus River. The falls are surprisingly quiet and happen to be both the mistiest and clearest part of the territory. The air surrounding Padua Falls is suffocatingly misty, but Polaris Cave, which is concealed behind the cascading water, contains an opening in the ceiling that allows sun and moonlight to pour in from outside the valley.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxLOTUS RIVER

The Lotus River flows from the base of Padua Falls and snakes through all of Cashile Valley. From a brief detour in Mist Lake, it continues out through Alistair’s Pass and eventually joins an ocean far from the territory. This is the land’s main water source. Mostly, the river is calm, except for a patch of rapids near Padua Falls and another patch just before Khaalida Falls at the beginning of Alistiar's Pass.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxMIST LAKE

Mist Lake certainly lives up to its name. The large body of water is hard to see and many animals have fallen into its mysterious depths. This makes it a very dangerous place for pups, so generally they are kept away from the water's edge. At sunrise, the fog here is so intense that from one side of the lake a wolf cannot see the opposite shore. Thankfully, around midday, each shoreline is just barely visible through the fog.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxKHAALIDA FALLS

Khaalida falls is located in the midsection of Alistair's Pass, where the terrain is jagged, rocky, and unstable. Wolves who travel alongside the rapids leading to this grand waterfall must be careful, but generally this area is avoided. Prior to Khaalida's grand descent into the river below, which eventually leads to the sea, a large forest path provides wolves and other animals safe passage in and out of the valley.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxINFINITY FIELD

As its name suggests, Infinity Field seems to never end. It lies at the northern end of the valley, near Alistair’s Pass, and is the most prey-abundant area in the territory. The fog that covers this field is very thick, which makes hunting by sight very difficult, not to mention dangerous. Many wolves have lost their lives in this field, more still have gone missing.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxCHISISI FOREST

Chisisi Forest makes up around 80% of Cashile Valley. It is coniferous, and is incredibly dense. The fog is not as strong within the trees but rather towards the top of them. It is not uncommon for disoriented birds to break their necks on the topmost branches of the pine trees in this forest. Within the heart of these woods is where the Cashile den is located.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxCASHILE DEN SITE

At the heart of Chisisi Forest, where the fog is not so thick, can be found the Cashile Pack’s den site. It is a large clearing at the base of a mountainous hill. This is where the Cashile pack gathers. The main den is carved into the rocky hill itself, and the shaman’s den is located just outside of the main den’s mouth. Within the shaman’s den is a small waterfall and pond that originate from the Lotus River, which cuts through the middle of the hill. The Great White Boulder stands at the den site's eastern edge, and is where the alphas will stand when holding pack meetings or making important announcements.

                            Hunting Facts and Techniques

Practice sessions precede any major hunt so the wolves can hone their skills to increase the likelihood of a successful hunt.

Depending on the season, the intended prey will change. During the winter, for example, wolves will choose to hunt fattier prey such as moose.

Wolves will track their prey using the scents of its hoof prints, urine, and droppings. These marks also let the wolves determine the age of the animal they are tracking, which helps them establish a target.

When hunting smaller prey, wolves will either stalk silently towards it or ambush it. Usually this involves splitting into two groups, one of which will guide the prey towards the hidden half.

During the winter, wolves may hold snow in their mouths to keep their breath invisible to their prey.

When hunting larger prey, wolves will usually single out the weakest member of a herd or harem and intimidate it into running. The constant chase prevents the target from resting, drinking, or eating, and the wolves inflict various wounds throughout. The prey eventually suffers from blood loss in exhaustion and gives in.

Wolves require the stimulus of a running animal to hunt, so they will not pursue prey that is standing its ground. If a target is not running then the wolves will not hunt it.

Once the animal they were hunting is on the ground, the wolves will begin to eat. They do not kill their prey before digging in.

                            Commonly Hunted Prey

Bison - Bull (six wolves), Cow (five wolves), Calf (two wolves) - Requires five successful hits to kill.

Moose - Bull (four wolves), Cow (three wolves), Calf (two wolves) - Requires four successful hits to kill.

Elk - Bull (three wolves), Cow (two wolves), Calf (one wolf) - Requires three successful hits to kill.

Deer - Buck (two wolves), Doe (two wolves), Fawn (one wolf) - Requires two successful hits to kill.

Beaver - (one wolf) - Requires one successful hit to kill.

Rabbit - (one wolf) - Requires one successful hit to kill.

Squirrel - (one wolf) - Requires one successful hit to kill.

                            Hunting System

Establish a posting order. Everyone on a hunt deserves at least one chance to post, unless the prey is already brought down. Do not post twice before someone else has posted once!

Three misses in a row as a group signifies a failed hunt.

To participate in a hunt, begin a new post but only write "Generating Random Number" where you would normally write your character's actions.

Click on the drop down arrow for "Post Action" to the right of your posting screen and select "Random Number".

Generate a random number from: 1 to 2 (fill this in). Submit your post.

One - Miss, Two - Hit. Depending on the number your post generated, edit your character's hunting actions. Do not cheat, I will know if you do!

If you don't understand the hunting system, shoot me a private message and I'll explain it to you further.

                            Fighting Facts and Techniques

Sparring sessions precede any major battle so the wolves can hone their skills to increase the likelihood of a successful fight.

Wolves prefer psychological fights to actual confrontations, and they will try to intimidate and dominate their opponent to avoid having to attack. Usually the subordinate wolf will submit before a fight begins.

Fights for rank generally do not involve injury. They are ritualized and often end when one wolf is pinned beneath the other.

Mating occurs in the winter months (January-April), which makes wolves more likely to fight each other during that period.

When another predator threatens a wolf pack, they will first try to chase it away. If the animal runs, the wolves will let it go. If it does not run, they will stand and fight.

Wolves can smell their enemies long before they can see them.

Wolf packs howl as a sign of camaraderie. When howling as a group, each wolf will change pitch various times to give any listening enemies the impression that the pack is larger than it actually is.

                            Commonly Encountered Enemies

Fox - Like many of the wolf's predators, foxes will scavenge off of kills made by wolves. In turn, wolves might raid fox food stores if discovered within their territory boundaries. Wolf packs have been known to reside in former fox dens. However, the two species usually do not interact with one another because foxes are not a fierce food chain competitor. Wolves may chase down and kill foxes that are feeding from a recent kill, and may even eat the red canines if food is scarce, but usually they ignore foxes. Requires one successful hit to chase away / two successful hits to kill.

Coyote - These creatures look like small wolves, but the two canine species do not coexist peacefully. Coyotes are a nuisance at best. If the Cashile pack makes a successful kill, scavenging coyotes are likely to make an appearance. Typically though, this occurs in the wintertime when food is scarce. Coyotes will either travel in small packs or in pairs of two and are primarily nocturnal animals. Requires one successful hit to chase away / two successful hits to kill.

Cougar (Mountain Lion) - Due to different hunting elevations, wolves do not usually encounter cougars; however, wintertime causes prey to move deeper into the valley and away from the colder mountainous terrain. Therefore, wolves are likely to encounter cougars only seasonally when the snow is falling and prey is scarcer. Sometimes, wolves will usurp the kills of cougars. Though wolf packs abundant in members may kill a cougar if they cross paths, they never eat the predator. Usually, a cougar will just be chased away from the pack's territory. - Requires two successful hits to chase away / four successful hits to kill.

Grizzly Bear - Wolves and grizzly bears share a relationship of "mutual avoidance". Any aggressive interactions between the two species usually take place near the wolf den site. Bears may be attracted by prey carcasses or the scent of wolf pups, but only if they are unable to find food themselves. To drive an intrusive bear away, wolves will gang up on it, threaten the safety of its own cubs, if present, and harass it incessantly until it runs away. It is incredibly rare for wolves to kill a grizzly bear, unless it is young, old, or otherwise weakened. If detected on the territory though, they may dig up hibernating cubs and kill them. - Requires three successful hits to chase away / six successful hits to kill.

                            Fighting System

Establish a posting order. Each person will get three chances to generate a number and post. Take turns!

Fights between two wolves will obviously only involve those two wolves, unless the omega chooses to defuse the situation.

Shaman: Wolves of Cashile, as you know, I cannot serve as the pack's shaman forever. Therefore, I have chosen a wolf who has shown great promise in the art of healing. Your next shaman will be (apprentice's name).
Alpha: (Apprentice's name), do you accept the role of apprentice to (shaman's name) and all of the responsibilities that it constitutes?

Shaman: Then you must travel with me to Polaris Cave this night to be accepted by Alf and Lupa as my apprentice.
Alpha: May their good will guide you there safely.

The shaman and his/her new apprentice howl briefly together to signify their newfound unity. Once night has fallen, the two travel to Polaris Cave and the new apprentice must sit within the single beam of moonlight, alone.

Shaman: (Apprentice's name), is it your wish to pursue the blessed path of shamanism?
                                    Apprentice: It is.
Shaman: Then look upwards and into the moonlight. (The apprentice looks up into the silver light.)
Shaman: Alf and Lupa, wolves of the Woodland of Divinity, I present you with this apprentice. (He/she) has chosen the path of a shaman. Grant (him/her) your wisdom and insight so that (he/she) may understand your ways and heal (his/her) pack mates in accordance with your will.

Together, the shaman and apprentice lay with their heads resting in the beam of moonlight and have a dream from Alf and Lupa.

                            Courtship and Mating Facts

Courting wolves will become more physical by mouthing each others muzzles, walking close together, rubbing against one another, and sleeping side-by-side.

During the mating season, the male wolf and female wolf will separate themselves from the pack for privacy.

An expecting mated pair will dig their own den near the pack den site, in which the female will give birth and begin to raise her pups.

Most den sites face southwards to ensure that enough sunlight hits the area. This aids in keeping the dens snow-free in the wintertime.

The male will smell the air and flick his tongue in and out around the female he is courting to detect any sex hormones.

If a female wolf is not currently sexually receptive, she will repel interested males by snarling and snapping her jaws.

Generally, the wolf is monogamous and will remain with one mate for life.

Some widowed wolves have been known to forever mourn their mate and never take on another.

                            The Process of Pup Rearing

A female wolf will be pregnant for almost three months before giving birth.

The average wolf litter consists of five to six pups. Most are born in the spring or early summer.

When born, pups are blind and deaf. After nearly two weeks they can see, and at three weeks they can leave the den.

During the first few weeks after birth, the mother wolf and her pups do not leave the den. This leaves the father to provide for them by bringing them food.

At the age of one month, wolf pups can begin to digest solid food and explore the world. The first few weeks of their lives are filled with milk and sleep.

After a few months of life, when autumn finally strikes, wolf pups are considered old enough to accompany elder wolves on hunts.

Wolves are a species that participates in allo-parental care. If a pup is orphaned, another wolf pair may adopt it.

                            The Rules of Mating

A pair of wolves cannot produce pups unless permission has been received from the alphas.

Pups that are born in secret, without permission, will be killed without hesitation. The parents will then be exiled.

The abundance of food, the safety of the den site, the current population, and the attitude of the two wolves involved are taken into account when breeding rights are being considered.

Only the winning pair of the Heart Song event has automatic breeding rights come spring.

In Cashile, wolves mate for life. Breaking the bond with a current mate for another wolf is frowned upon, but is not a punishable offense.

For the first month, the two parents will be given time to bond and care for their pups. When the month is over, the rest of the pack helps raise the youngsters and the two wolves must return to their former duties.

                            Mating System

Producing pups is a game of chance that not all wolves will win. To see if your wolf will bear pups, the person playing the female character must use this system for her mating post (time-skip all of the pornographic details, please).

Once the post is written, click on the drop down arrow for "Post Action" to the right of your posting screen and select "Random Number".

Generate a random number from: 1 to 2 (fill this in). Submit your post.

One - None, Two - Pups. Whether or not your female wolf bears pups is decided by the number your post generated. Do not cheat, I will know if you do!

If your wolf will be producing pups, congratulations! How many pups is also a game of chance, though...

When it comes time for your wolf to give birth, write her labor post (where she starts the birthing process) then click on the drop down arrow for "Post Action" to the right of your posting screen and select "Random Number".

Generate a random number from: 1 to 6 (fill this in). Submit your post.

The number of pups your wolf bears is decided by the number your post generated. Once you know how many pups there will be, post in the OOC thread to find role players willing to play them. You may play only one of your own pups, if you so choose.
