LUCE

It was pure agony to be walking, but Luce, however, kept her lips in a small smile as she put on her iconic rattan cowboy hat and zipped up her worn leather jacket. Her fingers felt numb and her muscles cried out for sleep, but Luce ignored it as she slung her hunting rifle across her back. The dark-haired woman sighed as she looked at her cracked Pipboy where in the dim green lighting showed her pulse. Too high for Luce's taste, but better then the last few days. Her heart went through one of its episode and she was bed-stricken for most of the time. And from what she heard from Jody who was busy making sure that she was still alive... From what she heard from the fire-haired girl, she had missed quite alot. A shame that she couldn't help put some lead into the raiders, she felt guilty but maybe the following days she could make it up to the fine folks of Falls Creek. She had a reputation to keep up, of course. The veteran woman from the South who can survive through everything.

Ah, cannibals, tribals, slavers (the hair on Luce's neck stood up and her pulse perked), and every other scum under the Commonwealth sun was coming to get them. She wasn't sure why she didn't feel so... anxious about it, maybe it was the fact that she survived against greater odds and for one thing there were highly skilled townspeople and mercenaries. And well, she had a great run and maybe they'll be a bar in heaven and maybe she could actually drink something that can get her hammered without her heart throwing a tamtrum. Giving a cough, she stuck her hands into her pocket where she waited for the young woman to come down so they could walk down for the town meeting. Giving a nod, they opened the door, and soon the morning air hit her lungs, as she peered over to her "niece".

Ah, a facade, they were as related a a cat to a dog. However, they looked alot like each other especially their amber eyes. Everyone in Falls Creek believed them to be related. Aunt Luce, that's what Jody called her and of course she was paid for her silence and keeping to her side of the story. She remembered when they first met, the girl told her life story and well Luce had a soft heart for those who were running away from their less than... normal pasts. So with a weary sigh and with a handshake with a promise she'll help her keep her identity a promise, they became aunt and niece. She was a sister from the mother's side. And though she didn't like to admit it, the situation did... help with her own illusion. Jody may have believed it was a business deal, but Luce looked out for her like...

An aunt.

Huh.

And that's why as they were walking, Luce couldn't help but give her own grievances,

"I know you're young,"

Luce gave a cough, her heart leaped out of her ribcage as she groaned in pain.

"I know you're a night-kind of person,"

An euphemism for a pretty girl who knows that she's pretty enough to attract unwanted attention.

Luce paused, thinking of the words to use carefully.

"I... just don't want you out so late. They're so many things going on. Lots of shady people these days," Luce said as she sighed, she turned her gaze forward. Her experience told her that youngsters liked to do whatever the hell they want and she was in no position to tell Jody what to do. Hell they aren't really related.

"Ah, you don't have to listen to me. But just watch out for yourself,"

Luce paused,

"Huh... Are you staying out late cause you fancy a boy?" Luce asked with a laugh as she nudged the girl with her shoulder.

Daniel was a bit surprised that the others actual listened to his suggestion. He was especially surprised that Lucien listened to him. Perhaps the other wasn’t so bad after all; he even seemed to develop a sense of humor after some time. Daniel had dealt with addicts on a fairly regular basis so he felt as if he had some authority on the matter. Chems were an uneasy area of expertise for him, despite him never having taken any. Others concerned that the information they had gotten was incorrect, but what if it was? It was better than nothing.

As much of an accomplishment it was to get something out of the druggie the information made Daniel uneasy. Daniel now wished that he had kept his mouth shut. He wished they didn’t have any of the information. Then when the raiders came they could have just shot him dead and it would be quick, he wouldn’t even know what had hit him. He didn’t like the idea of dying, but he didn’t really enjoy the idea of fighting either. It seemed a little pointless to him. Hackett seemed relatively experienced with this sacking town business and Falls Creek seemed kind of green in the whole defending their homeland area.

What really burned Daniel was now he was really in this thing. He had made a bad habit of being helpful so surely he had to keep helping. Life was much easier when he was a relative stranger. If there was one thing Daniel was sure of right now it was that if he got out of this alive he was getting the sure ******** out of town and never look back. It was more trouble than it was worth.

                                    ---

Daniel had woken up with his head pounding. He hadn’t woken up hungover in a long time. Only rookies get hung over, Daniel was an old pro. However these days were different. At the moment Daniel didn’t drink for fun. He drank to numb his anxiety, to calm his nerves. Unlike others he didn’t have anyone to talk to or to rely on, he only had a bottle. He wasn’t lonely, or at least he didn’t think of himself that way, but he couldn’t help but think that maybe this whole raider tragedy might be less painful for him if there was another warm body sharing his bed. Then he reminded himself of his few past relationships and how poorly they ended and convinced himself that being alone was probably for the best.

This was quite possibly the worst morning to be hungover. Daniel needed to be up and at the town meeting. As he slowly sat up in bed the pain in his head increased. This damn town. This damn stupid town. He slowly crawled out of his bed, his stomach churning. Once he stood up he closed his eyes, it gave him a temporary relief. After a moment he opened his eyes and shuffled over to his dresser. He picked out some leather armor. The clothes were rather drab, dreary, and depressing. It had only been a couple of days but Daniel was missing his suits. Being so ill put together made Daniel uncomfortable. If you weren’t putting your best foot forward you might as well not be putting your foot out at all.

Dressing was slow and arduous. Everything was painful. He cursed himself for being so weak, so anxious, fearful. Daniel had gotten himself out of plenty of scraps, what’s to say that he wouldn’t get himself out of this one? He was giving these raiders too much credit and himself not enough.

When he finally got himself together he went to get his things. While getting his gun he thought about taking some med-x for his headache but he knew not to entertain he thought too much. He could get through this little rough patch on his own with no help from chems, he always did. Once he had gathered his things he opened the door. The light hit him like a freight train. His head ached like he had been shot in it. That med-x was appearing more and more appealing. He shielded his eyes with his hand, it did little to cut the light from his eyes. He was sure he looked like a damn fool. Today was going to be a long day.

He began his march, well not so much a march, it was closer to a crawl, toward the town square. God, I hate this town was the only thought filling his mind.

It was a mixture of curiosity and compassion that made Valentine nod enthusiastically. "I won't say a word," she promised again, pressing the tips of three fingers to her mouth in a tribal gesture. Stranger or no, Byerley had so far come across as a nice enough person, albeit somewhat withdrawn. And what harm could come from maintaining his secret? He did seem like some sort of disguised raider or someone who would be harmful to the town; she was inclined to trust her instincts on the matter. She hadn't survived so many years in the Wastes as a mercenary by blindly trusting others but there were certainly times when having faith in someone had paid off.

As it turned out, this was one of those times.

She was, initially, too stunned to speak or react. She simply stared as if transfixed on the gleam of metal where skin ought to be, her eyes wide and mouth pursed tight in shock. When he spoke, she was able to tear her gaze away to pay attention. It wasn't until Byerley took up the bent Stimpack and bent its needle into proper form that her brain finally caught up.

"Scrapped?" Valentine mumbled, and then, more stably: "Scrapped? I don't think so! You're much, much more than a talking toaster!"

She took the chem back, jammed it into its pouch at her waist in a blur of motion before both of her hands latched onto Byerley's arm. She leaned in close to study his hand, fingers, and wrist. She was no longer incredulous, but amazed. Thrilled, even. "I never ever thought..." she released his arm only to frame his face with both of her hands, lightly molding his cheeks between her palms. On tip-toe, she peered intently up at his eyes. Any other Wastelander might decree Valentine as smitten dumb, but one of her tribe would know better.

Her mind had gone into overload contemplating the possibilities, to the point that she honestly couldn't get a single question out because there were too many to choose from. Valentine grinned at Byerley, too giddy to speak.

Being able to trust someone felt wonderful, especially after the duration without Shapiro dealing with most of the interactions with people.
It was wonderful.
“That’s good to know—I’m considered obsolete where I’m from…then again I never was considered to be cutting edge technology.” Q winced slightly when Val reached for his face; pleasantly surprised to find that she wasn’t trying to pull the skin off, but rather…he wasn’t sure what she was doing, to be quite honest. With her screwing his face up like that, it was difficult to speak, and the system wasn’t quite sure what to make of the tactile web’s information. He stared back, impassively—or as impassively as a man whose face was being smooshed around into ridiculous expressions—until glancing away. His eyes flickered in the light, optic sensors catching the dimlight of the battery-powered lantern on the desk. “Didn’t think what?” He managed, trying to smirk inspire of his unease.
“Were you expecting a ghoul or a talking death claw under the disguise?” The smirk faded when he glanced toward the door looking rather concerned. "Shouldn't we be going to that meeting? It may have started already."

"That's a good idea. I'll talk to Dean and see if anyone wants to do some lessons for any locals who could use a refresher on shooting, if we have the time before things get too... busy." Shawn smiled wanly. He was definitely among those who could use the lessons. He'd not had to fight nearly so much as others had in his lifetime, at least so far. He followed Stella's gesture to where the gecko had collapsed and shrugged a little. "Not much we can do to go out and fetch it... but that's something we need to consider, too. Guess an inventory of food and water is on the list of to-do's, too."

He was about to head off when Stella descended on him a second time. Shawn hadn't expected the affection from the redhead and it sent his pulse skittering once more. He grinned like a fool anyhow, and squeezed her arm lightly before he retrieved his shotgun and disappeared down the ladder without another word. He didn't have time to be contemplating Stella, and this certainly wasn't good circumstances to bring up dating or whatever. He rubbed his cheek and smirked, then did his best to put the matter out of his head.

He noticed Max not too far away at the ramp and offered the man a slight wave. Shawn felt a tinge of embarrassment--had the older man been observing the flailing-about in the watchtower?--but he had to be on his way. "I'll send Angus by with something for you guys to drink later," he called so both mercenaries could hear.

Then Shawn got a move on. He took the back lanes and cut through town from the blockades to the large, dusty Market Square not so far from the now shut-down mine. Only a couple of the plain wood-and-metal lean-to's that acted as vendor's stalls were manned, with one enterprising townswoman selling water, noodles and grilled meat for only a few caps. The Dustrunners had claimed another stall: their lead trader, Rickie, had opened up shop to sell what goods her caravan had brought in to town. They had ammunition, a few handguns and rifles, scrap parts, hides, and a moderate selection of medicinal chems and foodstuffs up for sale. Surprisingly, they hadn't chosen to mark up the prices, or at least Shawn thought as much as he eyed the hand-written cardboard sign that listed the unsold inventory.

Shawn took the opportunity to buy a pack of cigarettes off of Rickie. He had a feeling that the consumables would be a rarity if the siege went on, and he didn't much relish the idea of going cold gecko in the midst of the crisis.

He caught sight of Dean and perked up somewhat. Rather than approach the dais in the middle of the Square that acted as a sort of centre-stage, Shawn edged around it and came to stand beside the mechanic. "Morning. You're looking chipper," the blond remarked. He dug around in his pocket and produced a Pre-War relic--his brother's pocketwatch. A quick look told him that it was almost time to get the meeting going, but he decided to give it a few more minutes. "Angus is pretty exciting about the 'building project.' I think you can expect his help again today if you need it. He has a certain... fondness for hammering." The bartender chuckled and safely stowed his watch again.

xxxxx They were to have a town meeting this morning, Jody wasn't going to miss it, and she certainly wasn't going to miss out on the opportunity to gain the affections and attention of the men in town. Combing her fingers through her hair, crunching and adding volume to whatever degree she could. Eyes fixed upon herself in the remnants of the mirror in her room. A soft tone emitted from her throat as she hummed a small tune to herself. The young woman took up a tube of light red lipstick and began applying it carefully. Once she'd finished, the woman pressed her lips together and blew a kiss to herself in the mirror. With a smile, she checked herself once more, smoothing out the folds of her grey dress to the best of her abilities. She knew her dear 'aunt' was waiting for her downstairs and so with her make up complete and her hair done it was time to move out.

xxxxx Turning upon the heel of her shoe she tapped across the floorboards toward the exit of her room. She was greeted by Luce with a smile and a nod, to which she gave the same. Obviously dressed to impress, the girl moved out of the small shake with the older woman. As they walked together, Jody gave a quick check of her nails, picking at some of the dirt beneath them. She did not only wish to look her best for the affection and attention, but she was hoping to make a few more 'contacts' in the small town. No town is without their supplier, and Jody was determined to seek out who owned this 'territory'. If she were lucky to learn that no one was dealing here, or better yet, they'd died in that mine collapse and had a stash hidden somewhere, Jody just might have to make this her own little trading post. You know.. Once this whole raider business blows over.

xxxxx Or... Perhaps if it didn't.... Hmm...

xxxxx Attention turned from her thoughts when Luce began talking. Red lips turned upward in a smile, but she rolled her eyes a little bemusedly anyway. Looking back to the woman once more (she had turned her head away when she rolled her eyes, making it appear as though she had just been looking around at the town) the young lady smiled a bit and shook her head, those long waves of fire swaying with her movement.

xxxxx "I've plenty experience handlin' myself among shady men."

xxxxx Reassuring the woman in that usual sultry tone. Luce did not know that Jody had actually worked for the gang after she'd purchased her freedom (as far as Luce knew, she was a runaway slave) but even without this knowledge, knowing Jody grew up in slavery, it could be safely assumed the girl knew how to hold her own enough to survive just fine. When Luce when on to suggest that perhaps Jody had been enjoying late nights out over a young man, the woman couldn't help but laugh at the thought. Not that she was against the company of a warm body (male or female for that matter) in her bed (or in theirs), but Jody had been more occupied with establishing her place as Aunt Luce's dear niece first. She spent quite a bit of time with the woman, and they'd bonded quite well. In the event that Luce had become bedridden, it was Jody that took care of her during all that time. There had been a brief moment that Jody's dark past urged her to just kill the woman, it would be so easy, she would gain the sympathy of the townsfolk and could make it look like her time has just come and gone. But Jody wasn't a killer, not at all, she might have dealt drugs, cheated at high stakes poker, and screwed people over, but she didn't kill them. Not to mention she liked Luce! The woman both had a fondness for cards and a similar past. No, the thought was shaken off with an uncomfortable chill just as quickly as it came to her thoughts. Jody's hands were dirty, but not with blood.

                                            xxxxx"I wish."

xxxxxLooking back to her aunt, she smiled again, delicately placed a thread of hair behind her ear with a ginger digit.

xxxxx"Although I wouldn't mind finding myself a mild mannered man."

xxxxxLooking out at the dusty road as they approached their destination. She began to recognize the men off in the near distance.

xxxxx"So long as he can hold his liquor, can play a mean game of poker, and has a little bit of fire in 'im. I don't know, what do you think?"

xxxxxLuce had been living at Falls Creek a lot longer than Jody had, perhaps the woman had a better insight as to who might be an ideal suitor for the red head to approach. As they came closer those amber eyes noticed a familiar face also coming toward the square. Jody smiled to the sight of Daniel, and when she made eye contact with him the young woman was sure to blow him a playful kiss. Maybe if the man had been a good twenty years younger she would have been more his type. As it stood, the man was an entertaining fellow to hang around.

"Obsolete!" Valentine said with no small measure of indignity on his behalf. He was a marvel of technology, but beyond that, he was an independent entity obviously steeped in good fortune that deserved respect. The tribal finally released Byerley's face, but plucked up his hands for a second inspection. "And I didn't think someone like you could be real. I mean, certainly we--my family, my tribe--we had suspicions, hopes, that the pre-war research into artificial intelligence and advanced robotics could have survived, but as far as I know none of us ever encountered anyone like you. A talking deathclaw was my second guess," she added with a giggle.

She looked up from her scrutiny and smiled at Byerley yet again, not an ounce of her excitement or adoration gone. She had calmed from the initial shock and her mind was articulating itself again. "The skin on your face has to be a synthetic, but it felt pretty realistic to me and you have such delightful expressions. So what happened here?" She stroked the back of his forearm and appeared puzzled. His lower arms and hands seemed so starkly robotic in comparison.

Valentine released Byerley reluctantly, and sighed. "Wait--answer that later. You're right. The meeting is more important right now. We can talk more later... if that's okay with you!" She sincerely hoped it would be okay, but she told herself that boundaries needed to be respected. Nonetheless, Valentine struggled against her impulse to tug his head down so she could investigate his neck-joints--and ears, and hair, and--

Meeting. NOW. She clasped her hands behind her back and smiled. "Lead on, I guess we outta' hurry." She was prepared to follow Byerely...

And likely oggle him every step of the way. He'd been mighty fine to look at before, but now it was impossible not to!

There were Tribals that knew about and used technology just as pre-war citizens had? The thought came as a shock to Q as all he and Shapiro had ever met were dirty-faced people wearing bones and feathers who barely spoke English but seemed tolerable enough. “It’s a common thing back at the Institute. In fact a good deal of the population may be machine men by now. It’s…been a very long time since I’ve been home.”
As he replaced his gloves and adjusted the bandages so that any exposed metal was covered, he explained as best as he could. “It wears away over time if it isn’t replaced, not to mention blocking knives and other sorts of weapons tends to do a number on skin that technically cannot repair itself.”
The newer androids could perhaps bleed and heal just as a human would; he felt a slight sliver of envy at the thought as he recollected his hunting rifle and opened the door.
“I don’t mind… actually.” He had always imagined that it would be a terrible thing for someone to find out. Valentine’s surprising interest and fascination helped ease most of the worry—even though it still lingered.
It seemed that most of the other people within the ancient house had already left, as everything was silent and dim when he left his room. The elderly Greene wasn’t sitting in her usual spot.

Hopefully they weren’t late.

A lot happened that day without much really happening at all. Claire returned to her store without incident. It was a slow day. It wasn’t until the late afternoon that she heard there would be another attack from the raiders.

Of course the information didn’t sit well with her. If asked, which she wasn’t, how she felt about the situation she would have a very hard time putting it into words. She feared that the town would be sacked, but at the same time she believed the citizens to be capable. Most of the citizens in Falls Creek were fighters. They had been through a lot and they could take a little more. However, she worried that her faith in her neighbors was actually denial. Perhaps really, deep down, she knew that there was no hope for the tiny town. She told herself that it was perfectly fine to have a little doubt. People are always a little apprehensive in serious situations such as this.

She decided to spend the rest of the day getting prepared. There was quite the list of things that needed to be done before the fighting started. Claire needed to clean her guns and mend her old armor. She also needed to do something about the store. She didn’t want any hopped up raiders getting their grimy paws on her sweet store while she was out, but she didn’t want to sit on the porch clenching her gun watching the fight either. It seemed like the best course of action was boarding up the windows and doors and hoping for the best.

---

Claire woke up sore. She spent the whole day before on her feet making sure everything was in order. It was even harder to get out of bed than it was most days, but somehow she managed. As she dragged herself across the room to the dresser she started to think about the raiders.

She was never particularly afraid of raiders, even when she was younger. They never seemed all that threatening. Every run in she had with raiders she always came out on the winning side, although that couldn’t be said for the rest of her family. Really the thought of raiders just made her mad. It instilled an uncomfortable anger in her. An anger that she felt like she could barely maintain. She thought that by now she would be done being angry, but apparently she was wrong.

For a moment her mind turned to her old life, her old store, her family. She didn’t think of her family too often or she tried not to. She found that as the years went on she thought about them less and less. She couldn’t think of them too much, she wouldn’t get anything done if she did. It was easier to try and not think of them. Claire much rather suffer the tragedy of forgetting things about them than wallow in depression. However, she couldn’t forget about them even though she tried. She would be reminded of them from time to time. Usually it was a nice memory, like a few weeks ago a teddy bear made its way to the general store shelves and Claire remembered that her husband used to call her Clairebear. Today she wasn’t fortunate enough to remember a tender moment. Today she remembered seeing her old town in the distance looking disheveled. Her stomach sank as she got closer and closer to town. She didn’t run because she feared that she would be running into bad news, and she was right. Somebody stopped her and told her what happened before she made it to her store but she thought they had to be lying.

That was a long time ago and she couldn’t think about it right now. She put on her clothes slowly cursing her soreness along the way. She was running a bit late. Usually she woke up a bit later than this. She hoped that the day would come where she could sleep in again, perhaps when this was all over. Once she was done getting dressed she grabbed her things and left the store in a hurry.

It was brighter outside than Claire had expected it to be. It wasn’t exceptionally bright by any means but the inside of the store was darker than usual because the windows were now boarded up. It took her a moment to adjust to the light. She jogged over to the town square expecting the meeting to have already started. Luckily when she got there it hadn’t. The area was filling with people and she took comfort knowing that she wasn’t late.

The tribal turned over his words in her mind as she waited for Byerley to finish his preparations. The knowledge that more androids, some quite possibly more complex than her friend, existed somewhere was exciting but her attention didn't settle on those thoughts for long. She watched him rebind his hands and said, "it's good you keep covered, then, but it's unfortunate your hands had to get damaged so badly in the first place." She knew it likely hadn't hurt Byerley to lose the synthetic flesh of his hands and arms, but it was distressing to consider. She looked, once more, at his oil-stained pantleg, but he seemed to move without difficulty so she assumed he'd done something to repair or stabilize the 'wound.'

She grinned at him when he agreed to answer some questions later on. "I'll come by when there's time, then." Although her words were mild, she experienced a definite surge of elation at the prospect of learning more about Byerley.

Out-of-doors and on the road, the shorter Valentine followed her impulse and linked one arm about his as she walked alongside him. She didn't say anything during the walk, and she couldn't quite get her mouth to obey commands and stop smiling. The walk down the road from the Hotel to the Market Square wasn't very long, and since several other people were meandering along in the same direction, she forced herself to keep quiet and didn't bring up the subject of her companion's android nature.

By the time Valentine arrived with Byerley, it seemed like most of the townsfolk were situated in the dusty Square. There was a low level of noise from multiple discussions, and the tension was palpable. Since Stella would be on watch while the meeting happened, Valentine had no one to seek out within the crowd. She tightened her arm slightly on Byerley and directed him along with her to an unused vendor's stall at the edge of the gathering.

Shawn was drawn away from his discussion with Dean as more people arrived, including Angus. The bartender motioned to the mutant to follow him, then excused himself and left the mechanic. His green eyes were momentarily distracted by a motion off to one side, and he noticed a redhaired young woman blowing Daniel a kiss. He snickered at Daniel as he passed by, and refrained from commenting.

"Give me a boost, would you kindly?" Shawn asked Angus when the pair of them were in the middle of square, surrounded on all sides by the people of Falls Creek. He meant to point at a nearby wooden vendor's stall so Angus could transfer him there, but before he could gesture Shawn felt massive hands grab him, and his feet left the ground. He was swept upward, and found himself balanced on Angus's broad shoulders. Fortunately, the super mutant had the sense to keep a hold on the human's ankles, so he didn't topple.

Well, at least some of them are already paying attention, Shawn thought. He could see many familiar faces within the crowd, and he returned their amused looked with an abashed smile before he banished the expression in lieu of a much more somber one. He spoke with a raised voice. "If I could get your attention!" After a few minutes, the crowd had hushed enough that his voice would be heard by those present.

"There are other places we could all be, so I'll get to the point of this. Falls Creek is in danger, and the raiders are coming--they could attack us at any time." He paused to let several townsfolk boo their displeasure, but the seriousness of the situation led Shawn to pick up speaking again quickly. "Myself and several others have coordinated a militia, but it'll take more than some mercenaries to get through this. If you can shoot or have good eyes, you should consider signing up for shifts in the watch towers, or patrols. Check in with Dean Marston if you can help out with the building project."

Word of the preparations, watches and patrols had already spread, so what Shawn said was not new but served as a reminder. He continued on, saying, "while all of this will help to ensure our survival, what Falls Creek is in need of is a designated leader. With the deaths of Sheriff Kleins and Deputy McGraw a few weeks ago, we have lacked central leadership, strategy and justice. I propose that we remedy this, immediately, and elect a new sheriff before we leave the square. If anyone would like to offer their service to the town as sheriff, come forward now! Only do so if you're serious, too--this isn't a joking matter," said the man precariously perched on a super mutant's shoulders.

This was not a new process for the town. Those who stepped up would need to say a word or two about themselves and their intentions, all the while facing the scrutiny of those assembled. Some discussion about past merits or problems may be proposed before the townsfolk gave their approval--applause, shouts of praise and so forth--or voiced their disapproval, and sent the candidate on their way accompanied by a chorus of boos. Eyes had already begun to turn to ancient Missus Greene, the wife of a former sheriff; her opinion on local leadership was often sought whether she wanted it or not. The old woman glared balefully at those near to her.

“Indeed it is.” He resisted the impulse to look down at his hands, having lost most sensory capabilities when the synthetic flesh had failed. Still, there was a notable twitch from one of the fingers. “That is assuming there is a later. We may be too busy with patrols and further work.”
The walk was a fairly short, uneventful one. They were running late, but it seemed they hadn’t missed much as the young man on the supermutant’s shoulders had barely begun his dialogue. Valentine didn’t have much to stay but she stuck close by—very close, in fact, she had taken his arm as if trying to lead him along or some other biological being behavior that he hadn’t quite figured out yet. Leading it was, as she tugged his arm lightly in the direction of a small stand in hopes of getting a better view of things. There weren’t many of them, but the townsfolk did make a decent barrier that muffled the sound of Shawn’s voice. Valentine nudged him with a slight grin, raising her eyebrows. Q stared at her for a few seconds before realizing she wanted to either stand or sit on his shoulders to get a better view and perhaps more satisfactory listening range.

No matter. His back could take the strain, as could his legs. The man knelt so Val could climb up and get comfortable before he stood at full height again. This was perhaps what the supermutant fells like,he thought as he planted his feet firmly and held onto Valentine's shins. He could feel her fingers in his hair—no doubt she was doing more of her ‘studying’. She'd be disappointed to find the hair fibers wouldn't come out so freely as they did with human beings.
Movement brought his attention back to the crowd around them. The others seemed to take interest in Missus Greene with Shawn's words, and Q cocked and eyebrow slightly. Surely the townspeople weren’t so cowardly that they’d hide behind a decrepit old woman. Greene seemed to be formidable in her own rights, but Raiders were obnoxious grandchildren or easily cowled village idiots.
…is it likely anyone has the experience and credentials?” He asked quietly, genuinely curious as he glanced up at Val just as she tugged on the top of his ears. He frowned with another pull.
He wished she’d stop that for a few minutes—it didn’t hurt but it was certainly unnecessary.

Lucien busied himself in the Hole until it was time for the town meeting, and only noticed that it was beginning when from his nearly reclining position in the chair he noticed the steady flow of townspeople heading to the town center. Lucien's eyes ventured out the window and he frowned. For several days he had been preparing for the events that would be following, and especially since the last meeting he had with the barkeep and the others, Lucien knew what he had to do. He stood from his chair and reclaimed his weapons on the way out the door, soon following the crowd to the town square where the show was soon to begin. By the time Lucien arrived, a sizable crowd had already gathered and Shawn had already been lifted up onto the massive shoulders of the Town's favorite Super Mutant. Lucien approached quietly, making sure to keep his profile small as he listened closely to the Barkeep's words. User Image

Lucien made his way into the circle of townspeople as Shawn spoke, only pausing when mention was made of the selection of the new sheriff. Shawn mentioned that the town needed a leader, and now, before all the townspeople any potential candidates would have to step forward and announce it. This had been done many times in the past of course, and Lucien could already see why many of the townspeople would look towards their feet in awkward silence for some time. There was a brief moment of almost unbearable silence, and Lucien's heartbeat both became painfully fast and painfully hard. Anxiety creeped up in the back of his mind, and his patience finally ran out. "Damnit"... This was all too suspenseful for him, and in his mind, he had already made his decision. He allowed his eyes to fall to the ground, releasing a heavy sigh before focusing them back on Shawn and he began to move. From the back of the crowd, he made his way forward, gently pushing aside the townsfolk to pass through to the center. Once Lucien drew close enough, walking out into the dusty circle he spoke.

"I Volunteer"

Lucien allowed his voice to rise above the murmur of the crowd, directing their attention inward. In only a moment, Lucien could feel the eyes of the crowd, previously focusing on the elderly woman shifting to him. Several citizens backed away from the place where Lucien stood, giving him a clear line of view between himself, Greene, and Shawn, currently still on Angus' massive shoulders. Missus Greene was one many were easily intimidated by, and yet he was not the sort to be intimidated easily. Lucien offered the trio a reassuring wink before continuing.

Lucien cleared his throat, allowing his shoulders to relax and took a more assertive posture. His eyes ventured between Shawn and the Missus, allowing it to settle in before he spoke again. "I would like to offer my own service and take the position." Stage fright had never been something Lucien had been particularly vulnerable to as used to so many eyes focused on him as he was, and he was confident he could do something with the position, though it had been a long time since he was an officer back at his Vault, and those years had worn on his once ironclad confidence. Despite all the eyes now on him, Lucien remained firm and his voice didn't once waver, he had thought this over many, many times since the old sheriff passed. "Many of you likely know me, I have lived here for years, and more than once I have stepped up to help protect this town and it's people, to protect the people and the town I have come to care for..." The Amber-Eyed male allowed his gaze to move over the townspeople, gauging their reactions to his words. Already quite a bit of murmurings of approval had arisen, it was positive, and enough for Lucien to speak more. Lucien gestured, bringing his gloved hand up to the leather strap of his rifle's sling. "I have both experience in leading men and am capable when the bullets start flying. I believe I have at least proven that much within my time in this town and have the qualifications you need to be your Sheriff, a duty I would be honored to accept if you, the people of Falls Creek accept me" Lucien turned towards the townspeople before delivering the finishing line of his little speech. "I may not have been born here; but Falls Creek is my home... and I will defend it and it's people with my life." The clarity and conviction in his voice was sincere. Lucien meant the things he said and that much was obvious. In his mind he was the best candidate for the position.

Lucien looked back to the others, offering a confident smile, now it was time for them to decide. His heartbeat didn't grow any slower... This might have been the chance he had been looking for for all these years; a chance to finally do some real good.

Dean never considered himself grumpy or unapproachable, as it was his way to help others whenever he could, but he had been told on several occasions that he often looked that way. Unfortunately the mechanic often looked moody, particularly while thinking or concentrating. Given his profession he did a lot of thinking and concentrating, but also his natural concern for others caused him to form this expression as well. Fortunately those who knew him well teased him to no end for it. Right now Dean was wearing his trademark expression while examining the faces of the people gathering for the meeting. He couldn't help but evaluate the state everyone appeared to be in and wonder if they were prepared to survive what was to come. How many other friends like Pascal would be lose from this small community. Sadness coated his eyes when he noticed a shorter female with blonde hair nodding in his direction. Dean was terrible with names, but he returned the gesture. But since she made no attempt to come over and talk to the handicapped mechanic he went back to brooding.

Shawn was the next person to pull Dean out of his thoughts. At first Dean just blinked a couple of times at the bartender, like didn't comprehend what the other man had said. But slowly the mechanic's subconscious played back the words he thought he had missed. Confusion was replaced with a smile, "I see, well no complaints here. It's rather handy having him around." Dean formed a proper grin, with a little effort, and then ran his fingers through his hair in some sort of embarassment. Maybe Shawn had noticed that the slightly older man was trying too hard to put on a happy face, and hide the fact he was expecting the worst. He didn't have to worry for too long as Shawn stepped up, comically, to the attention of everyone and started the meeting.

While Shawn spoke, Dean merely listened and didn't join in with the town folks banter and rallying. He didn't know if it was his thoughts from earlier that held him back or just old habits from a former life. Even when the next stage of the meeting came around, a new sheriff came around the mechanic remained stoic while others started whispering about potential candidates. Everyone fell silent when Lucien spoke up, and delivered his speech. Personally Dean didn't need the speech. He already knew what sort of man Lucien was and that he was equipped to do the job. If they needed a sheriff then Lucien was a good choice. A few other people spoke, and Dean caught the eye of Shawn and nodded his affirmation. It wasn't that the mechanic wanted to keep his 'vote' private, he just wasn't used to speaking aloud in large groups and currently there was too much chatter going on for him to warrant trying. Once the decision was made, Dean waited for his 'workers' to gather for today's tasks.

xxxxxxThe man had appeared to be brooding over something, although she couldn't really blame him, there was quite a bit going on right about now. The source of the Dean's distressed expression surely must have been the topics that were meant to be presented during this morning's meeting. As the people began to gather around, her attention had drifted from the smile she offered Dean upon his gesture back toward her and instead shifted to the others around them. Her dear 'roommate', Q appeared arm in arm with the young pink haired woman she had seen briefly before the door had slammed shut earlier. Ally pursed her lips a bit and held back a smile. It was sweet really. Nice that two people can find love among the war and chaos of this world. Ally never pictured herself the type to end up that way, not that she was oppose to it, but she didn't exactly see an opportunity to pursue relationships. Either that or she was simply too blind to notice when opportunity was knocking at her door.

xxxMoments later her attention was drawn off of them as a figure moved higher into the air above them all. Her eyes turned and rested upon Shawn standing up upon the mutant's shoulders. The male mentioned starting a militia, and asked for volunteers. That was exactly what Ally had come for. Dressed and ready to go, she hoped to speak with Shawn after the meeting about signing up and doing her part to protect the town. In fact, the more the she thought about it, the more she got excited about it. Bring on the fight, she was growing a bit antsy sitting around and waiting for something interesting to happen. She wouldn't mind spilling a bit of blood for the greater good.

xxxAnother calm breath came in as Shawn pressed on to the topic of needing a new leader. Reminding all of the unfortunate death of the sheriff and deputy and suggesting the town elect a new leader immediately. The girl quickly looked about the crowd, gauging their faces. Fear, anxiety, depression. These people were not leaders. Ally's eyes once more turned to Shawn from where he stood, and she followed his line of sight to Missus Greene. The woman looked all too irritated to have attention on her. The people around shifted uncomfortably at their feet, looking in all other directions but the ones that mattered. Avoidance. Those few seconds of silence lingered uncomfortably as the woman herself was forced to look back at her own credentials. She knew a thing or two about leading a team of people, especially in the heat of battle, but to lead an entire town? Ally had no real interest in taking up the position, but if no one else was going to step up to the plate she was going to have to. Drawing in a breathe, the girl had parted her lips to speak up when sharp eyes caught movement from across the circle. It was Lucien.

xxxThe man approached and volunteered himself as the new sheriff. The blonde had found she'd already partially stood from her seat at the bench in preparation to volunteer. She continued her movement to stand, and let out her breath in a relieved sigh, knowing she would not be volunteering herself. Ally was a stranger to the members of this town, having only been here a few weeks and mostly keeping to herself, she was only going to volunteer if no one else was willing. The small blonde gently pushed herself through to the front of the crowd to watch as Lucien addressed them all. His confidence was comforting, yet oddly familiar. Even as he had finished his speech and waited for the approval of the town, he did not sway in his stature. She respected his strength. In fact, she respected all of the men that stood strong in their position. The others that cowered would have put a frown upon her face, but her attention was all too distracted by the two men, elder woman, and super mutant at the center of the crowd.
