ANNAGÜL PADDEN - - - - - -

                            Annag nodded at the prince's plans, but they were stopped by Aster's arrival. He was asking about his book and her mouth shut tight. It wasn't a disgusting color, she thought, though kept silent. It was hard knowing what to say in front of Aster and if she said something like that, he might get mad at her. She succeeded in the first spell in hopes that he would tutor her in the dark magic because of it. Annag went away from the two boys back into some of the shelves of scrolls and stacks of books.

                            Unfortunately, she had already banished the spirit so she couldn't show him. Annag came running back with something held out in front of her, straight for Aster. "Book." She whispered and shoved it into his arms. Once he had his necromantic tome returned to him, she fled to the side of Rowan.

                            She leaned her hands on the edge of his chair to be close to him where it was somehow considered safest almost falling into his lap and looked over his shoulder at what he was writing. Rowan had designed his own coded system that even she didn't know.

                              “Wait what? I didn’t say that! Well... maybe I did but you can’t prove it!”

                              ▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄

                              Rolling her eyes at both Mira and Isaac's seriousness, Louisa is just about to actually get down to her training when her ears catch a faint, but distinctly familiar sound. Perking up, she swings gracefully into sitting position on the bar, and snaps her gaze in the direction of the approaching footsteps. She recognizes the moment her two companions have also taken notice of the sounds of approaching armor. Armor that is of course, attached to their resident highness, Katarina of Barenholt. Grinning at her friend, and rightful queen (in that order), Louisa grins widely before leaping off her perch. Doing a natural flip, she lands right before the other woman; it is only to the careful observer that her landing is not as effortless as usual, her action having caused a somewhat unpleasant twinge to run down her injured leg. Not that she let it slow her down much, as she pops back up.

                              "Kitty-Kat!" she calls by way of greeting, her demeanor completely unlike that of her two companions. She is at ease, and her outward expression is genuinely open... something which rarely happens when she is with any one else other than the three present. And it is through this expression that she demonstrates her respect, trust and loyalty to those around her.

                              "You finally talk those old farts into keeping up with the annual tradition I see... took you longer than usual it seems," she comments, pausing a moment as the other two speaks. She is curious as well, as to the exact date, and despite Isaac's question, knows that she at least, will attend. What better place for an informant to gather information, than when surrounded by foolish people and free flowing liquor? Though Isaac's question is too good not to comment on.

                              "Of course Kat won't be unprotected! She's got all three of us... the royal guards, the hired guards, and of course, the castle guards stationed at Barren Plains itself. Though I suppose on the journey there, it would be best for us all to share a carriage... to keep Kat safe... "Louisa trails off slightly here as a mischievous glint appears in her eye, which is currently turned towards Isaac.

                              "And to keep you from drooling all over her lovely evening gown of course~" she finishes with a laugh, as she skips around to the other side of Katarina, just in case Isaac decides to show his displeasure.

Alessandra "Lessa" Fiori

Lessa knew the disarming motion would bruise and hopefully incapacitate his sword hand, which would give her advantage. The position would also give him advantage. The disarming had to work. She could feel the wearied sweat on her brow as it caught the cold wind. The mana drained, she could only fight the old fashioned way. Without the strength of her spirits, her normal was tired from the battle before and the travel from her home here. The disarming worked, bruising the inside of the man’s wrist. He also took the advantage she left open. Using the free arm, the man wrapped it around her and pushed a blade her neck. She could feel the leather of her hood pushing inward and the sharpness of the blade starting to cut through it. She closed her eyes as she waited to join the spirits. It almost pierced the leather but he decided against the quick kill.

The man pierced her shoulder where her wounds already lay, releasing her throat. She felt a cough as the air returned to her. She grabbed his arm before he released fully. She bent forward to use the momentum to toss him over her. He tumbled right back to his feet and jumped back. She stood up as the sting of the slice came over her. She actually let out a small call of pain, as the poison stung through her veins. The weight of the world seemed to fall on her shoulders, as she fell to her knees then off to her right side. She could barely move. Only her involuntary movements worked normally. She felt the cold air on the sweat of her body. She felt her body shiver as she lay on her side. “Why do you keep me from my spirits?” Not a why did you do this but why did you take them away. They were with her for her whole life. It was so silent as he took her power away. Then he took away her chance to join them.

Victoria sat waiting at the large table, the food in front of her laid untouched. The grand cherry wood table stretched ahead of her for what seemed like an eternity. Surrounding Victoria was the great expanse of a ballroom of which was decorated luxuriously but if one inspected it closely they would notice a thin layer of dust. This place hasn't seen a party in years. With a frown Victoria shoved her food away and stood abruptly, "They've got another thing coming if those damned people think they can keep me nice and tucked away." Rage coiled inside of her, like a serpent being pestered to long and soon it reared up to strike. A tight fist struck the table and Victoria grabbed up her cloak. Throwing it on she stalked out of the room, leaving behind the hallow shell that once was filled to the brim with happiness, laughter and dancing.

Alone

Really it was all she knew and growing up the interaction between her siblings was little to none. They all had their duties, and they did so without question. Staying at that castle reminded Victoria to much of her isolated existence. The servants avoided her and the butler greeted her with a frown at the front door, "Ma'am was the food not to your liking?" Victoria waved him and offered a smile, "Unfortunately I'm not feeling hungry at this time. Maybe later. I just want to get this over with." It had been a few years since the civil war and she could still taste the copper on her tongue from the blood of the men she slaughtered. Killing was never a problem with her and it was as easy as snuffing out a light on a candle. Their agonizing screams and the wailing of their wives were music to her. The gunfire the drums and the clash of the swords the violins in this orchestra of war.

Easing herself into the carriage, Victoria clung tightly to the cloak draped over her shoulders. It was a feeble attempt to preserve whatever warmth she had left. With a great lurch the carriage drew forward. Each bump and jerk jarred her body and bruised her human flesh. The carriage was heavily protected, twenty men on horseback surrounded it. Ten of which brought up the flank and then the rest guarded the front. Assassination attempts on her life were frequent. It would only take a few days to reach the border of her brother's land and then a few more to the castle. Lips pursed, Victoria surveyed her kingdom. Wild plains rolled out of existence on the horizon and people dotted the fields they farmed. Framing their land was a great, noble mountain who's peak reached up towards the heavens. It was beautiful country and she counted herself more lucky than her eldest sister who ruled the freezing and unforgiving northern region.

-----------TIME SKIP FORWARD----------

Gahariet's castle drew nearer and nearer until finally they approached its gates. The carriage came to a sudden stop and Victoria's butler walked around and helped her out. With a groan she stretched slightly and then took a moment to observe the area. People nervously passed them and hurried quickly away. Victoria erected herself to her full height of 5'6 and jutted out her chin. There was no mistaking who was in charge here, "Pack your weapons and dismount your horses men. You will lead your beasts in and you will do your best to act like honorable men. Do not dare intimidate any of his people. ******** one wench in this castle and your member becomes a trophy mounted on a plaque in my personal quarters." Nervous shifting and grunts was a good enough response for her. They never took her words lightly and they knew she meant what she said. "Hail Gahariet, he should be expecting us." One of the men nodded and drew up to the gates separating the castle from the town and in hushed whispers spoke with the guard. The guard sent for one of the messengers who then turned to find Gahariet and announce his sisters arrival.

"Yes....your highness...." She said simply, his words were thoroughly sobering, cold and cutting. It made sense, from what she had seen. He was an excellent lover, a quick thinking ruler and cold on the inside. He looked to others to somehow warm his empty soul but Kira knew the truth, and with a slight bow, she let herself out of his chambers.

She resigned herself to remain on his council and offer him guidance where she could. She would live a life of luxury, thus would be enough, wouldn't it? Without answering that question, she wandered down the halls until she found herself in her own chambers, the fire still lit as if it was taken from her own heart. Her heart burned for him, she did still want him but there was no future with him, only a cold, short life. He'd always leave her wanting more.

Her slender form sunk into the bed, tired from the days events, from the fortunes, to the past. Sleep took her quickly, even her nightmares stayed at bay. Tomorrow she would go to council with him, then she would meet his younger sister. Shivers ran down her spine, there were rumors through out the kingdom of that woman. Kira was not blind or deaf to them. She would have to tread lightly around that woman, if she dared tread at all.

,

Despite the question he posed, the prince went chattering off about the ball that was going to be held soon. Dates, tailoring, escorts and the like. He understood that it meant Rowan did not have the answer to his question, but Aster still found it annoying. A question was still a question and a simple 'I do not know' would have been fine. But he was young. He would hopefully learn with time. With this in mind he decided to humor the prince and answer his questions since it meant no one was trying to summon undead warriors that would chop them into little bitty pieces, as both potential summoners were standing in the room.

"Lessa? My prince, I am not certain that is a wise idea. I understand you are fond of her, but for your sake and hers it is better if she stays hidden. If she is found out, her profession and life could hang in the balance. He said with a frown. Rowan had a certain liking for her, and Aster could not argue with it. She was strong and silent, and had a certain melancholy about her that reminded him of his own. Rather than bring him down, it was comforting to know someone else had been through turmoil as he had. He knew Rowan wanted Lessa to come and enjoy the ball with all of his court, but her life was a main priority to all of them. However, if the young prince insisted (and he always did, a very needy child) he would find a way to cater to his wants.

At the mention of his brother, Gahariet, Aster coughed a bit. Aster looked to Rowan's face to see what he meant by his comment, but it remained ambiguous. Damn.
"...Yes, meet your brother. I think it would be in our best interest to forge an alliance with him. He has access to gold, an army, and most importantly, protection--" He paused, remembering a very annoying tidbit about his political situation, "--unless, of course, the little birds in your ear decide to take flight with their own ideas." He said bitterly. He understood Rowan's advisors had access to the supplies they needed to remain a threat to the other three, but they constantly conspired against Rowan and seemed to have plans of their own that directly sabotaged Aster's. Not to mention they failed to call him for strategy meetings, despite him being The South's tactician. They all claimed he was much too young to be gambling with the lives of thousands, Aster said they were much too greedy to be having anything to do with planning this war. If the alliance with Gahariet all went as planned, he could hopefully pay all of them off so they would step down from their positions.

Rowan then left to write something down, Annagul looking bashful and the slightest bit guilty. He raised an eyebrow. She'd kept quiet up until now, which was a strange occurrence given her usual demeanor. She ran to a shelf in the library and pushed aside books until she found the one she was looking for and came running back to Aster. She quickly gave it to him before fleeing to Rowan's side, as yes, it did turn out to be the book Aster was looking for.

"Anna. You cannot take books from my room without my permission. Especially this one." He pointed to the book as he was talking--"You could have been killed, or killed someone else." He said sternly. He understood she was curious and interested in necromancy, but it was not something to play around with like a toy.

He allowed himself to relax as she fell limp to the ground. He examined his sword hand and flexed it. It would be a fortnight before he was back in top shape. He cast his glance toward the woman prone at his feet as she spoke.

"In time, my dear. Let's get you out of the mud." he spoke. He picked her up gently, avoiding her injuries and propped her against a tree. He used some bandage from his supplies and bound her wounds on her shoulder. He then slung his cloak over her shaking form. Within moments, he had a fire lit and sat opposite her. He could see the faint glow of dawn and didn't foresee any threat from his firelight or smoke.

"Now to answer your question, I assume your spirits are your source of power. They will return to you in time. I have simply built a barrier if you will. Now, my turn to ask a question: where is the map you took?"

Lessa could finally feel the cold of the coming dawn as her body lay in rest. She could feel the damp earth sticking to her arms, legs and cheeks. Her piercing eyes staring right at him as if she was at no disadvantage. She didn’t want to show weakness, even without motion. She had no choice but to let him lift her over to a tree and lean her on the trunk. Her eyes didn’t leave him a moment, watching every motion even as her skin shivered. He told her she would have wait for his answer. She hated waiting, so her eyes squinted slightly. She could do nothing but watch him bandage her shoulder. “What are you doing?” She asked him her lips trembling from the cold. Her eyes never left his face or the movements of his hands. She didn’t understand why he would be bandaging her when she was just fighting him.

The man named Ebon then did something more surprising. He removed his cloak to put over her. It was already warm from the man’s body heat. She could feel the warmth absorbing into her body almost immediately. There was even the hint of the cologne the man wore on the material. It was subtle, which was a relief. Most entitled men doused themselves with it. It was gut wrenching. She watched as he made a fire, her eyes darting her crystal bow that lay in the mud still. His movement made her look back at him as he finally took seat. She felt her eyes adjusting to the barely brightening surrounding as the sun began to peek its head. Then the man spoke. He assured her that they would come back. The silence was irritating. Then he asked the pivotal question. Where the map was? “On the desk.” She said knowing that she had not taken it. She only made a copy. “Nothing was stolen, only traced.” She said bluntly. The answer was simple. She did not take it. Therefore it is exactly where it should be. She could feel the warm take the sting out of her cold joints.

When asked what he was doing, he responded, "I've been offered no coin for your head. You have fought honorably earned my respect. I daresay, you are the first in a long line of opponents who can make that boast. So, I have given you my name should you desire vengeance for your injuries. Else, since we are currently in neutral territory, I see no harm in sitting and talking."

He felt a pang of embarrassment at his failure to notice the map on the desk. However, he was in the middle of a duel and the desk was very low on his list of priorities. "Clever. Had we not found you, you would have made a clean escape." he said, admiring her skill a bit more. "Where is the copy? Who did you send it to?"

Lessa listened as he spoke, inwardly appreciating the help he offered. The warmth was most appreciated. The pain in her fingers and toes were nearly gone. The poison was still at work in her body so there was no movement except little things like her fingertips or toes. “You are a good fight as well.” She mentioned back to him the best nod she could muster. Then he went on to explain that she was the first in a good amount of time. “you are more persistent then most.” She mentioned as she started to see some of the sun’s glow on the buttons of his shirt. He gave her his name in case of revenge plots. The mind of a spy or assassin would say something like that. A soldier would’ve just killed her and been done. Then he spoke of how they were on neutral grounds and talking was not forsaken.

The ‘Cursed Witch’ could agree to that. “Then I shall give you the honor of my name. I am Alessandra Fiori. You will not find that name on any tablet, scroll or book. So you can look for me as ‘The Ancestral Born.’ That, is in many texts.” She told him. Though there would be no pictures or references of her in such texts. But there would be legends, prophecies and even the ritual used to evoke such person. She spoke of it with a sense of pride behind her words. There was a short paused as he mulled over the name before he spoke again.

This time he spoke of the map. Lessa could almost swear that there was a hints of rouge embarrassment on his cheeks. He hadn’t noticed. “Every detail is important, Mr. Ebon. Don’t you agree?” That was a small mocking of his embarrassment. Then he mentioned her escape would’ve been clean. “The rain did hinder me but, yes, clean was the plan.” She stared right at him, not challenging him but not afraid of him either. He asked the obvious question of who got the letter. “Variables are always in the making. Obstacles that try to block our plans.” She avoided the question at first as she heard a few feint whispers in her ear. They were coming back. “The answer is simple. I sent them to the receiver.” She told him flatly as her fingertips sunk in to the soil beneath her and the cloak. “I do believe that I hear an obstacle coming for you, Mr. Vagrant” She said as she felt a spirited hand grab around her wrists and then her legs beneath the cloak.

A smirk arrived as she saw him go back on alert. Her bow seemed to sink in to the ground. “Good morrow, m’lord” She said as all at once the spirit hands dragged her down to disappear in the ground with her bow. It took all of her effort but she managed to let the spirits take her to her heir’s castle, just outside the gates. She appeared in a dark magic circle burned upon the cobblestone. The guards immediately sent for help to take her to the medic and notify the heir. Back at Ebon’s campsite, she would’ve seemed to disappear beneath his cloak. Under the cloak would be the same dark circle burned white in the mud.

"Alessandra." he spoke wistfully as she was gone. He snuffed the fire and began his trek home. His poison will have worn off by the time he returned to his lord's estate.

~~~~~
He didn't break stride at the gates as the guards observed his battle-weary form returning empty-handed. Surely the rumours will begin to flow. he thought. No matter, Lord Gahariet is the only one who need know the truth.
He found his lord almost at once and began his report.
"Sire, the thief has escaped me. I have no further knowledge of her allegiance. She is far better equipped than I thought previous. However, Milord, we still retain ownership of the original document she copied. I suggest that we construct ambushes on each supply road and find which of your kin is responsible. We must do so quickly following the peace talks."
He finished and awaited anxiously to be dismissed. He knew that he must be present when his sister arrived, fearing any espionage, but was extremely curious about his mysterious acquaintance.
                                  As a potential heir to the throne, and the youngest in a family four, Rowan is very rarely told 'no'. With an intelligence as developed as his, he is questioned even less. And as a fourteen year old, criticism is something he definitely does not take well. Likely that is why he gets along so well with Annaj, who rarely questions him and seems quite content to go along with his antics; or at the very least, ignore them as her selective hearing is nearly as legendary as his. Of course, there's also Lessa, with whom he is rarely in disagreement. As far as his trio of companions go, that leaves Aster, the one with whom he gets into most arguments. The man was, after all, his mentor, and therefore there to guide and question him. He just has yet to develop the tolerance or appreciation for the fact.
                                  "Do you take me for a fool Aster? Of course I know Lessa needs to remain hidden! Hidden out in the open more like," Rowan snaps, turning back to his notes. He casts Annaj a disgruntled look when she leans into her, but otherwise allows it. In fact, he leans into her warmth a little himself, taking comfort in her presence, though he would never admit it. It only lasts a moment though as he nudges her towards the food left by the servants.
                                  "Last I spoke with Lessa, she is interested in something at Barren Plains. And with the security likely to be increased from the last peace talks, she is unlikely to get in otherwise. With all four remaining royals together, at such a critical time, the security will be phenomenal. You three will go in masks... as usual, they will attribute such eccentricities to the mind of a fourteen year old and not question it much," he adds with a sneer, writing a few more notes down before turning his attention to his companions.
                                  "Though.... I do admit, I have a few concerns. Lessa is rarely this off schedule, and she rarely contacts me without leaving word. Her identity may be compromised," Rowan concedes at last, pulling his bottom lip between his teeth, worrying them in a classic sign of his insecurities.
                            She was nudged away from him. Rowan and Aster were starting another argument, one which she was content to skip out of. Annag did not respond to his attempt at a lecture. She knew very well the dangers of magic and was careful, not to mention successful. It was not something she could claim yet if he was that displeased about a borrowed book. She wouldn't mind if he took one of hers. Not that he would, but the opportunity was opened to him so she didn't think it fair he kept those from her. Annag attacked the plates of food that were brought by the royal servants, remembering how hungry she was.
                            A bread roll and some cheese was stuffed into her mouth as she looked between Aster and Rowan from her seat on the edge of the table. They were talking over Lessa and the plans for the peace talks. Something about masks though her mind wandered to her necromancy spells and the tomes she might look for in the library. She knew where a few were located, tucked away in the back by one of her fathers since not many would appreciate a dive into the dark arts. Annag wanted to conjure spirits, raise the dead, and blur the line between realms. It was just magic. She didn't see why it was so taboo for her, considering she knew that all magic was essentially the same and it only mattered how one used it.
                            As she ate and the other two argued, her mind was occupied with such thoughts that she readily agreed to anything Rowan said without knowing what exactly it was besides Rowan's idea. Annag swallowed the last bit of her food as a servant appeared. "Lessa has returned, my lord." They announced with a low bow to each prince and adviser. She was a simple girl with butter on her cheek.
GAHARIET - OF BARRENHOLT - - - - - -
                            Gahariet held his council in the morning. He introduced Kira as his Arcane Adviser, the woman who would help them acquire the mages in the South as allies, and went straight into the business of the freshly opened invitation to the Barren Plains. His elder sister, Katarina, wanted to meet for talks of peace between them. She invited all of them to neutral ground. It was a good opportunity to meet with his little brother. He was already speaking with his younger sister in the afternoon, though what about, he did not yet know and did not expect her to be seeking any peace with him.
                            The matter was discussed and they decided to all accompany him. The other five noble men, heads of the wealthiest families in the east and all connected in one way or another to lesser rich families, had their own guardsmen and such to take with them. It would be good to go together. And, of course, Kira would be going with him as well. Near the end of the council, Ebon appeared, returned from his chase empty-handed. The noblemen left the council room to see to their preparations for the talks.
                            He had known the maps were left behind, but they had been tampered with in some way. She must have copied them as he suspected. Ebon's report was received with a slight frown. "No. Now. I do not think they will wait for us to meet before making their move, especially if what they were after is my gold." Gahariet produced the maps the spy had copied and handed them to Ebon with some coin. "I have warned my caravans and seen to add to their protection as necessary. Take this and develop your plan, use decoys, whatever you must."
                            "I will be meeting my siblings in the Barren Plains with my advisers. You will be leading the ambush and protecting my investments. If you fail, this will hurt us all. I will have to rely on my allies and you know what their demands are like..." He rubbed his temple at the thought. They might try to get him to marry. "Go." He dismissed the man with his orders. Gahariet assumed they would be carried out as he had said, when he had said.
                            "Lady Victoria has arrived--" He sighed, waving off the announcer and going out to the hall to meet her halfway. She and a small number of her men were led inside the grand hall to have their talks.
                            "Victoria," He greeted her as usual. "Did you bring my ring?" Demanding the royal signet ring with the seal of the king.
Alessandra "Lessa" Fiori
Lessa felt two of the guards lifting her up and handing her to the one guard once they stood. She felt her body mostly limp in his hands as they rushed her to the medic. She was laid on the bed and the guards signaled back out. The medic went to work undoing the bandaging the ‘Entitled Vagrant’ did to her. The medic concentrated on sanitizing, sealing and cauterizing the wounds. The paralytic poison was helping to keep her still and mostly numb. As the medic sewed another wound his assistant smeared burn relief salve on the other wound. The assistant also gave her herbs in her mouth to keep her numb. Lessa chewed it and held her breath as the medic cauterized the other wound. The assistant put salve on that one as well. The medic held her hand up and dropped it. The hand fell right down to the table.
“She’s been poisoned.” The medic said and told the assistant different ingredients to grab. Lessa chewed the herbs more as she watched the medic work. She could clench her fists and rotate her ankles now. “It’s wearing off, sir” the assistant told him. “Temporary paralysis potion” He told the assistant. “Probably entered through the wounds. On a blade perhaps.” Lessa nodded in agreement. He gave her a green liquid to drink. She drank it down and slowly started to feel her extremities. The liquid seemed to hasten the healing. The medic finished the wrapping as the assistant moved her limps to give her the feeling of movement. The medic told his assistant to finish up. She nodded and after a few minutes she had cleaned Lessa’s face and helped her up, helping her to her room. Then had them draw her a bath. Lessa took a long bath avoiding her new wrappings. She washed her long dark hair as servants washed her clothing. They brought back her clothes and she shooed them away.
After they left, she pulled herself from the bath and dried herself with a towel. Her hair was down to her waist and was not seen often. She braided her hair then hooked her braid in loops to conceal her hair. She put on her top and pulled the hood over her hair, only leaving part of her bangs visible. She pulled her shirt on then her gloves and pouches. She felt the hole in the neck of her top where the knife nearly took her life. She shook her head. Not Again. She made a few adjustments to her belt before she moved out to see her heir about the message. Her shoulder was fresh bandaged. At the door she knocked lightly and put her arm to the opposite shoulder, before bowing low to them. She would remain that way until she was addressed.
