Welcome to Gaia! ::

Whitescarver, I find your remarks to be both distasteful and childish, but this is not the place for an argument. If you want, we can argue over private messages.

I like the way that nobody seemed to have responded to my post. -_-; Also, there doesn't seem to be any of the expected response, although the thread has been going along in this direction for at least a few days. Busy lives, or just not willing to risk drawing some fire?

Trying to parcel the blame won't do any good, and neither will making any of the unnecessary comments that don't either better the game or better the friendly atmosphere which, on occasion, this thread (and the prior one) managed to achieve. It's a bit sad that it came to this, but maybe it was inevitable. Now the only thing to do is move forward, or move on.

CONTINUE?

Is there a maybe option?

In my own opinion, I'd still have to favor the numbers, just because it allows for greater precision. While we won't be going into the dice-rolling/random nature of D&D - I've lost a few characters when the dice just kept giving me ones, and I'd rather not re-open that trauma - I think the 1-5 or 1-10 system is a bit more common-denominator than "Very Strong" or "Weak" because again, everyone has different ideas of "Very Strong" and "Weak." Like I said before, if one person's "Very Strong" is 'lifts his own body weight' and another's is 'can throw a planet into the Sun,' then their "Very Strong" characters will be operating from different parameters.

But, most cases probably won't be so obvious or extreme. If someone is "Strong" and another person is "Very Strong," how much of a difference is there? What's the difference between (picking up from your example) "Medium" and "Moderate"? Whereas someone with a Strength of 5 could still concievably put up a fight against something with a Strength of 6, using modifiers such as leverage, special techniques, ect, and know that he'd best come up with a non-brute-strength approach to someone with Strength 9.

Of course, most games that use numbers to denote ability usually comes with additional vocabulary to describe them, i.e.

None - Dead
1 - Weak
2 - Poor
3 - Average
4 - Above-Average
5 - Superior

(in an imaginary 5-points system)

so it really comes down to ease-of-use, as all of the abovementioned systems are in place to make deciding fights, battles of wits, and so on easier on player and GM alike.

I do see your point, but personally I have been in quite a number of RPs, some good, some bad, and we seem to get along well enough without a numbering system, based on character profiles and mutual agreement. Personally I prefer it this way. I fire a shot let's say, and then I write my post such that it allows the person I am attacking to decide if the shot hit or missed and now much damage it did. Then it is assumed they do the same for me. Assuming we have no god modders in the RP, it usually works out well. It allso allows a lot more writing freedom.

Not my problem.
By the way, my bad, I had no clue you were so much better than me.

Hegemon: I think for "maybe" you highlight the "/" and hit [Enter].

GS Parallel Mercury: Point taken, of course, but that's a bit beside the point now: Chief has made it quite clear in his latest post that there will be numbers, presumably spanning the traditional tech-spec stats, but that they'll just be general guidelines, so the should-we/shouldn't-we have numerals involved is kind of moot.

Whitescarver: Maybe he was being considerate? You know, for those of us who'd rather not have to skip over self-consciously snarky one-liners while trying to scroll through a page. I know, I know: Not your problem, yeah?
What else is there to say, Chief goes off like that and you expect anything more.
Why should I care if he doesn't? Or should I had been more constructive in my opinion
and whatnot, maybe given you a long, thought out wall of text of just how pissed off I
am after read such? Besides, most of his aggravation was directed at me so I have a
right to be upset about all this s**t.

Well, I'm not allowing this to dissolve into another Gooey mess of cursing; not unlike many net forums right before TF the movie came out last year. Forget this quibbling, then. I'm with Cheif. His rules sound nice and solid, and whatever he so kindly creates is good enough for me. you can stand where you want, but I will be there, in pretender mode, with warp missles armed and Null-rays primed; for slag's sake.
The one thing we can agree on is....
WE. ALL. ARE. TRANSFORMERS. FANS!!!
So let's sit down, shut up, and listen, hmm? Cheif's Points ring true, I won't argue with him. I'll admit it even, I myself caused several sinking sub-arcs to splinter with my haphazard playing of Zero Point. That is about to change.
end of case. What Cheif direct from here on out is fine. If you all would doubt our effective "Rodimus Prime"...wellll.....
but as for me, If CudBoy choose him, then he knows what he's doing.
I'm done. No more disscusion out of me, except by special request. whee
'No hard feelings.

Hey, I've been here for a while and I haven't yet lost it, so I figure I can go a few more rounds before calling it quits. It's kinda funny if you think about it, after all: We're doing this for fun... right?

Remember gals and gents, this is

SERIOUS BUSINESS. rofl
Oh, by the way. It seems a civil war has been sucessfully started here. Very nice, now all we need to do is pass out the transformation cogs and we're set! all thos ewith cheif are Autobots, all those agianst are the decepticons! blaugh
Bang! bang! Zap! Powie!

What about everyone who's out for themselves? Who gets to play the hapless human faction?

Maybe this is the true drama inherent in Transformers: Pretenders! pirate

Beautifully put! I wish I had had the sense to say it that way. That system has always worked well for me in the past (except for this one time I threw what was meant to be a weak attack at a being who was practically a God, and the other player had the "God" explode...but that's beside the point rolleyes ), and I think the whole "stats" thing just adds an unnecessarily level of complication to things. Also, it could easily cause quite a bit of tension between players. I know that if I had placed stats for my Snarl character the way me and Cudboy designed him, there would have been so many tens and nines that I would have been flamed right out of the RP. sweatdrop Abnormally powerful characters do show up (though GM approval of them is a must), and stats would just shove that fact in everyone's face. The old method works fine, I think. Still, if Chief demands stats, I'll go along with it. 3nodding

Oh, and Whitescarver, please try to use the PM system to address some of your more negative comments, rather than posting them here in the thread. I agree that Chief's tirade was a bit much, but I can understand why he was upset. We were all demanding a bit too much from him, and while I would prefer that his vent hadn't been quite so, well, explosive (and smaller font would have been nice), it was justified. From now on though, I think we should all stick with the "if you don't have something constructive to say, keep it out of the thread" rule. wink

Although I might not have agreed with Whitescarver's opinion, I appreciate the fact he posted it in the thread. Like I said earlier (does anyone read those things?), I don't believe the PM system should be used as a primary channel for voicing complaints et al; no wonder Cubody's Inbox was always flooded, and I'm sure Chief's is faring little better.

Also, if you've got a character whose tech-spec is stuffed with nines and tens, at the very least you'd better have those numbers to warn the people playing less-powered characters. It's a small courtesy, right?

I'm putting this in very, very tiny font so that if you really didn't want to read this, you wouldn't be right now.

Because the world needs more outdated memes tied to relevant events. xD

Other version here; basically the same, though.
ook..

I'm gonna go try and kickstart my TF roleplay again while the flames and such die down, Cheif I'll still pelt you with ideas and such over PM.

someone give me a poke once all the flames have died down as I don't enjoy reading flames wars and such.
