Welcome to the OOC thread for Welcome to Court, an advanced literate roleplay based on the sex, lies, and intrigue of a medieval prince's court in a fantasy land.

Note: Most of the setting, country, and magical information is stored within the IC thread. This thread is strictly for recruitment and out of character chat. If you wish to read all the details of the plot and setting before joining, visit the IC thread to do so.



THE PLOT

Hello, and welcome to the Kingdom of Tuatha, where the court of Crown Prince Tomasin II awaits you. Young beautiful men and women, all vying for something. Scandal and gossip are their bread and butter, so you'd better beware.

The king has fallen gravely ill. He is confined to his chambers, bedridden. Unable to rule. Thankfully, his only son is of age to take over the day to day affairs of a kingdom.

However, with the king ill and the prince being the only male heir to the throne, the rule has become unstable. At court, dukes and lords with blood ties to the throne are conspiring to unseat the prince and take the throne for themselves, either by politics or by force. Abroad, allied and enemy kingdoms see this as a chance to take advantage of the prince's inexperience, and would attack his country in hopes of causing a war.

Politics, sex, money, power. These are the themes of our little drama.

March 12th - PROFILES finished! All members should be looking towards starting some intro posts in the coming week. I look forward to seeing them!

March 21st - Intros have now started! Anyone who needs help with formatting, please ask me, and anyone still looking for character placement needs only to check in with the thread. We'll find a spot for you!

Preparing for intros? All planning will be done in this ooc thread.

So far, our intros are planning out as such. The prince, sir knight, lord whitehall and the ambassador will be out riding. women of court (including the princess, duchess reglaf, and lady whitehall) will be enjoying mid-morning tea in the garden. A few characters will be milling within the castle, including the bard, the young knight, and possibly the sorceress. From there, the princess and lady whitehall may join the prince on the ride. More planning to come later.

There are nearly a hundred people at court, and hundreds of servants in the castle. One cannot possibly hope to create them all. However, there are some stars which shine more brightly than others, and stand out from the crowd.

Characters crossed out are reserved. Characters with first names and links are taken.

Only son of the king. Currently reigning sovereign while his father is ill. Attempting to establish authority over court and other countries to prevent a bid to take his throne. Is being encouraged by those around him to make a quick marriage to solidify his status.

Non-magical
Eldest child of King Tomasin. Should her brother die, she could use her unwed state to latch herself to a Duke or Lord and become queen. However, there are several arranged marriages in the works with allied countries. At 25, the court marvels that she has not married yet, but she was the favored daughter of the king and he was very particular about who she was engaged to. The prince may not be so picky.

Next in line for the throne. Personal rival to the prince, as he is the eldest cousin. Has a standing army on his lands that the Dananns have been trying to force him to disband for several years. May have his eye on the Crown Princess, knowing a marriage to her would make him King in the event of the other two male Dananns' deaths.

The duke's stepmother, having married the Late Duke Reglaf very young, when he was fifty. Now she is putting pressure on her stepson to make moves towards the crown, knowing that making him King would give her more rank and power. If her stepson won't satisfy her desire for power, she may find other avenues to the throne.

♝ Lord Erasmus Alexander of Whitehall

Magical
The closest friend and confidant of the Prince, they are first cousins and grew up together. Though he is married he is also the most famous womanizer at court, having multiple mistresses at a time. Were he able to garner a duchy, he would also be in line for the throne.

♝ Lady Silvana Adalind of Whitehall
20 years old

Magical
Wife of the playboy Lord Whitehall, but doesn't seem to care about her husband's mistresses. She may be using her beauty and wiles to negotiate with other members of court, to try and raise the Whitehall family name. This youth may come across as the naive bride, but isn't necessarily so.

The richest woman at court. Though she has no direct blood ties to the throne, marrying someone who did would give her great power and give them an almost unlimited supply of money to take the throne. The Prince himself might consider her, given that her funds in the royal treasury would help him to maintain his power.

♞ Sir Logen Madero Mazaro

Previously a relatively unknown knight, he recently defeated the dreaded Printemps Dragon and brought back the head for the king. In exchange he was made Head of the King's Guard, and given a great salary. Though he is new at court he may find himself getting used to the politics of it quickly, lest he be thrown to the serpents.

One of the few gentry at court, he has quite a way with the ladies. Flattery of the prince and anyone else has gotten him everywhere, and he may look to curry favor with a proper lady or the Prince to ennoble himself.

The crown princess's personal sorceress. She acts as a spy, healer, and priestess to the princess, bringing her news of court. She also spends plenty of time among the members of court, attempting to gain political power and prestige through whatever means necessary.

This diplomat is from Wythos, across the sea. As a man connected to royalty and the government, he could be swayed either way. The ambassador has remained mute about his current reservations for the prince, and if Wythos plans on honoring their treaty once the prince is king. He is however, happy to remain at court and make himself welcome.

A visitor from a neighboring allied kingdom (a different one than the ambassador's kingdom). She has come to learn the language and to perhaps find herself a husband from this land. She may have her eye on the prince, but really, anyone in a position of power will do.

The Chancellor (religious counsel) to the royal family, the priestess has been at court for a while. Though she isn't considered a "lady of court", she is nonetheless involved in the affairs of her masters. Despite the fact that she is bound by her duties to the Great Goddess of Tuatha, this woman may find herself more engrossed in politics than she'd care to admit. With her religious influence and the ear of the royal family, she would be a good ally to any, then again, who knows what a sorceress with a higher calling may choose. Her goddess, her prince, or her own gains?

This count has a deep dark secret. A fully trained knight of the realm, the count has been hiding the fact that he is actually a woman since he was 16. He grew up far from court, and only recently as a member of the King's Guard has he been invited into the prince's company. His loyalty appears to be for the crown, but he has been keeping mum on the issue of the succession. On the other hand, if someone were to uncover his disguise... well they'd have a very powerful blackmail tool against him. Being a knight is his dream, but a woman who went against the laws of education in Tuatha might end up a head shorter.

Since prostitution is outlawed within the boundaries of the castle, this lady instead sleeps with men (and women) for gifts and information. A closeted supporter of the Princess for the throne, she's sick of a patriarchal government that suppresses women and limits their freedom. She may appear to support the Reglafs or even Lord Whitehall, but make no mistake, she'll sleep with a man, but she won't let him order her around.

You should know by now that certain things are just not permitted. God-modding, romance and language above PG-13, absolutely stunningly perfect characters who do everything right. Follow the TOS and your own common sense. Below are the very specific rules about this particular roleplay.

Posts

I am considering this an advanced literate roleplay. This means that I would like a minimum of 3-4 paragraphs per post, or 4-500 words if you count that way. We all know by now that quality is better than quantity, so if you are having a bad day, and can't make that minimum, just give us something to respond to. No one-liners or single paragraphs. More than that is just fine.

This will be a slow-moving roleplay. I would like everyone to take a turn before other people continue their conversation. Turns will be established in the OOC thread, under announcements, so keep checking back until your turn. I do not think it is asking too much that we will require a post at minimum once a week. Every other day would be preferred, but after a week I fear I will begin to nag. If you desire a break from the roleplay, please find a way to extract your character from their conversations and requirements in order to allow fellow roleplayers to move on.

In addition, I expect all posts to include the following - a picture of your character and either a quote or song lyrics. That is the minimum amount of formatting I want. You are encouraged to make it an epic post full of fancy symbols, but if you have trouble with formatting, this is all I need. If you'd like some help on positioning, or even creating some great formatting, just ask.

Characters and Character Creation

To begin, all character images will be real people. Use B-list celebrities and below, or you can use Google to search for modeling websites (like this one). I would like two pictures for each character. I would like one picture to be a headshot. The reason for this is that I highly doubt you will be able to find a celebrity photo in period medieval clothing, so a headshot eliminates the need. The other picture can be whatever pose or outfit you'd like.

Preferably each person joining this roleplay will take on two characters. If you do not think you can do that, I understand and I won't force it. I created twelve characters, but I'd like there to only be 6-8 people who join the roleplay. Twelve separate people with separate roleplay schedules is just too difficult. That said, if you would please play a male and a female, it would be much appreciated. If you don't think you can it's okay.

When filling out the profile when that time comes, you'll notice that although I may specify bulleted list or paragraph form, I do not require a minimum number of bullets or paragraphs. If you want to keep a few secrets and reveal them later on, feel free to do so.

If for some reason you find my list of characters too restrictive, I am allowing one or two other creations to the list. The only thing I ask is that you not create a servant character, but keep it to middle class characters and above. The conventions of an aristocratic society will eventually cause any servant character to be fired, killed, or just ignored. Daughter of a rich merchant, yes, scullery maid, no.

OOC

Just like in all fancy shmancy roleplays, I would like out of character conversation to be carried out exclusively in the out of character thread. Absolutely no out of character commentary is to be put in your post. If you want to say something like [[sorry for the short post]] or [[this is a picture of what she's wearing]] just post it directly in the ooc thread. So, if you want to include a link to something, put it subtly in the post itself (example: She was wearing a stunning gown.)

Misc.

I would like to think that the following rules will never be enforced. But as the thread creator, I am required to make some rules regarding bad behavior and unacceptable posts. I do not want to ban anyone, but occasionally it must be done.

No roleplayer will be rude to a fellow roleplayer in ooc. The ooc thread will be free of flames and insults. Be polite and follow the golden rule.

If your roleplay posts contains any inappropriate content (violating TOS or just offensive to other roleplayers) you will be asked to edit it once. I will also ask you to edit a post if I feel that your post contains nothing that can be responded to. Please make sure that you create avenues for other roleplayers to join in. This sentence is here so that everyone who is actually reading the rules will know to title their PM "badger face".

All plot twists will be discussed first with everyone in ooc. We must all work together to keep the roleplay moving forward, so any jumps, events, etc that you'd like to implement must be shared first. I know this may eliminate the shock and surprise of such an event happening, but I'd much rather everyone be enjoying themselves than have one person who hates your idea feeling left out and therefore unwilling to post.
