tab ▶ Ariel was born into a very normal loving family. Sure her parents were a little more hippie-esque than your regular parents but they were happy. Muriel and Joseph had met in Ibizia by chance one summer and by even a slimmer chance, both lived in Colorado but in neighboring towns. They often joked that they were town-crossed lovers and were destined to meet and grew close over the course of that summer. With his charming wit and humor and her laid back nature, love blossomed in beautiful Ibiza and soon after, they were married. It turned out that Joseph's family, the Westbays were a very wealthy family from the town over. While Muriel's family had a little to no wealth but a secret hidden in her genes. Muriel was actually a werewolf and the werewolf gene that she carried was a recessive one and it was a coin flip to see if her child would be a werewolf. Joseph (or Joe as Muriel fondly called him) never knew of the other half of his Wife's life but understood that it was something she couldn't share with him. There would be times that Muriel would disappear for weeks but as long as she came back to him, which she always did, he could live content with the darkness. Ariel was born to Muriel and Joe 2 years after their marriage, a bubbly beautiful baby girl. In a blink of an eye, she was a teenager and a rebellious one at that. See, Joseph's family was quite wealthy and when he married a dirty poor girl with an unknown name, his family was very angry. He was the eldest, the one to inherit the Westbay fortune but with his marriage to this nobody, he had ruined arrangements they had made on his behalf to marry him to another. Joe couldn't care less about his family fortune and viewed that he was already rich, and much richer than his kin for the love he had in his life so they got by with the profits from their art supplies store, The Yarn Barn, which they also happened to live above. Muriel and Joe were never materialistic and their art supplies store provided for them so they had everything they needed. Until one day, Ariel told them that she was leaving.
Ariel didn't like living in the cage of Morrison Hollows, seeing the same people day after day and she felt like her wings were clipped when all she wanted was to spread them and fly away. She had applied to a modelling agency in New York in their annual fresh face contest and won. It would be a whirlwind over the next few weeks but Ariel moved out of her childhood home and hometown to the concrete jungle and embarked on her modelling career. Morrison Hollows was always present in her life though. Whenever she could, she made sure her best friend, whom she had met in Morrison Hollows as a child, Poli'ahu or Poli, would come visit her on location wherever in the world she was. Ariel's career took off like a rocket. All it took was one designer to become enamored with her look and suddenly she was one of her division's most desired runway models for the same kind of look, cause boy were there a lot of blonde hair blue eye-ed girls running around trying to find work. Everything for Ariel had changed so quickly. The small town girl had been thrown in the one of the World's most cut throat industries and between her agent and the demands of the designers, Ariel felt she had no control over her life and that's when her anorexia first showed it's ugly face. Over the course of the next year, Ariel would steadily lose weight. She felt like the only thing she could control was her body and her calorie intake. She denied it to all that asked and put on the mask. The tailors would turn a blind eye to her illness as long as she was not over weight, they did not care. She waved off her parents' concern and told them they were worrying about nothing that was, until she collapsed on a runway in Milan.
It was the middle of Fashion Week and she was to be a headliner when she collapsed. She remembered feeling unwell but didn't think any more of it other than the jitters and then the world spiraled around her and she remembered the gasps as she succumbed to the darkness. The next thing she could really remember was being in the hospital, all the beeping and monitors around her and her parents. Their faces, the tears and the worry lines that had etched themselves into her mother's face and that was that. The Westbay's took their baby girl home to Morrison Hollows where they could keep an eye on her and help her recover.
Ariel was starting to get better, she really was. She had picked up knitting to combat the anxiety and the thoughts that would come crashing back whenever she least expected them to about her anorexia. Whenever she felt the need to count the calories, she would funnel that energy into knitting hearts and remembering all the things her parents loved about her. Whenever her demons tried to resurface, she would try to out scale them in the great outdoors on the face of a cliff or a mountain, rock climbing. Sure, she missed the glamour of the Model life but it was nice to be home with her parents and to feel the love that they so readily offered to her unconditionally everyday really helped her. But no one gets to be happy for forever right? They told her it was a freak accident that speed wasn't a factor and it was simply 'an icy road in winter' when her parents lost control of their car and dove head first into a tree. They were declared dead upon impact and they didn't even make it into the ambulance. Ariel can still recall the hot sting of her tears as she collapsed beside them in the Morgue, identifying their bodies. She could remember the rain that soaked through her clothes as she stood alone at their funeral as they were lowered side by side into the ground and she can recall losing the will to live. Her parents had been such a big factor in her recovery that without them, it felt impossible.
It wasn't soon after when a patron of the Yarn Barn found her collapsed on the floor of her shop, having inherited it after her parents' passing. Ariel remembers staring at the ceiling and counting the tiles and debating whether she should even try to get better at all. In her darkest hour, whether they were there or not, Ariel felt the warmth of her parents' love and the heaviness of their sorrow on her shoulders should she give up like this and she steeled her resolve and promised their memory that she would get better. It's been a long road to recovery and she would say she's still on it, but the thoughts that plague her each day are no longer so loud that she can't hear her own voice anymore.
Ariel runs the Yarn Barn and is determined to make it a thriving business. She hopes to one day be able to scale Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro but until then, she'll be in Morrison Hollows, knitting her hearts and trying to keep her demons at bay.
