What is Heaven or Hell?

Heaven or Hell is a team based role-playing fighting tournament created by Leviathan Stadium.

Based off the King of Fighters video game series, it is a showcase of talent from all around Gaia, with fighting at an equal number of diverse venues in many well-known and unorthodox locations. The tournament's end is always held at the Stadium itself.

Heaven or Hell can make the claim to being the original, as well as one of the best. Its success brought on others to host their own tournaments for a different group of fighters of different styles, but most mimics are either winners in their own small niche, or unfortunate failures. Many have tried to emulate the intensity of battle, the hype of the crowd, the fighting system, and the feel of the tournament, to varying degrees of success.

It is widely known that most fighters from other mimic tournaments migrate to Heaven or Hell to experience the source firsthand. And this year, we've added a new flavor of awesome.

What are the rules?

Thread Specific Rules

  • 1. Do not upload, post, discuss, or link to, anything that violates the Gaia ToS. This will be severely punished and strictly enforced.

  • 2. Do not post the following: trolls, flames, uncalled for catchphrases, rants, indecipherable text. Shitty posts don't make a good thread.

  • 3. Remember: Being here is a privilege, not a right. We reserve the right to delete content and remove users for any reason at any time.

  • 4. Posts should be as "quality" as possible. Interpret this as you will.

  • 5. Posts should remain on topic and stay in theme with the topic (sub-topics). Don't post errant material.

  • 6. The posting of personal information is discouraged. In addition, blatant advertisement that is not related to HoH is not welcome. Our lawyers are standing by.

  • 7. Discussions should not devolve into a flamewar. Constructive criticisms are both allowed and welcomed. Inciting or encouraging such disruptive activity will not be tolerated.

  • 9. Quote trains will not tolerated. After a warning, train conductors can expect to be removed. As a rule of thumb, posts should not have more than two or three quotes, depending on the size. Also, try to restrict quoting long passages of text.

  • 10. Absolutely no lolcats. GOD HELP YOU if you post lolcats.

  • 11. Before you ask any questions: Read the Codex. Read all available posts and links about Heaven or Hell on the front page. It will probably answer your question.

"We are the law."
Who's in charge?

The following people are the tournament staff, and otherwise have pull in this thread. These are the people you would do well to not annoy too much, as they're also the ones who have final say in matters. If another person in the thread can't help you and you actually have a problem, see these people before calling a Gaian Mod.

Permanent Staff
  • Ecks X : Lead Graphics Designer for HoH, and this year virtually everything else. Gets paid the most, has at least 3 houses, 2 hummers and likes to growl at people. Also responsible for tournament concepts and helping to organize things behind the scenes. XPJS master, and thusly follows the teachings of LADDER. This is the main man you have to thank for HoH this year.

Temporary Staff
  • Ryugi Kazamaru : Lead Story Designer for this year's HoH. Newbie to staff, not a newbie to competing. Resident "Dragon-Man," his pants have become something of a collector's item in past years. His focus has been on organizing staff people and getting big ideas moving.

  • The Darth Vizzle: Judgemaster for Heaven or Hell 2010.

  • Designated Hero: Judge for this year's Heaven or Hell.

  • Dashboard: Profile and fight judge for 2010's Heaven or Hell.

Past Staff List

  • Joseph Brown : The man with the plan, and quite possibly a bottle of Jack to boot. There isn't much that JB can't plan out, or make awesome. Getting along well with just about everyone, he has proven to be a good Judge in the past, as well as reserve Judge.

  • themightyjello : Creator of the abridged and up-to-date Rule Codex for HoH. Also has doubled as our Public Relations consultant and manager. Has tarzan-esque hair, the ability to wax eloquent, and is a devoted follower of WALL.

  • Maximos : A stickler for the rules and calm voice of reason in an otherwise tumult of arguing and whining, he has been known to frolic amongst participants before showing up in the same mood to eliminate them. A good judge of character and fighting in general, he has decided to step down from any staff duties this year.

  • Shouyin : A formidable fighter turned Eliminator, Shouyin made a name for himself when he started out in Leviathan as a novice--- and quickly climbed up the ranks in skill and wordplay through the help of those around him. Armed with a sharp tounge and a good knowledge of hand to hand combat, there isn't much that can prove to be too much for the 'Stoan King'.

  • Reiko : A big mouth, big love for women and a grasp of fighting that only few can match, Reiko took up the mantle of Eliminator once, and quite thoroughly enjoyed the position. Unfortunately, his entire fight had to be censored...

  • Nihilistic_Impact : If one didn't know better, it could be said that Impact and Fenix were both brothers. In the greatest of respects, they can often times compliment each other--- while providing disastrous results for everyone else, when they bring the Gams out. Impact possesses the clarity of judgment and objectiveness that every Judge should strive to embody.

  • Kraun : Overlord of the populace and general organizer for a majority of HoH related stuff. Very well known for his joy in eliminating people (or quite possibly just rending people limb from limb) both during tournament run time and outside of it. Hence why he is the Chief Eliminator for HoH. He keeps both tournament goers and participants in line as well.

  • Chaplain Fenix : Past judge. All funds mysteriously still wind up going through him first, and as such, he is responsible for dolling out the Purse, general rigging, and still has to give us all a raise.

  • Skysong Moonsword : Past Captain of the Judges. Responsible for upholding all rules and rulings during tournament run time, as well as keeping the rest of the Judges in line.

  • Vahn Fah : Co-Creator of HoH, and all around consultant for a variety of things pertaining to the tournament. Known for participating as well, although his staff duties end well before the tournament actually begins. Is known to rage at the drop of a hat.

Welcome to Heaven or Hell, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Is there a Storyline?

Heaven or Hell is an IC tournament with lasting consequences for the characters. This is why we demand that a true character be submitted, not a one-shot for the sake of fighting with someone new. We are here to affirm that roleplaying, and by proxy the internet, is srs bidniss.

But this year, its even more focused on the world around the tournament. Between the tournament's fights, the HoH Square battles, and the off-time that's spent in the Crimson Hawk Hotel, characters are encouraged to meet, talk, and create and enforce rivalries and friendships that exist outside of the tournament's scope. Past the obvious battling, this another draw of HoH, something that makes it transcend status from another tournament, and be an actual event.

HoH is televised live, with round-the-clock coverage. Gaia's established storylines are also part of our world, and we invite you to make a name for yourself. Just do it well, because the world is watching.

The Future Depends on You.

So far...
"In the Beginning...There was Chaos."
"The Gods brought Chaos to Order."
"But the Order has been Broken..."

"Battles will Rage."
"Destruction will Reign."
"HEAVEN or HELL"

The Order of Illumination (NPC Lumina)
The Order of Illumination, referred to simply as "The Order" is an ancient society based on the enlightenment of humanity, indeed all life, through the attainment and advancement of magical and elemental abilities. Their dream is to create a utopia of sorts where all peoples can grow to their full potential no matter their background, and advance through the universe to reach all final frontiers with the use of magic and technology working in harmony for the betterment of all. They are accepting of all who wish to join their cause, no matter their race or background as long as their intentions are honorable. They wish to use the Divine Grimoire to bring a new level of peace and prosperity to all life.

Society of the Shade (NPC Atma)
This group is the anti-thesis to "The Order" and is generally shortened to "The Shades." They believe that relying simply on magical or elemental abilities to make yourself stronger is completely pointless if you don't have the physical strength to back yourself up on top of it. They are against the idea of magical evolution or utopias, and would rather do things through their own blood, sweat, and tears than rely on fancy tricks or gadgets. This does NOT mean, however that they are against the use of magical abilities, just that they believe these are not the route to a better life, and they are willing to fight for it. They wish to gain the Divine Grimoire simply to prevent The Order from messing mucking with their lives, aiming to destroy it by any means necessary, even if they have to kill to do it.

The Divine Grimoire
This is the Ancient Artifact that everyone is after. In the beginning of time, legends tell that the whole universe was in chaos. Elemental gods and goddesses fought with one another, each one vying for supremacy over the newly created universe. However, eventually, they came to an agreement, deciding to balance each of their powers within the elemental planes of existence. They each brought their powers together and created the Divine Grimoire, an artifact that held within it the power to control the leylines of the universe itself. Using the newly created Grimoire they balanced their powers bringing Chaos to order.

This year, there are two new characters coming on to the Heaven or Hell scene, Atma, and Lumina. Each one of these characters represent a side on which the tournament is based, and may be seen posting in the thread. If you see one of these characters, do not simply dismiss them. Interact with them, ask them questions about the organizations that they represent, and do not take them lightly. Treat your encounters with them as important, for they will each be playing a major role in this year's happenings...

The main recurring characters of HoH are:

  • Elia Noah:

  • Nikki Summers:

  • Judges:

  • Dr. Sindri:

New characters are:

  • Lumina of The Order:

  • Atma of The Shades:

It is a tournament utilizing the STRIKER System from King of Fighters, for which a minimum of three people are needed. However, a fourth alternate is now required, in case one of the fighters is too injured to battle or their player is indisposed and unable to participate for the time.

It should also be noted that just as in the past couple of years, there is no entry fee.

For up-to-date information, subscribe to this thread and post regularly. Feel free to chat with other people, or come join us at the Leviathan Guild for more roleplay after the tourney.

There is also a Ventrilo server available for those who wish for a more personal session with Leviathan members and HoH veterans. It's basically like Skype, except without the faggotry-- and like MSN live conversations, but with no nudity on web cams!

Hostname: vent13.light-speed.com

Port: 8254

Password: The password will be available to those who request it. Send a PM to Designated Hero in order to gain entry to the vent server.

All Crew members of Leviathan have Admin power on the Vent server, so any asshattery or foul users can and will be banned from the server. This is paid by us, for YOU, so remember-- you have been warned.

What are you looking for?

The purpose of this thread is as a discussion area for HoH 2010.

We, the staff, acknowledge and encourage all sensible suggestions (and even some nonsensical ones). This tournament has always been for the people's enjoyment, and while staff has the responsibility to organize the final details, we've always considered the word and wish of the players and audience.

Newcomers too are allowed to speak up, though it is suggested that you read around and gain some knowledge, to prevent redundancy which leads to embarrassment.

While we are not actively seeking any suggestions, if anyone has any question about the following departments, they should feel free to spark a discussion:

  • Rule Changes
  • Stages
  • Tournament Format (Note that the tournament is Single Elimination this year)
  • New Features / Storyline
  • Prizes
  • Anything else you believe is relevant

We ask that you please refrain from PMing any of the Staff. Keep all queries, suggestions and other matters strictly to this discussion thread.

Can I be a Judge?

This year, we are in fact looking for people to fill the role of Judge and possibly "Guest Fighters" that follow a different set of rules than Eliminators in previous years. The former Judges for the past 3 years aren't currently available so there are obvious job openings.

Payment rendered for services will be discussed at a later date, and you are expected to serve as a role model and example for your fellow role-players.

A need for great attention to detail, and a fine understanding of the HoH Codex itself is also required.

You must have moderate to exemplary people skills, for you most likely will be dealing with arguments or other forms of disputes.

You must also have a firm grasp on role-play fighting mechanics.

An objective outlook is what is needed from a Judge, as well, above all else.

Judges do not favor individuals, nor do they show mercy or leniency for those who would break the Codex.

In HoH, you are literally, Judge, Jury and Executioner.

In order to apply for position of Judge or Guest Fighter, you must state your intentions in this thread, and your name will be added to a list that will be kept within this post.

This year's HoH Staff, will be deciding who gets accepted to either position based on need and availability.

What's so special about this Edition?

Well, a lot actually.

Not only does this mark the 5th Anniversary of Heaven or Hell, but it also marks the first time the tournament has been a major part of something truly bigger than the tournament itself, and we intend to make as big a deal of it as possible. Through all forms of media and all across Gaia.

As such, we want to see you, the fans, promote HoH in the best way you can think of. Go nuts.

Make HoH themed music videos, signs, photos, drawings, graffiti art, even cosplay if you feel the need. Even take a spin at announcing matches and results during Tournament run time--- anything you can think of!

Stay tuned to catch special HoH videos and come on Vent during tournament runtime to get to know your opponents and spectators more personally.

More information will be made available in the future.

Is it really rigged?

There was indeed some controversy about the rules during HoH 2008. It was a matter of miscommunication between tournament staff and the Gaian mods, dealing with three members of our staff fighting in the tournament as regular participants. It should be known that both sides have settled their problems with the other, and mods are invited to spectate and even join. Though the matter is settled, the following will serve as a short history lesson.

Vahn, Chaplin Fenix, and X were/are part of the staff, doing things from arrangement to stage selection and art. To do this, they had modship within the HoH guild. When the three quietly stepped down from tournament heading responsibilities, they retained their modship so they could assist in the policing of the unruly.

Gaian mods were told by third parties that the tournament was fixed since Leviathanites were the organizers and traditionally the judges and top winners. Fueled by the inside joke that HoH was rigged-- something that had been a joke since the first tournament, players were all warned that any instance of scamming was going to be taken seriously. Time passed from the warning to the tournament's opening, and since none of us were aware of any apparent wrongdoing, the show went on.

The mods revisited and saw that the players kept modship, despite stating clearly that they were not judges, and instantly closed the guild. The outcry from the participants and spectators was loud, and polling showed that the three players at heart of the controversy had a 30-1 vote in their favor*. Despite the instant demodding of the three players, the Gaian mods stated that since money was at stake, more discussion would be needed to accept the validity of the tournament. Solutions were suggested by all and the accepted one was that the three players, if their team won, would have no cash payout. As a further show of support, the year's entry fee was refunded to every player, only to largely be re-sent as donations towards the pot.

Let it be clearly stated that our Judges are selected for their ability to be impartial (and sometimes rather mean) in their rulings. No person involved with the tournament, in any way, shape, or form, will condone cheating as it challenges the integrity of the foundation upon which the Leviathan Stadium itself was built upon. All instances and reports of cheating the system in any form will be taken seriously, and is likely to result in a banning from anything affiliated with the Leviathan Family.

That's what we tell the media, anyway. None of the above changes the fact that HoH is rigged.

*The voting showed 30-3, but of those other two "nays," one was a purposeful joke and the other was the result of a mistake of the mouse.

How big is the purse?

With a small entry fee (for use only as the purse), the tournament is almost completely run on donations and art auctions-- the size of the pot determines the cut of the winners, after payment is rendered to Judges (services) and Ecks X (for appropriated graphics).

Any money given towards HoH will be treated as a donation. While it will be appreciated, a donation will not gain you any leverage in the tournament.

HoH 2006 was at 500 000 Gold.

HoH 2007 was at 1 880 500 Gold.

HoH 2008 was at 3 000 000 Gold.

So far, the purse for HoH 2010 is a total of ????????? Gold.

I am sure you can see where I'm going with this.

Special Thanks, in the words of Vahn

  • Patrick
While not terribly active on Gaia to this day, he was the man who took the time to initially help me with the first planning stages of Heaven or Hell, before it even became known as HoH. He invented the FIGHTER concept, still used to this day, and helped me to create the bare bones of the 1st HoH Codex. A good friend, despite whatever mishaps we might have had, I hope he's doing well.

  • Baldwin
At the time when HoH was first set to premiere, I had been kidnapped into a family trip for Christmas and such. I had little to no access to a computer, and if it weren't for this man, there never would have been an HoH. He set everything in motion, keeping the machine running while I was gone and then some. His work is largely in the background and tends to go unnoticed, but he is owed a lot of thanks. He also is the creator of the majority of HoH sanctioned sprite work you see, and helps to maintain the level of fun that HoH has standardized in the past few years.

A close friend, and someone who isn't thanked nearly as much as he should be by myself, I couldn't have done any of this without him.

  • Josh
If I created the bare bones of the original rule Codex, then Josh laid out the proverbial flesh and blood of it all on his own (with help of course). Not one to put up with much in the way of asshattery, he has painstakingly taken the time to fine tune the rulings we have today, as well as aid in creating the HoH we have today. He has always been there to help me on the creative side of things when I was stuck, and was one of the very first judges along with two others. Not too mention, he is basically the business face of HoH, helping to fend off Mods and other problems before they can even start.

  • Chris

  • Wulfman
The driving force behind the HYPE-A-MACHINE. He creates the slick banners, and graphics that make people of lesser talent jump off a cliff in agony. Without him, HoH wouldn't be as slick as it is. He is the definite go-to man for getting stuff done in terms of marketing, and he's never steered me wrong before.

I know that sometimes I take him for granted, but then again, he has a 5 digit salary for a reason.

  • Crawley
    This man right here.

This b*****d got me into KoF to begin with, and if that had not happened, I probably wouldn't have even been tempted to try and make a tournament in the scale that HoH is. He has always been my off and on again adviser on various roleplay fighting topics, and we often trade ideas on varying mechanics and fighting systems. A friendship literally forged on e-drama, I don't think I could ask for a better stereotypical black friend.

  • Jay
Every year, he has given the single largest donation to HoH. Without his financial support, we wouldn't be able to offer the amount of money that we do, let alone have the funding to properly run HoH on the scale we have standardized over the years. His devotion to the Leviathan Guild and Original thread are second to none, and enjoys HoH just as much as the next man. So to the winners of 2010, remember to thank the man who stuffed your pockets!

  • Rest of Staff
Tireless work, in both judging and keeping order in what could have easily descended into chaos. The various men and women who have taken up working behind the scenes of HoH have devoted both time and effort to make what we have today, and every year; a goddamned fun time.

  • Participants
If there weren't the amount of teams that that there are, then we wouldn't have much of a fight right? It's because people are interested in fighting that they come.

For the money, the notoriety, the fun, the atmosphere--- whatever their reason, the people come. We thank each and every one of you has participated throughout the years. We will continue to strive on improving and creating the HoH you all know and love.

  • The Fans
What is there really to say?

Without you guys, there wouldn't be much of a tournament to run or hold. HoH is first and foremost billed for the entertainment factor, and as long as there are people that enjoy watching and talking about HoH, we will know we have been doing a good job.

The fan support really went through the roof last year, when everyone banned together to fight the shut down of the guild.

So this year, we are specifically aiming to reward the fans.

    FOR YOU.

    BY YOU.

    AT YOU.
