The haughty warlord of fire threw back her iron-hot dresses and laughed, leering down at the prisoners with their faces smashed into the dirt below her feet. Her men stood as still as slumbering volcanoes, keeping the prisoners on their knees bowed painfully low, and with rumps in the air.
"You thought you could come here and steal my rubies?" she snarled into the ear of the closest quivering man. "Thought you'd take advantage of my generosity, was it? Well."
She knelt and the man felt the fire off her skin, like an intoxicating and dangerous flame ready to warm him or eat him, whichever. He stiffened and yelped when he felt her hot hands grip him somewhere low and indecent, somewhere that made his whole body buck with surprise and violent protest. When he strained away from her, she tightened her grip painfully, and he froze. "I'll be mighty generous with the lot of you," the lady laughed, her eyes burning bright. "Teach you a proper lesson you won't forget."

In her crippling solitude, she paints friends for herself, dreaming that perhaps one day her fervent wishing will bring them to life--perhaps their gills would flap, their fins would tremble, their scales would shine like lapis lazuli, and they will dart in the water with her to console her withering heart.
