A Friend in Need :: a place to borrow and lend items

ATers are constantly in need of items they don't have and would rather not buy.
This thread is a place for people to BORROW such items on a short-term basis.

Many people in the AT are friendly and trustworthy, but be sure you're familiar with the person before you lend an item to prevent theft.
(Even if you don't really know the person, an AT reg you recognize is probably trustworthy,
but it is of course up to you who you lend to.)


In a nutshell, how this works:

Borrowers

arrow Post the item you want
arrow Repost if no one responds within a couple days.
arrow Give up if still no one responds.
arrow Send the item back when you're done, or when the owner asks for it back.

Lenders

arrow Offer your item if you see someone who needs it. (Send trade or gift.)
arrow Ask for collateral if you don't 100% trust the person.

(Collateral is typically an item of similar value.)

More info:
--It is up to both borrower and loaner to remember who's borrowing/lending what.
--It's also up to the loaner how long you can use the item.
--Strike out your request when someone has loaned you the item, or otherwise make it clear you no longer need it.
--Trading is better than gifting! Trades protect against typing the wrong username, and also keep a log of who you gave it to/received it from & when.
--If you see the thread has a recent post, check it out. Maybe you have the item that's needed.
--Subscribe so you can find this thread whenever you need to borrow.

I won't need to borrow anything (unless I need something for the arena, which isn't likely to happen), but I'm more than happy to lend items. blaugh

I would STRONGLY recommend anyone who lends an item out to ask for an item of equal or greater value as collateral. This way, if the person disappears or refuses to respond, you can sell their item to get yours back.

I'd also STRONGLY recommend establishing a time frame. If they need the item longer, then when the original date comes around, you can always change it, but that way you have a clear idea of how long is too long for them to have your item.

I've never borrowed another's item, but I had a friend who would borrow items of mine, and they'd always offer some collateral. They wanted to make it clear that they had no intention of taking advantage of me, and it made me feel very safe about the whole situation, so I'd recommend this even among friends.

We could always attach a discussion about borrowing items, and that would make it AT appropriate. It seems safe as is, imo.

Hopefully it won't come to that.
Discussion could make all the requests go unseen,
and they're the point of this thread.
If it does get moved, I suppose I could just make sure
there's a link in the AT Archive and in my sig,
and we'll have to rely on people having subscribed to it.
