Soooo, having just caught up with the series, I just found out Amon is, one, a crazy mofo, two, a crazy powerful mofo who actually can mess with people's bending, and three, a crazy diabolical mofo who would rather keep Korra "whole" so she can be his last victim.
So this is gonna be an Amon discussion thread, for those of you who are interested. Please post your theories, thoughts, and feelings about Amon, though I can't promise you'll be protected from angry Avatards who think they're right and everyone else is wrong. :3
Anywho, onto the discussion...
Was I the only one who nearly wet herself in fright when Amon announced he can take away people's bending? The prospect was sickening and disheartening, because it shows that Aang's technique (if Amon can truly energybend) is being grossly abused, and because it just makes Amon that much more threatening and powerful. I didn't quite buy his example of Lightning Bolt Zolt or whatever that guy's name was, because his method of energybending looked nothing like Aang's. However, some have pointed out that Aang's display of energybending was the first time he'd done it, and also the last time he was shown to have done it, so nobody really knows what advanced energybending looks like, given time and experience to master it. Still, I find it difficult to grasp and believe, just because it kinda makes you wonder... Where the hell would Amon get that ability? He wasn't a bender, didn't have a bending family, so it's not like he could have learned there. I've heard maybe he learned it from vengeful spirits, like Koh or the owl dude, but that just seems really unlikely to me, because those specific spirits had nothing to do with the entire rest of the series once their part was done. Still, Amon might have been able to travel to the Spirit World (Aang was not the only one able to do this, as Iroh was known to have done it himself), but then again, he doesn't strike me as a very spiritual man who would have the capacity, power, and soulful balance to enter.
And his identity? I've heard a lot of theories about how it's Tenzin or Bumi (Aang's son), but neither seem plausible. Tenzin obviously is not, because he can't be in two places at once, as he is seen with Korra while Amon hears about her on the radio. As for Bumi... Well, not much is known about him at this point, I believe, but I doubt he would have a vendetta against benders, coming from such a prominent family of benders. Sure, you could say he's just sour because he was the only non-bender, but do you honestly believe Aang and Katara would have belittled him for it? He could have identified with Sokka and Suki, both non-benders but just as important members of Team Avatar as Katara, Aang, Toph, and Zuko. I think they would have raised him to accept his non-bender self. Still, that doesn't mean it's impossible. I just don't think so.
And as for the Sato guy? Definitely not Amon. Sato is shorter and broader than Amon, from what I remember anyway, and... no, just no. (Though I don't completely trust Asami just yet, because she appeared a little too quickly and was just as quickly buying Mako's affections... though I digress.)
Thoughts?
