I stopped watching after book 1

Actually, I stopped watching...well the last thing I remember was that Aang had to defeat the fire lord before the summer solstice and Sukko was getting a sword or something...yeah.

I get the feeling that maybe I should have watched more, I didn't even know it was finished. >.>

So do I need to see all of the original Avatar to watch this or can this be a stand alone/pre-face thing?

It can stand alone. But I would recommend going back and watching the first series again first if you have the time. You don't have to, but it would help you get the small references in this series.(Sokka getting a sword was actually in book 3 btw)

But it's a great baseline for whats going on.
