I think that they need to start teaching them how to fight hand to hand combat moreso than just bending right now.
The equalists work to fight up close to make bending difficult, but if everyone knows hand to hand combat much more than they used to I think they'll stand more of a chance.

Zuko was very good at hand to hand combat...well more hand to sword but his style worked well.
I hope in some way, he teaches them to defend themselves against it much more effectively
