The fact that Korra hasn't been sexualized is probably among one of the top reasons she works so well as a feminist role model.

It's SO often that female action heroes, or women of color in mainstream media get hyper-sexualized in ways that are deeply dis-empowering.
Korra spits right in the face of that. She's athletic, and built like it. It's realistic and awesome.

Yeah, that's why I don't like a lot of the female characters in movies. They're put in tight, often skimpy outfits, they're always put in angles and positions that show off the most titillating parts of their body, but the director gives her a gun or a sword and says "HERP DERP LOOK SHE USES A WEAPON THAT MAKES HER STRONG FEMINISMMMMMM!!!!!!111!!!!!!!". Even more annoying when the character is supposed to be a tomboy, but she wears a ton of makeup and super tight clothing. cat_rolleyes I don't think women should always be all covered up and s**t, but the issue is that they're being reduced to sex objects for the male audience. Sailor Moon, even though they wore short skirts, worked because they weren't really sexualized. No constant panty shots or chest close-ups or questionable poses. If a person finds the characters sexy, that's their thing, but it was never shoved in their faces by the show creators. Same goes for a lot of magical girl series.

Right?

There's a huge difference between having an empowered woman who is comfortable with her sexuality, and having a woman who is hyper-sexualized for male entertainment.

Yeah, even the "comfortable with her sexuality" thing has been abused to an extent, directors put a girl in a slutty outfit for the male audience but try to pass it off as "feminist" because she "makes her own choice to dress like that". cat_rolleyes Sorry, it only works if it's not being flaunted. If you have a ton of a**/thigh/boob shots, you're doing it wrong.

I like Korra. She's a strong, female character, but she's not uber-butch. That's one issue with female characters, people who want to make them "strong" remove any aspect of femininity. But by doing that, they imply that feminine traits are weak. But Korra works, she's not identified by her gender or a "tomboy" status. She's tough, but she does act like the typical teenage girl in certain aspects.

Agreed.

Bryke has a long history of writing excellent female characters though. We shouldn't be surprised.
