I used the Same pic and revised it a bit 3nodding

Nicer blending on the colours! The shading is again a bit off though, especially on Korra. She looks a bit like she's been out tanning while wearing sunglasses. In general, shading is darker around the eyes becaus compared to the rest of the face it's sunken in so the brow will cast shadow (you can feel your own face to get a sense of this). Bolin's not too bad, however, you've just got to work that shading harder, especially under the chin since the light appears to be from above. Also you might want to work on adding highlights as well as shade to your picture, to make it pop. Think about where the light's coming from and pile on the dark and light colours accordingly.

And yeah, working on anatomy will make that task a lot easier for you. To be honest, you should prioritize learning how the face works and its structure over colouring, because your colours may look great but if the form under it is bad then that's much harder to fix.

Ah I see! Well if I may offer more advice, personally when working with traditional stuff I tend to find it easier to draw something again rather than try to fix it. It's frustrating, I know, but sometimes it's better to just start afresh, armed with the knowledge of what went wrong the first time. It also cheers you up a bit to see even minor improvements between the same drawing, and it's best to savor that feeling because learning to draw is just a series of minor improvements. x - x)

Unless you're the God of Drawing, I highly suggest you watch how you critique.

Now, it's fine to think it's not the greatest drawing, HOWEVER, it's very rude to just say it sucks. If you're going to say something like that, you should try to say it not only in a more polite manner, but tell her what specifically about it you think should have been done differently, to help her improve. All artists, even the greats, always strive to improve.

So instead of being a d**k about it, give a helpful critique next time, like what I'm about to do. emotion_awesome

Mimi, I think it's adorable, however, I would be careful on the shading on Korra's face (as others have said). Definitely needs a touch-up around the eyes. However, Bolin's shading is very well done. ^^

And another tip, just to help give more life to your drawing: Perhaps try to add some highlights to the hair next time? Different shades to the hair can really make it pop~

Oh god people have really low standards to be defending the picture so much. The anatomy is off by so much, and the shading doesn't make any sense. x__x

I think the only reason people are defending so much is not so much because they think it's amazing, but because of how rude that one person's comment was. ._. If you're going to critique something, you're supposed to say what's wrong with it to try to help them.

Not everyone is going to be artist, that is just the way life is.
And for people to be rude and flat out say someone's drawing,
sucks is plain rude. Everyone has their own tastes on what,
is a good piece of art and what is not. She clearly tried hard,
and it may not be the best drawing she tried and with some,
help will get better. That is what is suppose to happen, with,
help and practice anyone can get better.

Two people in this thread are not very good artists. The difference is one is willing to fix their problem and get better and the other is not.

I would say both are good beginning drawings, but since one of them insists he has a lot more practice and that his paint one "isn't even his best" I'm going to assume he's been drawing for some time and say that his piece is complete and utter garbage.
Just because you understand proportion from copying off another image doesn't mean you understand anatomy. The entire body is stiff, his hands are like birds feet, his scarf is about twice the length and half the width it should be, and there's absolutely no contours to the body. The foot is a sad excuse for a foot, and I can only identify it as such because it's attached to his legs.

As for the op, it's a very good start. When I started to draw I was afraid of using colour, it's very nice that you were willing to. You should work on blending the pencils when colouring because Korra ended up with a mask. Start with the lighter colour, then add darker, then go over with a white coloured pencils to blend them together.
