Welcome to Gaia! ::

I've seen a lot of complaints recently about users not being able to take criticism about their arena entires. On the flipside, however, I've seen some critiquers that are just as bad. For example, someone commented on my current arena avatar with their two cents and promptly left. I went to comment them about their opinion, only to find they set their comment section and PM's to friends only. In their about me, they then shot down people who can't "take criticism". I understand not wanting to be bombarded with n00bs, but I think it's just as rude to have the ability to post something that could potentially hurt someone's feelings and not listen to their side of the story.

I'm one of those people that is OCD about my avatars, and I literally change them at least 10 times before I enter to make sure everything is as perfect as I can make it. If someone thinks I could have done something better, chances are I've already gone over the option they've suggested and decided against it for one reason or another. I enjoy hearing what other people have to say, but I also like having a discussion just as much. These people who critique and hide are a nuisance to me, personally.

What about you, AT? Do you find you have the same problem? Which is worse, the person who can't take criticism or the critic unwilling to hear you defend your choices?

I find people that stalk me from the arenas tend to be a little rude; I had one once who comments on my Profile and then turned her comments to friends only so I couldn't call her out on her crap.

That said, I think the ability to turn comments off on the arenas is wrong and I would LOVE for Gaia to introduce a reply to comment function.

I hate when you're as nice as nice can get when giving criticism and then the artist blows up and throws every cuss word at you especially when it says in the description "open to criticism" or "leave feedback on how to make it better"

Yeah, what they usually mean is "I'm open to criticism, if you can give it, because my avatar is PERFECT already" and "Leave feedback on how to make it better so I can shoot it down because my entry is already the best it can be because everything I touch is gold." :

That's so true. It reminds me of someone who entered the same character three weeks in a row with no changes and eventually disabled comments because they couldn't answer the questions that people were asking. :/

I wish everything I touched turn into gold. Then I could have enough money for my entries.

As a participant in the arenas, I can see why people do that. I mean I've gotten comments on my entries that are not kind or even remotely helpful.

One said "WTF? That looks nothing like the image" when I said in the avi description that I based it on the colors of the image.

Another said "Did you really think you could win with this?" To which I responded, "If I didn't think so I wouldn't have attempted to enter it."

In a sense I can understand why people disable comments. Some to avoid that from happening. For me? I let them say it and I delete nothing, because if I did, it'd show that I was irked by their groundless comments. In my eyes, chances are your critiques probably can't make avis nearly as good as those whom they comment on. So in their seat, they can only try and lower you down to their level by having your pride smashed by their words. I don't like it, but that's life.

Anyways, I agree that you should be able to voice your opinion about avis in the arenas as long as they are sound, unbiased, and are not rude. Also the people who enter should take the words of commenters who are giving positive feedback or tips to improve the avis with humility. They don't need to follow it but sometimes people can see things that you can't.

I love critiques on cosplays because people could give me advice on better items.

That said, I wish more people would leave comments to explain my cosplay's issues because I went down .13 points overnight emotion_0A0

It's the weekend, not you. Last minute downvoting. For example, my Cinderella last week went from a 4.7 to a 4.4-something and I still won first.

Unfortunately, Belle's not doing nearly as well.

Yeesh, this must be some intense downvoting
I went from rank 6 yesterday to rank 14 today.
A 4.12 to a (now) 3.98!
Maybe it's just me, but when I see that someone has disabled comments, I am less likely to rate it highly. Now, this does not mean I automatically do it as I try to judge based on the avatar or against reference (of cosplay) but I view them more negatively.

Any avatar that has obviously deleted comments I feel even less likely to rate them highly. Yes, people can be absolutely nasty when it comes to comments. I just try to be the better person and ignore them. I once commented to someone a suggestion that they try a different item instead of one they were using, but noted that the avatar looked nice. The person became defensive, declared the avatar perfect, and deleted my comment.

I never hide or delete because even if people are cruel, there will be some who provide helpful criticism. And if I block comments, I deny myself the opportunity to get better.
I know it's pretty unlikely, but it would be interesting if you couldn't vote unless you did leave a comment. I'm sure there would be plenty of /10chars going on, but still it might encourage others to voice their opinions. (You could also see everyone that votes in case you want to chat with them. ^-^) I'm pro-critiquing as long as it's within reason. I don't think people should cover up down-rating and bashing on avatars as "constructive criticism" when nothing constructive is actually being said.
