It can REALLY hurt, especially if the cosplay won or got a lot of exposure recently.

However, if you do a done-before cosplay with a brand-new-just-released-perfect-for-the-cosplay item, you might do REALLY well (just look at some recent past winners).

Well, I had a couple ideas, but both have been done before. I can't see one, since it wasn't in the top ten. The other was a top ten avatar over a year ago, and my take on it is very different, using a different costume entirely.

Unless it was a Naruto or Final Fantasy cosplay, sounds safe to attempt =3

I think it has a lot to do with fan base too..yah, naruto is crap nowadays..but if you still look, they get a decent enough rating in the arena that if it hadnt been done a gazillon times, it would have a good chance at winning..so Id say do a cosplay of something that has a great fanbase/is wellknown.
