I guess the attic is not as scary as the dungeon. At least the attic is above ground and can potentially let in more light. Attics are also referred to as garrets, lofts, or sky parlors. Although nowadays, we use the word "loft" to refer to a different type of structure. Lofts are nice, although privacy may be an issue in them.
