They attain this helpful does of cynicism over time. In fact, over the years, a special rehabilitation center was erected beside the palace, to give place for all the heavily cynicized retired assistances to get used to the world again.

In the cheesecake age of interstellar travel- where propulsion devices are just about as varied as said cheesecakes, certain hobbies previously thought to be lunacy have become fitting for this new age's lunatics- including black-hole surfing, a ghastly tourism activity that involves deliberately falling towards a blackhole and firing away on the engine just before it's too late. Now and then an engine fails, but well, they make sure certain legal documents were signed before hand (and that's why they encourage whole family trips anyway).

Of course, the list of such lunatics does not exclude some wannabe politicians with brown furs.

Trowa: *gonk*...*gonk*..........*gonks again*.....*gonk with a special flare*....*a little more eye twitch in this one*...

It might be easier to explain their apparent state of awe to say that they are standing in front of a row of large windows. Outside the window is light- glaring pinkish light as gasses from a victim star is sucked around and into a black hole. They (the gasses) spin faster and faster as they are approaching the center- until they glow with a brilliant brightness. So bright is it that without the windows' tinting, Trowa might have lost his gonking eyes.

And after quite a lot of gonkings (if there be such words), eyebrow raising and "wow-ings", it's a surprise everyone manages to keep their mouth, eyes and eyebrows intact.
