Using established universes sound pretty cool though.

I actually had a Mary-Sue period. xD And then when I realised the truth about Mary Sues, I still had a Mary Sue fanfic reading period.

<_< Mostly in the LOTR fandom though. xD
XD The thing about Mary-Sues...if you know you have one and you're just having fun with them, that's cool. ^^ They're not inherantly bad or wrong or anything, and I think especially for writers, they are a really useful and maybe important learning curve - and a good place to start out. smile

It's when people think they have a really awesome original character and expect that everyone else will love them, just because the do, and won't take critism of them...that's the problem. XD;;

My Two Cents. ^^

I wrote a paper for my degree on Mary Sues. That was fun. :3
X3! Yee! Though I'm sure that original or not, if it was fun, that's what counted :3.

SSJ: XD, I think we've all mary-sue'd at some point if we didn't realize, or even if we did. Or well, most probably have. I know I was a total noob back when I first started online (and I do mean a TOTAL. NOOB.) So obviously that came with mary-sueness when I rped. XD.

Cartagia: You wrote a PAPER on it? That's so AWESOME! For which course?

Goosie/Goosy/GM? : How do people shorten your name? XD I think it's funny to see how people in the age-ranges of 13/14 almost all seem to start out with Mary Sue's. It's like this natural tendency. Quite fascinating, really. smile
English lit. :3 I was exploring the idea of a Mary Sue and how you can distinguish them, given that the popular ideology in Lit is that the author doesn't really exist (in terms of studying the text, not literally).

Usually people go by Goosie or GM, though Reddy's boyfriend has oddly taken to calling me Goosy XD.You can call me Tarah if you like, as well.

You're kidding? Hah, what did your teacher think of it? I mean, the sole essence of Mary Sueing is self-insertion (albeit unconsciouly)... right? >__> What did you conclude about that anyway? And your teacher must have been so happy with all the non-academic sources on Mary Sues.

GM/Tarah: Hmm, I'll have to think on it for a bit. xD For now GM or Tarah will do, but I shall come up with something original very soon!

Tomorrow, since I'll be going to bed now. smile Thanks for hanging out here, it was fun & interesting. whee

No worries, it's nice to have people to talk to! :3 See you tomorrowww~
Haha. XD They where okay with it, the tutor I had was a really forward-thinking teacher, he encouraged us to use sources like the internet and popular culture to base our papers on. smile

My conclusion was that you can distinguish Mary Sues by the cliches that make them up, and not individually, it requires a combination of elements and points. But also that to really tell them you can't use the 'death of the author' theorys, because they don't exist with that.

Tarah, that's a cool-sounded name. XD

SSJ Girl, what can we call you? :3 And sleep well!

Thanks! I like my name. :3.
