aw, what the heck....
i was browsing a website and this got my attention.
http://www.devtopics.com/copywrong-how-hr-5889-orphan-works-bill-will-reduce-the-rights-of-individual-artists/
now, go to google or any search engine and type "orphan art bill H.R.5889" and read some of the article about it.
from what i know, this bill will strips artists their right to every single piece of their work (be it past or present) =w="
they demanded that art piece (as in generals, not limited to only visual art. they can be almost anything you posted on the internet. be it your family photo or letter in your blog to your youtube vid) will be required to be registered or they will be counted as orphan work and allowed to be use in anyway someone on the net want (including commercial use)
note, artist lost their right if the crime occur before they copy righted their art.
note, a fully done piece of artwork can be copyrighted, but the sketch for the art can still be stolen legally if the other party proved that they did search for the artist but could not find them.
note, many artists accessible to some but is unvail to many others. so they can just took their works and sell it without permission? 0.o
note, artists got a whole mountain of works. they will have to register every single 1 of them? how much will that cost? who will pay for them? and why do they even have to pay for something they created with blood and sweat to be protected? now even the little signature on the image wont mean a thing if the other party just claim that they cannot contact the artist?
note, those people claimed that the bill will protect the artist, what it does is open more opportunities for big corporations/opportunists to use the artists' work without paying their tribute.
note, they say you do not have to register your works, but if it get stolen, you have no right to complain.
and guess what? on May 9, the bill passed the house and on its way to the next stop before it get legalized!
if this does get passed, believe me, online artists wont ever publish their works online anymore ^^" oh wait, guess what, they do not have to publish their work online unregistered to be stolen, anyone can claim it was online. and not only US artist got affected, anyone online with their "art" float around online is subjected to it. i cant believe how many loopholes 1 can exploit from this =w="
personally, i doubt my art would be stolen since i am no professional. and even if it does, i would have no knowledge of it unless someone tell me about it. and though, it sound like this bill does not concerned me or you/the one who read this post; it does! even if you does not mind people appreciating your work and derive it online, how would you feel if someone sell your work and making a profit from it behind your back and you cannot do a single thing about it? i feel sorry for those out there who will loose their labor right and authorship over their works.
