Um...let's see.

Basically she's a middle class average Jane of her people. She lived in Xhaikia, a cavernous under-water country (the Xhaikians and the Zanarans share a common ancestor, but obviously developed in different ways). In Zanara, you are either very wealthy and privileged, or poor as dirt, there's no in-between, but in Xhaikia there is. So when Zanara set out to take a vaulable hostage, they mistook her content lifestyle as a sign of great wealth and importance, and kidnapped her because tehy thought that she would be more valuable than she was. (Which is kind of funny, because their Sentencing her is what basically sets off the whole rising action and eventually the Revolution)

But Romni as a person lived with her older sister, who is a potion brewer. Romni herself was a scavenger to help pay her board with her sister. She's still in school (more of an apprenticeship), a laid-back Xhaikian form of college or university, where she's learning to be a teacher.

That's basically all that I know for sure of her past. I haven't fleshed it out as much as the other characters'.

but... but but how did she go blind? o.o

Oh. Well, everyone in her race sees like she does. XD It wasn't an accident at all. To a Xhaikian, she's perfectly healthy. ^^ It's no so much that she's blind as it is that she just works differently. She sees better in the dark, and sudden, bright flashes of light can be painful to her, but given enough time, she can eventually adapt to brighter surroundings.

she sees through the markings under her eyes though, right? Not through her eyes?

She sees through the combination of the slits in her cheeks and her lure, so basically everything she sees is through the gem in her forehead. Even when she closes her real eyes, she can still see. XD

how interesting! So her eyes are kind of a ploy, like those butterfiles that look like they have eyes on their wings? Is her sight tinted the color of her gem?

I haven't decided yet. Probably not. I really like to describe things in colors, and having to hold back on that with Romni would drive me crazy. XD

true, colors are a very useful tool when describing, especically describing the uniquely colored people she's going to be dealing with...
