And after being plagued by many problems from Gaia, a decision was finally made to remake the thread. It brings me much honour to present to you...

FREE AVATAR ART FOR NEWBIES (FAAFN for short) is a thread dedicated to welcoming newbies to Gaia and helping them get into the flow of things. Newbies are welcome to hang out here regularly. We will answer all your questions and reward polite newbies with free avatar art and the random item or bit of gold.

Avatar art can be very expensive. People make fortunes selling their art to those willing to pay the price, and many Gaians are. As a reward for newbies who know how to handle themselves on Gaia and contribute to the betterment of the site, artists from all over have volunteered to give free art to newbies - art that would usually cost tens of thousands of gold or more that newbies simply do not have. Plus, it's cool.

I'll keep the rules simple. Please follow all the rules, even if you're an old member, or not even looking for art. It makes everyone a much happier person ^_^

1: If you want art, follow these guidelines. Simply come in, talk to the people here, become friends with the artists. Just jump in and start talking! We know you want art; that's why you're in the Art Freebies forum. We're also here to help settle you into Gaia, but "draw me plz" isn't much of an icebreaker, you know?

2: The artists choose who to draw. So, if you reeeeaaaally want to be drawn by (Artist X), but are instead drawn by (Artist Y), then don't fret. As long as you're still classed as a newbie to, or have befriended the artist you like, then there's always a chance. Some artists even allow PMs, if you wanted to request them personally!

3: Please do not harass an artist. Some bad reasons for PMing someone is to 'beg' for items, gold, or art, or pester about art in-progress. If an artist has agreed to draw for you, please keep in mind that our artists have lives outside of Gaia, so they can't often can't afford the time, materials, or effort that it takes to draw everyone on a regular basis.
*Note: Some artists say that you may PM them. This is not an invitation to beg them for anything. Please keep it polite.

4: Please use your own webspace to host your pictures. If you're looking for an easy, free, and user-friendly place to host your images, then visit Photobucket (registration required), Imageshack, or Tinypic. The former allows you to keep your own gallery, the latter two don't require registration.

5: Watch what you post. This means that posts or images that stretch the page, excessive quote-nesting (explained below in the FAQ), and excessive animated emotes are not acceptable. If you have a large picture to show, just post the link. Try to keep the quote-nests to 3 (4 at maximum), and remove the [img] tags if you quote a picture larger than 200x200. This is to help keep the pages clean and eays to load for all users!

6: Do not ask to be made a thread mod. The Mods have been picked, and if we feel we need more moderation we will contact the person we would like to add to our team. If you have a problem with moderation, contact a FAAFN2 mod; they are listed on this page.

7: Be kind and respectful in the thread. Try to keep the drama to a minimum. This is meant to be a light-hearted haven for newbies; let's keep it cool. On that note, also try not to be obnoxious in your posts; no excessive chatspeak, 1337-speak, or posting in all caps, please.

8. Don't beg! Begging for art or monetary donations is rude and very annoying.

Alright, I'd like to take advantage of this being the second post by telling all those newbies who didn't read/understand the first post:

The point of this thread is to talk. Not bump, not spam, not come in, say "Draw me" then leave immediately, but TALK. If an artist thinks you're worthy (ie, you've returned to this post over a few days, you try to use proper spelling, you've made friends with all the regulars) THEN we may decide to give you an artwork. In fact, there are so few newbies around, if you stay for a week and have DECENT UNDERSTANDABLE conversations, it's ALMOST a guarantee that you'll get artwork.

Well, it all depends on the personal preference of the artist. The general guideline is around 200 posts and under, and/or 1 month and under. But note that it's just a guideline, not a rule.

Bah! Of course not. Anyone is welcome to hang out in the FAAFN, as long as we all get along.

What's the difference between a newbie and a n00b?

A newbie is a new person to Gaia who reads the rules, gets along great with the regulars, and has respect for others. On the other hand, n00b is a derogatory name that is generally used for new people who are rude, obnoxious, and think that they deserve more than they warrant. There is more to both names than that, but you should get the general gist of it.

How do you put pictures in your signature?

First, go to your Account Settings (found under the My Gaia tab). At the top of the page, there will be a line of icons; go to the gear at the far right and hover over the down-facing arrow. Find and click "Signature", paste your image code into the white text box, then save!
Your image code is the URL (address) of your image placed between [img] tags.
***Remember that you need to have your images uploaded and hosted on an online server. Free and easy image hosting sites include Photobucket, Imageshack, and Tinypic. Photobucket requires registration, but you get your own personal gallery to use; Imageshack and Tinypic do not require registration, but you don't get your own gallery.

I tried that, but it's not showing. What did I do wrong?

Make sure that the URL is correct and there are no spaces. [img] should be places directly before the URL, and [/img] directly after. If you're still having trouble, please ask us and we can walk you through it step-by-step!

Is there a limit to what you can show in your signature?

Yes there is. All pictures in your signature must total 500 x 500 pixels or less, and total 100kb or less. Also, any images that break Gaia's codes of conduct are also prohibited from being shown.

I've followed all the rules and made lots of friends here, but I still don't have any art. Why not?

Well, there could be many reasons. The main one would be that not all of the artists are always available to draw, and sometimes you just have to be patient with people. All good things come to those who wait.

I'm new to the thread and I try to start a conversation with people. But they're talking to other people, and not replying to me. What am I doing wrong?

Well, if there's a conversation in full swing with a few people, then chances are that some people are a bit busy at the moment. A good way to get in on the action is talk to what everyone else is talking about. Also, an introductory post comes in very handy. Introduce yourself to the regulars in the thread, and pretty soon it'll almost be like you're a regular yourself.

You can ask any one of us! Just post your question in the thread, and depending on how many people are around at the time, you could get a few answers for it. Or you can always feel free to PM any questions to the helpers in the 4th post who are offering their help with questions.
