~What do you call yourself?~

Does the title matter more than the artwork? (Hint: no) The only people I've ever encountered who make a big deal about being called an "artist" (with no qualifiers) were ones who felt some sort of inadequacy.

I can't think of good all-encompassing advice, and I'd hate to think that there would be just one thing to remember. But for observational drawing it's always good (and underrated) advice to "draw what you see, not what you know". Many people would be better artists if they appreciated how important it is to be able to see things.

you don't need to have a profession of an artist to be called one. i can cook food, since culinary arts is my first finished course, so people can call me a cook. but they don't see me working in a restaurant. hope you get my point.

I'm a hobbyist.

In my opinion, you're a hobbyist, if you're not serious about art (as a career). You're a beginner at art, if you've just started. You're a student of art, if you don't consider yourself quite the level of a professional. And, you're an artist, if you're actually that as a career. (Maybe even a little later than that.) But, that's just how I see things. I'm sure plenty of other people have different terms.

Come to think of it, I don't recall ever telling anyone I was an artist. Not because I was consciously thinking "Oh, I'm not good enough to be called that" or anything... but because it's a label. One that implies proficiency in art and nothing else. It's bad enough when I tell someone I draw and they assume this is my one great interest and talent. Well, no, hypothetical generalization person, I'm also good in math. And writing... that's the real reason I started drawing to begin with. I'm also a pretty decent singer. But if I just label myself as an 'artist', all the nuance is lost and people categorize you by the label. And nobody's just a label.

artist is too general a term and causes people to stereotype you. when i introduce myself, i say "painter", "illustrator", and "video producer" because it's more accurate.
