That's just how things are now. People want shiny, pretty, animez. Some one out there will like your traditional work. I don't have a problem getting people to come to my avi shop even though I use pen, ink, and color pencil. I enjoy traditional mediums so that's what I'll use. If people don't like it, they don't it. But I refuse to dumb myself down to selling crappy CG instead of good color pencil.

I think one of the major things you may be overlooking when it comes to the price of art on Gaia: Popularity.

I know, it's a crass little thing that no one wants to talk about, but the truth is that those half-assed sketches will sell for insane amounts of money as long as the seller is someone with a name / reputation. I've seen in it action MANY times.

And, as others have already stated, digital media will almost always look better in digital format -- unless you have one killer photographer / scanner at your disposal, which the average artist on the internet does not.

Then again, there are plenty of people that value ~*~*~*shiny~*~*~*~ coloring and whatever style is popular at the moment over the fundamentals of anatomy or something truly original and appealing.

Damn good point; it's downright formulaic. From my limited experience doing Gaia gold commissions, artists become a brand, a commodity, and a collector's item. Introduce an artist with a decent skill level, have them gain a following, and then suddenly limit their supply: show how the amount of works the artist can make is finite, and that anyone who has work by that artist is in a special club. This is how auctions explode (especially when the artist auctions off something outside of their normal offerings).
Well... There isn't much you can do about CG making more money but please know that as an artist I appreciate talent, It can be seen in CG and traditional and those of us who jump the CG bandwagon and aren't very good don't get any appreciation from the artists amoung us. We know the difference so we got your back! :3

Yes, popularity is a HUGE, if not, main factor in selling. As they say, "any publicity is good publicity".

There are a number of artists here that EVERYONE knows about, everyone who hangs around the art forum anyway. A good chuck of time, they are quite talented, but some do not even deserve the popularity they receive. *sigh*

Excellent. Yes, it just saddens me a little inside to know that artists that aren't very good with basic sketching, and drawing, are using tools like tablets. I'm not downing their skill, but they should at least get the basics down, so that they can grow as an artist, instead of just using crap CG art to get fake money.

It does make me sad at how alot of people tend to value CG art more than Traditional. I remember when I first made my Art Shop some years ago (it's on hiatus now due to college and whatnot), someone actually asked me if I could use Photoshop or a digital coloring program for my artwork instead of colored pencils and whatnot. Note that I didn't say anywhere in my shop that I also did CG artwork. If that made sense). O_o Granted, I still had ALOT of customers regardless.
I admit I do like digitally coloring my art and I plan on buying myself a tablet, but I prefer using Traditional methods.
As a more traditional artist, I disagree.
I find it hard to use a tablet, as someone may find it hard to paint or draw.
Its not about skill, its about preferance.

However, digital art is consumed mainly but mainstream stuff, but you never really see it in the art galleries.
As the Tate (best gallery ever.) rarely shows digital art, but contemporary new and exciting art.

Digital art really does nothing for me, sure, the pictures pretty, but I need something behind it.

i started selling stuff using traditional media (color pencils) years ago and i think a lot of people still appreciate traditional media, i do CGs too and i have nothing against it as well, both takes skill to master mrgreen
People have preferred cg art ever since I joined art communities 8-9 years ago. Someone said that straight to my face. emo
YUS, AGREED! ><
I like both forms (if done WELL), but I'm definitley sick of seeing all the CG s**t. Its not nearly as impressive, and its just sad when someone colors something that they did incredibly shitty line art for. I guess on the internet CG art is probably a lot more popular because it looks a lot nicer on the computer. I would never buy CG artwork in real life, that would be stupid. It'd just be some crappy print out. But buying traditionarl artwork in real life would be nice, 'cause its like you can really see the art and all the technique in it.

but um.. <.<;
it should be
traditional art > CG- if you like traditional better. o.o;
the open end is like a mouth and it turns toward the one it likes more 'cause it wants to eat it more O:

I agree 3nodding

My Dad's a graphic designer [irony; he's also not very good with traditional art] so I have an appreciation for digital art, but you can't do much with it other than graphic design. Even an animator need to have a good basis in traditional art 3nodding

I do think there is a little too much bashing of digital art going on here though, because the beauty of it is that it can allow some one who really is creative but can draw or paint by hand to do just that on the computer. And I think that's a wonderful thing for those who love art but have never been too good at it.

But I understand where you're coming from when you say it shouldn't be valued more than traditional art, and in the real world it's not [yes there is a world outside of gaia xd although some believe it to be a myth]

But her point is that traditional art is rejected in favour of CG, in which case it is right.

Honestly I haven't had that problem. Actually, I have a lot of people that tell me they prefer my traditional work to all the shiny CG out there(sometimes when referring to a picture I did in digital, el-oh-el).
