Welcome to Gaia! ::

I'm having trouble with my lineart. Now, I understand that there's the Pen Tool, which you can slow down by using the amazing Stabilizer in the top right. I use that all the time. But I also know that you can make lineart by using the Curve tool after making a new Linework layer, which I also do sometimes.

My question to all of you who are experienced with anime style lineart and making it look good, is.... How do you usually make your lines thinner/thicker in certain places? Do you manually add more lines over the lines you already made? Or do you take a thick line and strip it down?

In this video, the artist is somehow doing what I mentioned second, and making already-thick lines thinner.

If you make your thick lines thinner...how are you doing it? I've tried Googling, and I still don't see what tools are being used for making them thinner. An eraser wouldn't help, as it erases an entire portion of the line.

All help is appreciated. ;____;

I just do line thickness with pen pressure and the tablet. What I usually do is a pencil size of 3, with minimum size of 1. If I want to make the lines thicker I do 5 px, minimum 2 px.
I personally do my lineart with just the pen tool and add thickness or remove bulk manually where necessary. I don't really like working with vector tools (my lineart always looks stiff and i feel like I don't have proper control).

I only really looked at a few seconds of the video, but I'm guessing you're asking how to change the thickness of lines in SAI with the vector tools? One way to do that is the "pressure" tool in the vector menu. You select a line and drag to the left or right to make it thicker or thinner. You can also use the "weight" tool to make entire sections of lines a different thickness by choosing a new thickness and clicking.
The "weight" tool creates a uniform thickness that's good for just generally changing line thickness and the "pressure" tool alters lines at the point along the line, so you can make one end of a line thicker than the other.

If this wasn't what you were asking or I didn't help, er... I can try again sweatdrop

Thank you for the tip. :3 I usually just drag to whichever size I feel will work at the moment, but I think it would do my drawings better if I started paying more attention to sizes.

Yes, that was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. n__n
Set the "Min" option (under pen size, which doesn't matter) to zero. That lets your pen control the weight/thickness of each line as you apply pressure. If you're worried about stiff or wobbly lines, keep your passive hand on control Z and do each line in one fell swoop. Works for me and isn't so complicated.

    this is hard to master realy all you gotta do is your own way, so yeah thickening up and taking of by double linning is a good way to start, I still after many years of digital drawing find it hard to ink/line but good thing is if you make it on seperate layers you can try many different ways.

    I personaly like a light sketched look and tend to steer clear of black as it just makes the process harder, try to line in a grey or blue first then if its working change it to black smile

I use the airbrush for lineart, though i changed the settings for it.

It works the smoothest for me, and it's very easy to do lose sketches with.
