How would you color gold? I don't see it very often because I'm not a huge fan of jewelry or any other type of gold, so what would a good color for it be? Yellow or orange seems to plain and I tried in between... I can't find a good one! ><
Looking at some reference is a good idea. Here are a couple from a quick search for "gold ring" on corbis.

As has been mentioned, the phenomenon that makes gold look shiny is reflection of light. It's the contrast and tinting of those reflections that will get you a really nice, shiny, golden look. I'd recommend starting with a dark base color. In the second reference pic, the darker areas at the top of the rings are a very saturated, dark orange/yellow, almost black. Underneath the dark bands, they're reflecting the light from the surface they're sitting on. The bright spots on the left and right look to be coming from two light sources above the rings.
So the idea is to consider the position of the lights and bright objects in your scene and imagine where their light would bounce off of the surface of your jewelry. You might try looking at a smooth shiny object (heck, gold if you've got it) and moving your fingers or other objects near it, noticing how it picks up the color and distorts the reflection based on its curvature. You don't need to be very exact in the shapes, colors and values of your reflections. As long as you've got some contrasting bright shapes that look like they're probably from the environment the gold is in, you're good to go.
