So I know about the deal where you plan out character measurements using the head.

But heads seem like iffy things, they're not just circles. Heads are longer than they are wide, and the chin is part of the head unit most times I see it used, so doesn't that make things a little wonky?

Drawing with proportions based on the head really comes down to whether or not you're working with very realistic or more stylized art. It's more iffy for stylized work, but it makes sense when broken down for a realistic piece. Let me give you a really good example I dug up:

The proportions are based on both the height and width of the face and it even shows the proportion differences in a shorter/taller character on the female version.

Also, as the caption on the picture states, race, sex, age, and individual physical differences prevent setting down any fixed rules as to anatomical proportions.
