i think lots of people mix up gothic art and dark art...
I mean, gothic turned into a clothing style and they just can relate it this way now...

gothic art = cathedrals in my opinion...

Yeah, Gothis art is easily confused with the current gothic style. Honestly, for those who know about the art style, they tend to be different.... Gothic art was usually used for cathedrals and other buildings, and although gargoyles look evil... they're not demons. I mean, the Gothic art style was.... "created" before art itself started shifting away from religion and God and all that good stuff.... Ugh, people tick me off when they don't understand what the hell they're labeling.

the way i see it...

gothic art - pre-renaissance, mostly architecture

dark art - the things you are describing.

but i'll add one more.. i think if you say "goth" art, it's to be expected that what you're drawing is something pertaining to the goth subculture. you wouldn't call gothic architecture "goth", so i think it's less likely to be mistaken.

ya know?

can we see it and then judge? Because maybe the people are right? ;D

Oh yeah, I get that all the time - but the fact is that you can either let it get to you or you can ignore it. Who cares what they label it? It doesn't change your picture at all - and that's what matters smile

It gets to me when people call dark or twisted art "goth," "gothic," etc. So no, you aren't the only person.

I define Gothic art as pre-Renaissance art, namely architecture in the form of chapels and cathedrals.

I also get a kick out of the subculture the word goth has become associated with. People claim it to be a way of life.. I've even had these people go so far as to call themselves devil worshipers.. The true Goths of the past were Godloving clerics and settlers? Makes me wonder. rolleyes

This has also happened to me, on a broader term of 'goth' comics. I've read goth comics and my stuff isn't nearly that extreme. I have a number of diverse elements, and go with a more 'hard' and 'manic' mood to most of my work, but because it's different, and dark, it's only natural people will label it with their idea of 'different' and 'dark'. Hence.
Doesn't upset me. People think what they want. I let my work speak for itself.

The gothic subculture got its name from gothic literature (Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, etc), not from the Ostrogoths and Visigoths.

Maybe it makes more sense now?

technically that's what emo is, it just takes it a bit further. emo - emote.
