For digital art, how large do you make your canvas?

like Shintenzu said; as large as your computer can handle. I try to always work at least on 11x8.5'' 300 DPI, or 11x8,5'' if it's a wide shot. More then just thinking ''print'', it's about being able to paint details at a 100% rather then 200%, 500% and start doing pixel art instead of painting. wink

Basically everything I work on gets used in video, though, so I just use HD settings.

Usually at 72 dpi, with 1000-3000 px.

generally I work on letter size at 350dpi, though doodles are normally postcard size.

i usually make the canvas huge and crop the image to the size i want. I feel more comfortable with bigger space then small space.

I generally work too small. My excuse used to be that my computer couldn't handle it, but nowadays I think I just get intimidated by so much canvas. D:

I was going through some old files and I found a canvas size 15,000x6000. I think I must have been trying to destroy my college's PC xD

I usually work with one side around the 5000 mark but I sometimes end up cropping a lot or enlarging.

I sketch at a smaller size and then blow it up to whatever size I need.

I keep the print size in mind, so if I want something to be 12x16, I set it to 12x16 inches at 300dpi. I don't really pay attention to pixel size unless I'm working small.

Around 15000x10000px-- sometimes less, sometimes more, but generally it's my favourite size range for prints.

This as well. however I do not actually do full digital art often.... I've started on another one recently taht is a proper render rather than a crap tacular doodle and it's happy but then I have 8gb ram... and a video card that is epic. So.... it can handle it no problem...

My old computer Beast had 2gb ram and would only have momentary lag towards the end of the image once there were layers and layers and layers (because I would do things like brocade on fabrics all by hand, and then trim designs all by hand... and decorations and jewelry... and yeah... This is probably why I hate digital art I bite off more than I can chew for my skill level, though am getting much better at it again...

Also said machine was overclocked as far as it could possibly go... current machine... not overclocked... granted old machine could still run almost the full adobe suite without freaking out too badly... new machine... Seriously it gets a troll face on it when I try to make it work hard... and then it asks if I'm mad bro cause it handles it like I was playing with note pad and calculator rather than adobe.

I don't think I will ever manage to kill this computer until things start getting far more advanced then they are now (like ALL 3d and projection sort crap...oh wait... this computer can handle anything 3d and 3dHD.... ) So it will take projections like 'obi wan kenobi your my only hope' to make me think about a different computer... God I hope they don't invent that stuff in the next two years... I want to gloat about the fact my computer is 6 years old and still performing better than most peoples new computers

In Photoshop, 2400 x 3000, 300dpi. In Sai, about half that because it doesn't let you work at print resolution without crapping out on you.

Weird, I use a 5000x5000, 300dpi canvas in SAI and use a lot of the canvas space with 20+ layers. I still haven't had it crash. It might lag a little here and there once I'm pushing the memory on it, but other than that, it's fine.

But I generally work large and then downsize quite a bit. It helps hide my lazy lineart and colouring a bit. rofl
Obviously I won't be so lazy if I'm planning on using something as a print or if I'm doing a much more serious piece, though!
