Edge control and contrast are the two biggest things here. Each time 2 planes meet each other, you will have some type of value contrast. Example, if you draw a cube under a strong light source, each side is going to be a different value. That is the fundamental aspect of line-less drawing you must keep in mind. To truly understand this, you should do still life studies in charcoal.
