For awhile now I've been experimenting with my style. I've been trying out a painterly style....with mixed results. I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on how to make this viable?

Well just the style in general. I guess perhaps shading and the like I suppose.

The key is to don't stop experimenting. But with a painterly style you can do more depth in shading. Pay attention to where the light is coming from in your art, and remember that shadows aren't just a darker version of the main color, they can be full of blues and grays and even a bit of color from the light and surroundings.
