ugh, please. Someone gimme a brick to throw at this guy.
Swear to god, this guy is like... slowly making the AA artists at this con loathe him.

After his super long debate with a couple of us on aim, with him proclaiming "crafts aren't art, and don't belong in artist alley", as in you know. Hand crafted pins, charms, painted anime shoes, etc. Anything that isn't a print, he comes into my thread, and pulls this.
This guy disgusts me.
He cares about artist alley SO MUCH, that
Quote:
We even decided to add non artist Tables for $100 for those people who do crafts and advertise and stuff.

NON-ARTIST tables for people who do crafts.... so...
$100 if you do something besides prints. ANYTHING. Where did this price come from, versus the $40 that the normal AA is?

Like... I'd understand if there was more basis to it. But. Over the ENTIRE weekend that the artists debated with him, the only reason it's happening is because he doesn't like crafts. That's all.
It's great, because it's always been in the rules of the con that the crafts are allowed.

Sorry for the rant, guys. I just had to go to some people that would... you know. Understand. =/

**Hands over large dirt-covered cinderblock**

That's so unfair.....the artist alley is for people that CREATE stuff to sell..obviously....why does he have to be so damn technical....I assume he's just making prints then right??
Complaining and segregating artists like that just makes more people reluctant to sell anything...
He's not making ANYTHING. He's just the guy running the con, and probably doesn't have artistic talent.

-Story of raging stupidity-

This is so unbelievably stupid. What qualifier is he using for art? "It must be 2-dimensional"? When comparing, mentally, a print and a hand-crafted charm, two things come to mind: 1) Prints are usually more ornate. 2) Charms have more practical use. Perhaps something is only art if it's useless? (Not stating this in a bad way, mind you. But with a print, you can put it on your wall... or maybe in a book of prints to flip through. Charms can be attached to key chains and cell phones, used as pendants or zipper pulls... there's just more stuff you can do with them.)

At the very least, they should rename it to "Illustrator's Alley" rather than "Artist's Alley".
uhm ..
can i see any examples of your work ?
Examples of who's work?

Anyway, yeah. neutral
I hope I'm not the only one who ends up replying to him about that. mad I mean. I already got into the huge debate with him. I WILL especially question the $100.
But I think it doesn't help I haven't done many AA's. In fact, this con is the only one I've done. (last year)

Chibi faery: Oh wow. I'd probably boycott that con, print artist or not.

Vicemage
I've forgotten where you ordered them from now... ^^

Say, Seijaku, did you get a confirmation that they received your application for Ohayocon? I haven't received one, and they've been ducking answering the question on their forum, so I'm really, REALLY nervous.
Got them from Zazzle. :]

Nope, haven't received confirmation yet. x_x
Seijaku: IN FACT, that's exactly what we're doing next year. (unfortunately, we all have our tables already)
Seijaku: Eesh... last year I got confirmation almost right off, this year, not only is there no confirmation, but they're ducking the question on the forums... >.< (Have you seen how many questions before and after the one about confirmation was asked have been answered by the AA representatives?) It really makes me feel ungood...

Faery: That's just stupid. (Actually, that reminds me a lot of the organizer of a soon-to-be-defunct con I attended a couple of times, who had some very stupid ideas about the Artist Alley and how to use it to wring money from the artists...) I would suggest that all of you guys who already have tables publicize at your tables in some way or another what he's doing. A boycott won't do much because they'll just find someone else to fill the tables, but an active "protest" of sorts at the con itself hilighting the problem will be embarassing and is more likely to both get others on your side, and warn away those who might take your place if you don't register next year. "Crafts" items tend to be popular in Alleys; showing the attendees that the con's organizer wants to do his best to make sure they can't buy them there will hurt him far more than just not showing up next year.
Ahh, but how would we do that.

AND, as you can see in the post now, I'm trying to get other artists to point that out in his post, to bring it to the attention of the congoers hanging around the thread.
And also, it ISN'T a big artist alley usually, and the people planning on boycotting next year are the main ones: those of us who attend every year, including his main artist. One who does his banners, maps, flyers, ALL his designs.

And yep. Crafts sell much better then prints.
I suggest selling pictures of the crafts, and explaining exactly what the Con Head is doing when people ask if they can buy the crafts themselves. razz

Well, the DID say they were moving, so I'm hoping this is the reason...but why can't they delegate sending out a 'hey, we got your app, we'll tell you if you got the table after we review' to someone else?
