The best technique is cross-hatching smile it's smooth, crisp, and professional. Blending with fingers is bad because the oils in the skin absorb into the paper, making it difficult to erase the marks and reducing the archival stability of the piece.
Totally, I don't find smearing attractive. It's good to practice shading without using any kind of smearing too (I guess for PCs, you can get away from it XD). It helps your hand control o.o, well, for me. Lotsa of ppl can draw on photoshop but cannot draw on a physical piece of paper.
I usually go from light to dark and add on slowly rather than concentrate right away on core shadows and strong highlights. And I look at references when needed so you wont end up with something that looks fake and flat
