The best technique is cross-hatching smile it's smooth, crisp, and professional. Blending with fingers is bad because the oils in the skin absorb into the paper, making it difficult to erase the marks and reducing the archival stability of the piece.

I love cross hatching.

Being faithful to your country doesn't always mean being faithful to the people running it.
anyone perfect must be lying anything easy has its cost anyone plain can be lovely anyone loved can be lost
ok well i didnt know that i only use it because its always there when i have nothing else

I've always been taught never to smudge while using a graphite medium. It's a personal preference and I find that crosshatching or smoothly shading with your pencil will create a crisper image. You'll also be less likely to have cruddy finger prints in the background or graphite smudges in areas that you don't intend to mark.

Also, it's important to have a kneaded eraser at hand. It's a great tool for lightening your values little by little and to prevent wearing down your paper from excessive erasing.

I always consider the effect of light on my subject.... it makes the art more realistic.

Well, when drawing anime, I draw the eyes first and then the hair to frame the face lines. that way I can get a good angle! I use liightly drawn circles and ovals for the body. Darken the lines when finished!

I mainly use a mechanical pencil, but I find that an HB2 pencil tends to smudge less. sweatdrop
