Has one of the things very common in your art been listed? (Not that it's important for you to care...)

Fanart annoys me. Some, I'll admit, is nice and some I enjoy looking at but that's hardly the point. It's that every goddamned piece of fanart gets a gazillion of faves on DA, a bunch of mindless squee comments, without anyone even bothering to look at the skill and talent put behind the piece, let alone comment on it. And the fact that some silly little doodle of say, Sora and Riku from KH will get ten times as many comments as a glorious picture featuring an original character also gets under my skin.

That's very true, I should try doing some fan art sometime. ^^ If you try looking at it in the possitive side. Do a very nice fan art and lure them into looking at your other work.
Ironic Oxymoron
Cartoonists and how cartoons are considered art. Just my opinion, though. I know they take their work seriously and I may have just angered any cartoonist reading this, but....

I seriously do not like how it's considered art.

Is there any particular reason why it's NOT art? Why shouldn't I take my work seriously? I'm not angry, but I'd love to know why I am apparently wasting my time. (;

I don't like the new trend that is to draw characters from cartoons I've grown up with (Like Ed, Edd, and Eddy and Foster's Home and and whatnot) and give them GIANT BOOBIES and make them all sexual.

Are you trying to traumatize me? Because it's certainly working.
I have nothing wrong on art with homosexuals on the piece but...

I'm really sick of seeing Roxas and Axel in the top deviations of Deviantart.com. gonk
Don't care, art is art. Some are good in eyes of some and bad in others. I don't hate any persay. Any art is ok with me.

Murmaider
the art trend in anime WHERE THEY MAKE THE GUYS LOOK LIKE CHICKS!

They narrow down their jaw bones to pointy tips and make them have HUGE EYES with big eylashes and make their necks all sick and skinny just as their bodies.

Thats just so annoying. NO WONDER EVERYONE THINKS THEIR GAY!

Dear, have you heard of shonen ai? Some people actually enjoy these styles however I haven't actually seen many shonen ai styles that I dislike with the exception of " our kingdom" it's not the styles fault if you just have bad taste when choosing them... You know. ^^;

No, shounen-ai is a genre, not a style. There is no law that says the male characters in a shounen-ai story need to look like girls with peens, but there is also no law that says the male characters have to look manly, for that matter. Nevertheless, Murmaider is right in saying that style is a trend, and I agree with him/her that it's an annoying one. If I wanted to look at things that seem female, I'd go for shoujo-ai/yuri.

I admitt I'm wrong ^^ but the styles in the genre are all very similiar. ^^ That all depends on your preference. What if Shoujo ai and yuri all the sudden became manly would you still preffer it? smile

Well pairrings do get old lol , so I don't blame you. If people like them however there isn't really much you can do about it XD

I am a sasuXnaru fan 4ever even if I don't draw fan art lol
I like cartoons and anime even if simply for the fact that they can tell a story or display an amuzing series of events. I can agree with most people here though. Seeing all of the routine fanart gets REALLY old unless they use the character for something funny. For instance, someone made a short comic about Fai and Kurogane that made made alot of the shippers look really dumb.

I've seen stuff get onto the popular strand on DA that looked as if it were done by someone in the third grade. Honestly. And it wasn't even very funny. I don't like that anyone who can doodle up chicks who are impossibly thin with impossibly large eye among other things can call themselves 'artists'. They don't ever look into or really get any inspiration, and they never feel their work. If that makes any sense.

Unfortunately, with every good thing there is a bad thing to counter it. By doing fanart you'll reel in a broad audience, for sure, but only one type of audience that is interested in fanart only. Once you start throwing your original works at them, they'll most likely lose interest after a while.

They are, and I really wish someone would break that trend. It's perfectly all right to work with your own style - why can't some artists see that?

But in any case, I prefer YAOI, not yuri or shoujo-ai, because as I said, I like to look at men rather than women. But if I was into shoujo-ai, I'd be just as pissed about them suddenly developing broad shoulders and flat chests, because that's basically stripping them of what they are, same goes for the male characters.
Is it just me, or has anyone noticed that a lot of people are commenting on the personality of the artist rather then the style?
Not liking someone's art because THEY are cocky, well, doesn't make sense, in my opinion....

Anyway, a lot of people are bashing anime, or specific anime styles. Yet those same people probably call anything with large eyes 'anime.' Not just on gaia, but everywhere.... you can't win. D:

(Oh, and on the fanart popularity comment... that's not necassarily true. Some people draw fanart for things that are really unpopular, which can work in reverse.)

Heh, it's ironic, because I LOVE androgenous characters. I find it very beautiful and appealing, and am drawn to it. Same with detailing, etc. It's interesting how one person can hate one thing and antoher love it, ne?

My own irks are the false anime styles and copied stuff, myself. I don't define 'false anime style' by 'anything with big eyes not from Japan,' but rather, the people who are trying way too hard to be anime because its popular.
Don't worry about fitting into a specific genre. Draw from life, develop your own style. Go ahead and be inspired by other styles, even adopt parts of things that are aesthetically appealing to you.
But doing something because it's 'popular' annoys me.

Oh! And this isn't exactly a fad, but people giving others bad art advise. (Telling people how to draw anime wrong, advising to copy or trace another person's artwork without anything involving actually UNDERSTANDING what they're copying, telling people to do things that every art proffessor will tell you not to, etc.)

Actually, I think I can sum up a lot of people's dislikes-

1. Artwork they feel is more popular then it should be undeservingly (eg. fanart for a pairing that has a huge fanbase)
2. Poorly drawn artwork
3. Unoriginal artwork

(Oh, and lets not turn this into a 'is anime/cartooning/whatever art?' thread. If you don't think it is, take a few art history classes. It has been discussed to hell and back here.)
It really is just a matter of taste, and I'd be lying if I said all of my male characters looked absolutely manly (they most certainly do not, as you can see in my sig), but it still bugs the Hell outta me when I see a dude sporting birth-giving hips.
I don't like Weeaboo anime art. Plain and simple. It's ugly, it hurts my eyes, and yet... it's EVERYWHERE.

A great (or terrible) example is that OEM Peach Fuzz, about the girl and her pet ferret. The art is terrible. It's got the obvious, "weeaboo artist trying to draw OMGZ KAWAIIII JAPANZZANIME ARTZ I WIN LOLOLLll" feel to it. It's kind of gross. And there are plenty of American/non-Asian artists out there who can draw styles that don't really exude a sense of poserness. Or maybe I'm just being an elitist f**. :'D

Aside from that... I don't really like the textureless, watery/gradiented sort of coloring style a lot of people like due to mangas like Fruits Basket and such. The result is a bunch of terrible artists who seriously and mercilessly rape the blur tool on Photoshop/OC/Oekaki, etc.

ARgh... Just remembered. I'm irritated by all the animal/furry drawings done in that Disney style. I can't remember the last time I didn't see a cartoon tiger or jaguar that wasn't lanky with huge paws or didn't have those large, almond-shaped eyes. It could just be deviantart, though. It's just sad/irritating that every freakin furries artist has the exact same style. D<
I want men to look like men in shounen-ai, but that is far too much to ask for. crying

I think I should blame the pretty-boys for people mistaking a lot of my female characters to be guys and the characters that are supposed to look genderless as guys, too. And just because you give a guy long hair doesn't automatically make them bishounen (take a look at Metalocolypse (sp?) for examples).

I'm trying to make a genderless character and everyone automatically thought "male", most likely because of the wide mouth and big nose. Not all women have delicate features, you know! scream

Wth are you on about? All women are supposed to be absolutely delicate and sport huge breasts even if they murder for a living and carry around big guns.

</sarcasm>

Edit: Can I see this genderless character of yours?

Anime. Nuff said.

I agree, and I realize that this place is all about it, but I think anime is way over played. When you have got young kids, who start drawing anime, call themselves "artists", and don't know a thing about the fundamentals of art? I think there's something wrong there.

I have always been very picky when it comes to the manga I read. If I don't like how it looks, I won't read it. (The only manga I have bothered to buy is Kaori Yuki's.)

I also have noticed on Gaia and even dA that some people think that anything non-anime/non-comic is realism, which is wrong. You can't just throw everything else into one big category. I mean, someone who paints a portrait in an impressionist style is doing impressionist art, not realism.

As for shock art, every once in a while there comes someone who actually has the experience and the balls to back up what they do. You just have to pick out the good from the out-of-line.

AMEN!! i so agree with you!!

I like both traditional and cartooning, I don't think it's your job to define what an artist is neither is it your place. It's up to the people to decide that if they can do it well enough and have as much as pottential than why would you try putting them down. Assuming that your saying this to put down anime artist. You know if like you say gaia revolves around anime, then why are you here? I think people who draw anime are usually capable of doing more than that ^^; and I am one of them. Anime strangely enough was an introduction for me in learning how to draw real people. I don't think I would have had the courage to try still lifes or anything like perspectives or even have the time to think about values if it wasn't for anime/manga. I guess I am thankful for it cause it was a start :p

I'm did not say that to put down anime artists. Just that it is not my cup of tea.

And no matter what style you do, you should still be properly trained and/or have the vocabulary. Especially if you critique the work of others. Just because you know everything there is to know about anime art, doesn't make you an "artist", just an "anime artist".

I like some anime, and have my share of favorite cartoons. (Foster's Home being one of them and I'm 19 years old.) I just think a lot of it is overdone.

As for being on Gaia, I've been here for about 2 1/2 years (this is my second account) because a friend of mine invited me and I like to RP. Granted, as I've gotten older, I veer away from this place most of the time, but I still like to join in discussions like this.
I keep hearing about Foster's home for imaginary friends. I have to see this now.

It still kind of creeps me out that the kid's head is a perfect square, though.
