Welcome to Gaia! ::

[********, my sister is trying to go to art school, but my parents are stingy bastards and will not help her unless the school she goes to is relatively cheap (less than 17k a year).

She wanted to originally go to my school, but the tuition jumped 30%. does anyone have any state schools that have good arts/animation programs? I've been trying to do some research, but it's so ******** hard to figure out what schools are s**t.

Halp?
FIT is a poor man's school LOL

It's a SUNY

:O

Pros: Good teachers
Cons: Sucky students, I think they give priority to NY state kids because not a lot of kids are good. Than again they are freshmen...

This is a very helpful thread. I'm definitely subscribing to this.

Seeing as there are a lot of graduates on this thread, I have a question related to art schools. I heard from a friend, who went through art school, that most people who take AP Art Studio in high school, even if they get a 4-5 and place out of the introductory art class(es), often have to take go back and take those introductory art classes. Have any of you found this to be true?

Yes.

Many art schools don't want your foundations in art to be based on high school classes. Art101 was the most important class I ever took in college. None of my credits for AP courses were able to transfer because the school wants their art students to be on the same page.

All right, that makes a lot of sense. Plus, it's always good for extra practice. Thank you for the help! c:

I talked to the guy head art guy at the U of U (not that it's a particularly great art school eek ) and he said much of the same. They want you to learn it their way, but it really depended on the portfolio nothing much to do with a 4 or 5.

Loved the thread by-the-way. Thank you!

Meh, I also went to a SUNY and the head of the art department was an "artiste modern", some polish lady with her nose in the air. That's not to say there didn't seem to be some good instructors in the art department, but it was headed by a turtleneck-wearer.

What others in the thread already said. However! What's actually useful (if you go to an art college) end up being your English/history/soft science AP/IB test scores, since the art colleges that require liberal arts credits will usually accept some of those. Saves you some money.

I have a more general question. I was out of curiosity looking at info given and when I saw prices I think my heart stopped. So can I ask how do you afford collage without a scholarship?

I knew USA collages were more expensive, but not this much. Here in Croatia, a year costs you between 1400$ and 2400$ per academic year. But it might be balanced out with low acceptance (for art schools, 10 students per year in visual arts on uni I am attending, a lil bit more for uni in Zagreb, but their capacity is a tiny bit bigger) and graduation rate and portfolio that is almost next to perfect.

Whatever my scholarships don't cover I just get loans for from the bank. I'll be paying it back + interest for a long time after I graduate, but I think it's well worth it for the education. I'm actually not even taking out all that much compared to most of my friends from HS who decided to go to Unis, actually...

You are absolute right, education is priceless and will pay off in long term, but thank you for clarification.
But since you are here, can I ask another thing? How often do parents put collage money aside for their children?

Well, that's something different for every parent. XD My parents aren't giving me any money for college, so I'm paying it all by myself. But, I did go to private elementary and High School, so they did pay for that. So yeah... Just depends on the situation I guess?

I am wondering the same thing! I live in Canada, and the tuition prices per semester here are insanely high. I was hoping to go to art school right out of high school (which was two years ago), but I didn't want to be paying loans off for the rest of my life, so I've been putting it off.

How does everyone cover living expenses, supplies, textbooks, etc, on top of tuition costs? Just thinking about it makes me sweat.

Here at Emily Carr I'm paying about $1800-$2000can. per semester. That's if you're a Canadian student. My international friends pay a lot more. I'm fortunate enough to be able to live with my parents until I graduate which makes things easy. I know a lot of my friends live off student loans in addition to part time jobs. Some are taking an extra year to finish so they can work more.

My boyfriend's mom works for University of Washington and says their art program is decent. I've been playing with the idea of getting into their printmaking program after I move back to Seattle, but I'm still not sure. I still haven't gotten in contact with the school at all, and don't know anything about it besides cost (about $9k a year, I believe), and whatever else my boyfriend's mom has told me, which isn't much. Like you said, it's really hard finding info about which schools suck and which don't, and UW is such a humongous school that trying to find art and design students/alumni/class reviews among everything else takes forever and a day.

'Course, she might have just been saying their art department was good just to get me to stay in Seattle instead of moving back to Minneapolis. I dunno. lol. After I dropped out of Cornish I was kind of flailing around trying to find a new school and the only thing I could do was move back home and go to MCAD.

You go to Emily Carr? ... Mind if I ask you a billion questions? I was looking at applying there eventually, but I feel so unprepared. Also, I think I misread something somewhere - I was under the impression that tuition was in the twenty-thousands per semester, not the thousands. I was like O_____O

I've been fantasizing about going to an art school in the UK, but it's so much more expensive to study internationally.

Well if I remember correctly, international do pay something like $1000 per course.

And yes, you may ask away. I am most versed in the animation department, though I know a bit about the others as well. I also have a friend who's spending a year at Capilano's animation program who we all grilled asking what that program is like last time she swung by our lab.

edit: Oh, and student exchange programs! We had two people go to Scotland last year, and we've gotten a few UKers visiting here as well.
